UK Truck Lorry Sat-Nav - PDA2, XDA IIi, 2020i General

Hi
Has anyone managed to install any decent truck sat nav software on their PDA? (not just alpine but any PDA).
Ive looked at TomTom Truck but not sure if it only works with latest dedicated all-in-ones like go700 etc?
Ive also looked at Truck Navigator 8 but dont have a copy to try it.
Anyone using anything good?
Thanks

TomTom Maps Of Western And Central Europe TRUCK v8.15.2112 Retail is out and about if you look in the right places BUT chances of it working on a PDA is minimal to say the least navcore 7 has only just recently been released to PDA's and I don't think that will run a version 8 map

How good is GPS on XDA IIi compared with external units?

I've just sold my last car which had built-in PCM sat nav. I'd like to get sat nav for my new car but can't decide whether to get a GPS cradle for my XDA, a TomTom 3/5/700 or change the car's head unit for a power-screen DVD sat nav system.
My XDA IIi is relatively stable but it does crash periodically, can be slow to run stuff, sometimes freezes when I'm answering calls and basically seems to struggle with any sort of complex processing. I'm a bit woried that it may therefore be a bit crap at running 3d maps. Has anyone any experience of using these versus built in car systems or the TomTom units?
I've never updated the firmware etc so would also be interested if this improves reliability/speed etc.
Between the TomTom and SatNav head unit is the only real difference the screen size and convenience of not having an external box?
Thanks in advance for any help, Jonathan
I've just got Tom tom for my XdaIIi, with a bluetooth GPS reciver bought on E-bay. I've found it slightly unstable, however my friend with a IIs said it sorted itself out after a short time of using it. I recomend it, however I donot have experience of the other systems, so I would not be able to say which one is better. I personally like having everything in one place.

xda2i and tomtom 6

has anyone bought a copy yet and tried it on the pda yet ,as i have a xda2i and as it not on teh compatable list i'm hesatent to buy a copy as yet ,all i wanna know does it all work ok
thanks
XDA 2i (M1500) + TT6
Andy,
Yup - the two seem fine together.
I've been running TT6 for a week now and all is well - the new maps are excellent.
I wasn't aware that the XDA 2i wasn't on the TT list, but all I can say is so far, so good!
Hope this helps

Isn't your tomtom 6 very slow?
It's terrible on my mda pro!
Regards,
Schmia
Schmia,
TT6 is fine on the 2i running very smoothly, but as with all of the previous versions I have found that it slows dramatically if you have the POIs showing as you drive.
The only POIs have active are Gatzo's etc.
Hope this helps
Snappy
cheers for info ....i might just get it just for the new maps then as i will have no buddies with tt6 so thats a waist and my mate bought his before this buddy stuff was out on the go's
GPS reciever / XDA11i
Hey guys/ gals
Which GPS reciever did you go for ? Im looking at a blue tooth one .
Also , how have you arranged the voice to be loudenough to hear ? plug in loudspeaker ? or combined with GPS ??
Seems like a mine field to me.
Astro1
I bought the TomTom II BT GPS unit. Works very well.
I also have a ARKON powered PDA mount - it has two USB ports to provide power to your PDA and another device, a 5v jack for power to a BT GPS and an audio input to connect your PDA to amplify the sound. It works very well. Sorry can't remember the model number (?CM720). It comes supplied with cables for the audio, GPS power and USB-XDA (you specificy PDA model when ordering). Neat windscreen mount - recommended.
I use the Holux CR-100 GPS cradle which charges my XDA 2i, provides GPS and has a built in speaker which you can connect the 2i to. Only thing is that the phone MUST be in flight mode or the interferance from the radio stack on the speaker is blooming awful.
Other than that highly recommended.
Using TT6 on an Orange M1500, works OK but have an issue with BT headsets dropping out and not able to discover their services again until full reset. I am trying it out again with iGo software to see if the problem is just with TT6, have a Bluenext BT GPS device.
trblay,
I had the same issues with TT6 on the M1500 but managed to solve them by editing the install cab file to omit the BT stack upgrade.
For some reason the M1500 doesn't like anything other than the original stack to be installed.
- works a treat now with the phone talking to my Parrot BT car kit whilst using TT6
The phone POI function in TT6 really is a joy to use... call any destination (usually a Pub) and book a table for lunch... easy!
Hope this helps
Cool Thanks Snappy-xda, bet you know what my next question is going to be how do I edit the install cab file???
Also have you managed to get full 6/7 digit postcodes to work? I can only get the first 3/4 digits to work so gave up and rolled back to TT5....also I have loads of favourites programmed in and no way to transfer them to TT6....
Cheers Again,
Tony.
It works fine, But it has issues with the Bluetooth Driver...
If you have a bluetooth headset, it has problem connecting it after the TT6 install...
It will only work after a hard reset!
@Snappy-xda
Would you please explain how to edit the cab install to omit the bluetooth stack update as this stops my handsfree working after installing Nav 6. I had to revert to Nav 5.
artful
1. download WinCE CAB Manager 2.0.0.13 from here http://downloads.cnet.co.uk/0,39100207,39183699s,00.htm. 15 free use trail but you'll only need to use it once
2. make a backup of the tomtom 6 cab file just in case
3. then open the tomtom 6 cab file in the CAB Manager
4. on the left side panel click on files which displays the files in the cab and the install path of the file etc.
5. then delete from the list ttn6bt2003.dll, BtCoreIf.dll, BtSdkCE30.dll (these are the files i deleted from the cab and seems to work fine, not sure what the heck each does lol)
6. click save and upload the new cab file with the omitted files to you xda and install as per normal.
tested on my xda IIi and my xda II and works fine...
haven't tried too see if i can use the headset and my GPS at the same time yet but i hear you can't since the xda is bluetooth 1.1 or something and you can only use one bluetooth device at a time.
i use a globalsat bt-359, VERY good receiver IMO. i can get a signal inside my house! 7 satellites! and my tomtomGO500 doesn't even get a signal in the house.
@ironfin
Thanks - will try this.
I use a Globalsat BT338 and it's superb. I already had a TTGO700 before I got the XDA IIi so that's the only time I use the handsfree - don't need handsfree and Nav6 to work at the same time as I usually only use Nav6 on the XDA when I'm not in my own car.
Thanks.

