Just received my Kaiser : I hate the keyboard !!!

Hello all,
I finally bought a Kaiser, after thinking a long time about the fact it is not VGA ...
But I am very disapointed by the keyboard. I have very small fingers, but each time I press a key, I have the feeling that I touch the others close to it, and I don't really know if I touched the good one unless I see it on the screen . It is a really bad feeling when I want to type fast.
Also the feeling I have when pressing the keys is bad : sometimes keys seems hard to press, sometimes there is a soft feeling ...
This is really disapointing because the keyboard was for me the main interest of this device. I was the owner of a good old QTEK 9000, and the keyboard of the Kaiser is FAR FAR FAR away from the one of the universal.
Another bad point for the Kaiser : the power on button should stick a little more, or being in another place. Most of the time, when I want to press it, I also push the screen (my finger recover the button but not only !). So everytime I have to look at my Kaiser to press the power on button and to take extreme attention to push the button without pushing the screen ...
What was your feelings when you first discovered the Kaiser keyboard ?
I thought it beat the pants off of my Ipaq 6515. I'm very happy with it.
It doesnt lend itself to typing with fingers... only with thumbs.
As with all qwerty HTC devices, one or two keys were a bit sticky when new - they have settled down now.

As with all things, I'm betting you eventually get used to it and it ends up being less of a problem. Give it some time dude.
dizzy23, actually you've got a real point here.
I've been on an HTC Hermes (badged as Orange SPV M3100 in UK) and I reckon the Kaiser is a little bit of a step back in terms of tactile response.
However the "u" key on my Hermes started to pack in after a few months of texting, so I'm hoping the Kaiser will stand up to better usage
I'm also not keen on the way the Kaiser now opens. They swapped it around from the old Hermes to alledgedly make it easier for right handed people to open. I rekcon they've made a hash of this as 1) it's no easier to open than before and 2) getting to the stylus is now a pain being on the left. The ergonomics are just all wrong people!
Complaining aside, I love this new Kaiser, but you're spot on about the keyboard

Maybe you're right, I should give it some time. But time passes, and I just found a new problem with this keyboard ! (sorry ...).
When I press the spacebar, sometimes I can feel a kind of "double click", just like if I had press it twice (or pressing it along with another key).
I did some tests and could see that this does not happen if I press on the top of the space bar. But if I press on the bottom of it, then I can ear and feel this "double click".
Again, a very bad feeling wich does slow me when I try to type text because everytime I press the space bar I have to verify I only did it once !!!
Finally I found out where does this "double click" come from : in fact, if I press on the right side of the key, I can feel just a single click. Same thing on the left side. But If I put my finger on the middle of it, then I can feel the "double click". So I guess that in fact the space bar's got two switches : one on each side of the bar.
Again for this, I hope time will help me to deal with it !
I agree that the keyboard is a bit flakey. The Hermes keyboard had a much better feel. I find myself accidently typing the same letter several times. And when I first saw it, I thought the silver numeric keys were a good idea, but in practice find it distracting when I want to type the letters. It also visually breaks up the keyboard making L, O and P harder to type.
Oh well, hopefully I'll get used to it.
Sorry folks but i definetely cannot agree with you. Of course the space bar consists of 2 buttons, i realized it the first time i press i. Now i press it only on one side and have no problem at all, even no time to get used to it. The buttons have a VERY good press, are not too stiff and not too soft, just perfect. Don't understand how anyone can prefer the plastic-like Hermes-Keyboard... urgh. The one from the Kaiser feels alot better!

