I just got my Tilt. First I am going to hard reset and remove the AT&T bloatware. Then I am going to Install the HTC Home page. Next I am going to reasign the PTT button. Next, I am enable the 'H' icon and GPS photo. What else should I do/install? Any ideas are appreciated.
what about settings?
If you do this, will you lose all your AT&T settings (e.g., wap, etc)?
I have read that you do not lose the setting for wap, proxy, etc. I saw that you just lose the add programs. Has anyone done it? Did you have to add setting manually?
Yeah I did it. After the hard reset and the reset when it said it was going to apply the AT&T changes, I had to do this to get it to make calls, connect to the internet, and send text messages:
Nothing
All the settings are already there for connecting to wap.cingular etc right out of the gate, and none of that extra trial software garbage.
So let me see if I will be doing this right.
Hard reset the phone
when the phone says '..customizations will begin in 3 seconds...'
I press the reset button.
After it resets I should let it apply the AT&T changes.
Is that correct?
this is what i did. after i reset w/o the att bloatware.
Skip all that nonsense and just unlock and change over to the HTC ROM. IF I can do it ANYONE can do it. You'll be SOOO happy you did. The HTC ROM listed on the website I've found is faster (especially with camera function), less (read: none) bloatware, and prettier. Keyboard and PTT button fixes are included.
Then install agile, opera, TomTom... done.

what website? i installed hardspl and tried running the kaisercustomruu but no luck gets com error. any help on flashing this phone to htc would be appreciated.
Just load the HTC Rom, it is good. About the network it will automatically update to AT&T. THe only applications you might lost is Cingular application like XM radio, Cingular vidoe.... You can always install via CABS you find @VP3G.
That is what I did. HTC runs pretty smooth... It is faster than the 8525 original. So far so good with 2 days on usage..BBC, GPS, Wifi, pursh mail, SMS..etc. no problem.
If you load the HTC Rom, will you lose your warranty with AT&T?
What's the difference between the "H" and "3G"? And if they are different how do you enable the "H" icon.
Yeah you will. And IMHO everything you'll get from the HTC ROM you can load onto the stock AT&T one using cabs. There's so much memory on this sucker I'm not even really worried about bloatware right now.
Yeah I'm looking forward to a good cooked ROM, but I think I'll wait awhile (probably near the end of my warranty period) before I do that. Especially since experimenting with this stuff right now is almost like beta testing ... The first HARD-SPL for this has just been released and personally I'd much rather wait until it is tried and tested before I do anything risky. AND since this sucker is so new, my guess would be that it'd be highly unlikely that you could revert back to factory settings to get warranty service if you do flash another ROM at this particular point in time ...
-Uninstall everything that came with it.
-Redo the Program icons
-KaiserTweak and adjust settings (no SMS confirm)
-TomTom (grab from a torrent site)
-AGPS registry change
-Skype
-Browsers

--Picsel
--Opera Mini (create direct shortcut with Resco)
-TCPMP and FlashVideoBundle for Youtube access
-Chartcross GPS Test for GPS warmup
-HTC Kaiser Dialer + 3G-Batt Icons (vp3g's 3.5/3.6 addons)
-PocketNester + ROMs (haven't gotten 100% but I'm new)
But then again I've only had it 3 days and 2 nights

3G icon indicates UMTS coverage. H indicicates HSDPA (and i assume HSUPA) when launched.
wow, HSUPA would be sweet, too bad unless you live in like chicago or newyork good luck getting it

Wow you have been productive! Can you please expand on this process with detail. Do you have youtube working in IE or Opera? I have not yet got youtube videos working on my AT&T branded device. I dug around quite a bit for flash for Opera 8.65 but never found something to actually download. Thanks.

Go to the sticky in the main part of this thread, the one titled "Essential cabs for kaiser" or something like that.
Download the HTC Streaming media player. You can get m.youtube.com to work through IE without any issue. The HTC media player associates the rtsp:// to itself and it will stream videos.

Yes but that's the mobile youtube site. I'm talking about the full youtube. IMHO the mobile site sucks because I can't see my favorites from the computer. You need TCPMP, .72 is preferred. And Skunkworks FlashVideoBundle is a plugin for FLV files. Basically you install TCPMP, then the plugin. Then under TCPMP settings you associate it with "Flash Video". I would also change the buffering settings to like 800kb, and 8% when underrun.
Completely optional, you can tell it to play automatically full screen, and exit TCPMP when done. So you just click a Youtube link, and it plays, and you're back at the site. Sweet, huh?
CABs attached.
EDIT: PIE is the only browser I can get this to work with, none of the other browsers I've tried will launch with the correct app.

