Hello,
REALLY enjoying my new Tilt. Currently using my second ROM from the fine chefs here. Started off with Dutty's V1 19588, GPS worked fine. Now I have been using Garmin's DK2.1 Final Cleartype, but cannot get the GPS to connect to the satellites.
Currently when I run GPS Tool, the program loads and I select open to start the connection. Data starts coming in and I switch to the satellite page. After a minute or 2 a few satellites appear on the screen (3-4 red circles, along with the corresponding bars at the bottom, which I assume indicates signal strength). The signal strength bars never get above about half and none of the satellites ever connect to give my location.
What am I doing wrong? What settings do I need to check?
Thanks for your time.
Zack
similar problem here too.
I cant make to work garmin mobile XT after I updated to dutty's WM6.1 it cant find internal GPS it just keeps scanning blue tooth.
it was working great on WM6. is there something different on WM6.1? do I need to install something els to make internal GPS working?

Since the GPS is firing up and you're seeing satellites it sounds like your settings are correct. GPS performance can vary greatly among different radios. What radio were you running with Duttys? WHat radio do you have now? If the Dutty radio is compatible with Garmin DK2.1 try flashing it and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise check the radio thread in the ROM board and see which ones get mentioned for good GPS performance.

Did you make any changes to the settings under "External GPS"? You don't want to touch that at all. The last info I knew (almost a year ago) was that if you changed those settings the only way to get the internal GPS recognized again was to do a hard reset. Hopefully there's an easier solution.
Will have to check which radio came with duttys, but the Radio I am using with Garmin DK2.1 is Neon 1.65.24.36, which was supposed to provided better overall GPS and phone performance. *shrug* Think I am going to give Garmin's new DKv31 a try then start playing with the radio.
Also do you recommend any specific GPS management program? Garmin comes with GPS Tools and Duttys came with GPS Test. I preferred the look of GPS test, but GPS Tools seems to provide more information.
Thanks again for the helpful reply!
This has been discussed several times.
I think one of the longuest thread on the subject can be found here :

Mainly, people think it is due to Radio version.
For me it started working again after urgrading the HardSPL.
You can see my config in my signature.
Good luck
These posts belong in the ROM thread, not here.
ok, so this may be a lame question and probably depends on a lot of variables but can anyone suggest a good radio for use in the uk??
is there such a thing, i've tried lots and so far seem to like a few but i still can't get the bl**dy GPS to work properly
i get a loke in about 10 mins if lucky.
i've used poldo's rom and ngy's and pda ultimate, and for my purposes poldo's seems the quickest and most stable to me.
any help would be appreciated.

Using Radio in sig, lock about 2-3 mins, using mcguider "to which isn't the greatest sat nav prog"
yeah thanks for that. used that for a while, made my rom fast but gps lock was poor.
what do you think of the emo radio?
cheers mate
UK Radio version
I have dutty's 6.1 final with radio version 1.58.25.14. I am on T-Mobile and all is fine with my Kaiser. All this software was from the Kaiser software section on XDA.
Hope this helps

Haven't used emo as have used the radio mentioned with no issue on every ROM i flash and even 3 carriers.
Do you use quickgps and have you tryed running GPSTest as you will find fix faster, also will always take longer for fix off cold boot.
I used to live in Solihull area of Birmingham and use 1.71.09.01 radio with 3G switched on (HSDPA off) and I could leave it with data connected all day and sync my mail every 15 minutes and at the end of the day after a few short calls I would still have 40 - 50% left.
I have just moved to South Wales (valleys area) and the same setup down there my battery is on 0% by 4pm. So I have had to kill 3G and set mail to manually refresh to get through the day.
fixed it
gps test installed and a new radio 1.65.16.25
get a gps fix in about 10secs.
i come from south wales, lived near the vally's in bedwas. now live and work in greenwich london.

thanks for everyones input.

