I am having another annoyance with my Tilt. The camera is damn slow. First the on-screen rate is stop-motion like, then the auto focus button takes 2-3 seconds to focus, and finally the photo takes a few seconds more to capture. B that time, the photo opportunity is gone, or I just have a blurry picture.
The 8525 was much faster...
Any ideas? Thanks!
I'm sure it's the new autofocus function that is responsible for the speed. It's not something you find in many cell phone cameras, and gives much better photos for many situations. But yes, the slow speed is a shame.

Honestly, after spending a few hours tinkering with this phone, the 8125 --> 8525 was a much larger, more needed upgrade. The 8525 did have some caveats, which I was hoping they would fix, but they seemed to just get worse. For example, screen rotation is simply slower on WM6 than it was on WM5. I want a PDA that has Windows capabilities, but without the hiccups that Mobile exhibits. I was hoping the 8925 would be the solution, but I guess I will have to wait another year for a true converged device. Such a shame that a very well made device has to be crippled by a poor operating system. Not saying it's horrific, but definitely could be a lot better.
i've notice the blurry thing...but once you get use to holding it steady the pics come out amazing.
One thing I have found that helps is to use the Camera button to take pictures - You can press the Camera button half way down and let it focus, then press it the rest of the way down to actually take the picture when you want to snap. Doesn't help the whole 'catch it right then' situation, but it does help some...
Thats one of the bugbears with this new phone is the time it takes to snap a pic I know its more a phone than a digital camera but why put a 3mpix camera in there if its not meant to at least equal old digital cameras (casio, olympus, fuji etc etc). I like the extra features of it but not at the expense of it taking 5-6 seconds for people or things to stand perfectly still in order to get that pic

I have found that the greater the amount of light the quicker it takes pictures.

My 2 megapixel SE K750i from YEARS ago (I had it two years ago as an import phone) had no issues with it's autofocus lens. It also took much better photos.
The camera app is pitifully slow. I've tried shooting a lower res or lower quality and that doesn't change the on-screen display, and yeah the autofocus is crazy slow. I guess we should look to HTC for advice, as it's their camera app.
Yah it's a bummer that it's not that fast, but the phone really is a powerhouse of applications. If this thing was running WM2003 on this processor it would be blindingly fast, but with any power loss, the data would be gone. So far speed is the price we pay to have a device that you can pull the battery out of and not lose any data... When I use my HP hx4700 VGA PPC running 2003, it still blows me away how fast they used to be before this new "persistant storage" feature. I don't know if this would help the camera specifically, but I wonder.
Well, it's damn annoying. I would rather the speed and flashlight than an autofocus lens or 3MP.

Agree completely, I had high hopes, the 3MP autofocus sure looked good on paper, but now I just miss the flashlight
i heard that it's because of the software, i think paul from modacco said that cameraware is much better (and i THINK he said that it was faster to take pictures).
Can anyone test this out?

As mentioned in another post. If you turn off the "shutter sound" it seems to respond faster. I've tested and it seems to work form me.
I have also noticed that when I push the OFF button and then turn it back on the camera is much much better.

I've tried all of the previously suggested options and the pics are still blurry.
I have a Nokia 6300 2MP camera phone and it's pics are sharper and better with no blurriness whatsoever.
Even the old Wizard I have is better
This isn't an issue of me having an unsteady hand either, I've been an amateur photographer for many years and have no probs using my old ancient SLRs or new DSLRs, even when snapping with a camera in each hand.

The lens protector on the battery cover may be scratched or worn (mine is). I get much clearer photos when I take the battery cover off. Other posts describe using certain polishes to restore a clear lens protector.
That's what I get for keeping the phone in my pocket.
I remember reading a post about the fps when taking video. I use the fix when taking regular pictures too, because it appears to speed up the viewfinder as well.
fix:
1. Cover the top half of the phone (where the lens is) with your hand, to decrease the light available.
2. Press the power button to put your device into sleep mode, or whatever it is that they call it.
3. Without moving your hand, press the power button again to wake up the device. This appears to cause the camera software to reinitialize with decreased light settings.
Yeah, it sucks, and yeah, I miss my Tytn camera and led light. Hope this helps!
I noticed that in environments where the light source is low, the tytn 2 always tries to make pictures that are very bright and vivid. That's why the camera is really a pain in the ass to use when there's not much light. The screen moves really slowly and the focus is also really slow. This way it's almost impossible to make pictures that are sharp. When i shoot pictures outside, it focuses really fast and the pictures are sharp.
Personally, i can live with pictures that are less vidid and bright. Isn't there a way to set the shutterspeed at like 1/50 for all times? Because now it seems it automatically adjusts the shutterspeed to somewhere near 1/10 in those less light environments.
The camera app in the Kaiser is a piece of sh*t. Not only does it switch to night mode automatically without allowing any manual control over this, but the settings now list two options that are no longer adjustable:
- Prefix: for photo file names; in the Hermes you could set this to use date and time as the file name.
- Capture Format: there's only one choice: JPEG. This was the same in the Hermes while the Prophet's camera gave one more choice: BMP.
I am NOT looking forward to the next ROM update from HTC. It will probably take away something more from the camera that is useful!
Shutter speed is result of 3 issues:
-Ambient light (available light)
-Aperture
-ISO
You can manually make the shutter speed faster in a DSLR (camera with detacheable lens) but will probably result in an underexposed image.
So to make the shutter speed faster on the TyTN II you would have to either raise the ISO or widen the aperture. Both are not possible! The best you can do is increase exposure to +2 or use a flash.
The focus is slow because:
- the scene is dark! Hard for little crosshair to focus.
Try this tip, when focusing try to focus on a contrasty area of the screen! Avoid areas that are bland, one color, monotonous. For example focus on where the door pane ends and the wall begins!

