TF3D: Why so slow? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi!
Don't you think that some TF3D applications are too slow?
I hate to admit that iphone touch-speed is faster when browsing photos with your finger.
Why other third party WM applications, like PocketCM ImageViewer, or S2V, etc... are FASTER than TF3D!
Is it possible to set another default image viewer instead of using the TF3D one?
Thanks!!

The TouchFLO is gesture based, meaning you have to wipe the finger across the screen completely before it would recognise your action as a command to show the next photo. That would give a perception of slowness or sluggishness.

if your on the rom that came with the phone
change it.the standard roms are slow.
updated or cooked roms are much faster.

Touchflo 3D vs SPB Mobile Shell

Hi,
I've read a lot of pros to deactivate TF3D and install Mobile Shell because of the performance, and i was hoping to hear from people theirs pros and cons and i DON'T mean "i like TF3D bla bla" but an explanation too!!
I thinks it's a lot of storage to be used, or can it be installed on the internal memory?!
TF3D lasted about 20 minutes for me, it looks great but didnt really give me what I needed, when I needed it.
I found it dreadfully slow and fairly clumsy ...yes, I know you can tweak it to the N`th degree now, but still seems to be more cosmetic than funtional. Just a thin flash skin over WM6, and it resorts back to WM6 when you have to do more in depth things with the phone.
I guess I was biased towards SPB Mobile Shell though, as I`ve used it on my last 2 phones (Tytn and Tytn II) and love the way it simplifies and speeds up using the phones. It is not just an improvement over the TF3D but also Windows Mobile. Far more user friendly!! (finger friendly)
I have the latest version on my diamond and love the ability to thumb/finger scroll through the options/section just as well as the TF3D, it`s still layed out well, although I don`t like the way they`ve done the frequently used/favourite programs bits... I liked having the start square infact I prefer the layout of the previous version (9 squares rather than the 6 squares and the messy favourites bar at top.)
It doesnt look as lovely and unified as the TF3D but I realise that you can change the theme. It can look a bit garrish with the multicoloured icons .
The now (today) screen is far more useful on SPB as you can add/remove options.. still not as customisable as real today screen (I probably haven`t found all the plugins tho ?)
I would download the trial as see what you think.
I give TF3D a big thumbs down and SPB Mobile Shell a big thumbs up
Hope this all makes some sense / is of some use, as am slightly sloshed *h*i*c* !
Where have you installed the progam files? In the internal storage or RAM (i guess it's called?!))
I installed it on the phone rather than the internal storage, seemed to be plenty of space. Never normally install to the phone area but feel (rightly or wrongly) that it helps running from phone memory ?? Still loads of room and phone flies along. Doesnt seem to as big an issue as it once was.
hi bro,
being an experience user with spb shell, can you kindly share with us with some skins that you are using?
I have the latest version of SPB Shell (though not installed at the moment as just flashed with a new ROM.
I prefer the SPB Shell as it is alot smoother and faster switching between the menus and the main today screen can be configured to give alot more info than the TF3D one.
For those that like to know the weather it gives you a breakdown of what the weather is going to be like at various times of the day rather than just now (I can look out of the window for that) and even the 5 day forecast can be viewed to see the expected weather at various times of the day.
As for skins the default ones that come with it are only different colours but having a choice of colours from scratch is better than the plain TF3D.
SPB Shell is very configurable compaired to TF3D but still not as configurable as some other Today screens unless like th eother poster said it comes in the form of other plugins.
I have it installed to normal phone memory and everythings fine. I haven't tried installing it to the internal memory but figure if I have to reinstall it if I flash a new ROM anyway I may as well make sure that it's cleared for a fresh reinstall.
Deffo one to give a try if you want something other than TF3D - smoother, more configurable, more skin options, ability to add more plugins.
I have to agree that TF3D is not something that is usable. As a matter of fact, I am very close to labeling it as a piece of crap. All the bad points of TF3D has been posted in this forums countless times and I do not want to repeat it. I am sticking with TF3D is because of one reason only. That is because it's the Diamond's identity. If I were to use other today plugins I would not have gotten the Diamond. Diamond and TF3D is like coffee and sugar/milk (depending on how you like it). Without it, the Diamond loses it's identity.
How about battery usage? Any difference there?

