Hi all,
I am seriously considering getting one of these after they showed up in a shop here last week. I spent about ten minutes playing with it and was mightily impressed with the TF3D interace and the accelerometer ball game had me grinning like a schoolboy (haptic feedback kicks butt). One thing I noticed is that the main UI seemd to run pretty slow. It took about a second before the screen would slide to a new page when using gestures, is that normal? I suspect that it is probably a problem with the crummy ROM they had (the Chinese ROM's they put on HTC phones here are worthless, the Hermes was unuseable out of the box, which is is what lead me to find the gold-mine of geniuses here on XDA).
Anyway, to make a long post short, does anyone have any issues wtih speed on thier diamond? Anyone using anything other than a stock ROM at the moment? Thanks!
After having played with TF3D a bit (didn't care much for it), I personally use a "Clean" ROM from Panosha or bElite (plain WM61, without TF3D) and it runs very fast and has 70MB free with SBP Mobile Shell.
My diamond doesn't seem any faster than my old artemis. I've disabled touchflo 3D and it's still just as sluggish as any other slower CPU phone.

Have You changed your ROM, or is it the stock ROM?
currently using a cooked rom from the Dutty and Tom Project team diamond V2. With the TF3D in that is very fast, but that is due to the loss of some animation. such as side to side sweeping,
but that is something which i can live with.

I am still with Hermes, but couple of weeks ago went with a friend to get for him Diamond (from ZGC )
This gave me the opportunity to play with original (English) Rom and Chinese one too. Diamond experience ~4+ hours
(1) I felt the same :
(2/3) No, it is not a problem of the "crummy ROM". Diamond performs very slow compared to my Hermes (customized ROM + modifications). My friend runs origianl ROM and is very jealeous about the responsivness and speed of old TyTN
(3) Yes, after I got the TyTN that was the reason to find XDA-Devs too
- My feeling is the interface on Diamond is tooo heavy, which causes raely slow performance. For me personally this device makes sense after getting some clean rom on it. Well, in case getting the device more on "cool factor" side, I think it is coool - but for working device I still preffer what I have now
(perosnaly prefer to wait for Raphael and X1, and then will make my mind about changing device)
As stated, Dutty's ROM shows significant improvements to the performance/speed/stability/touch-sensitivity of the Diamond. I had quite a few complaints myself, about the poor performance of the Diamond as it was OOTB - but I knew that there most likely would be when I bought the phone.. however, i ALSO knew that there were chefs and cooks in these forums who always impress us with their mad-ass skills in creating the best ROMs in terms of performance 'n prettiness. All hail the Diamond chefs and cooks! You've seriously gotten me falling in love with my Diamond even more.