On a DSLR you can usually change shutter speed, aperture size and ISO speed independently (in full manual mode). On a Canon DSLR and probably on most other vendors' DLSRs also, you also have "program" modes, where you can change one or two parameters and have the camera adjust the third parameter automatically.
The problem with Kaiser's camera is that it does not allow manual selection of Night mode. It switches to this automatically. At my home my TyTN II switches to night mode when I am taking photos in my living room at noon time on a cloud-free sunny day! I really miss my old JASJAM :-(
Edit: My comment in my previous post about the Prefix setting is actually explained in the instruction book, on page 205 in the English TyTN II manual. If you save your photos to a storage card then it follows a standard naming convention which I've seen is common with most digicams.
On page 204 there is a lovely explanation to the Capture Format setting:
Capture Format. Select the desired file format.
But they do not expand more on this to explain all the choices available.

Indeed. I'm sure there are people here that are able to find out where this setting is beging saved.
Unfortuantely, it's much more than just software. Though a software update would be nice. It's also about the speed of the CMOS image sensor, in which HTC chose to be super cheap. And, to some extent the speed of the image processing chip in the phone. On camera setups like that's on the Kaiser and all other cell phones, plus on most web cams, etc etc, there is no setting for apature or ISO. It's all mimiced in software. And the software is only able to do what it does with the information CMOS is able to send it, and how fast.
Bottom line is, the camera in the Kaiser is not good. Period. Only way to truely get better is to wait for a new phone with better hardware.
To those camera buff types: Nobody expects DSLR quality out of a cell phone. But we do, and should expect a phone to be able to snap a picture in a normal room under decent tungsten lighting without the worry of blurry or dark pictures. Those two problems are never a result of the optics or size of the CMOS, but rather the speed of the CMOS and the quality/speed of the processing chip for the CMOS. If you put the CMOS in the Kaiser inside a Canon D30, you'd still get blurry and bad pictures.
I know the camera isn't that great, but the pictures it makes in darker environments are always very bright. So there has to be something that makes the camera adjusts its shutter speed to the amount of light there is. I guess this 'thing' can be found and can be changed, right?

But we DO expect 3 megapixel quality out of a cell phone that states it has a 3 megapixel camera.
The Kaiser is capable of taking good pictures. I've seen numerous threads about the Kaiser's camera on many sites, including this one, and in nearly all of those threads there were people who were able to get great pictures. In one of the threads, someone had mentioned that they reviewed a pre-production Kaiser, and they said there was a huge difference between that camera and the production camera. I'll see if I can find that post...

ok this is a dumb question on my part but i've never done the video call before, and reading another thread led me to realize -
the at&t tilt doesn't have a front facing camera.
ok - so how does one actually look at the lcd while trying to let the other party "look" at you?

Well I'm pretty sure you wouldn't use the 3mp camera on the back anyways becuase of the high resolution that would be streaming to the other party.
I'm fairly sure that once you begin a Video Call (on the front camera) you can then switch to the back camera - which operates at VGA level rather than it's full 3MP. The only problem is that the phones without the front camera tend to be on a network that doesn't support Video Calling across it's airwaves, so it'll never work on them anyway.

I've tried all the settings and resolution. I find 640 X 480 to be the clearest. Still pictures are clear. Anything moving in the picture is a blurry mess. Is there a registry hack that improves clearity?

this is coming from a photographer. Blurry objects are caused by moving objects in a low light environment. When trying to capture light in a room with poor lightning the camera shutter will stay open longer to capture enough lights for the exposure. This can be corrected by bumping up the ISO or apenture. Since this cannot be done by the camera on the Fuze you can always turn Flash on to compensate for the low light or resting your elbows on a desk for more steady position

