upgrading bootloader from 1xx to 2xx - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

can any one sujjest how to upgrade the bootloader ipl/spl from 1xx to 2xx as this is required for upgrading the radio rom to 2.71

I used the guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435 to upgrade my Wizard, like you I started from rev. 1 so skipped the downgrade sections prior to the unlocking CID steps. If required to unlock CID, Mestrini's tool at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329170 will do this with simplified steps. At step 17 choose your ROM of choice with the desired IPL/SPL and radio ROM. The T-Mobile ROM listed will also replace your OS.
Mick.

If you are just going from stock to stock...just flash a 2.xx rom. I had a stock rom with a different radio, never unlocked my Wizard until I actually wanted to flash a non-stock rom.

2.xx rom downgrade issue summary

There seem to be a LOT of information about downgrades of the 2.xx based roms, and I wanted to see if I can summerise (based on my observations and understanding) and for people to correct me if I am wrong, so we get the information collated once and for all hopefully.
There seem to be a number of items of interest:
1. You need to be SuperCID unlocked to be able to upgrade and downgrade to any rom version (that includes bootloaders).
2. 1.xx rom version vs 2.xx (AKU) rom versions - You can SuperCID unlock 1.xx rom versions, but not 2.xx rom versions with the lokiwiz tool. Apparently imei-check can do 2.xx roms it for 20 UK pounds.
3. 2.xx roms prevent downgrading to a rom version below the current
4. There is a workaround method to downgrade a 2.xx rom if the rom version is below 2.17 by a custom 1.xx downgrade rom.
5. G3/G4 flash chips - bootloaders (IPL/SPL) with .0001 at the end of the version are G4 flash chips. There seems to be only 2.xx rom'ed devices with G4 flash chips floating around.
6. 2.xx official roms seem to include a G3 and a G4 version of the bootloader. 1.xx offical roms seem to only include a G3 version of the bootloader.
So, if you are trying to downgrade (including the bootloader):
1. You cannot do it (for free) if you have a rom above 2.17
2. You cannot do it (for free) if you have a G4 chip. You also cannot downgrade to a 1.xx rom if you have a G4 chip. Flashing a G3 bootloader onto a device with a G4 flash chip will "brick" the device if the device is turned off.
Question I have:
Does this mean you can downgrade a 1.xx rom, even though you have a G4 chip, if you are CID unlocked and do not downgrade the bootloaders? (If you are wondering why I might ask this, the blackberry connect client currently only works with a specific 1.xx rom version it seems, as RIM checks rom versions)
No, 2.x bootloaders don't work with 1.x Radio Roms.
My Wizard was not CID unlocked and with 2.17 ROM.
I downgraded to Button's ROM (flashed it 2 times) and got this:
IPL: 1.01
SPL: 2.17
Radio: 02.07.2
OS: 1.xx (don't remember now)
lokiwiz successfully CID-Unlocked my phone, and now I'm using 2.24..
You can't downgrade after 2.21, but with 2.17 (18?) ROM's you still can downgrade to 1.xx and unlock your phone.
If you were clever enough to search for all of machinagod's posts, the author and poster of the lokiwiz tool, you'd find this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=50768
This is known to work for the HTC Wizard line, with exception of the prophet, which has a different post - and a different file working for that phone. This thread states that you can unlock (cid/sim) SPL 2.x roms, which may include the G4 chipsets as well. I have not tested this tool, nor validated its functionality with G4 chipsets. Luckily, I have a G3 chipset, and I do not want to give it up for the life of me.

I hope this solves some mystery around the G4/SPL2.x CID unlocking issues. Try this lokiwizMSL tool and see if it works for you, posting on either machinagod's thread or in one of the newer rom threads.

From machinegod's post in the thread about lokiwizMSL 0.3a:
Q - How about the CID unlock tool? (for using any type of roms)
A - Doesn't work yet... Stay tuned
ie - lokiwiz will only CID unlock 1.x roms at this point in time.

Machinegod has said in a number of posts that the solution (to the G4 chips) is to downgrade the rom without touching the IPL/SPL. I have not seen anyone produce custom ROMS that do not include the IPL/SPL for the purpose of downgrading a 2.xx rom as yet. There is a thread that talks about cooking your own rom, and its quite involved. You may or may not have noticed thats one of my questions in my post of whether this is doable with a 2.x bootloader (G4 chip) and a 1.x rom (as I haven't seen it yet).

No, but for the purposes of CID unlocking, do we care? Does the Radio ROM problem prevent the device from entering RAPI mode?