I agree with you. But where can TF3d Themes be found?
I have found two .theme files that works and easy to set up. O2 Blue and Orange Lite. But it would be nice to get something like the White Diamond
I think its better explained this way:
SPB can house many more functions. If you need your phones apps the whole day long an need to navigate your small system every minute, TF3D is really not the thing. SPB is very good, and takes care of every single corner on your phone. Highly skinnable, and fast.
I tried it, but you know, it's too much for me.
I like a lot of apps, but I don't use em every day. So I want to fast check Email, SMS, or weather, or make a call. For those basic functions I think TF3D is the best. Just grab phone, Thumb-thingy to the right tab and off you go.
I don't need something TF3D cant do. Well, some minor things, like agenda and tasks, but I guess that'll be fixed in a few weeks
I'll vote for the Shell too: I tried Flo, really tried as it looks so good, but found it was just unworkable!
Shell is clean and simple, and fast. Also, I use a P3600i in some situations (such as when I really want to hear incoming call rings) - using Shell keeps me to a common interface.
These are the setting that I use:
TABS Home TODAY Date
Time SPB Shell
Weather Owner
Dial Tab Messaging
Calendar
Fring
SPB Menu Internet IE/Opera + Favorites
No Data
Fring
Internet Sharing

SPB Backup

I run TLR v3 - clean and stable.
Unrelated to SPB Mobile Shell, my final 'make it perfect' was to get rid of the ring delay by:
Diamond Phonepad skin: HKLM -> Security -> Phone -> Skin -> Enable (set 1 to 0), then reset
It all depends on what you do with your phone. I tried SPB Mobile Shell and it worked nicely. Quite happy with it. It's faster and more user friendly compared to TF3D. The homescreen also looks nice and it has a nice feature where you can move your finger in a downward movement from the taskbar to choose between the 3 pages of the shell. Although the Now screen is not very customizable (maybe it is with correct plugins?), the other page u can change every shortcut to programs and such. It's nice, but I don't tweak my Diamond anymore as I used to. I saw the Orange Theme with TF3D and I liked it alot. The analog clock looks great. If you're new with the Diamond and ur tweaking and changing and everything, I suggest you get SPB Shell (or just disable TF3D). But TF3D still looks better (orange theme that is)..
I just need to find a white .tsk theme for wm6.1.. All I see is grey/red/purple/whatever... Goodluck with this..

What's the fastest auto screen rotation s/w?...

Hey, Everyone,
I'd just like to ask, what auto screen rotation software's got the fastest rotation. Preferably on-par w/ HTC Album and the new Opera v9.7 beta. I've used older ver's of Gyrator, changeScreen v2.78, and currently use, and of these I'm most pleased w/, Gsen v1.8. However, I don't find any of these to be as fast as the "made-for-HTC-G-Sensor" Album and Opera. Perhaps there were settings in the former apps that I'd overlooked. Any help'd be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.
I can't see how to edit the poll, but...
I would like to recommend Zensor 2 v1.0.1. I've been using it ever since I'd discovered it. 'Hope it'll work on the Touch Pro2, too.
not sure about being the 'fastest' but there is a gsensorSDK out there that as far as im aware doesnt require any additional apps to be installed as its like some sort of builtin service ( im not really sure)
either way im not sure if the response time of rotating the screen is dependant on the software - more so the polltime of your gsensor and how long the os takes to rotate the view?

If that's the case, how would I go about getting all programs to rotate as fast as OEMs Opera Mobile and HTC Album? They've always rotated very quickly and fluidly.
I can confirm that the new sensor sdk does work but it messes up the camera functionalities sometimes and you might also have trouble when returning from sleep mode...
An app that I used is gyrator and it was fairly quick but I definitely prefer not to rotate the device every time you move it because t soo annoying...

spb mobile shell 3d - accelerated??