Glad you got this resolved but I used that Radio with the 'initial' UK HTC official WM 6.1 ROM update and it well and truely broke my GPS (compared to the WM 6.0 setup in my sig I'm back to using). I have no need to use gps test or any programs other that Tomtom Navigator 6.032 so I strongly suspect your results have more to do with GPS Test or the ROM, than that particular radio.
Hello there,
I bought a week ago a second hand kaiser, and i noticed that it already had the hyper dragon IV lite rom flashed, so i told myself, all the hard work is done, go try some custom roms.
And I did, there was some lite ones, some plenty of softwares, some 6.5, but the thing i want from this phone is: THE GPS and the MP3 player, thos are the most important things for me, since i am all the time moving here and there, i really need them.
So, in order to be a more independant guy, i searched, and i searched again, i found some useful threads that made my gps work (because it almost wasn't working i bought it), and some others that made GPSTest display high bars on gps detecting but no fix at all (it also screwed my signal, and fu**** up my camera, and that's bad), all that by changing radio roms and trying.
And well i am very tired of trying again and again, feel just like if i was stuck in the middle of nowhere.
So, my questions:
Does the gps really work better on 6.0wm than the 6.1 and 6.5?
Does the gps really work better on stock roms than cooked ones?
Does the quickgps software really improve the speed to get a FIX?
How long are the bars your devices display when you activate your GPSTest soft? (i'm having a quarter max, and when i say a quarter, it is really the down limit of the quarter, it rarely go upper)
I have a tomtom 7.450 soft, and this thing is all the time saying bad gps reception (sometimes it even end up screaming no gps harware), is it normal?
So what software do you use for navigation?
I really don't care about cooked roms optimisations, fast and everything and all that, i want to be able to answer and emit calls, receive and send SMS, write some notes from time to time, and make GPS working great, wanna have a super fast fix.
I'm living at Brussel in belgium, living in the 5th floor, and testing my gps close to window, or i go to a parc 10 minutes away from home.
I am ready to try almost everything that can guis ALL of US to have a better GPS!
This works for me.

I've heard it does but they'd have to do pretty well to surpass the GPS performance and simplicity I'm getting from my current setup.

As I charge my TyTN II by putting it to bed in its cradle every night (which is connected via USB to my PC on the internet), it automatically updates its QuickGPS data so it's hardly ever more than a day old any way. Often times during a day while I've got an active data connection I'll also manually initiate a QuickGPS download. Interestingly, the HTC Official WM 6.1 'update' for my TyTN II broke this feature and QuickGPS wouldn't automatically update when plugged into its cradle - even manual updates didn't make a difference though as far as WM 6.1 was concerned.

I have version 6.032 which came with my HTC Branded TyTN II on an accompanying CDROM. It's still avail for purchase although for some crazy reason TomTom wont sell version 7 or even an upgrade to it so there's no official way to buy it except for on the devices it comes with. If you get hold of version 6 from TomTom on a device kitted out as per mine, it will work and work well - unless you have lead lined walls and heat reflective film on your windows in which case you'll only get good performance outside.

Similar priorities to me, the only true speed/performance related area I find important is GPS, reliability is the next preference and thats where the Radio version I'm using comes into things. I found that although 1.27.12.11 gave quick GPS fixes, sometimes when Pocket Media Player was playing a music or video file, it'd stall its playback while waiting for TomTom to get a fix. Radio version 1.27.12.32 fixes this and also gives quick GPS fixes. I have tried even newer radios (2 versions of 1.27.15.32) but alas as is with the case of many of the newer offerings, that was a step backwards in terms of GPS performance (at least here in the UK (/Europe?).
There is a section in the xda-dev wiki all about improving GPS performance if you haven't already found it.
I had tomtom 7 and the gps fix in that software was horrible for me. Even when google maps and gpstest had a good fix, tomtom would say "bad signal" or "no signal. I switched to igo which locks in after a minute and works perfectly. The other problem that could be affecting you might be the radio version. I had one radio that would make my GPS useless; it would never connect. Try changing your radios and see if that helps.

I don't understand what you're getting at. The precise setup in my signature works really well for GPS. If you flash all those components and aren't to far away from the UK, I imagine it'll work well for you - there's no harm in trying.

Thats because you've not read the relevant ROM Flashing wiki's and stickies enough to know that you must use a WM 6.0 Radio with a WM 6.0 ROM. I suggest you spend more time revising things in this area as it WILL be time well spent and you'll learn more about your device.

You did read the part in the wiki about making sure you have a WM 6.0 compatible SPL version didn't you (SPL questions? section covers it well). Again, you need ALL the bits in my sig (note that I don't need or use GPStest under this WM 6.0 setup). I cant say how it'll go with other than TomTom 6 as thats all I've used apart from Google Maps which also works very well on this setup - you might want to try the free Google Maps for testing purposes if you have a data package from your network provider.
I got my current setup by flashing hardSPL 1 then the complete ROM shown in my sig (which came with 1.27.12.11 Radio originally) then upgrading the radio to 1.27.12.32, then flashing the HTC 1.93 spl (this last step shouldn't be necessary though if you think you'll be doing more flashing).
I'm using the official WM6.1 and the GPS lock is horrible. I can see it getting signal from a number of sats but it can take 10minutes to lock in sometimes. I've read some threads on the subject, and have tried Quick GPS and have aGPS off, but neither guarantees a quick lock.
I seem to recall WM6.0 was better but it was also using a different radio then as well.
Anyway, sorry nothing I can offer to help.