Thanks so much for the details. I installed both cabs and it works but only on a small % of videos. The error message I get on many when trying to play is, "Video not available (may have been removed)." This is really getting frustrating.

I've noticed that, but only on videos that require birthdate confirmation. Stop trying to watch porn
There may be a solution in one of the threads for this. Not sure.
I subscribe to Walll Street Journal online, and I want to click on WSJ links emailed to me throughout the day. Unfortunately, when I click on a link -> sent to PIE, it loads up WSJ's "mobile" version of the article (e.g. the URL gets altered once it detects I am on a handheld device). This is unacceptable because it leaves off graphics, charts etc.
On my i730 I used PIE Plus to alter the "User Agent" to IE 6.0, and this worked perfectly. I tried PIE Plus on my Tilt but the mobile version still loads! (I also tried IE 5.5 with same results). In each case I restart PIE to ensure the new settings load. I have also tried soft resets each time.
I tried Opera and in fact its "Identify as -> Desktop Computer" does work, but the display is so awful (it takes up an enormous amount of screens with ads and fillers and even a huge amount of blank space <!>), that I can't hardly find the actual content when "Fit to screen" is chosen. (In "Desktop" view I would have to do too much scrolling horizontally, no matter what zoom is chosen).
I must be missing something, and would welcome suggestions on this problem. I posted this on pdaphonehome.com, and it was suggested that I try here. I look forward to hearing ideas on this issue.
Browser recommendation?
Well, if nobody has any suggestions on how to get the User Agent to work with PIE Plus, any browser suggestions that would work for my needs described above? As I mentioned, Opera does not work well for me at all for display reasons that I listed.
I've seen mention of Thunderhawk, but it is a subscription model (yuck), and I don't believe it has been specifically updated to WM6.
Are there others that should get a try?
Any suggestions most welcome! Thanks in advance.
I've been searching forever for this same answer. Good luck. I have tried almost every browser to "trick" on particular website and it is always a NO GO

If Opera can do this, there must be some way that another browser can do this as well.
Or, I'm not sure why Opera seems so popular yet has such a horrible display for many pages for me.

Which PIEPlus version are you using? Get the latest as WM6 uses a different User-Agent than previous OS versions. It should work.
This is a general question about people's experience with Internet speeds on the device.
I have used several different ROMs, both stock and cooked and fine that Internet browsing is very slow.
I usually am getting either 3G or H coverage with 3-4 bars. If I open up the forum site for instance, it could be a good 2 minutes before the browser is responsive enough for me to type anything in. It's almost like the device is so busy rendering the page that it can't even download.
I don't think this is a speed issue, because when I tether my laptop I generally get pretty good speeds, and that same page will come down on my laptop in 15 seconds.
I know that PIE isn't the best browser, but is it really PIE that is causing such slow browsing? I honestly haven't tried opera yet as it seems to always be in a beta and I have read posts about many issues with that browser as well.
Do other's have such a slow time browsing? It's almost embarrasing when I have to pull my device out to look for something quick and it takes 5-10 minutes to get some info of the web.
Again, I don't think this is radio or ROM specific, since I have more or less the same experience on all... I am wondering if there is something up with the connections in my area, although I find this hard to believe as I don't live out in the boonies.
thx.

I guess it's time I give it a try. There are apparently some new versions floating around from the Diamond? Do these work or should I stick with an older one?
If you could recommend which version I should try for a better experience I would appreciate it. I'll then comment on the differences in speed.
thx

I'm trying the newer one. I like the 8.5 version better ( I think that was the one). It was more user friendly.
However, whenever I attempt to open this forum on my device it takes about 3-5 minutes just to get into the Kaiser section.
I typically only use my internet browser for information that can be found in any daily newspaper, which only takes a minute or two during each session to find.

I think there might be some type of script on the (forum) page that slows it down. Once or twice after about 2-3 minutes of waitintg PIE popped something up that said a script was taking longer than expected.
What is so bad is that it locks the whole browser not letting you click "stop" and just browse what has already bee downloaded (which is usually enough). When it does stop, it usually takes you back to last page to start all over again .
I guess I shouldn't be so surpried to think that PIE is crud.... although not all pages are horrible...google and google news and wikipedia aren't too horribly slow.
Bengalih Gsleon3 posted the opera 781 diamond build. In there you will find the 1004 build in pages 3 or 4. I recommend you use opera too, either one will do good, im currently browsing and posting this comment from opera 9.5.

i am typing this now on 9.5 on a slower Edge connection and it is much faster.
however it does seem a little hard to navigate especially without the stylus.
am i corect in assuming you can't interact (click) on the scren when it is zoomed out? that you must first zoom in?
also i miss the URL dropdown like on PIE are there aditional shotcuts so you don't need to go back into the settings menu each time?
thx