@ironfin
Works perfectly now - Thanks.
artful
thanks, works perfect now - i can make calls on my bluetooth parrot carkit while getting navigated by tomtom 6 using my bluetooth gpslim
gps receiver.
Big Thanks....
Thanks ironfin, I will give it a try.
Anyone managed to get 6/7 digit postcodes to work? I can only get TT6 to recognize 3/4 digits.....
Also is there any way to transfer favourites from TT5-TT6, i've had a look on this forum but cannot find anything that helps.
my postcodes work fine. make sure you have the file named 'zip' in the 'Navigator' folder within 'Program Files'
tt6 and xdaIIi with bluetooth headset fix

You are a star mate - my xdaIIi now works with both tt6 and bluetooth headset -- note - i have a tomtom bluetooth gps - tt6 does not see it as a tt6 blutooth gps reciever - so u need to configure ( mine was com 6 ) as other bluetooth devices . and bingo ! - it works -
all cred to ya ...... weby

Would love to buy your old phone

Cheap GPS

I purchased the following unit from Amazon for $17:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E336YK
I had few expectations given the price, but have been quite surprised. The thing paired with my Nook immediately right out of the box. The 'Bluetooth GPS' app (free from the Market) recognized and connected to the device on the first try. It did take about 10 minutes to get a GPS lock the first time I turned it on, but now takes less than two minutes each time I fire it up. Works great with Google Maps (tested with cached map tiles while driving) and Locus Pro (purchased from the Market). There is also no real range problem with the Bluetooth connection - I stuck the receiver on my windshield visor and had the Nook sitting in the passenger seat and maintained the Bluetooth connection.
I have only had it for two days, but am amazed at how well it has worked so far.
Just wanted to throw this out in case anyone is interested in uber-cheap GPS. Amazon seems to be out of these units, but you can find them for a comperable price elsewhere.
Cheers.
Any way to put the Nook Color on the windshield? I am interested in using it as a GPS also.
Seems your post has knocked them out of stock most everywhere, and others are raising their prices. I'd rather just get a Holux for a few dollars more with what they are trying to charge for these things now. I'm still going to just wait until I figure out how to make my WM6.1 phone, or my E71 symbian phone send out a bluetooth GPS signal that my Nook can find.

I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004M8ST36/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img
and
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00161YS8M
The combo works great. I bought some velcro patches that you can stick on things, and so i have the GPS mounted to the back of the holder, with the Nook obviously fitting in the front. This keeps the GPS inches away from the nook (while maintaining a clear sky view), preventing any BT range issues. I use it with CoPilot live, and it works perfectly (oh, and the Bluetooth GPS app from the market).
I will try to get a photo tonight for ya'll...

Goodness your right...price jacked up everywhere. Can't find one for less than about $30 shipped anymore. Bummer. I also tested this with Copilot and it works great. I am most impressed with the Bluetooth range...I can put the receiver just about anywhere and still keep the connection to the nook.
Regarding your WM phone...I have an old WM 6.5 Standard (i.e. non-touchscreen) phone and spent a long time trying to get this to work. I could not find any way to make it fly, but there are some free programs out there for older touchscreen WM phones that will allow GPS data output over BT or Wifi. Getting the nook to connect will be the tricky part. Just look around and you will find what you need to give it a go.

I've been giving it a go, believe me! But your post may have given me a clue... If you couldn't make it work either, I think I may know what the problem is. With my particular phone, I'm only able to output the signal over bluetooth through COM1: Everything else is used up. With the E71 symbian phone, I don't know which COM port is being used. I suspect that the bluetooth GPS software I've been trying on the Nook is only looking at a particular COM: port. If I could figure out how to make it look at some others, I suspect it would start receiving data on one of them.