I've been looking for the answer for about an hour. Is there any xperia user out there who managed somehow to find and enable hardware acceleration option in spb mobile shell 3? As we all know this device IS 3D accelerated, but this option is not visible on mine. Any additional drivers required??
shameless bump. <bump> nobody?? I guess I'll have to wait for an update from spb. oh well...
As fas as I know, if 3D acceleration is available in SPB Mobile Shell 3, there will be an option for it in the settings, otherwise the option won't be visible. If that's true, which I doubt, SPB MS3 is not using 3D acceleration on X1.
But it is a fact that this is maybe the fastest shell for X1 of all. Much faster than TF3D and uses much less memory. It is faster than PointUI Home 2 too, but just a little (not as much as compared to TF3D).
In the end I can't tell for sure if 3D acceleration is used in SPB MS3 on X1, but it works extremely fast and smooth. Actually I reverted from itje's Touch-IT 10.4 to R3A stock + MS3.01 for that reason only, it is way faster.
I read in the xda forum that Enable 3D acceleration should be removed in the final version and was present in the leaked one. Many people complain about it, when it's turned on.

Interesting to hear about your comparison between Touch-IT and R3A +MS3.01. I am on R2A + MS3.01 and all I care about is speed and finger friendliness. Would you say that your current setup is the fastest for the phone *as a whole* (for example, opening OPera, starting up the dialer) or just for the shell features? I am quite happy with how fast MS3.01 is for the shell part, but those other things remain quite laggy, and I'm wondering if the chef's optimizations increase the speed of the phone as a whole. I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

I've being using R2A + MS3.01 and R3A+MS3.01 and Itje's Touch-IT 10.31 and 10.4. 10.31 is slow, so I won't talk about it. 10.4 is faster. The problem is with TF3D, not with Itje's rom, which I thing is a good custom ROM. TF3D sometimes lags, which is annoying, and the new menu too, just some times it needs like 2-3 seconds to show up, but usually it's quite fast.
The problem is in the dialer. The TF3D's dialer was very slow in many occasions. That's what made me go back to stock rom. And also the ram usage of TF3D is very big. Like with panel and spb wireless monitor in the startup it gets like 100MB of ram. Ok Xperia has ram, so that is not a problem, but the dialer is. I see the phone wakes up (for there is someone calling me) and in like 4-5 seconds the dialer shows the incoming call. The whole dialer is slow, when it shows up, when it hides after call etc. As a whole, TF3D is considerably slower than MS3, sometimes annoying, but not that bad. It's the dialer that made me switch back to R3A stock.
Finger friendliness: I love the huge menus of TF3D (the menus in all apps are changed with much bigger ones, finger friendly menus), but the lag in TF3D sometimes kill the finger friendliness.
As a shell speed: MS3 is much faster, uses less than half of the memory TF3D uses and it is smoother. And the most important, the stock dialer is way faster and more responsive than TF3D's dialer.
Opening Opera: it's almost the same with r3a and itje's 10.4, maybe itje's roms is a little bit faster in opera load time, but just a little.
R2A - R3A: the only speed gain I saw is the boot time of the device. Anything else looks the same, or the difference is very small to note it.
One thing more: video playback speed - it's all the same: r2a stock, r3a stock, itje's 10.31, 10.4, stock with new ati drivers. The biggest difference I saw is less than 5% increase, if that's a difference at all (talking about coreplayer with qtv + tytnII mode).
One very good thing is that itje's custom roms have lots if internal free memory (due to removed panels and unneeded software I suppose). It's like 250MB free, compared to 140MB with stock rom after flash.
I hope this was helpful for you to decide which shell do you want most.
Super helpful, thanks VERY much.
So it sounds like the chef's mostly modify to speed up TF3d, but not the overall system. If so, I'll stick with MS3.01. I'm also wondering about gtrab's barebones ROM + MS3.01. I might try that in a month when I get my X1 back from repair.
I also went back to SE dialer after using Yota. I had the same lag problems.
Otherwise, sorry for the thread highjack I don't know if MS3.01 uses 3D acceleration. My guess is yes. The graphics are super smooth.
unfortunately Your guess is wrong, unless You have a background picture under carousel menu instead of just plain black. it is kind of a weird thing, as I can run xtract, nfs undercover, some test opengl apps. I think I'll have to register myself on spb forums to ask devs about it. oh well...

