Am I the only one here complaining of the very bad video quality taken with the Kaiser (TyTN II) apparently caused by the low frame rate ? I don't think so, because I've heard few other people complaining of the same thing....
I just want you guys to either raise your voice or suggest a solution... I used to take much better videos using older HTC models, and the Kaiser supposed to be doing better than those older models, not worse....
Check out the following YouTube clip to compare the Kaiser to Nokia N95..... What a shame
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz9lqEATEA0
Yes, its utterly useless. The 8525 was better. Why?
wow striking comparison. there's got to be a way to up the FPS via the registry...
I tried changing both the fps and bitrate in the registry but see no improvement.
I believe it will require software or driver update through HTC... I hope they are aware of it.... guys we have to email HTC so they will be aware of it (if they are not already)
Yup, this is a hard/software problem; no known player works at a decent speed.
I wonder if you can disable the autofocus of the camera and make the video quality better?
The front facing camera does not have auto focus and it shoots much better video.
Bummer. This was a major selling point to me and I have yet to get decent quality.
I haven't done much encoding, so I thought it was my bad on the encode side.
So even with TCPMP/Core Player and optimal encode settings, it's still bad? People have been saying sling player works well, is it because they stream at a low frame rate?
EDIT: Doing a bit more research, seems some people have gotten decent performance...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298126 (but on Wizard)
Here is some hope for it being just an encoding/settings issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336063&highlight=video (Page 2)
from another forum
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/htc-...5/93396-video-performance-recomendations.html
But this seems to suggest there is some firmware work to be done before any "real" improvement can take place.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=339173&highlight=video
And here, the recommendation is the .7x TCPMP (should be the right one under the Kaiser CABS sticky)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336433&highlight=video
Seems there is quite a bit of competing info on this. Can anyone confirm settings that work? If so, please post details of player/settings/encoding rates/codec/ etc. Maybe there is a sweet spot that will make do until a firmware update can be had (if this is even a possible fix).
This thread is pertaining to video -capture- quality, not playback.
Yes, good catch. Playback also seems to be disappointing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=339173&highlight=video
I wonder if there is any relation.
I cant get the frame rate on my TyTN 2 much above 9 FPS with my Slingbox. Are are and how are people getting these 25 plus frames per second????.
Matt.
Someone please change this thread title to "Low Video Capture Quality" please. lol
hello gurus..
just wanted to know if hero rom also upgrades the video quality of g1
i mean frame rate and size of video e.g 640 x 480 ..and some one told me it records in mp4 format which is better i think than 3gp.
let me know.. thanks.. i ve been asked to post my question in this forum , by the senior members .
thanks in advance.
regards,
naufil
Video quality is going to be the same, but of course its going to look alot better when you record in a good lighting conditions. And it is still recorded in 3gp.
i had mp4 file on my sd card for video when on highest quality sorry been away topic starter
I just checked for you. The "large" resolution is 352x288 and there are two encoding types available to you. The H.263 and the Mpeg4. Hope that helps
Since the N1's resolution is pretty much full DVD res, are there any tricks out there besides watching a non-full screen movie to minimize the filesizes? I'm using handbrake and even with 50% quality movies come out at about 1GB a piece...
Using H.264. Any tricks?
Thanks.
-Mike
You need to reduce the bits per second. I've used handbrake, but I usually use SlySoft's DVDmobile. I get excellent results with file sizes between 500-700MB.
Just get Format Factory and use the default settings for HTC. I've been using that and my file sizes come out smaller than the original and quality is excellent. This was discussed in a thread just a month or two ago.
You can try Mp4forHD that was developed by Jandre here on XDA-Devs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478050
You can use the HD settings to produce an mp4 file that gallery3D can read without problem.
Thanks guys. I thought the quality setting in handbrake was VBR and would shrink the size more than it did, but I'll look into setting a hard limit.
Thanks for the heads up on those other programs to.
-Mike
The percentage encode option in Handbrake, despite being their preferred method, doesn't make any sense to me as it's too subjective based on the quality of the input file.
Alternatively, break out the calculator and work out what bitrate you need to use to get x size.
Just use the "target size" option instead. It's not "correct" but it's easy and you know what you're going to get.
You can also try WinFF if you want something really no-frills that gets the job done. It supports multithreaded encoding (pretty sure HandBrake does too). I belive the 64bit version of handbrake is noticably quicker if your hardware support it (which it will).
use DVD shrink and then convert in handbrake. Normal movie sizes are 500-600k after DVD shrink

Handbreak works on Macs too.
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
i use handbrake at ~700-800b/s, good enough for me
I use handbreak and select "target size" for 700MB , quality is good. For music videos i do constant quality RF 23 most of the time it works well , occasional video needs extra tweaking.

