Screen Contrast - Can we control it? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I have two Diamonds - one for myself and one for my girlfriend (not one for the finger though!)
I got mine from Expansys and it is a HK grey import.
Hers is from DeviceWire and is a pukka UK device.
Both now run the latest 137.x ROM
On the Expansys device the default Home screen looks fine. The clock and background graphics are sharp and the screen looks 'rich'.
On the new UK device from DevideWire the clock is washed out - The numbers are not all black but are graded slightly white so they look like things are too bright or the contrast is out. Also any grey is washed a very white grey indeed and it doesn't look quite right. I am not sure whether a screenshot is that helpful for people to view but I will put some up in the next 48 hours.
Can anyone else do a comparison?
Is there some way of controlling the contrast on the devices?
All the best,
Sam.

Picture for comparison
All,
I have attached an image of 2 Diamonds.
The one on the left of the picture is the DeviceWire UK PDA and the one of the left is an Expansys HK import.
Has anyone else seen the difference in the display?
Regards,
Sam.

You can only adjust the backlight. (deselect the autmatic backlight adjustment) Maybe this helps?

Oh my word, thats a massive difference, I can see why you're concerned. Just make sure the girlfriend gets the good one or there'll be trouble
Rory

shucks... that is a massive difference... are you sure your backlight settings are the same?? auto backlight on or off??
Maybe HTC used different LCD suppliers for different batches of the product?

thanks for people taking an interest.
The difference has nothing to with backlight settings. it's more a contrast issue.
Everything is far more washed than it shouuld be...as an example in comms manager it is nearly impossible to read greyed out text.
can anyone post a screenshot of a genuine uk device , say from devicewire, for me to compare with?
thanks,
Sam

i saw a gamma correction key into the registry. search it and
try to modify it. dont forget to softreset after changing values.
i hope it works

For PianoSam
Hello,
Try this one :
Flash it with the proper rom and after if its the same result.
Send it for repair its probleme with LCD.
@+++

Again thank you for your interest.
I spent the morning walking through the registry and trying to identify a way of improving the display. I couldn't find one.
I looked at the Gamma setting and reduced it from 1500 to 700 but this made no noticeable difference.
Both devices are running the same ROM the UK devices are running their default 1.37 10th June ROM and the HK devices have been upgraded to the same.
Logically, it must be a screen problem.
I will be calling DeviceWire and asking them to take a look at this asap. Can someone with a UK ROM perhaps post a picture of their home screen so I can compare it with my own?
Thanks,
Sam.

Problems with display? Or normal

Hi guys,
Just bought this wonderfull device but i'm having some question about it. it seems that the right side of the display is less brighter then the left side. I tried a few images but it looks like the lights are just not brighter. I adjust the contrast and on the highest setting the screen seems to be ok .
I have included some pictures, in the last picture it's very noticable. As you can see the left Agenda and the right Contacten, Agenda is really bright Contacten not. What is your idea about it? Do you guys have the same?
See the difference?
The device is brand new 1 day old, can i return it or ask for a new? Thnx for your support...
Many thanks for your feedback!
Nick
Is your backlight on full? If not try it and see if you still have this 'issue'
Try to Change the backround.
looks like a pattern of the backround.
Nadavi
If you just got it today does that mean you applied the screen protector today? Sometimes it takes a bit of use to sit flat on the screen and so could give such an effect.

No didn't applied it yet. Thought I wait so I'm able to return it. I will try a few new patterns. But you don't have this problem?

Whenn having it full it seems to be less. When having it on less you really see the difference.

No, just checked mine. I can't say it's obvious from your pics and unfortunately your last pic seems unavailable. If it is darker over the "Contacten" word then I can't see that this is a wallpaper issue, since that is a toolbar.
Mike
Hi
I thought this for a small while.
Try turning your screen to landscape, has the slight difference down one side changed with rotation?
If so it is probably just the shading applied to some screens by Microsoft, for example the contacts list and email lists have a colour graduation, white on the left and then a slight blue tint towards the right.
Open up pocket Word, this is a completely white screen, no graduation, do you see the problem now?

[Q] the display too yellow: whitebalance?