I'm coming from devices like the Sanyo M1 (2MP Auto Focus, the best camera phone ever on Sprint), Mogul (2MP decent pictures) and Treo 800 (2MP, really nice pics). All I'm asking is for the blurry pics to be better. I took 20 pics yesterday and 18 of them were blurry. I've tried every resolution setting. Like I mentioned earlier it seems L 640 X 480 pictures seem to be better than the higher settings.
Buy SonyEricsson and you get a camera that can be actually used for something...
Mine takes pretty good pictures, do you hold the capture button to allow the auto focus to do its work and then take teh picture without having much movement. The movement is what i found causes the blurriness. I guess it autofocuses on a spot and then when you move it start refocusing but the picture takes anyway?
BTW my sports and burst mode arent working properly, camera freezes up and have to soft reset. Is the 3mp tweak for these modes to much for the CPU to process
Yes, I hold and press which autofocus then snaps. I understand it something in the picture is moving but every pic? That's not normal. I've been taking pictures with phones for years and never ran into an issue like this. Plus this is suppose to be a really advanced 3.2MP camera. Might have taken a step backwards with this one.
One thing I do is turn the brightness down as far as the camera will let me, this really isn't a brightness control but a shutter speed control, lowering the brightness raises the shutter speed, which allows for faster camera response.
I think the problem is probably mostly that the sensor used in our module has an imaging area of 3.61mm*2.72mm, 4.52mm diagonal.. take a look at the chart here for imaging sensor sizes: http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Camera_System/sensor_sizes_01.htm
Notice how the size of our sensor is below the bottom of the chart.. It's often said that a camera with superior MPixel count will lose to a camera with an inferior MPixel count and a superior sensor.. well, our sensor isn't big enough to be able to take really nice 3.2mpix photos.. without ideal conditions. Then there's that whole thing about using a CMOS sensor rather than a CCD sensor..
One thing I think the camera can do better is that it doesn't seem to be operating in progressive-scan mode.. there's noticable tearing all over the place..

You can remove the back cover of your phone and take a picture... it does make it better.

I think that is somewhat incorrect. For TYNT II and older phones, yes that would work, since it has a plastic cover over the camera. But for the touch pro and the diamond, it should make little to no difference. I've tried it, and I don't see much of a difference, since it's just a hole. Not covered with plastic or anything.
I had the blurry photos problem too. I just tried it and I haven't played with it enough to confirm this fixes the problem (it seems like it reduces the problem but doesn't eliminate it) but try this:
HKLM/Software/HTC/Camera/Captparam/
and set
CaptureTimer = 0 (old=5000)
tell me if you see a difference
Two more things to do - go into the camera advanced settings (in the camera itself) and turn off the click sounds and set the review time to no limit. With those two and the change above I think I have a working camera here...
have you done the "white balance" tweak in your settings? it completely gets rid of that yellow look when you take pics indoors. Also theres rumors saying that turning off the shutter sound increases the camera's quality but I cant prove that

I think what most people are looking for with regards to photos is not 100% 9mp quality from our phones. I mean, why can't a fix similar to the Tilt's be made?* All I want is a higher FPS in low light conditions.
*Where you can increase FPS (in low light) by running the camera, turning the phone off, covering the lens, then turning the phone back on...

I tried those tweaks with no success. Pics aren't as blurry but they are pretty crappy. I'm not saying I want 10MP clearity. I just want this camera to be compariable to the devices I previously owned (Sanyo M1 and Treo 800). Right now it's not. I'm going to exchange this device.
Errrr Sorry I stated the wrong registry key. Actually that one does not matter too much. UPDATED version:
1. Change registry key:
- HKLM\software\htc\camera\captparam\Capkeydelaytime = 10
2. Soft reset to activate the hack.
3. Set the capture key of the camera to hold & press.
To make a photo:
- Aim at subject.
- Hold your finger on the round big enter key and wait until the white "[" "]" go green. This might need a slight "touch".
- Shoot by pressing the round big enter key fully.
The problem you're going to run into is the size of the sensor on cell phones in general. You could have a 10mp cameraphone but if they keep the sensor the same size it is now the pix will continue to be crappy.
I will say that the pictures I've taken with my Fuze have been pretty good, and I have really bad shakes in my hands. The autofocus is a huge step forward imo.

As many of you, I too have autofocus issue. In the first moment after staring the camera app everything is fine and then the autofocus kicks in and puts everything out of focus. Close captures work out well but infinity is always blurry ..
So... lots of users share the opinion that the optical parts (the multiple lenses) are not moving accordingly and can never achieve focus due to a hardware problem. Therefore the camera unit needs to be replaced which is nearly impossible if you don't have a warranty. (If you do have warranty you get a brand new phone lol)
BUT... everything is in focus in the first half a second after starting the app right? So I thought switching off the autofocus will help and I think it does! I am running latest Venom ROM 4.4.3 with Sense. The latest sense camera doesnt have AF switch but I found this nifty app called "A Better Camera" and it does offer AF lock. So - after starting the app, first thing press the AF round button on the left and choose AF lock. In this was the phone never gets to try to focus and the focal lenght stays on infinity (I assume...) which gives you much more detail.