If I'm not ripping a DVD but want to convert a movie to MP4 with h.264 I use iSquint on the Mac and go for Optimize for TV setting.

Don't use H.264. I use anydvd to rip any dvd on the fly with dvdshrink to .iso files, then I use handbrake to make .mp4 copies for my phones. My Nexus gets files about 330mb and my Magic get movies that work perfectly at about 170mb. Adjust video output for each target device, maintaining aspect ration of the original movie.

Good job sherlock. When you're using Handbrake, you ARE encoding to H.264. Derp.
H.264 is best since the phone has a hardware decoder for it.
I'm confused. I dl a movie online and its usually about 700mb or like 1500mb which I guess is higher quality? I think the nexus can playback 720p but I don't know how to know if I'm playing a 720p video, so what are you guys watching that you can cut them in half to 700? My ignorant assumption is that 700 is DVD quality and 1400+ is HD? I've also seen torrents that were like 6,000mb so I'm not sure what if anything about the file's quality can be determined from its size.
great info. can someone suggest a movie player?

The higher the filesize, the greater the resolution, video bitrate, audio channels, or audio bitrate.
Just because you have a higher filesize movie doesn't mean you necessarily have better quality. If you're watching movies using the screen on the nexus, why would you ever need to make sure it's 720p? Granted, it'd look better on an HD screen, but on the nexus 800x480 screen it's just not needed.
so here's my issue. it seems the video player itself has issues displaying 1920x1080 video. 1280x720 works fine, same video. same bitrate, same everything. this seems crocked.
do we know of any workaround for getting a 1080p to work. i've heard of people pulling it off, but i've spent three hours on this and i really believe it to be the player. i've tried third party clients and they're about 5fps. it's irksome.
help plz?
You know we have two different video players right? We have video player, and we also have movie player or something else like that. Try it.

What do you expect to get from playing such large videos on the Cappy? I transcode mine to 720X480 in .mkv and they are simply stunning with zero playback issues. The Cappy supports the low end HD resolution of 1280X720, not the Blu-Ray rez of 1920X1080. And it supports that rez in shooting video so that it can be played back on a larger screen. There's no benefit to playing back videos that size on the device. Resize them, you won't notice any difference in picture quality and you'll save a ton of storage space.
I have 315 bluray movies half are 1080p other is 720p so half of my media is watchable on my cappy and my tab. I use Tversity to stream to my ps3 and everything but if there was away to make it only transcode 720p to mobile devices or have a player that will resize it for us that would be awesome.

May be more of a codec problem than anything else.
While I never put anything bigger than 720p on my phone (since 1080p has no appreciable visual increase in quality on the phone screen, but a MUCH larger file size), I definitely have played 1080p on my phone before. Hence why I think it may simply be that 1080p MKV w/ certain codecs might not work. Remember that media files *legally* downloaded from the internet will often have slight variations in the parameters used when converting to MKV w/ x264/VC1/etc codec. Hence just because 2 files are "720p x264" in a Matroska container doesn't mean they are actually identically encoded. And the Galaxy S can sometimes be a bit picky about what formats it "automagically" supports and which it doesn't.
And by the way, as you clearly noticed, the "Video Player" app in Android is the only one to use the GPU to accelerate video playback. Other apps might work, but they will run the CPU way harder, and give you worse battery life. Monitoring the "time_in_state" to see what the CPU is running at, I can play 720p x264/MKV files with the CPU at only 400 MHz. Obviously, sometimes the default player won't play what you want, but it's much better to use it if at all possible.

This is the main reason I stick with the built-in player. I was on a flight from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Louis to L.A. on Tuesday and I watched 3 movies of close to six hours total length. Landed in L.A. with 31% battery still remaining.
my reasons for wanting to play 1080p is irrelevant to the scenario, i'd just like to see it done.
i considered a codec issue shammy, but i extracted a 60second sample from my crank copy and left it in 1920x1080mkv and tried it. no dice. i handbraked it to 1920x1080mp4 no dice. i once again handbraked it to 1280x720mp4. worked fantastical without any change in any settings except res. hence why i think its a limitation on res rather than codec/bitrate.
i am just IRKED all around at this. time to hit the irc and start screaming at people until somebody gives me an answer huh lmfao