Hi guys,
I've got two diamonds: one has a bit too yellow display, the other is perfect. The yellow one perhaps might be improved with whitebalancing but cannot find such setting. Checked everywhere - of course the brightness in power settings does not solve the problem. Any idea how to do it?
Thanks in advance

Exchange it for another one if you can. There are some batches of Diamonds with a lower-quality lcd-screen where white isnt white but yellow'ish (so I've read).

I have had 2 diamonds, one was a dia100 (imported to Australia), perfect screen etc, the other a Diam130 Aussie phone that is "off white" on the screen with a distinct yellow glow/strip/cloud across the bottom of the screen, when placed side by side it is like 2 total different screens.
I can live with it but am thinking of return under warranty except I need to revert all back to factory spl/rom etc.
fadge
I have come to believe that ALOT of the diamonds have screen issues.
Either the yellowish tint or the yellow spotitng/clouding.
I have bought 2 so far and they have been both affected the by the yellow spotting.
I'm going to have to learn and live it, because I dont want to go through the warranty in the US - long process.
It's really shameful, and it really takes away from this phone.

Pink Pixels on graphics

Hi Everyone,
I'm very new to the forums - if I am posting in the wrong place, asking an obvious question or doing something wrong - I'm very sorry! I have searched the forums high and low and don't seem to be able to find a solution to my problem.
I have a T-Mobile Vario III / Kaiser / Tytn II. I have recently discovered the world of changing the device's ROM, which I am very much enjoying. You can get the kind of device you want, not what they want to you to have.
I have, however run into a problem. I've noticed on graphics, particularly on photo's I have taken myself and when on the picture capture screen of the camera, pink pixels running through the picture or randomly scattered. Mainly they seem to follow some kind of line, although I'm not sure what they're following. Sometimes it looks like pink snow, settling on the pic.
I thought it may have been an issue with the ROM I had installed, so I gave it a try and changed it. No luck. I've also made a point of installing the recommended Radio's. Although I must confess I might be missing something.
I currently have installed "HTC NATF v4 HTC Manilla Loaded" ROM with the Radio '1.58.2.17 Neon'.
Some help would be greatly appreciated - although it's not affecting the phone's performance it's ruining my pics!
Thanks in advance.
Try removing the back cover of the phone and taking some more pictures. It's possible that there is an issue with the plastic lens cover on the battery cover.
If you still run into problems, then you may have a defective camera.
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.
It's not just my pics it's doing it on. It seems to be all graphics - anything on the screen. For instance, I'm looking at the home screen at the moment, if I look hard at the edges of the 'Home' icon, it has tints of a salmony pink colour! I would say that the pixels are roughly this colour:
It's almost like I don't have the correct drivers installed - does it work like that with these devices?
Thanks again for taking the time to help me!

The flex cable connecting the touchscreen to the systemboard may be loose/failing. From what I've read, the cable isn't that expensive, and is not too difficult to replace.

XPERIA Screen/Backlight Problems

Hey guys and girls,
I got my brand new X1i on an O2 contract today, ordered through the internet.
However, when switching it on, the first thing that stands out is the screen isn't all black. The upper right hand corner fades to like a dull greeny tinge as if its under pressure or something.
After fiddling around with it, it seems to be the backlight as in bright light, the colours all look fine and black is black. This is also the cause if the backlight is put at it's dullest, but it's most noticable when its at it's brightest.
Is this a issue with all Xperias or just mine?
And is this serious and worth contacting O2 about or will it be okay?
BUMP.
Could anyone tell me simply if this is a common problem, if not, I'll ring O2 now.
A quick reply would be nice
I haven't seen it before and I haven't seen it reported before. If you think it looks out of the ordinary, too much to leave it be, you should indeed phone O2.
Cheers, I shall call now
Post a picture so we can compare and lets us know how it turned out, mkay? =]
Heres the best photos I can snap.
The first two don't really show it well, but the third is the best.
Trust me, when you first switch it on and the Sony Ericsson logo appears, the whole screen is black and that corner fades to that dull green colour. It stands out quite a bit, it's also noticable on the Panels screen.
If you have a dark photo showing, it can affect the colours on that too.
For such a pricey phone, I expect it to be flush black across the screen.
(They're big, so I left them as links. I left them big to show the detail)