I am also using the Panosha Clean ROM and Mobile Shell 2.1 and the phone absolutely flies, it leaves my Cruise for dead. For me this is the fastest Wm6 phone I have ever owned and I have owned a heap of them.
THanks to everyone for all the responses, it's interesting that the TF3D seems to cause performance issues for a lot of people. That also dissapoints me a but as I was thinking of holding out for the touch-pro, but by checking pdadb.net I see that they will have the same processor so can probably expect similar performance issues....is that correct?
Also, I wasn't knocking all Chinese ROM's, there are some awesome ones out there and I have used several for my hermes, I was knocking the crummy ones the guy at my local shop seems to dig up.
Anyway I guess the thing to do is wait for the deelopers here to come up with a fast ROM for these devices that doesn't sacrifice TF3D. I am sure they will figure it out and I wil absolutely DONATE, as should everyone who keeps a ROM on thier phone for more than a few days. THe fact is that our devices would suck without the work of people in the community and we should give something back to those who put down hard-earned money to be the first to buy these phones and then spend the time to make them work for the rest of us. Just my 2 cents....
Hi guys,
im an orange customer and I'm for a an upgrade next Thursday. I was hoping to get a Touch Pro, but they dont seem to be bringing that out just yet on Orange so my alternative is the diamond.
I have heard lots of horror stories on it being very laggy and un-responsive due the the lower hardware specs. this with the un-ability to use any MMC Cards was one of the reasons i was routing for the pro.
They have now released a new rom and this has improved things a lot i hear but of-course there is not upgrade for the orange rom other than using a cooked one i assume as the HTC official will not work.
my question... If I go for the Diamond, am I downgrading to much... should I just be patient and wait ? would you say its a worthwhile phone ?
Thanks for you replies in advance, and this is an opinion thread, no flaming someone for their opinion necessary. my spelling well thats another matter ....
While the TouchPro is definitely more powerful than Diamond, I have bought Diamond recently and don't have any performance or usability issues so far. I am using the ROM that came from Telstra and am quite happy with it but I suppose over time, I would still go to try out some cooked ROMs as I have been addicted to flashing with my Hermes for the last 2 years.
To be short: If you don't need a qwerty keyboard and if you don't need more than 4GB storage, buy the Diamond. Nothing else comes close.
All the negative things you've heard about like slowness and such can be solved by installing a custom ROM like SwiftBL 6.0. My Diamond is not only fast, it almost flies.
The screen is the best on the market, the interface is great, GPS is excellent etc. etc. etc.
The Diamond is the PDA better than I ever try to date ...
I abandoned my P3600 move to this concentration of technology and style and I have not yet repented ...
The battery does not last much, but on the site HTC sell at a price not excessive plus the battery.
I had heard about the slowness in response and fluidity of TF3D, but even without resorting to custom ROM, just act with a registry editor on the registry, change some value and that's it ... now is my finger that is not behind the TF3D.
If I may advise, order!
I'm sorry to ruin, but the device is slow.
Before the diamond I had an i-mate jam running windows mobile 2003SE, which should be slower than the diamond, it has
an 400MHz Xscale cpu but the OS / phone way more responsive.
In the diamond it takes me few clicks to answer a phone call, also few seconds to disconnect one also the random freezes.. oh the freezes.. jezz
this driving me crazy when I hit the START button and it takes ~2 seconds to understand..
(And yes, I use dutty's cooked rom V1.7 1.93 which is considered the fastest)
There are good things of course, like the screen which is perfect, the built in GPS which works flawlessly and the TF3D interface
which I hope some time will work faster..
Meanwhile, I still hope I would be able to install Android when it comes out.
Btw, the screen might be perfect but I've also had an iphone, and its a different touch
experience, the multi touch points on the screen and no pen needed to work around are great.
One more annoying thing is the mini-usb.. very pointless, why not to use the regular standard usb port :\
Overall, I'm not too happy mainly due to the performance issues.
WM6.1 is too heavy for this phone, imo.
I had the same issues, but with 1.37 ROM. I was quite disappointed until I upgraded to 1.93 ROM. Those just can't compare, everything is silky smooth and runs really really fast. Now I'm soo glad i bought the phone, it works flawlessly-TF3D and WM6.1...of course thanks to this brilliant forum!
Bottom line: With minor tweaks and some patience you will be more than satisfied with the device. I was sold to the design, now I am to the WM too...
Even if I remove the TF3D interface its still less responsive than needed so I dont know what are you talking
about and I'm also running 1.93 dutty's ROM v1.7.
The whole thing feels like VISTA vs XP in performance terms..
It depend if you are luky or not, my father has a diamond too and had problems with 1.37 and now with the 1.93 he has a lot more problems. For me that was realy good with the Rom 1.37 and now impossible to use GPS updates with the 1.93; two phones and two diffrent experience. Impossible to use Skype in phone to phone over IP but great with PC to phone. Now there is a lot of tweaks realy usefull and this phone is great with a long battery life (if you use what you need when you need). I hope that will help you.
@Delusionz
I really feel sorry to hear that, mate. I am now on the official WWE 1.93 and it's just another world compared to the previous. Everything seems the way i like, which is also great thing with WM, cause lots of things are customizable(+all those performance tweaks which are great). For instance, if i click Start button, it opens down immediately...no lags whatsoever. On 1.37 it was only question of time...Did you try any other ROMs too?
@dge
I had this quick gps problem too...but on 1.37...now it's all fine...i guess we mean the same thing...but long battery life is not its plus...with some tweaking 2 days...maybe 2 and 1/2 days...of course with medium to low usage...