TF3D and Mobile Shell

I keep going back and forth between the two on my Imagio, but I think once we get TF3D 2.5 I'll be able to stick with HTC's software. Question is: Will the Imagio handle it well?
BTW thanks for the resource here!
me too, I have been going back in forth between the current touchflo version on the Imagio and SPB Mobile Shell.
Has anyone come up with a tweak yet for touch flo 3d 2.5 for the Imagio.
SPB MS 3.5 for me
I have been playing with TouchFlo since the first version on the HTC Touch and it is just too much work. I downloaded MS3.5 and I couldn't be happier. It takes up fewer resources and the customization is as easy as dragging and dropping. I use the leisure theme with a five panel widget home screen. You can add picture frames as widgets among other cool items. The contact management is integrated with Facebook automatically and the smart dial is awesome. If I decide I want to do custom icons later, I can get as deep into the xml component as I want.

See, now, I get the whole "pretty" thing with this shell, but I found it to be just too confusing because it has a lot of redundancies. On the other hand, TouchFlo by HTC is really powerful, but it needs more "clues" to find all of its functionality. Idunno..I just wish we could get this thing hspl unlocked so that the gurus can start cooking up some new roms..
TF3D does not work for me. I need to quickly check email and delete tehm on the fly and access many parts of the phone. Why cant we load the new Sense UIon the Imagio. MS 3.5 is great but the contacts and dialer are badly broken. I cant search for contacts easily by typing parts of the name (only searches file as field) and from the dialer screen you cannot get into the details of a contact to E.G. select an alternate number to dial.
I have been trying both on my new imagio, and am currently sticking with SPBMS3.5. The main reason is that for some reason, the text messaging interface with TF3D messes up my ability to rotate to landscape when replying to a message. I am not sure why...
I have hard reset, and it works for a short period of time, because it seems to be using the standard Winmo texting interface. After receiving a message from a contact, the interface seems to switch to a custom TF3D version, and I can no longer use the landscape keyboard.
Plus I like that I can have virtually all the things I need on a sweetly configured main screen at one tap.
My two cents...
Gary
The folks over at PPCGeeks have unlocked the Imagio! And there are a number of ROMs already ready for flashing. As for TF3D and Mobile Shell, I have found no issues with TF, and with the new Cookies home tabs, its even easier for me. I tried that mobile shell, and there were too many reduntant applications, and by the time I got what I wanted set up, it was several pages between what I really needed and what I needed to go through. That, and after a couple days, my phone started to really get buggy. I finally gave up and went back to TF.
Now, that was before flashing to an Energy ROM. Things are much better now! Check out PPCGeeks HTC Imagio section, several ROMS there waiting for you!
You know I just saw those this weekend and they look very promising! Especially the MaxManilla on the horizon. I am not sure whether to go with Manilla or Cookies...Any thoughts?
As for the TF3D and texting, I did some googling and found the fix. Sorry, but I can't remember, but I think it was on PPCGeeks. Had to add some manilla reg values and change one other and voila! It works now. Still not sure if I like TF3D better than SPB, but I am giving it a shot. What I do like is that SPB can have multiple weather cities. I don't think that I like the 3D mail reader on either app.
Thanks again for the tips.

Questions and my opinion on the TD2, read

just bought a TD2 yesturday and managed to flash dutty's holy grail r6.
I used to have the xperia and didn't like it. I'm having a similar feeling with the diamond 2; they both looked good on screen. I think its just Windows Mobile thats uncomfortable. Also, capacitive > resistive. The only reason i can remotely even use this phone is because of my fingerNAILS. When you use an iPod touch for over a year, you'll start to notice the difference of responsiveness.
Some questions I have; help is appreciated:
1) Word Mobile can't turn sideways to use the landscape keyboard? Is there a way to be able to make EVERYTHING go landscape (when i tilt the phone), including the homescreens? (xperia was able to when i slide out the keyboard)
2) Why are there those unnecessary up, down, left, right, arrow keys on the keyboard? I never use them and they have become hindrances. When I go on windows live messenger and use the landscape keyboard, I cant see what im typing because the keyboard takes up almost the whole screen.
3) Can i have more then 15 favorite contacts in the contacts grid tab? (i have manila 2.5)
4) Some of my songs are in another language, so their names are in blocks of letters (when i play them in the music player) instead of proper symbols (chinese, etc).
5) Even after upgrading to dutty's rom, the phone still feels sluggish (music player), SLOW, unresponsive at times. None of my above inquiries would be a problem if the phone was super fast; it would compensate for all faults.