I just got off the phone to O2, they get the phone from a third-party so I am expecting an email from them. The woman on the other end said, most likely they will swap it for a new handset at the door, or take it for repairs....but it will say in the email.
Ah, classic case of backlight bleeding. Send it back and you'll get a new one.
Well, hopefully, before next week is out I shall. Just waiting for that elusive email, they said I should have received it by Monday.
Thank you for you're help, I appreciate it
There was a thread on this, some have it too.
I have it as well, black light bleeding. I dont really mind it much since I rarely notice it.
Ive decided to leave it alone since my X1 is unlocked and it'd be a massive hassle to send it away to SE.
I'm pretty sure its common. Even high end LCD TVs have the problem sometimes.
I had it on my first x1 (which I dropped and got a new through insurance), and I've also got it on my new x1.
However, I barely notice it, so I'm okay with it
I wouldn't mind so much if it was white but its a green colour, thats more annoying.
It's gonna get sorted anyway, most likely, they'll swap it at the door for a new one.
I was looking for information about the SPB mobile shell and found this thread.
I also have this issue with the top right corner of the screen, especially when I switch the phone on (on the black startup screen with "experia" written in white).
After startup, I don't really notice the issue since this area of the screen is almost never black (except when switching panels and sometimes when watching videos, but it's hardly noticeable). I'm now wondering if I should return it or not, I got the phone on tuesday and already had to do a hard reset (and reinstall everything I had just installed before) because I couldn't send or receive text messages! I really hope this won't get any worse...
(My phone is a french version, and my carrier is SFR)
Ive had the same issue w/ one...i just returned to BestBuy yesterday and now the replacement is also doing this as well...1 day later
Me too, bugging me like crazy, but seems to be quite common.
- Anthony
Mine has it too but its really not a big deal. I've only noticed it on bootup.
Yeah, don't mind it on startup - who watches it start up?
But I notice it when using the camera (in the black border) and
when switching panels, that's where it's annoying.
- Anthony
yeaa, i got the same problem too. Went over to the sony ericsson centre and they don't have a clue what it was. They said they'll look into it, and thats it. No replacement.
Not happy
i live in indonesia by the way..
Mine too has the issue. Both upper corners are bleeding greenish. It's obvious when the screen is black, not only on start-up, all the time. For example, look at it when playing a movie trailer with really black scenes, it's there.
It has to do with the pixels, not the back-lighting, from what I understand of TFT functionality.
Remember the dead pixels issue on TFT screens? Well, the dead pixel means the transistor of at least one color out of the 3 (RGB) is dead, either locked closed or locked open (anyway, not being able to modulate the light intensity of the subpixel color), so the color is either missing or present at a fixed value, the overall color of the pixel not being the required one. In this case is an issue of mismatch of transistor parameters.
The GREEN pixels do not close completely to block the light. Being a progressive issue from one area to another, it's clear that the thin film transistors are progressively mismatched by the process errors. This is process error in the TFT technology (I work in microelectronics). The process masks can get errors (not the case here), or the masks are ok but the etching process is not properly adjusted. In my Xperia the bleeding gets progressive towards the corner, having a starting point like a center from where it spreads. That is because the etching involves chemicals and liquid flow to spread and cleanse those chemicals. My opinion is that the flow in the case of this particular TFT screen model is from the bottom to the upper side, where the upper corners are the bleeding areas for the chemicals and the effectiveness of cleansing is lower, combined with surface tension of the liquids. The transistors get progressively mismatched in parameters (beta factor) and since they all get driven with the same signal, they block the light less than the good ones. Nothing to do about it. Theoretically it might be possible to map out those pixels and provide a corrected voltage for the mismatched transistors (correction table in the GPU DAC ROM), but this is like tooth extraction through the ass hole (or replacing the spark plugs through the exhaust pipe). It's simpler to just get the ****ing screen right. Sorry guys, we are out of luck here. It seems the 800x480 3inch TFT's are not yet top quality, or at least the ones used by SE. I'm really frustrated that the manufacturer used a cheaper screen in a 600-800$ product. This is how a company can loose customers and get the image crumpled.

