Help on Disabling 3G and Process Termination - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi helpful forumers,
I have two questions that some Diamonders might ask.
Knowing that the battery life span is short, many will find ways to cut down on battery consumption to extend the day.
Forgive me if I am wrong, I've read some where that disabling 3G is a way and to terminate process that are useless in the task manager.
My question is, how do I disable 3G? I've used Advanced Config to select disable connection of GPRS/3G. But somehow, the 3G icon still pops out.
There are a few process in the task manager that consumes huge amount of memory. Which are the ones that can be terminated?
My memory is always at a range of 54% to 69% on when I did nothing. Is it normal?
Help appreciated.

Here you are.

Battery drops almost 1% a minute in 3G?

Hi, i've had my tilt for about a month now, and I have a really large complaint about the battery.. I now have a rom with a battery % meter, and when i'm using anything with 3G, whether it be youtube, checking e-mails, or internet, it sucks almost 1% of battery life per minute!! I have kaisertweak set to turn 3G off after two minutes, but still, what If i'm on IM and I need to wait for someone to message me? I can't have 3g off and expect to recieve anything, but I still don't want to lose my battery in 1 hour if I leave 3g running!
This has ALWAYS been a big complaint about 3G, not only for Kaiser, That's originally why Apple didn't release 3G on their first iPhone. It sucks batteries faster than and Fat kid sucks Twinkies.
Note: The mention of Twinkies is purely for dramatic effect. Tha Hostess company and its employees and affiliates do not authorize or endorse this statement in any way.

You could do a google search for the tweak that turns on the 3G switch in the Comm manager (I'm running the stock AT&T Rom, so I don't know if it's different for custom ROM's etc.) which will switch the phone to Edge rather than HSDPA. This will increase your battery life and still allow you to use IM etc. Internet will just be slower.
EDIT: IT's not a tweak I was thinking of, the option is in Advanced Config - start up Advanced Config (find and install it if you don't already have it) and go to the Menu > Comm Manager option (right soft-key). Check on 3G in that panel, then restart the phone. Open your comm manager and you'll have an option to turn 3G on or off. As I said, it'll still allow slower internet connections over Edge, and will preserve your battery life.
Firstly, try leaving 3G on, and using your phone like you'd want to. I'm pretty sure your phone won't turn off at all after 1hr. Your battery meter is most probably badly calibrated, which makes your battery display run down fast - only to stay for 3 hours at 20%.
Good lord.. Unless I'm actively transferring lots of data, this is an insane drain rate. Something else is wrong, no question.
On 3G with FlexMail with idle IMAP on two folders and periodic sync on 4 more, I drop 2-3%/hr.
It worked for me

Thank you for this comment. I too was experiencing massive battery drain with 3G/HSDPA on constantly once it became available in my area (just this month - yes I'm in the backwoods). Once I turned it off via the Comm Manager, (I had Advanced Config already installed - great app!) it reverted to Edge, just like it used to, and my battery life has gone back to almost normal. I assume I can go back and turn the 3G on again the same way when I want higher speed access again, right? Thanks for the tip!!

OK I made a service change and now I need help... 3G

Hello all,
I just lifted my data block from my plan and added a data package (using 3g now)
Well here is what I have noticed...
My battery is dying in a hurry, Id say twice as fast. Maybe dead in 12-14 hours in mostly stand by. It used to be more like 24-36 hours.
Anyways, I do not want to loose the data option so here is what I am wondering.
What can I do?
My thoughts are change all email accounts to only check manually? But this still leaves 3g on, likely still draining the battery??
I know I can use the Comm manager to turn off data connection and micro$oft push, but is this the best way?
I have the cab files that create a shortcut to enable/disable BT and wifi.
Is there one for 3g disable enable?
Lastly, am I going about this the best way, if not what is?
Please help and thank you.

Welcome to 3G (and HSDPA is even worse). Seriously though 12 - 14 hrs seems way to short so a little more info about your device and its setup (ROM/Radio/SPL/Battery age any additional software installed etc) would be helpful.
What can I do?