Machinegod is right (as always): the only way to change a G4 ROM (upgrade or dowgrade) is to cook a ROM without IPL/SPL. I wrote a tutorial on how to do it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088.
bye
Incorrect.
I started off with 2.25 G3 Chipped cingular First thing i did was unlock the sim with 3.0a. Then i downgraded to 1.8 custom rom. From there i went with Loki's 2.0b CID unlock.
Just make sure you don't have 2.25.001 etc. You don't want trailing ".001" after the 2.25. if you have trailing numbers, it means that you have the G4 chips and you'll probably fry your system if you try reflashing it.

keyword - G3 chipset.
The above is refering to G4 chipsets and difficulties doing upgrades with that chipset. If you have a G4 chipset you'll have to cook your own rom without ipl/spl updates - which is what gets updated typically and requires a CID unlock.

Just on that note, I followed your lovely tutorial, cooked a ROM without the IPL/SPL and now can use the BB connect client without issues! Thanks for the tutorial.

Flash QTEK Rom To MDA ver. 2.21

Hello!
I wan't to totally get rid off the T-Mobile branding and so I decided flashing the original qtek rom ver. 2.18 GER. I used awizard to unlock cid, backup roms and afterwards tried to flash the QTEK rom. Now the program throwed error 296 "upgrade only". I read several posts in the forum describing how to do a downgrade and downloaded the CUSTOM__RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_101_11210_WWE.exe which I tried to flash to the phone before upgrading to qtek ROM. But when I try to flash the custom rom the updater gives me "ERROR 300":this ROM cannot be used with your phone.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
TIA.
okay... I read a bit more and seems that there is currently no possibility to flash another rom into my phone with version 2.21 without turning it into a brick, right? so I think I will better keep the TMO software until anyone finds a possibility to do an up- or downgrade on this...
If your IPL and SPL were 2.xx, then you can upgrade your ROM to any 2.xx Wizard rom by following this instruction: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088
Alternatively, you could install my cooked rom Wizard_Love 2.26 (it is safe, because it doesn't contain IPL and SPL part) which is a operator-independent ROM.
thx wlove!
so just to clarify that I understand it right- with this tutorial I WILL be able to flash the ver. 2.18 of the QTEK rom to my IPL/SPL ver. 2.21 phone?
Yes, just follow the instruction carefully, then you will definitely get it done (not just for 2.18 version, but for all the higher rom version as well). I have done it over and over again using this method without any problem. This method is safe, because it doesn't your touch the IPL and SPL part, even if your computer was power off in middle of flashing, you'll still be able to flash it again, your phone is not death yet. However, remember do a full charge of your battery before upgrading your ROM. Good luck.
thank you! I was finally able to flash my phone with an unbranded rom version!
Nice, enjoy your new ROM.

Upgrade to the latest ROM. If it doesnt pick up signals, just flash it with the Cingular 1.x radio
at first: flash any official 2.x ROM
second: Flash the 2.x ROM, what you need
Follow instructions by Dr. P below and good luck! It should work if you don't lost any step.

radio rom problem

hi...
i am a little noob when it comes to rom upgrading. so, i apologise if this is a stupid question. i flashed my wizard with wizard love rom. the ipl and spl both show 1.01 and os 2.26.10.2..but, no gsm.also, my phone doesn't catch signals.now, if i need to flash a radio rom, which radio rom should i flash, and is there any risk of bricking my device ??
thanks..
puja
There's very little risk (I'm definitely not going to say there's none because you always take some risk when flashing) with flashing a radio ROM. I kind of curious though, most people only flash the wizard love ROM so they can CID unlock before going on to flashing other ROM's such as a WM6 version. Are you planning on keeping the wizard love ROM as your OS? Which radio ROM you decide to flash kind of depends on where are and what ROM you're using. 2.19.11 seems to be the most popular one to flash though. Check the wizard wiki if you need to download it.
Basically flasing Radio ROM will not brick the device, and it also does not require CID unlocking.
Beside 2.19.11, 2.47.11 and 2.69.11 Radio ROM are also popular.
If you have unlocked your device after downgrading IPL and SPL, just get a 3.08 IPL/SPL upgrade package and you will get all IPL/SPL/Radio ROM upgraded to the most current version.
p.s. You now have IPL/SPL 1.01 that is too old and should be upgraded (Instead you MUST upgrade to at least 2.xx if you plan to use WM6)
i was earlier having ipl n spl 2.xx..but i wanted to unlock my device.so, i downgraded to button's 1.05 rom..but i couldn't unlock it (See my post in the topic 'The Definitive Guide to Unlocking & Rom Upgrading G3 Wizards'), after which i decided to simply flash the love rom...
What by mean of "couldn't unlock"?
What error is shown from lokiwiz/aWizard?
p.s. Unlocking require ActiveSync connection
edit. sorry

when i run 'lokiwiz.bat' as instructed, it says 'your phone is now unlocked', but my device doesn't reboot..u may read my post in ''The Definitive Guide to Unlocking & Rom Upgrading G3 Wizards"..is there any way to check if my phone is unlocked or not ???
Search for and download wizard service tool. It has a button on it that you can press and it will tell you if you're unlocked or not.
I'll save you the searching since about 10 seconds after I wrote that last post I saw the wizard service tool thread. It's here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=295038

