Motorola Rises After Saying It May Drop Mobile Phones - Off-topic

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Motorola Inc., which has lost mobile- phone market share to all of its major rivals, rose the most in almost four years in New York trading after saying it may bow to shareholder pressure and shed its money-losing handset unit.
Chief Executive Officer Greg Brown said yesterday that the Schaumburg, Illinois-based company is exploring its options, including a possible separation of its mobile-devices business.
The announcement pleased investors including billionaire Carl Icahn, who have demanded that the company dispose of the unit. The business, which accounts for about half of Motorola's revenue, lost $388 million last quarter as customers defected to phones from Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc.
``Enough people, from Carl Icahn to many others, have suggested that this is the best thing for Motorola to do,'' said Mark Mowrey, a Laguna Beach, California-based analyst at Al Frank Asset Management, which owns Motorola shares. ``I hope it's not a reaction from the executive side to a lot of the near-term sentiment the company is hearing from investors.''
Motorola jumped $1.11, or 9.7 percent, to $12.61 at 3:31 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, the most since April 2004, after rising 13 percent to $12.97 earlier. The stock had fallen 42 percent in the past year before today.
Citigroup Inc. upgraded the shares to ``buy'' from ``hold'' after the announcement.
Motorola's phone shipments plunged 38 percent last quarter after it lost customers to Apple's iPhone and camera phones from Samsung. That brought Motorola closer to losing its spot as the third-largest handset maker in the world.

What company would you get rid off the planet?

I made this thread because I'm pretty sure other threads are made of this topic but I wanted to create a newer one since all these new products are coming out.
I would choose Apple because:
1)Selling over priced, under powered (for the price) computers that have no customization (well barely and I mean like building your own)
2) Changing the animal on their OS, add a .1, add features that can come in an update, and calling it a whole new OS.
3) Selling the iPhone and making the iPad (the iPod touch seems like the only good Apple Product). They don't know what the term "smart" phone means. I mean no multi tasking, boring, un-creative UI. The features in the iPhone/iPad may have been ground breaking 7 years ago but not today.
4) How it makes the fanboyz/fangirlz go crazy about the product because they hypnotized them about how they are good and the other companies are evil. The fanboyz/fangirlz are mad because they spent a lot of cash on an over priced piece of doo-doop) and they have to unleash their anger on past mistakes of another company while forgetting about the new features in the product today.
I like only one thing of apple products and mostly their software for computers: They have pretty good video editing software and that is pretty much it.
Unleash your inner fanboy/fangirl and just rant.
Apple has done a lot for the world though, with the ipod influencing other MP3 players, as well as showing that the linux based operating system can be used in mainstream media. I'd go more with AT&T and verizon mostly because of the monopolies that they have on the cell phone market right now. I'd rather have no contract phones which allow a pay per use plan. Either that or Walmart because of their screwing consumers.

I agree with you completely. Don't forget Quicktime (terrible UI and runs background services), iTunes (way to lock up music, Apple), iPods (same dial, same disk space, half the price elsewhere), and the iPod touch (what's the purpose or purchasing a stand-alone portable media wifi device again? that must come in real handy on the beach, in clubs, bars, and everywhere else wifi doesn't exist).
Also, who can really respect a company that basically releases dumbed-down technology basically saying that their customers are slow and stupid and lack self-respect when it comes to not being able to customize their portable devices? Notice how in the Windows Phone 7 Series walk-through found on MSDN today, the president/manager of the project said, "If you buy the phone we are going to let you customize it."
Also, special mention for Verizon, who really has worked hard to rip off the average consumer.