[Q] htc one screen problem

hi i am in the uk.. on three network. i got my htc one on the 3rd of april, and 4 days later the screen started to flicker? not all the time? but browsing? esp facebook or anything page with white? i guess the white shows up the flicker more? like i say NOT all the time but soo annoying!! not what i expected from a high end phone? Now let me just say i love this phone.. but thought i cant have this.. so i fill out support form for htc and they reply quick advising me it should not do this and to get it changed. i contact three go through the whole call centre thing (like pulling teeth) anyways the upshot was.. three sent me another brand new phone the next day (yesterday) and took back my first one. And guess what? as soon as i switch the phone on, same screen flicker? i treated the first phone like a new born baby didnt drop or bash it 4 days=screen flicker. another new phone as soon as i use it = screen flicker!! i so love this phone but im so gutted!! any suggestions from ANYONE would help.
kind regards

This isn't helpful but you must just be unlucky to have had it happen twice because mine's been perfect and I've not seen anyone else on this forum mention that problem with theirs.
I guess you'll have to get a new one sent out again and hope for the best
Could you make a short video clip to illustrate your problem ?

hi.. to be honest i dont think a video would pick the problem up? you know i could just be being a kill joy? ive watched videos etc and there really isnt a problem with that at all.. in fact the quality of the picture is fab? if i could use an analogy? remember when the volume control on your stereo would get dust in it? and you would have to twiddle the knob to cure it? its a bit like that? like i say it does not do it all the time but i notice it with white in the screen? like facebook google and when i am navigating thru the screens on the phone like settings etc? the white flickers white/slightly darker white? hence my example? now ive changed my text messages colour scheme so that doesnt annoy me now with it.. but obviously as a electronics layman.. i cant help but think if it was a problem with the screen itself, other colours would do the same as they would if there was a loose connestion? and also if it was a power flow problem with the battery? same thing? not just the white on screen? so i can only conclude as a layman again.. that it is some sort of issue with the os? screen refresh rate maybe? i just dont know? and i cant help think stupidly or not that when htc finally get around to an os update to 4.2.2 (or whatever it is) from 4.1.2 the whole thing will be resolved?
Could it be the auto brightness doing its thing? Try turning it off maybe that might solve it.
I might be totally wrong, be great if that fixed it though. Good luck
well well well!!!! And there you have it!! or at least something like that? ive always used the multi widgit for wifi bluetooth brightness etc? so i have brightness preset on that. instead ive gone into display settings, adjusted brightness with slider? no more flicker!! NO MORE FLICKER!! who ever you are!! thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Was this happening when the stock power widget brightness was set to medium?
If so, I have the same flickering ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243483 ), but I've found out that its not the power widgets fault per se, but the the the level that it sets it to. The widget set the brightness to 33%, and that the level which I'm getting flickering at, regardless of if it was set with the power widget or by the slider. The flickering happens on screen with a good amount of white. Google search result webpage is a good test case; it shows the flickering clearly at 33%. It also seems to depend on where the white is on the screen. For example, I can induce flickering at 40% brightness by moving a light colored icon from the bottom of the screen to the top! Moving it back to the bottom causes the flickering to go away. I can also do it by moving around or resizing the Gmail widget. Flickering happens for me to some extent at brightness values between 33 and 45 under certain screen conditions. Above or below these brightness values, the screen is top notch, no endless flickering at all regardless of how much white is on screen. I'm starting to think this has to do with the dynamic contrast feature of the One. It seems as though it falls in an endless loop of trying to change the contrast, as if it cant decide on what to set the contrast to. Or it could be that the dynamic contrast is fighting for a certain brightness value, but the manually set brightness is not allowing it. I might be wrong about this, and it could just be a hardware backlight problem, regardless, I wish HTC had the Sense (ha ha!) to allow us to disable dynamic contrast if we wanted to. I'm pretty sure this is whats causing the issue where people see flickering when the keyboard pops up.
screen issue?
hi..
i had the widget set on the third setting, the fourth being the brightest. i had the same problem with my first phone and thought at the time it may have been a backlight problem? or power flow problem? i sent that phone back and the next phone did the same? after posting on here.. i removed the widget and manually adjusted the brightness. i like the screen quite bright, manual adjustment cleared the problem for me. i gotta say yep the flicker was more visible on screens with alot of white, google, facebook, texts? and way way annoying! i can only suggest you try the same as i did? perhaps it is just a quirk with the htc? or maybe the os? you never know, when the update to keylime or whatever it is called comes out the flicker may go totally?
JUST had this on facebook? hope it helps?