How do you lose quality by resizing for the device you'll be playing on? All those extra pixels of HD resolution on a 800X420 screen do not yield better quality, they just require more CPU/GPU to process and more storage space. Nothing is gained by playing HD-sized videos on the Cappy. Absolutely nothing.
I own a small HD video production company in L.A., but don't take my word for it.
I was talking about playing the same media file from my Ps3 on my tv. I'd rather not convert my 1080p files to 720 just for my hand held I'd rather have a better way to do all of it using the files I currently have. Tversity works good but not perfect for over 3G but when I had my iPhone it would play pretty good using airvideo over 3G but there has to be something to make it all work

It would be nice to be able to do this I suppose..but if you don't mind...Why ?
If you play it on any other thing but your phone..you will not really benefit from having it this way..and also..you won't really have enough storage to hold it to be able to watch a full featured film.
Until Samsung gets off their asses and fixes the issue with making the usb-hdmi cable you will never get the output capable of seeing any difference than what you can easily do right now at 720p...If you want to ***** about something...that is what I would ***** about..They had those cables available for 1 month..and not many was ever shipped out to the stores when they introduced the phone...I've e-mailed them every week since October and the only reply is they are working on it...so...I'm not holding my breath on seeing it anytime soon since they are working on the next line of phones already..

How about I send you my 12TB of video and you can convert it all into 480p, would that suffice for you? since you have such an issue with what I do with my device and provide absolutely no helpful solution, you do it! I sure hope you have couple dual 12core opterons sitting around, because it's gonna take you awhile. currently, encoding crank.mkv time remaining: 1h5m. now realistically i'd never convert my entire collection, just whatever video I want to watch at the time. but guess what? When i'm leaving or doing something I do not have an hour to wait. It's almost faster to download a 480p copy, you realize that right. converting while dealing with 1080p is not fast, nowhere near it. I find it unlikely you have any experience in the matter, i'm sure i've put more time and effort into this than your useless 30 second out of line response, so "chump" take the attitude and leave my thread please.

alright ive been doing some more fiddling and came up wiht the following results.
using container mkv, and AVC as codec.
i started with 1920x1080 crank 60s sample gone through handbrake reducing it to about 6mb.
1920x1080 through
1282x726 do not play. at all. unknown file.
1280x720 and below play without issue, and play damn well.
the file is exactly the same codec and container, just resized. so i believe it to be an issue with the player.
http://cerjturb.net/u/crank_test_1080p.mkv
does this play on ANYONES device inside video player.

Ooh, my internet shorthand has revealed me as a fraud. You got me.
Your insistence on trying to play HD videos larger than what the device is designed for brought to mind a good analogy. You sound like a guy who bought a nice sports car and is appalled at finding out he can't run it in the Indy 500.

Could it possibly be that your video is simply beyond what the player and/or the device is designed to handle? Square peg, round hole, I say. 1280x720 is indeed within the scope of the HD specification, so there is no fraud in saying the device can play HD content. It just can't play the high end of the HD spectrum. Live with it or get another device.

I understand that, but it's like complaining that his old tube TV won't display HD signals. Or that his DVD player won't play BD discs. It just wasn't designed to do it. For a device to transcode 1080p to 720p on the fly would require a lot more horsepower than what the Captivate has under the hood. Accept and move on.
First, I understand why you want this; it's a matter of convenience and I don't blame you.

It may be the same codec and container, but what is the bitrate? A lot more data may have to be pumped through the i/o system and larger frames are going to have to be resampled. I'm not saying it is impossible on the hardware, but it might be. I seriously doubt that it's just a matter of some bug, oversight, or intentional disabling of 1080p without good reason.
I had NC with Cyanogen Mod 7. I couldn't get 720p to work on it.
Now that my NC got broken, I'm thinking of buying it again. Is there anything new about 720p?
i'd like to know too. as from the day after tomorrow i will be a Nook owner too
In this price range you're still not going to find a decent tablet with 720p capabilities. If your only goal is videos, start taking a look at the chinese tablets and the archos. If you want a tablet with the ability to do it, but not perfectly, then the nook is your best choice.
I say not perfectly, as I found that 720p video was better on the .29kernel (1300mhz) with Moboplayer. 720p works okay with overclock and Moboplayer on the .32 kernel though...
That said, 720p is overkill for that small of a screen.

Basically no, there isn't any news on the video playback front. The new B&N update's codec had the same file limitations that we had previously, so we lack the codecs for 720p (like an Archos has).
If you want 720p playback get a used Galaxy Tab.
It really isn't a problem for me to watch 720p on NC's screen, but if it was able to do it, it would save the hassle of converting the videos and movies I download for my PC.
I will try moboplayer with OC.

Technical question for you re-encoding guys. Does the 854 limit count after or before anamorphic scaling? So is it possible to play back pal 2.3 picture format movies? Native resolution 720x445, stretches to 1024 wide on-screen..