I think it must depend on the size of the picture you've been sent - as mine have always been full screen. Bear in mind that the Diamond has a VGA (640x480) screen and most phones send MMS pics at a lesser resolution.
The way to view full screen is to open the MMS pic, click 'Contents' which will then let you see text01.txt and Image001.jpg (or similar) which are the parts of the message. If you hold your finger / stylus on Image001.jpg then you get an option to Save. If you save the file then it gets saved in My Pictures and is viewable in the TouchFlo Photos and Videos... which means you can zoom in using the scrollwheel.
Your operator can also cut down the size to save traffic. It's done on the mmsc server, I believe.
I am also experiencing this problem, The Pics are only coming in at 4k, and when saved as suggested by p3eps It won't let me zoom in. Pics are about the size of a finger nail on the screen which just isn't good enough!
I am going to phone o2 to see if they are restricting something but I am on a unlimited data package so I don't see why they would.
If anyone else has any thoughts would appreciat it!

I've experienced the same problem with my original Orange ROM.
Since I've flashed my Diamond with the original HTC ROM I am able again to receive MMS picture in their original size and not in thumbnail mode !!!
But I've experienced this problem with other HTC models. I think it's a problem with the ROM install. A hard reset could fix the problem. Perhaps.
O2 in the UK do this, if the network doesn't recognise your phone it automatically downsizes the picture. I had this problem with my htc s710. I had to edit some registry setting to make the o2 network think my phone was an xda and it worked.
I cant find the post i found it in, but in sure if was under the networking folder on this forum.

I'm planning on purchasing a new phone, likely the AT&T tilt.
My family is currently an AT&T customer. They will be adding a new line for me.
Is the best place to purchase a phone through AT&T's site?
Do you recommend refurbs?
Also, I hear that if I do not have a data plan, I could rack up extreme charges.
I want to use Wi-Fi and not 3G Internet to save money. I also want to disable 3G to save battery life.
Upon searching, I see that "Dutty's Diamond V1 Build 19588" may be able to do what I want. I'm also searching for similar builds. If I get a Tilt, is Dutty's the preferred ROM build, and does it offer what I'm looking for (protection from data charges)?
I also want a nice Touch 3D interface (with the option of enabling or disabling it to save memory/CPU).
As far as my experience goes: I've modified various devices from my gaming systems to my iPod Video. I'm just new to cell phones. I'm here learn and hopefully one day contribute.
PS. Current owners: I've read stories. How is the video quality, really? Will this phone be able to replace my iPod Video 5G 30GB for video playback? Also, will I be required to pay $10/mo for AT&T Navigator, or will GPS work fine without the package?
Sorry for the lengthy post. I'll continue my reading and researching. (been clicking links from the sticky)
I personally delete the network settings to prevent any data charges, or you can look into download Modaco Nodata. Touchflo comes with the Tilt and if you want the cube, there are many versions on here so you'll have to find which you like best. I don't mind the video quality. It's not the best but certainly not the worst; works fine most of the time. It might not replace the iPod in video playback to many people's standards, but it would for me. No you wont be requried to pay for the Navigator, you can get Tomtom or iGO that have pre-downloaded maps.
Ok, so eliminate the "Extreme" data charges you will need to install this:
Modaco NoData - this enable you to toggle the ability to use or not use data connections. (very very useful for roaming and etc.).
Then,
I think only one rom has NoData already cooked in but you can always just download it from the above link and put it into any rom you wish.
For any GPS you will need to pay.
3D Touch interface with the ablility to enable/Disable it - nothing spectacular? Sorry.
All the roms include a Communication Manager in which you can turn off 3G data connections (along with wifi, Internet Sharing, Active Sync, Bluetooth etc.)
Dutty's roms are no longer supported - he has moved his development to the Diamond.
This will not replace your iPod Vid. unless you can find a 30Gb Micro SDHS card - even then, i think the iPod battery is tailored more towards video so it may last longer than the tilt if you plan to watch videos on it.