1. Download TD2 Tools, there is a G-Config menu that allows you to specify what rotates.
2. We lost navigation keys with the invent of the scroll bar so.... They got to be somewhere. Change your SIP will resolve this. I use Touch Pal.
3. No. 15 Comntracts is all you can load in teh contacts tab, however you can download Max Manila Themes which will give you 20 shortcuts on your home screen that can be assigned to additional contacts.
4. I know Dutty has language support but not sure how that works. Sorry.
5. I have no issues with this ROM other than the WM6.5 SMS slowdown bug.
I assume you have followed protocol and hard reset after flash?
When you first go to Pics or Music tab, it will be slow at first until everything caches.
Hope this helps. Once you check out max Manila Themes you'll be much happier.

Thanks for the reply Bruce
1) I downloaded the TD2 tools, and added pocketword and wordpad to the whitelist in G-sensor. However, it doesnt work after reseting the phone and they disappear on the list when i go back to check. Same issue with "Enable touchflo3D in landscape".
2) is there another way to change the keyboard? one with unnescessary arrow keys (and other keys) and BIGGER qwerty but LESSER space taken up
5) Ahh, i just feel SO frustrated at the unresponsiveness of these phones. Even after upgrading to a nice rom (dutty's) i dont understand why WinMo is so uncomfortable to use.
Its ridiuclous to type with the onscreen keyboard, both portrait and landscape. Has anyone tried the Hero's? because its capacitive, it actually reads my fingers. I have to grow my fingernails to use this phone productively.
I bought this phone to use it's Word capabilities, calendar appointments, and live messenger, not to mention the very important SMS.
but each one of these has their own faults.
word wont rotate, calendar won't either, i cant see what im typing on messenger, and SMS is slow.
Its ABSURD.
Is there a way to delete or change something in the phone that makes the phone go FASTER? or rather the typing on the keyboard
Another ISSUE.....
Why on EARTH can't I play music (TouchFlo's music player) with the screen off (sleep mode)?? Once i press the power to sleep, the music stops.
If you want an good audio player that also allows you to turn off the screen, must you use Nitrogen.
Swype, instead, is a keyboard that has keys sufficiently large and it don't has the arrow keys.

I like the HTC music player, and to not use other ones. Is there anyway to make the music player during sleep mode??
I'm also familiar with that Swype method but I'm really just interested in a normal qwerty keyboard with large, responsive keys that dont take up so much of the screen.
Thanks for the suggestions though
can you guys please help me? im really in the verge of selling this phone (but its hard to sell it)
However, with the stock rom wm 6.5, if you have setted the deactivation of pda after for example 1 minute, after this period the device will sleep and the htc player will continue to work.
For the input, you also can try Resco keyboard or the other lot of keyboards for wm.
The strength of winmo, unlike other operative systems, is that you can always find a solution to everything ...
Some quick comments:
4) If you are looking specifically for Chinese (CHT/CHS) I use a cab file found on XDA... do a quick search for "uhei00m-gray.cab" file and this should help you. Works well for Touch HD Leo ROMs and my wife's TD2's stock 6.5 ROM.
5) I have use dutty's Leo ROM in my Touch HD before, and the sluggish-ness is due to the Leo build (cover-flow). My wife's 6.5 stock rom (without cover flow) works find without any delay/sluggishness. Keep in mind, the Leo ROM was built for HD2 with has 1GHz CPU to handle the intense graphics.
2) Keyboard, I have been using the TD2 & THD keyboard without the need for finger nail. I think just like iPhone, it takes some time to ramp up (2-3 weeks) when I used it for a short-while.
Good luck, and I think the form factor for TD2 is great! (especially for my wife who cannot stand THD size).