Some of the alleged "slowness" is inherent to all Windows Mobile devices. 4 years ago, WM phones took 2 seconds to open startmenu-programs. Now, after all this improvement, they still take 2 seconds to open startmenu-programs. This is not Diamond's fault, but rather Microsoft's.
Where Diamond shines is in comparison to other WM phones on the market, not iPhone. If you want extreme speed, buy iPhone. If you want business features with extreme speed and don't need touchscreen, buy BlackBerry Bold. If you want Windows Mobile, but the Diamond. Simple as that...
thanks everyone for there opinions and advice if. Its one of the reasons i like this forum as "most" people are friendly and happy to give advice.
Im not an Iphone man, this will be my 4th HTC and 5th WM device so i understand all to well the slowness of WM and if the mutterings i heard were just concerning that and not the device hardware then i think im sold.
I think i will miss-out the SD Card Slot and TV-Out of the Pro but hey its free! I cant argue to much.
Thanks Again,

IMO best phone out there by far, and it does not stop there since the phone is new, everyday brings new tweaks and apps that make it even better.
According to Endgadget Mobile, Microsoft has the following hardware specs for Windows Mobile 6.5:
Microsoft's issued a clarification regarding upgrades from 6.1 to 6.5: devices that are already out in the marketplace with a minimum of 128MB of RAM and a 400MHz processor or better are theoretically capable of being upgraded

That means that the Hima will be officially supported.

Doesn't mean it'll be officially supported by an official ROM however (i would be very surprised if it received an upgrade). Slow devices can run WM6.5 too like the Wizard.
Of course not. But it will mean that the hardware itself is capable of running the OS at an acceptable speed. (Which the betas available now does not... )

I am not sure, but I think, I do remember having heard something about five running WM6.5 ROM, in at least three or four different languages.
As I am an old man (compared with guys like ather90), so it might be age stubbornness to keep my old 6.1Ger ROM, but I do remember, that on my second device 6.5Ger was running fine, fast and stable, as I turned it on the last time. Sorry, for my dementia is bad, but I do not remember if it was yesterday or two seconds ago.
No joke, I thought the released WM6.5 are no beta, indeed they are first class, although I don´t really need them. Some features are nice, OK, but not as important enough to switch system.

I rate you 0/100.
I suspect he hasn't joined his ExtROM with his storage area, thereby giving him almost 30mb in total.
Maybe he can check out the link when he gets the chance.
You did not mention what version ROM you installed. I have sundream's ROM and I can honestly say that it rocks. No problem whatsover that you mentioned. Scrolling is very fast and most bugs in WM5.x and WM6.1 were fixed.
I give it a 5/5 two thumbs waaaay up!

Congratulations to all those heroes, who made the Hima more than up to date.
Although I will keep my self made 6.1 ROM, I think, you all are better than the Microsoft guys. They even don't release it with the Honeycomb design you all use!
Windows Mobile will be called Windows Phone OS:

Hi
I have tried many different roms and are currently at dutty 2.6.
How far has wm6.5 rom come?
I wish to start a thread where we discuss what is best of 6.1 or 6.5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500523
you guys rock
The way you take no prisoners with people who might not have time to trawl through a couple of thousand posts before asking a genuine question. You guys really are as hard as nails... no scratch that, maybe youre inadequate teenagers struggling to find a meaning to life beyond a slightly disappointing smartphone?
Hi there,
Don't judge everyone by some people's attitude on here...
It is a tough question though, but it would be good to hear peoples views on whether they prefer wm 6.1 or wm 6.5 - and why
I'm just changing from Miri's 6.5 v 5.2 rom back to Dutty's 6.1 v2.6 EXTREME, purely for the simple fact that I love the customisation that Dutty has done to Manilla and the integration to facebook/contacts seems better on Dutty's rom than Miri's.
Don't get me wrong, both roms are constantly being developed and both roms have their advantages, but for me, Dutty's 6.1 v2.6 hits it (and 2.7 will be better!!!)
I'm sure there are more features to 6.5 and it is supposed to be better screen operations for finger rather than pen, but the only thing I really noticed is the new start menu, which is good, but not very customisable.
Been round 2-3 times with these 2 roms, but think I always end up going back to Dutty's.
Give them both a try though as it is each persons perspective on what they prefer from their HD.
I am not being hard and I don't mind helping, just look at some of my posts, but the problem is every couple of days someone asks: Is this rom better for me? Is X rom faster than Y rom? Can you recommend a rom for me?
Just do a search in this rom forum to see how many have been asking the same thing OVER and OVER, or better yet just look at the last few pages!!
The thing is we are all here for the same reason, we all want the fastest, greatest etc, but it is all subjective. The rom that is perfect for me is maybe not even close to good for you....
As for being a teenager, lol, I wish
tru and i feel all of u but the question is which rom do u prefer .... i havnt tried 6.5 but i would like to read reviews on the differences....and no opinons on wat u like for urself who cares wat u want this post is basic info on the differences between 6.1 and 6.5.
its funny cause u sr and jr members are here to help us newbies out and u dont... i had to teach myself how to mode my hd and how to change the roms now im teaching myself on how to mod and create my own rom.... i do wana thank u guys for creating these roms but u guys are here to help not talk slick but please everyone google ur questions first before just postin anywhere... but i feel this is a descent thread
i havent tried 6.5 and im not going to
when 6.5 is released properly then the good version will be properly put on the hd
until then its 6.1
My goodness, lets everyone just start a new thread for no other reason than laziness to read and experiment, dont encourage this kind topics as it sets a bad example!
seams to me that "IT" guys have a chip on there shoulder, all we are looking for is a bit help. We are not all computer experts. We all want the same thing though. The best and fastest rom. It does not matter what is good for me is not good for you. We are simply asking a question. And you are the guys to answer the questions. Yes you could do a search and get about 10,000 answers. Do you have time to go thru all them for the one you are looking for. COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Once again this is heading down the path of another useless thread as everyone is talking off topic again.
This is why MOD's delete threads like this as they just go round in circles with people complaining etc etc etc.
If you want this thread to remain open, start talking about the topic again, otherwise thread will close very soon. I'm actually surprised its still open.
Anyway, ON TOPIC, all 6.5 is a facelift to 6.1 with no real great improvement.
Thats my 2 cents!!
So true am new to all of this, I've been trying to put the 6.5 rom on htc hd and finding help is not easy.

I don't understand why everyone decline the question. In my understanding the question just ask about the advantages of the 6.5 in comparison to 6.1 ROMs here.
May be this question question the high-number-must-better attidude of many of us but for me this question is adequate and reasonable. No reason to harm somebody.

Maybe this helps: ll you need to know about Windows Mobile 6.5
Relating to this article:
1. Windows Mobile becomes Windows Phone
Surely no reason for our choice.
2. All new menus
6.1: Manula, manila menus, new start menu etc. from HTC
6.5: honeycomb today screen, new menus etc.
Both solutions are more finger friendly -> Its you choice.
3. Flick gestures
Like HTC with manila and some other options on 6.1, microsoft try the same with 6.5. -> Its you choice.
4. Better browser
Most 6.1 ROMs here use Opera and 6.5 the new internet explorer. -> Its you choice.
7. Better looking lock screen
There are many 3th party applications which allow this also on 6.1 ROMs. -> Its you choice.
8. Improved e-mail and messaging
I didn't check this with current 6.5 ROMs but it seems to be, that HTC (on old 6.1 ROMs) made the same.
So, after all this points, for me there is no big advantage between the new 6.5 ROM and the old 6.1 ROMs with HTC applications like manila.
It's only your choice, if you prefer manila or honeycombs, the solutions from HTC or Microsoft.