Sum it all up: IPL/SPL+Radio+Ext.ROM+ROM itself

Hello!
I initially PM'd a few people regarding this but I think I'll get more interaction if I just made it a thread.
I have a MDA. Following the The Definitive Guide to Unlocking & Rom Upgrading G3 Wizards by Dr. Puttingham, I was able to get it unlocked and updated to T-Mobile v2.26 and the process went perfectly *smooth 'n nice*.
Now... I'm targeting XDA Mobile 6 as my new ROM (OS).
Going through the requirements of X6, I found out that it's just the ROM... no IPL/SPL, Radio, or Ext...
Also, in the guide linked above a newer IPL/SPL v3.08 is mentioned... and similarly, in the X6's thread, a note regarding a T-Mobile 2.19 UK Radio is also mentioned.
Now I have all these files but I don't know how to proceed...
what should I install first? <- Very, very Important! teh sequence
Should I go for the IPL/SPL v3?
I already studied the whole XDA Mobile 6 thread and figured that I should stick with Radio v2.19 as per mfrazzz recommendation.
So, as the title says, "PL/SPL+Radio+Ext.ROM+ROM itself"... how am I to mix them all up together?
salaaam! noticed your in lahore!
ok, i was in a similar position to you,
this is what i did:
i started off with ipl/spl 1.01
CID Unlocked and SIM-unlocked using LOKIWIZ (THIS IS IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CID-UNLOCKED!)
download the official T-Mobile 2.26 Update
Install the T-Mobile update, your IPL/SPL Changes to 2.26
download XM6,
FLASH IT!
its as simple as that once you've CID-Unlocked
you dont want to be mixing around with anything!
dont worry about IPL/SPL V3, there is very little/no gain over ipl/spl 2.26 (i actually went to ipl/spl 3.08 and then ended up downgrading to ipl/spl 2.26
Radio- use the reccommended one in the XM6 thread, no other radio roms appear to work so well with windows mobile 6
ext.rom is basically the 'extended rom' what this is, is a little area of flash memory in your wizard that, when you turn your wizard on for the first time, it installs some t-mobile customisations like the themese and dial skins and stuff.
so, in summary: after cid-unlocking and flashing 2.26 you can pretty much flash any other rom you want! its only with a G4 its a little complicated, but by the sounds of it you dont have a G4!
good luck!
oh, forgot to add:
YOU DONT WANT TO BE PLAYING AROUND WITH IPL/SPL, this is what bricks most phones
an unsuccessful OS flash can be repaired easily, but an unsuccessful COMPLETE rom update (i.e OS + ipl/spl + ext_rom) cannot be repaired so easily.
ALL of the roms in the 'Wizard Mobile 6' forums are OS ONLY, so you can flash away! just keep the official 2.26 update handy just in case!
i've never had any problems with flashing roms, and i have tried nearly all of the pandora WM6 roms (almost 10 of them i think), XM6 (the one you wish to try), WM6 BE, NBD all of his versions, TNT 2.0, Ti edition, Farias real thing and now ive settled on my own cooked rom!
Thank you so much Duke!
Okay, this just leaves a bit of room for Radio... the TMv2.26 has radio v02.25.11... I downloaded the recommended Radio version.
Should I update the ROM first or the Radio?
i would upgrade the radio rom first
provided you've cid-unlocked,you can flash every rom on the forums as though they were official updates!
good luck!
proper method would be to make sure if you have the phone unlocked first (follow whichever method is indicated on the unlocking thread).
then, flash to an official rom (whether it's the us t-mobile 2.26 or the german/european 3.08). these roms have ipl/spl, radio, and os (wm5) in them.
afterwards flash with the custom rom of your choice. most recent roms on the forum seem to be os only, so you don't have to worry about the other parts (ipl/spl, radio). older wm5 roms use to have ipl/spl integrated in them (faria, molski, xelencin). just make sure you read the corresponding thread by the rom chef for the rom you're looking to upgrade to.
finish off with the radio update. most radio rom flashs are designed to be radio only.
in summary:
unlock --> official t-mobile rom --> custom rom --> radio rom
Success
"Success"
monkey_knight, I already flashed according to duke_stix's procedure: unlock --> official t-mobile rom --> radio rom --> custom rom
All went well and I can't be any happier! This is the best ROM I've seen and to all my friends saying that WM6 is for those 600MHz processors: In your Face!
I feel my MDA is faster on this ROM then the official one!
Thanks a million to all you guys. You are all Cyber-Wizard (Level 255)