I agree, short of trying a custom WM 6.1 ROM, with no guarantee of success or installing third party apps to 'help' the GPS work properly, IMO WM 6.1 is a lost cause as far as GPS is concerned.
I had the same problems with the GPS, what I've found to work is using a program called GPSToday. there are 2 programs, one is a today plugin, and the other is a program. I use the program, and it really makes a difference for me. If you do a search in the Kaiser software forum, you will find more information about it. I use it with TomTom software, i start GPS today a min or 2 before i start tomtom and i get a fix right away.

If i can help by anyway send a pm please
This post should be made sticky for future information!
EDIT:
I have to Warn you Guys: In order to have the GPS working you have to follow this procedure:
Flash the 1.56.405.5 rom and then flash the 1.27.12.32 radio rom, and finally flash the SPL, otherwise GPS will not work, i just tested that
Did the Wm6.0 up/downgrade also resolve the precission of the GPS?
Iam now on WM6.1 WWE with radio 1.70.19.09 and hardSPL 3.56 with a realy fast GPS fix within 30 secs. no problems with that
But the problem is that I mention a little lag kind of thing when navigation with TT7 in my car. The Tomtom arrow is little bit behind with the reality it is usable though but if i connect it to an external sirfIII gps mouse it is more accurate.
So I wonder if you guys also have a slight GPS lag with WM6.0...

I searched a found several posts that say that using GPS Gate will fix problems with signal loss on the GPS. My GPS worked perfectly under factor 6.0, started failing using 6.1. Does anyone have a real explanation for what is going on, and if there is a cooked 6.1 or 6.5 that fixes the issue without relying on running some other "fixer" program first?
From my investigation, it appears that the GPS just stops sending for long periods (often 30 - 45 seconds) and then sends a burts of several messages, and then goes silent again. Repeat and rinse. This obviously drives Destinator 6 MAD (although "visualgpsce" seems to get updates every few seconds. Don't know why unless that program is polling for GPS data instead of waiting for it to be sent).

Anybody notice whacky GPS performance late last week?
Me and a friend had the GPS totally fail Friday and Saturday (it said we were 100's of miles from where we actually were).
Now it's back to normal.
Satellite glitch?
bteljuice, joshkoss,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, updating factory 6.1 with the 1.70.19.09 radio didn't help. I'm not sure it's the radio - some programs work and others do not, while all worked fine under WM6.0. I am running Destinator 6, which loses the signal every 3 or 4 seconds for up to several minutes, and also VisualGPSCe, which works perfectly... - what software are you folks running?
Brian.
Abt ur GPS woes: not sure if it true
Google this "GPS System May Soon Begin Deteriorating"
There is alot of thread on this but cant seems to locate the offical source.
This might be 1 of the possible reason to explain how our GPS goes whaco at times.
I've been having problems with my T-Mo MDA (HTC Wizard) and picked up an AT&T Tilt to replace it. I've SIM and CID unlocked it, but I'm getting terrible signal strength on it. It's rare for me to have more than 2 bars in places where I'd have 4 bars with the MDA. So I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue or if I just haven't hit on the right radio version yet (I've tried 5 of them so far). Anyone have any ideas? I like the phone, but if I can't get a decent signal on it then it's not worth keeping.
I've used T-Mo phones on AT&T before (in fact the G1 gets some of the best AT&T reception I've ever seen) and vice versa, so it's probably a matter of hitting on the right radio. The Tilt radios are optimized for AT&T natrually, so be sure to try an assortment of radios. It is definitely a pain, in fact I have not hit on the perfect one for me yet (and I'm using a Tilt on AT&T lol) but you should definitely be getting better performance than you are, so keep trying
GENERALLY...let me say this again so i dont get flamed....GENERALLY.... The best radios currently out for Kaisers are
1.71.09.01 (been reported by some to shorten battery life however ALMOST ALL have reported a MUCH better signal and quicker GPS fix)
1.70.19.09 (Seemingly the most stable, with pretty good battery life, you will usualy get a solid signal and get most of your calls.)
I am on T-Mobile and have tried both radios on WM 6.1 and WM 6.5.x, I switch between the two depending on my needs but mostly stick with 1.70.19.09 and get pretty solid usage. However if your almost always near a charger, or never away from one for more than a few hours, give 1.71.09.01 a try and test its battery life on yours.
You can find both here:

they are the two at the bottom of that post.
just finished a "desk test" of every radio I could find. Sitting here at my desk I have 4 bars on the Wizard regardless of where I placed it. I flashed the Tilt with every radio ROM I could find and tested in two locations on the desk: most had 2 bars in both locations, a few of the radios had 3 bars at one location and 2 bars at the other. With most of the radios I also made a test call to our local time and temp to guage call quality.
I'm going to try the 1.71.09.01 radio this weekend and see if it gives me any trouble in places like Lowes. I was really hoping to find a radio that would give me signal strength close to what i had with the Wizard