You have several answers already - here is my take on it -
1. I purchased my Tilt through AT&T and have not regretted it - you might get it cheaper somewhere else - but if they are selling it there is a reason - right?
2. you can turn off the data capability (as several have already said.)
3. there are many things that you can do with Kaiser Tweak to turn off 3G and other things to preserve battery life - but you will not get (realistically more than one day's worth of battery no matter WHAT you do (since most people have to go in DAY increments and I have NEVER gotten TWO out of it.
4. Dutty's ROMs are no longer supported - look at my signature for one that I think is pretty great - but lots of others will work for you as well.
5. GPS - this is FREE totally - no cost - if you want TeleNAV it will cost per month and that is useless because I need it when my cell does not work and it requires cell to work - the GPS works free with live search and I have TOMTOM which is free monthly but you have to purchase maps.
6. I watch videos on it all the time - works fine - not 1080p but adequate.
Just my opinion.
Bill
You can also use "Kaiser Tweaks" to prevent your Tilt from connecting to the internet. You can always deactivate 3G. To use telenav you need to have a data connection. So the best option would be something like Garmin or Tom Tom or something similar.
Thanks. From what I understand, I have to go ROM hunting. I saw somewhere on the forums a person's signature noting use of Dutty's Diamond on their Tilt. It may have been a typing error. From a geek's perspective, that's great. From a paying consumer's perspective, I'd rather not risk a brick.
As far as video goes, I'm not interested in storage space. 4GB MicroSDHC is fine. It is the video quality I'm mainly interested in.
I'm a TomTom fan, I should investigate this. I'm glad I don't have to pay monthly. Also, I know there are alternate solutions, some with free downloadable maps. In either case, my GPS question has been answered.
As I read, one question popped up in response to the data blocking. Does Kaiser Tweaks require a new ROM, or will it work on a stock Tilt? Also, what about Modaco NoData? I cannot view the page because it requires registration. I'd prefer not to pay for software to block data when the purpose of blocking data is to save money.
Thanks for the speedy responses.
PS. I still haven't heard much about Refurbs. Should I worry, or if I can find a refurb much cheaper, is that the best option?

Just as an aside, let's not sell Mr, Duttythroy down the river just yet. Even though he has moved on, he has left behind some great roms that work great and are supported by many threads.
In response to zeezee and the video quality: In that case, I'll have fun with my encoders. I'll read the forum and do some of my own testing. I usually set up a good profile for various videos on different devices.
About Dutty's ROMs. They do seem a bit dated, but looking at his package set and some features, it's no wonder a lot of newer ROMs are popping up based on his. If anything, I feel I should try a recent one that is Dutty based. Although, If I decide to cook my own later on, I'll probably start with OEM as a base.
I've been reading more, and it definitely helps. I have a comparison of the 2008-06 and 2008-07 ROMs going on. I may put my results on my site. Thanks to all the chefs for the good ROMs.
For those using cooked ROMS: I see a lot of Touch Diamond ROMs out now. I know some work on the Tilt, with or without keyboard fix. Is that what I really want though as a Tilt user? Are there more Tilt-catered ROMs? Looking at it, I see Jacks V2 Full, WM6.1 ROM _ Ryncppr Version V6, L26_KaiserDiamond_V9, and HyperDragon III.
For audio listeners: Did any Tilt user find an adapter to use normal headphones? Did you decide to get bluetooth stereo headphones (expensive and use battery)? What are my choices? I'd assume since it's WM 6.1 I can play just about any video or audio out there with the use of other media players and creativity on my own part (yay for encoding).
PS. Happy 4th of July to those who celebrate it!

I'm curious how NoData works compared to other methods.
Is it a software block? Does it disable portions of the hardware? How does it allow the IM while preventing other applications including Internet from being used? I'm under the assumption that IM is simply another app which communicates the same as the browser.
A link to a good thread, tutorial, or info page would be nice. The previous one linked asked me to login. It may have been a simple copy/paste error.

The page is a forum and the software is on a thread.
I'm searching around for threads. Are there any "what ROM do you use" polls for Tilt users? Are those discouraged here? I'm trying to get an idea of popular and successful ones.
gps for free
To add a detail: I use google maps on the tilt. You need to download and run "gpst test", which you launch just before starting google maps... apparently, so I read here, google maps can't initialize the gps, it has to already be running...gps test does that for you. Then, launch g-maps, and on the bottom right, pull up menu, and check "use gps". Unfortunately, you need to do this everytime.
The use of gmaps is intuitive. It is NOT nearly as good for finding directions, and driving along, as ANY other gps I have used... it lack simple features linke "track up", for example, always being north up. BUT, it is free...you don't need to load the maps on the phone, it pulls them from the web, along with satellite and traffic data, if you wish. I find it is also more accurate than some other gps databases I have in terms of showing where a certain business is located.
I think yahooo may have a similar product, but I have not tested it.

I'm searching around for threads. Are there any "what ROM do you use" polls for Tilt users? Are those discouraged here? I'm trying to get an idea of popular and successful ones.

Personally i love ROMeOSv2.3, very very stable and run light.
Here is a link if you need it: http://www.mindsofwisemen.com/fileso/other/ROMeOSv2.362808MMs.zip
I'll look into the ROMeOS version.
How does it perform in the "eye candy" department?
Thanks for the google maps info. I want something slightly better, so I may go towards paid software.