For me it was the lock screen in WM6.5 that sold it to me. I used to use S2U2 but found it a little bit buggy and would sometimes crap-out when using flipit/gyrator etc etc. The default WM6.1 lock does a job but it's exactly pretty looking.
But the WM 6.5 lock? 'Tis glorious! I'm loving being able to jump straight to different notifications and it just looks so good as well.
Other aspects of WM6.5
I was using Dutty's v2.6 (and had been using Dutty's ROMs since the first Xtreme Test came out) and couldn't recommend it highly enough; it really is a fantastic ROM. I am missing a lot of the nice little features the the Rhodium Manila brings in.
I'm currently using Miri's v6.1 Premium (and thinking about upgrading to the new v7.0) with TF3D running on top of it. I ran with the Titanium interface for a bit but Manila if definitely better for me and the way I use my phone.
But part of me thinks I might just go back to Dutty's v2.6. As I mentioned above, there a just so many lovely little features in the Rhodium ROMs cooked by Dutty that I'm missing. No sleight on Miri's work you understand; there are many bugs reported when trying to integrate Rhodium with WM6.5 so I think the final advice has to be that if you want all the niceness of the Rhodium ROMs (and believe me, they are nice!) you need to run WM6.1 underneath.
I guess we'll just have to wait for the Diamond2/Touch Pro2 to get their WM6.5 upgrades in the Summer to see how Manila3 works alongside WM6.5.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear! Magic!
I used Duttys 2.4 ROM earlier, loved it.
I installed Davideucks wm6.5 rom yesterday, I love the speed of the Titanium menu, feels really smooth, so does the start-menu and mail inbox.
But like dom_mitchell1 i miss some small stuff from manila/duttys ROM.
Things I dont like about WM 6.5 is that I dont think we cant customzie the main Titanium menue, yet? For instance I would like it to launch Opera instead of IE.
I liked the new Manila calendar better.
Today screen only shows one appointment. I dont know why they dont use all that empty space they left in the lock-screen, its perfect for showing multiple appointments.
Moving icons the way you want them in the new sart-menu is a hassle.
Hearing that Dutty is moving to 6.5 is really great.
I bet he will bring great stuff to it.
OFFTOPIC: IMO, the biggest factor for chosing either wm6.1 or wm6.5 is personal choice, based on several factors: functionality, looks, speed, customization, compatibility. Thats why it is really difficult to chose the perfect ROM for everybody. This debate between newer members asking this sort of questions and older members becoming sick and tired of answering them is old and it will last forever, I guess. No matter how many times you say to a new member: go read wiki, etc, there will ALWAYS be smb. new coming and asking the same question tomorrow. I, personally, prefer to help instead of suggesting: go read, but sometimes I am way too lazy to present a proper answer, hence I just ignore the question. I believe this should be the solution to this, but everybody treats it differently.
ONTOPIC: I have tried 20+ ROMs for HD, most of them wm6.1, but now i'm on Davide wm6.5 rom and i dont wanna go back. why?
at the beginning its the looks. I guess i just grew tired of the dark, black HTC customization. Also, manila was not suitable for me, i didnt use 70% of the features, i guess: didnt use favourite people tab (its easier to dial directly from phone app.), didnt use financial info tab (not interested), didnt use internet tab (i can easily just open Opera from programs) etc.
Wm6.5 is finally moving at an acceptable speed, the Start menu looks great (although it lacks customization mostly), and from the home screen i can listen to music, see photos, see the wheather (by using titanium weather 2.2) and I can use some HD-quality pictures as background. Also, email, sms lists look neater, more classy. the softkey menus are bigger, more finger-friendly. These are reasons enough for me to use wm6.5 and not come back to 6.1. Not to mention being a smart-ass among my friends with HTC HD and stock ROM.
So if you go rather towards new, imperfect technically-wise ROMs, I advice you to go to 6.5. It is fully utilisable. I actually used the previous Davide ROM for a week!!, which is quite a lot of time in my recent days. If you prefer much functionality and perfect, 100% reliable device, go for wm6.1 roms..

Anyway, ON TOPIC, all 6.5 is a facelift to 6.1 with no real great improvement.
Thats my 2 cents!!

Yes, like 6.1 was a facelift to 6.0, and 6.0 to 5.0. So what? The latest beta versions of 6.5 are clearly faster than 6.1 and you do not need TF anymore, which by itself slows down WM.
fair question. my advice is to sprite backup ur data. try out each new 6.5 rom cook then, if u don't like it, go back to ur previous rom & do #1 spritr restore.
personally, I found early 6.5 roms really slow & unresponsive so I too abandoned the concept for extreme 2.6.
I have decided to wait til it's officially released. I don't think it's anywhere near ready. oh, and it didn't recognize my sdd card.
the big improvements for me were the big X in top right corner (close button) and the opera like IE browser.
edit: whoa...these results are quite interesting. the majority (some chefs included) thinks that 6.1 is better and smoother than 6.5 despite the missing features. maybe some rom cookers should release more 6.1 roms as everyone seems to be doing 6.5 these days
-----------------------------------------------------------
while wm6.5 has many worthwhile additions over 6.1, i have noticed that the average 6.1 cooked roms (for example touchX, itje touch-it 10, pctech4u, old jacks roms....etc) tend to work better for me than their 6.5
they just tend to perform better, use noticeably less memory, and video and graphics performance always seems smoother
what do you all think?
6.1 used to be "better". approx 2 months ago it started changing.
Agent 47 changed that first, now other are following.
All answers will have a bias though.