I can gaurentee the 1.71 will give you some really great reception just be prepared for the battery drainage.
My personal recomendation is the newest 1.65 ROM that's one of the AT&T official ones, I get decent bars and rock solid calls with that on AT&T.
I'm going to be putting it up for sale on CraigsList or eBay this weekend. Signal strength just isn't cutting it. Spotty reception along a major highway (4 bars to 2 in less than 1/2 a mile and dropped the call while I was talking to my girl ), no signal in the restaurant I had lunch at today, no signal at Lowes, no signal at Sams Club, and weak/no signal at my local grocery store. The restaurant was new to me, but in the other places I normally have 3 or 4 bars when using the Wizard.

Really? Even with the 1.71? That is surprising. What OS rom are you using? I have actually had OS Roms that seemed to effect my signal, also have you made sure 3G in your data is off? Since our phones arent compatible with T-Mos 3G this could be effecting your signal (it will still attempt to search for a 3G signal) try turning your data off if your not using it, there are alot of things. Last but not least I just now noticed you said you JUST bought it.....are you sure its a Tilt and not a Tilt II? If its a tilt II that would be a great reason why its not working.

Yup...really!
I'm using JJ Blaster's WM6.5.3 build 23518 ROM right now.
3G and bluetooth and wi-fi and everything else are all turned off as I don't use them and wanted to limit battery drain.
Haha, thanks for the laugh. Yes, I'm sure it is a Tilt, even says 8925 under the battery. Never hurts to check the basics though
LOL you would be surprised sometimes, some people look at their phones and then look at the pictures of the phones in the forums and choose one that looks similiar...er you get the idea. Anyway I just called my buddy in your area who has a kaiser on t-mo and he told me he is using the 1.71 radio and gets great signal no matter where he goes, he is using it with the TPC 23071 Stock-Like Rom NORMAL VERSION He did say he is sticking with those roms as he has had probs with the other ones. Give it a shot, TPC makes some pretty good roms. Let me know what ur results are.
just flashed that rom....flashed the stock HTC WWE ROM first...and signal is about the same as with the other ROM's in my 'desk test'. It did seem to hold on to three bars a little longer than the others, but it did drop down to two.
Just before flashing the Tilt I had the Wizard up and going again (resynching txt messages and the like) and had a solid four bars with it.
I'll take the Tilt in to work tomorrow with my Wizard in tow....if it's still bad there I'll switch back over and move on. I'm running out of ideas. I updated the HardSPL to jockyw2001's 3.56 version today as well, that's the SPL version the chef of my previous ROM is using, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
OK....work results are just depressing. With the Tilt, sitting at my desk, I have no service. if I position it just right, I can get 1 bar...just enough to send/receive txt messages. I switch over to the Wizard and I have a solid 4 bars.
I don't know why I'm getting such poor signal with the Tilt when I'm getting excellent signal on the Wizard. I'm open to trying other things, but I'm thinking it's a lost cause.
Current setup on the Tilt is:
HardSPL: jockyw2001's 3.56 HardSPL
ROM: TPC 23071 Stock-Like Rom NORMAL VERSION
Radio: 1.71.09.01
Carrier: T-Mobile
Location: St. Louis metro area
Well I am at a loss, but I want you to look at one more thing, in your data connection settings if t-mobile is using epc.tmobile.com to internet2.voicestream.com do a soft reset, see if any diffrent, if that doesnt help, then I am sorry, you very well might have a hardware issue, as my buddy is in STL Metro area throughout most of the day and he says it works great.
it was set to wap.voicestream.com, I changed it as you directed, and the results of the desk test are the same. No obvious change. My girlfriend is on AT&T, I might borrow her SIM and throw it in to see if that gets 4 bars or not during the desk test. When I bought it, the guy had his AT&T SIM in it to show that it worked and it had 4 bars then....and I think it briefly had 4 bars on T-Mo when I was driving down the highway...so the phone is technically capable of it.
thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it. pass along my thanks to your buddy too.
I do not have an issues with t-mobile on my ATT Tilt
I have the following radio/hardspl:
Radio: 1.71.09.01
HardSPL: 3.56
I also am testing out AndriodonHTC.com and it works very well with these.