They simply do not care that people hate them, they have no new phones, except updated Tilts and Diamonds. They have the absolute worst customer service

Latest example: My wife and I split ( no big deal , long time coming ) she decided that she wanted to take the iPhone that I bought her and the Propel that I bought her son, both of which I had put on my account, and get her own acount with AT$T. Without any notice to me, AT$T allowed her to take the phones and signed her up to two new two year contracts, and as I only found out yesterday, charged me with $300 dollars in early termination fees. When I challenged them on this, they said that I can always continue to pay for the numbers until the contract runs out. I asked them , since they allowed her to take the phone off of my account, why don't they just terminate the contract.
They informed me that the contract was for the numbers not the handsets. And that who ever was using the handsets, was out of their control. They further said that the contracts are meant to offset the subsidizing of the phones. I clearly pointed out that holding me to the balance of the original contract for the phones and then signing them up to two new two year contracts for the same two phones, was " double dipping " and that any reasonable customer service rep who wanted to keep a 7 year customer with four phones on AT$T would see that by cancelling the two contracts, AT$T was not losing any money and had infact guaranteed themselves more money by signing the ex and her son to two new 2 year contracts.
At which point they continued their mantra " the contract was for the phone numbers, not the phones themselves. " At which point, I cancelled the two phones that I had that were out of contract. Put the ex and her son's # on suspended service for $9.99 a month until the contract expires. And now must make a decision on what to do with my iPhone in July when that contract runs out. In the last seven years, I have paid AT$T $ 10,000- $14,000 in connection fees, and some dope in their customer service dept is forcing me to go elsewhere over $300 in early termination fees that are being paid for by " double dipping " in another account. Stupidity like this has got to go.
Where would this company be if Steve Jobs decides to yank there heads out of his butt ?

Probably AT&T. AT&T has terrible service nearly everywhere, crappy customer service (moreso than most telcos), and poor overall selection of devices.
Ever since the iPhone was introduced, AT&T has basically given up on maintaining their network at a usable level. The worst is when you call their terrible customer service only to be greeted by a voice announcing that they are "home of the iPhone" before you actually get help. I don't hate the iPhone, I have a few of them in fact, but I hate how AT&T having exclusivity over the iPhone has led to them ignoring all other aspects of their company.
They've almost forgotten about Windows Mobile and have completely ignored Android and WebOS devices, instead opting for more feature phones, because we all need more $20 Nokias and Samsungs. AT&T stopped trying once they got exclusivity of the iPhone, figuring that they wouldn't have to actually get business by being good at what they do, but rather by forcing people into switching in order to get their desired device.
If you don't believe me about the terrible customer service, I have a story for you. For Christmas of 2009, my mother and sister wanted iPhone 3GSes to replace their aging original iPhones. My father I waited to go to the AT&T store until the night before, because one of the incompetent CS representatives we talked to over the phone said that the original iPhones would deactivate, and we didn't want them deactivated for very long, should they need their phones. However, this was untrue, meaning we had to wait in long lines on Christmas Eve when we could have bought the iPhones months ago with no negative effects
After we finally got served by a representative, we were told that the bill we had mailed out almost two weeks ago still hadn't been processed yet, and in order to pay the lower upgrade price instead of the full retail price (~$500), we would have to pay the bill at the store, and have the check we mailed out be credited to our account. After we did that, the lady sold us the iPhones, which seemed fine. Except it wasn't fine, since she upgraded of the iPhones on my father's account, instead of my mother's which was a pain to deal with when we bought my father an iPhone a few weeks later. After we finally got the iPhones and drove home, we immediately got a call from the AT&T store, letting us know that the woman who sold us the iPhones had forgotten to put one of them back in the box after activating it, meaning we had to drive back again and pick up the phone which they forgot. The moral of this story is that AT&T is a horrible company, and a good portion of their customer service representatives are incapable of doing their jobs properly or giving correct information.
I actually have a few more AT&T stories to share, but I think I'd probably run past the 10,000 character post limit were I to share them all
AT&T...I left them a few years ago because of their ripoff plans, iphonia, no customer support, etc.

This is true! I listed one, but could have easily listed hundreds!
I'm not against corporations in general; I'd love to take money from consumers to better myself. But I do have a problem with every Apple idiot thinking Apple is doing great when really they are just taking advantage of people without their own identities and morons.

I'm hoping that this is sarcasm and that you realize that this is actually support against Apple's dominance. Stock prices for the most part are based on hype and a LACK of knowledge about a company. There's more idiots than smart people in the US, so a company like Apple should thrive. George W. Bush got elected twice. There are plenty of idiots around to think Apple is worth it.