Just try a HTC Universal keyboard, and you will understand ! And here, I am not talking about the size of the keys wich are bigger of course on the Universal and so more comfortable. I can't complain about the Kaiser keyboard size. I am just talking about the feeling you get when you press a key.
From my point of view, the Kaiser's keyboard is really not good for writing long texts very fast. I am a blackberry user, and writing a lot of emails everyday, unfortunatly I will have to go back to my blackberry device now Too bad I already sold my Universal ...
I am also often pressing twice the same key on the Kaiser, and I am not confident in the fact that time will help me in that, as many other users report this problem now ...
I thought it was just me! I upgraded from an 8525. The 8525 keyboard is so much nicer (to me) than the Tilt. Every key has a similar tactile response. The Tilt keyboard ranges from clicky to mushy. I often find myself subconsciously hitting a key twice because I didn't feel a response from the key. I even went back to the store and tried a couple others and they're all the same.
Hopefully, I can get used to it and it won't bother me so much. (It's the only thing about the Tilt that I don't like!)

The problem is that in a store, with the seller close to you, you can't try the device keyboard enough time to see that the problems will remain there even after hours of practice !
At the very first touch, the keyboard seems quite good.
Keyboard on 8525 was much more accurate for me. Feedback was much better.
Thought I would add a little input as a new user. I had every complaint you did but I can honestly say after a week of use I am gettting as fast at typing as I was with my Curve. I definitely gets better.
Only complaint about Tilt right now is what were they thinking when they put the stylus on the bottom of the device. It works great when in the upright position for a righty but when you switch to landscape you have to remove with your left hand and move it to your right. If it was on the same side but on the top of the device it would be ideal.
Other than that this device is amazing!

I feel that the keyboard is one of just a few things that is better than on the Hermes :-( The other good things are proper A2DP support without skipping and the suede-type case. Everything else have been disappointing.
I've just upgraded from the Wizard, in my opinion the button spacing was much better on that than with the Kaiser. I'm sure there were design constraints but there is quite bit of unused space to the left and right which could perhaps have been used to make it a bit more friendly.
Minor quibbles aside, with all these devices, you need to have patience for a few days to get used to them.
I got a Tilt for AT&T's latest batch, and my first feeling was that the keyboard was better than on my Hermes/8525.
I just pulled it out to test again. There is no difference in the tactile response of the keys on mine. They all have the same click to them.
My only complaint is that it is hard to hit the soft keys when the screen it tilted up, but you can usually just push the button on the screen anyway.
I wonder if its possible that I got a newer hardware revision that addressed the "mushy" key problem.
Had me V3 a few hours now and am very happy with it compared to the V2, faster and easier to use. Keyboard is vastly nicer than the V2, however my space key is a little stiff, but I am sure that it will soften over the next few wks of use.
Its kind of like when you get a new laptop, you have loves and hates with them when you get a new one.

GPS in standby mode ?

When I briefly press the side button on the TytnII it turns off the screen. If I have a GPS program running at the time it also disabled the GPS and the GPS logging stops. I want eo be able to have a GPS logging running all the time for geo-caching but the GPS keeps turning off. Is there any way to stop the GPS turning of while the screen is off ?
No, but you can do a different trick. Get AE Button Plus (which allows you to assign hotkeys to the hardware buttons more so than the OS will), and assign a button to first Disable Standby Mode, then another button to turn off the screen. I have the PTT button assigned as a double-click to disable the Standby mode, then a triple-click will turn off the screen. This keeps the unit active and the GPS running, but stops the screen from draining your battery so much and it's not touch sensitive at that point. It works well, though you may consider getting a bluetooth GPS unit if you're doing a lot of geocaching, because a Sirf III GPS chip is much more accurate than what is built into the Kaiser. The GlobalSat BT-338 is what i have, and is apparently one of the better ones.
is there a program out there that will disablle all the hardware buttons except the power button while the screen is off?
Thanks snooginsguy. Your solution sounds like a workable one. What amount of battery life do you find you get when screen is off and standby mode is disabled ?

I was under the impression that Kaiser does have internal Sirf Star III unit?
Not to my knowledge, it has a qualcomm chip (I know, that's the processor too) that is not as good as a Sirf Star III. I may be wrong about that, but pretty sure that's true. Also, @tytn2user, if I turn off my screen as described, I've used it for 5-6 hours running the GPS and GPSTuner together, and still had about half the battery left, so it's not bad.
I have found the built in chipset to be amazing and have had no problems at all..
I have been testing my current BT gps with a nemerix(sp) chipset in it vers the internal one and the internal one is a lot better. Not as good as a SirfIII but still close. Will do for my geotagging needs.
Well S2U2 fixs it all up. No need to aus AEB either.
Unit locks itself, Backlight goes, GPS keeps running. Perfect.