You are right with your ideas of only turning on extra services when needed. Things like Bluetooth, WiFi and even an unused data connection chew through the power so make the most of Comm Manager and manually check your emails unless you want to carry around a spare battery to change over when the other gets low! I have had days when I've gone through nearly 3 batteries in the one working day using a combination of lots of TomTom Navigator use, lots of MP3 playback and much Internet browsing but normally a charge will last over 1 day (certainly if the screen is off most of the time). There have been many threads about poor battery consumption with the Kaiser here so a search should yeild more ideas.
I use AEBPlus for my keyboard shortcut mappings, and it has a shortcut for "toggle network connection". Typically I press once to connect, check my mail or whatever I want to do, then press again to disconnect.
I am not sure if this is completly spot on! But there is a cab called NOGPRS (by modaco) in my cab corner. I think that would provide you whit some help on youre issue. Other than that you might consider giving other radio`s a go.

newbie question about android

i just got my nexus, digged around, updated to cyanogen, rooted.
i have a problem that on my old touch hd i didnt have:
the data connection is always on?? doesnt android know to close it when not in use so it will save battery charge?
thank you
on the nexus one it works a little different, it shows the 3G icon but that does not necessarily mean its doing anything. only when you see the two up/down arrows lighting up and flashing is there 3G data activity going on.
i guessed that, but, it keeps the data connection open? even without transfer it still uses power, doesn't it?
it is always connected in a way, all it does is ping the cell tower every 10 minutes to have an established point on reference. this by its self does not draw to much from the battery as you would expect, only when data is requested does the radio kick in to full power, so no worries that it will drain your battery. The thing that will kill your battery the fastest is that beautiful screen. try to bump it to 60% thats i nice brightness but yet saves on battery. also keep in mind the battery needs to go through 2 or 3 battery charge cycles for you to get the most out of your battery life.
average real world battery life should get you about a day and a half of bettery.

This is how all modern smartphones work nowadays. They all keep the connections "on" 100% of the time.
It's funny because I asked this question a few years ago
The answer I got was that it actually uses MORE battery to turn the connection on and off all the time manually, than to just let it sit idle.
Also, the N1 is useless without a data connection
i see. then ill just let it open and search for an app that will tell me which app uses the most bandwidth. i only found some that tell me the total usage, not by application...

[Q] Max eco settings

Hello.
Just bought my Razr i (4.1.2 stock) and need some info or help please.
I´m "dont talk to me" user, so my phone can happen to be untouched for whole week until somebody calls or messages me. That way I´d like to max out idle battery life.
I think that those questions are more on Android than on phone, but still... Anyway:
I clear my apps in "task manager" everytime, I use GPS/WIFI/DATA only at a time I use the phone and its apps directly, and I have set smart action which disables GPS,Wifi and (background) data once I turn the display off. I have 4% of battery down after night (9h idle) with flight mode, and 70% idle / 30% screen + android in battery status.
Is it enaugh to max out its sleep potential to prolong battery life at idle state, or is there anything else to do?
If it is not naughty, I´d also like to disable some more apps and processes to make it "light walking" machine, but don´t know what is the purpose of those (MotoCare, QuickView, but processes with android icoon are more difficult to recognize and possibly disable).
Can anybody help please?
Thx for possible answers

To completely disable motocare you need root access. However, you can kill it for a couple of days if you clear its data. Vehicle mode usually runs in the background so you might wanna disabe it. Youtube and facebook ALWAYS run in the background, regardless of whether you're even online. I suggest you remove facebook as well if you have it as the newest version takes up almost 40 mb of RAM. You could use the web version which is just the same.
Thank you. Helped a lot!.
Also changed smart actions for Battery Saver at a time when I turn the display off....
Well, waiting after "new stuff at home" goes away, there is chance to get over 10 days of idle. That´s my boy

Thoughts on battery life of push notifications vs frequently opening app to check?

I'll preface this by saying, this is kind of a stupid question, kind of just common sense...
Here is my scenario though:
I have disabled certain apps push notifications for the sake of saving battery and partly for data consumption. Instead i just end up checking the app manually several times a day.
I am wondering if turning my phone on and opening the app may actually be more of a drain on battery and network than just having push notification on, especially if there are no new notifications most of the time i check manually.
I'm thinking there are probably ways to scientifically approach this, by checking the battery or data stats for each scenario (push on/off) but I'm curious if anybody has first hand knowledge already they could share.

For the data consumption part, you can get detailed data on the power issues by using Application Resource Optimizer that AT&T offers (for everyone including non-AT&T users). It gathers detailed data (down to packet sniffs) on how the application makes radio requests and if there are issues with the requests and gives you list of issues, profiling, and power consumption of the app in joules. You can get a copy of their tool at ARO's website.