Microsoft Confirms 1.5M WP7 Sold in the first 6 Weeks

This is really good news for Microsoft and for WP7. In the article they made mention of Apple's IPhone4 sales of 1.7M in 3days. I don't believe the comparison is justified considering people know what the Iphone was before it launched.
I believe WP7 will do very in 2011 considering over 18000 developers have signed on to build apps for this new platform.
So we have 4200 Apps in 2months and counting on WP Marketplace. Android does not even boast of these numbers when it first launched. It took Google's Android OS about 7-8months to reach those numbers.

I read it as manufacturers' sales to retailers.
That means you can sell 1.5 million phones but they might all be sitting on shelves in shops and store rooms.
Manufacturer sells to a retailer, I believe that's a sale. It doesnt matter when the phone gets to an end consumer. A sale is a sale.
I like the optimism but these figures don't show traction.
I'm sure that will come provided we get the fabled updates early next year.

In addition, need I remind you that we are claiming 104apps daily, but this is certain to grow as the months go by. Currently Andriod boasts about 300 daily while Apple boasts about 1000. But this all happens with time.
Like what you said, the updates will give it a boost as well as Verizon and Sprint announced to be involved with the phone as well this coming January to March.
I am just optimistic and I want to see a stronger competition.

Tesco Reveals Android Now Outsells iPhone

Retail giant Tesco has revealed that its sales of Android-based mobile phones has surpassed those of Apple's iPhone on its network.
Tesco Mobile, which offers mobile phone services based on the O2 network, said that iPhone sales were ahead of Android handsets before Christmas 2010, the sales figures equalled out in January, with Android surpassing iPhone in February.
The company said that judging by the current situation, Google's Android platform will grow meteorically in 2011. Apple's introduction of the iPhone 5, likely to be in the middle of this year, will no doubt have a significant affect on Android's market share.
Graham Harris, chief executive officer of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile, said in a statement “As one of the UK's leading operators, these sales are a useful barometer for smartphone trends. There is a lot of choice in the market and as a result consumers are driving healthy competition between rival operating systems.”
Tesco's announcement comes after a recent smartphone study conducted by research firm IDC revealed that shipments of Android based smartphones to western Europe had grown by 1,580 per cent year-on-year.
The IDC predicts that Android will see a compound annual growth rate of 37% between 2010 and 2015 in western Europe.

The iPhone is 26 percent Samsung

So Apple is suing the pants off of Samsung in Europe, in Australia and possibly everywhere else. That’s because it claims that (1) Samsung stole the look and technology of the iPhone for the highly successful Galaxy S II Android phones, and (2) Samsung stole the look and technology of the iPad for the rising tablet stars, the Galaxy Tab 10.1/8.1.
But that doesn’t stop the two from being the best of friends when it comes to other business matters.
Utilizing data from “teardown” research firm iSuppli, The Economist reports that the iPhone 4 is 26 percent Samsung. At least in terms of components. According to iSuppli’s reverse engineering data, Samsung supplies three key components for the iPhone 4: the flash memory ($26), DRAM memory ($11.60), and the applications processor ($8.08).
Apple doesn’t do any of its manufacturing, leaving the dirty work to its Asian partners. Manufacturers in fact earn just a pittance compared to what Apple earns, which is an estimated $368 per phone (!). Apparently, that money is tribute money for Apple’s design, marketing and engineering prowess.
So despite the lawsuits and legal wranglings, Apple needs Samsung, and vice versa.
The question now is who needs who even more?
Because the iPhone has captured over 19 percent of the global market, Apple is a lucrative partner for Samsung. On the other hand, few companies can deliver quality components in volume the way Samsung can, so Apple will be hard pressed to find another supplier who can fit the bill the way Samsung does.
Besides, Samsung’s components business unit is separate from its consumer electronics units. So they probably couldn’t care less about what the other is up to… unless the CEO steps in.
You should qualify that with "for now." Once all these chip manufacturers like VIA (via HTC ) and Samsung are done playing with Apple's lawsuit frenzy, I'd fully expect repercussions (especially if it hurts their stock price). Don't expect a board of directors to sit idly by while Apple (their customer) tries to crush their corporate value.
The tech world is pretty incestuous. I bet most tech execs don't actually know where their supplies are coming from half the time.