Resuming application with Power On

Probably a simple question but I use a GPS Golf program on my ATT Tilt. Between shots the power goes off on the Tilt and when I turn it back on the the main power button it goes to the home screen instead of resuming the application. It is driving me nuts. I suppose this is how it is supposed to work but is there a way so to have it resume where you left off in an application when you turn on the tilt with the power button?
Thanks
Darin

Try to disable the "Today Timeout" option in the the Today settings!!
Ciao
I have been playing around with the power setting so it doesn't go off so quickly, but there are still times I need it to resume where I left off on the phone when I use the power button. Seems odd that there doesn't seem to be a choice to just resume when powered on and not just go to the home screen... Any other ideas?
If you don't mind sharing...what is the name of this GPS Golf software? Thanks!!
Not at all. It is truly a great application that incorporates keeping score for all players in your group, side bets, GPS and shot tracking. It also has a desktop software to sync with. The name is it is Intelligolf. You can learn all about it at their website at http://intelligolf.com .
What really sold me on the tilt was the GPS. I purchased the Garmin XT software so my Tilt is my Garmin GPS for my car and is also my GPS golf device as well. Intelligolf offers course downloads for free. If the course you play is not listed you have to mark the points yourself which is very easy or you can do it via Googlemaps.
Very cool.
Darin
I was hoping it would give a picture of the hole. We have a golf course here with GPS in the carts, and it gives you pictures of the holes so you know exactly where everything is.
Unfortunately it does not. This one shows you the distance from where you are to all the points marked such as front-middle-back of green, sand traps and other hazards, etc... I at first wanted to see the actual layout of the course as well then saw the cost is very high on those kind of units. You have to purchase the unit and most of them charge to download each course (seems like some were $19.95 per course). Depending on how accurately you have marked the courses you play, it works just as well IMHO. I do love knowing exact yardage and the tilt seems to do this very well and locks in fairly quickly most of the time.

Well, I found a solution to my problem. I have SPB shell 2.0 on my tilt and in it there is an option for when you turn the power on. You can have it open to the now screen or not... I don't think there is an option in the default today screen for this..

What solution do you use to keep the GPS on ?

I use my GPS a lot and I want my GPS to be running in the background while it track logs. I am not the only person who needs the GPS to not go to sleep so there must be someone else who has found a good solution.
First I tried S2U with a option to not go into sleep mode selected. This work well but I have to have S2U launch of a hardware button and also had to slide after waking it up.
Then I started using AE button plus. Set on of my unused side buttons to turn off screen with single press. This was the best solution I found except it has made taking pictures very buggy.
So has anyone found a good solution to keep the GPS on while the screen is off keeping power consumption down ?

GPS on and Power down are contradictory... I measured that the GPS uses 120mA to run.
Anywho, PhoneAlarm will do it for me. I have a GPS Tracking profile (a day and a night one actually) and the phone never turns off when I have it set to those. Gotta be careful with it though, if you forget to disable it you'll find a hot phone with a low battery in your pocket later.
Have you tried to just set the settings to do it? It's not automated, but it's free. There was a thread on a program called BikeMobile which the author describes how to modify the registry to NOT allow the phone to go to sleep when a certain com port is active. I never quite grokked it, but perhaps you will. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387262
Thats going to be a nice and toastie phone all day.
Thanks khaytsus. I will try out PhoneAlarm and see how I go. I found the phone to be drawing only about 45ma when my screen was off. Just trying to find a rom to suit my needs at the moment. When I find one I will start to try to find a solution.
There are many programs like "trackme" which can log GPS and switch off screen for you. There are some standalone programs like "BlackMe" which can switch off just the screen and lock phone for you.