IMHO 6.5 can be quite good, but maybe Im too old or something as I can not live with new start menu from 6.5 ... it's ugly like hell and definitly harder to use. I wonder is there a way to have normal old start menu with 6.5 ?
I was usin "Touch X 10.1 X TREME" ROM, for the last 2 month, but when I updated to "Touch X INFINITY 2.0B" with wm 6.5, it was very buggy, unstable, high mem usage, lots of errors whtout any specefiec reason.
I can say wm 6.1 is a really much better OS than 6.5.
Does anyone know if the 6.5 has come out officially ?

INFINITY 2.0B (B=BETA, going to trashcan, 3.0 is soon), yes that version is VERY buggy, but try valks or any1 elses, and its good, not really as smooth as 6.1 i think...
totaly agree. i have tested so many 6,5 roms in the x1 and i always end up going back to 6.1 (pctech4u or touchX in my case). you have to be blind not to notice the difference
6.1 roms are smoother than 6.5 even on the touch diamond2
guess MS needs to tweak 6.5 before they finalize it

right from the horse's mouth
I've tried many ROMs and off course there might be a couple of bugs in wm6.5, because it's not released yet, but it's so much more touchfriendly.
So far the most outstanding wm6.5 ROMs to me are gtrab's r3.61 BB ROM and the latest Energy ROM, both perform very very good. They are both really smooth, especially looking back on the wm6.1 ROMs...
After testing Firestorm... NOWAY! 6.5 is better !!
For me wm 6.1
I like very much to "play" with wm 6.5 and valkirie Xperio is very nice but for day to day use I keep going back to Jack 3.x.
Absolutely no problem for me with that while with wm 6.5 I keep finding problems.
yeah, wm6.5 seem likes to hang a lot..

You take the words from my mouth! I feel exactly the same, I would even go further and say the start menu in Wm 6.5 is a joke, I am amazed how a company with so much GUI experience could create it. But some people seem to like it..
Firestorm 6.5 ROM's for me are the best atm
I'm loving 6.5.
I just like to be testing the newest things.
There will be bugs, but they have lessened considerably.
Valkyrie ROM's have been great. I went from 2.4 and ran them all until 2.9.
Currently I'm on itje's Touch-it LEO III.
I just flash, tweak, re-flash....just like everyone here
6.1 roms will be more stable no doubt until 6.5 reaches final status.

WC
Once you start using the latest crop of 6.5 [yes FireStorm 2.9 comes to mind] you cannot go back. The UI changes are fluid, kinetic and functional.
Honestly, I'll take a somewhat buggy 6.5, over a 'polished' 6.1 any day now
I am using The energy rom, and no way am i going back to 6.1. Simple reason, scrolling is lot more simple now, without having to use the stylus.
If you really rely on your phone for everyday business use, 6.1 is still better. Some of the newer 6.5 roms are very nice and work well, but they are much more unpredictable than a really solid 6.1 rom that's been tried and tested. Playing around on 6.5 is nice, but most of the 6.5 roms are too garish and colorful in my opinion, and they are just not as stable. People will try to argue, but if you had to pick a rom to get you through a crucial business day, I think most people would pick a 6.1 rom. Not just for stability, but also for battery life.
Energy and firestorm are both realy realy good 6.5 Roms.
the 230xx builds in general (beside 24,25 and propably 28) are both realy fast, stable and energy saving. previous 6.5 builds used to suck all somehow.
so currently i tend to say that 6.5 ROMs have reached thier usability stages. 6.1 is kinda out ^^

some don't really care if the phone works, if the messages are sent correctly, if the phone rings on call, if the tone sounds on alert, if the alarm buzzes on time. some don't need a working phone and don't mind living with a partially working device.
but let's face it, not everyone are 22. well not anymore.