Samsung has announced a preview of the Galaxy S5 on February 24th at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Sort of. Invites have gone out to the press for what Samsung is describing as Unpacked, Episode 1 with a large 5 emblazoned on the invite (twice). All a big tease. Might it backfire?
The announcement has been picked up around the world. A Galaxy launch is a big event. But there is a hint that this time round Samsung is desperate to get a new device out there and to use the attendant publicity to drive sales in a very tight market. Samsung needs this more than we do.
In the middle of last year, not long after the S4 launch I suggested Samsung had peaked in smartphones. The evidence since then has been pretty compelling. Samsung’s sales seem to have stalled more dramatically than Apple’s.
In June 2013 Samsung gave guidance on record profits. By Q4 Bloomberg reported the first drop in profits in 9 quarters.
Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) posted its first profit decline in nine quarters as new Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhones won over high-end handset buyers and models from cheaper Chinese producers lured budget customers.
It’s clear that the Samsung pricing cascade is running out of steam. You have to go back some years, to the general consumer electronics industry and in particular TVs to see this cascade at work. Remember it?
Launch at a high price/high margin to soak the early adopters, discount to acquire market share; and when that stops working, launch a new generation product. Soon after the S4 was available the price differential in different parts of the world exceeded $300 as they played this cascade out in different markets.
Now Samsung needs sales, not least to support its vast manufacturing capacity. According to Daewo Securities, “Samsung shipped 13 million units of its S4 in the fourth quarter, down from 17 million in the previous three months.” That’s a reduction of 4 million units in the buying season.
Because of its pricing model, Samsung is also in danger of ceding high margin sales to Apple more generally.
There will be novelty in the S5 to try to win margins back, however. Leaks in January suggest Samsung will sport a new UI in the S5, possible powered by Google NOW. The two companies have been working more closely lately and more product integration would be no surprise. Samsung has also been working hard on its branding, despite being caught out manipulating social media reviews of competitors. I covered some of that brand investment here on Forbes.
Yet it is in software and services integration that Samsung still lags. Software has been named a new national priority for Korea, a move reported by The New Yorker, recently. In the software and services arena, in promoting service revenue in place of hardware margins, Samsung is a decade behind Apple. The strain of being hardware first is beginning to tell.

Samsung's suffering the same thing Apple is - Western smartphone markets are approaching saturation which is causing a drop in margins as manufacturers turn to emerging markets where selling price and margin are lower. In quarterly revenue, market share, and margin growth Samsung still outperformed all other Android device manufacturers based on last quarter's earnings. Their revenue was actually up but their earning's were depressed because of lower margins in mobile devices. LG (who gets over half their mobile revenue from dumb phones) and the other Chinese (physically based and selling market) manufacturers showed YOY gains but everyone else is dying including Sony, HTC, and Motorola.
So if articles like you quoted predicting Samsung's death and desperation are true I hope you like Apple and iOS. Because if changing market conditions are going to kill Samsung then they'll be the last to go behind every other brand discussed on XDA.

Quite an intelligent response. I didn't perceive the article as pointing towards the death of Samsung. Samsung obviously isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I'd rather be without a phone than having an Apple product.

The is the problem you going to get In an ecosystem with so many competition. Every manufacturer costs raise to compete with each other and in the end becomes a zero sum game for them. Just like sony needing to exit their PC biz, some manufacturers who can't play well in smartphone world will need to exit too.
Only winner here is Google and in some way Apple owning their own ecosystems, Consumers definitely benefit the most with the amount of choices of phones out there to tinker with
Phones are overpriced anyway. I've never seen the actual costs but it's silly.
I think if anyone's in danger Apple are in trouble. They are still overpricing. I know quite a few who have jumped ship from Apple.

Samsung is being force to compete now, the likes of LG has making them a little bit more competitive, which is a good thing since before Samsung was the Android king and the King of smart phone besting out Apple and Window phones. Since the LG G2 was introduce, Samsung customer have been looking toward LG direction, I am one of them and I am glad I picked the G2 over the S4. Let the two giant battle it out, the winner will be the customer.