Thanks, got the mount!
Any recommendations on other bluetooth GPS receivers?

i would give you one million billion pretend dollars if you would explain how you did that. one million billion.
If you have android phone, you can use it as a free Bluetooth GPS
On the phone:
- ShareGPS (for Android 2.2) or
- BlueNMEA (for CM7)
both are free in the Market
On the Nook:
- Bluetooth GPS (free)
Otherwise, you can use TetherGPS over wifi, costed $3 though.

I don't want an android phone until I can buy one of good quality from overseas that ATT can't recognize. There are plenty of cheap android phones out there in china, but they are all terrible quality. Right now my motorola WM6.1 has better voice quality than 99% of phones and that is most important to me.

Nope. With a BT GPS, all you need is one of mnay free BT GPS apps, and you are good to go. In the Development settings, you do have to turn on "mock locations", but that is a one time deal and 5 seconds. One you fire up the app to connect to the receiver, the system receives location information as if the BT was built in.
Just tried it. Here's what I have:
Nook Color with Phiremod 5.3
- installed Bluetooth GPSProvider
Motorola Dext (Cliq), with adxlmod (I think) - Android 2.1
- installed ShareGPS
Everything paired and I got the Nook to display my location correctly. I'm still at work, so not driving anywhere, but will give it a shot later.
I don't have data on my phone, so I might have to get copilot live to actually be useful.
I wouldn't jump on CoPilot Live just yet. I downloaded it yesterday after hearing about several people running it on their Nooks. Apparently the new version has introduced a problem with tablets without an IMEI number. I emailed tech support and they said that they hope to have a fix by early next week. I'd wait until then to download the app. As soon as I receive the update and can confirm that it's working, I will post it, but right now it won't work unless you still have an older version.
Use GPS2Blue or Flash Android!

I successfully used GPS2Blue on my AT&T Tilt (HTC Kaiser) years ago and connected it to a Nokia 770 and a Motion LE1600 Win tablet. I seem to recall that I had to try different COM ports in Tilt/GPS2Blue until it would work. Unfortunately, I now have Android flashed on the Tilt or I would try it for you.
I flashed Android to the SIM-less Tilt just so that I could use it as a remote GPS with my NC!
Good luck!

Limitations on Garmin Street Pilot in WP8

Well,
First of all, I know, there is a threat of Garmin and WP7, but I have to know if actually in Windows phone 8, with nokia 820 there is a way to install custom maps in Street pilot…
I have a Samsung i9300 running a cmd10.1 v4.2.2 and the maps for Uruguay are in img format or nm2.
How there isn´t a navigator for android with support to .img maps; and the nm2 (navitel) is incompatible with Android 4.2.2, because the versions more old since 3.5 (more old supported) and 5.1.2 (the last support for nm2) freeze with Android 4.2.2. and the versions after the Navitel v7 work well but the nm2 files don´t work, is invisible for navigation (Only the maps in nm3 or 7 are supported)… I thincking to sell my phone and by a Nokia 820 or 925 but I have to know if I can put the Maps from Uruguay created by MAPEAR in the windows phone…
There is a way? I can root the Nokia phone and install some explorer to copy the maps???
Thanks for some support here…

Nokia phones have free access to nokia drive, which is probably the best navigation software you can get for free. So far, it hasn't let me down. It even knows all the streets in my village hidden between hills.

Thanks for the answer.
I know how the Nokia drive is good, I always have Nokia phone before the i9300 ...
The only problem that is Uruguay is a small and simple country, all the softwares have maps for others country but for us...and for south america nothing is so good like the MAPEAR maps.
And i always use my phone like a GPS to make maps for all the people who works in the farm...
I use a simples software to make waypoints in gpx format and after it, in home, i open the garmin mapsource in my PC and build new trackz with that points.
With nokia i can transferência that waypoints ?
All that thing that Nokia phones are closed and lock is true ? No file manager ???

I am pretty sure nokia drive has everything you will ever need, regardless of country.
I do not believe you can import the waypoints into it. Even if the file access was exposed, you wouldn't have been able to modify the files yourself, because the app will notice you tampered with the files and will ask for reinstall.
Hummmm...
In really there are many time that I want to by a Nokia phone, I just waiting a phone with a good procesor, 2 g of ram and a SD card slot...
But returning in the threat, I want export the waypoints for my PC and in my computer i'm going to build the maps.
With the garmin mobile xt I can do it, but with Windows 8 I don't know. If I can export the way points I'm happy.

Not a lot of point to 2GB of RAM on WP8; very few apps use even a large portion of the available RAM on 1GB models, and apps are generally not allowed to run in the background.
I'm rapidly becoming disenchanted with Here Drive. It does the job most of the time, but it has some serious flaws too:
Its ETAs are significantly less accurate than the WP7 built-in navigation was. I suspect this is because it's not actually very good at traffic knowledge.
It really isn't very good at traffic. In fact, the built-in Bing Maps app in WP8 is still better about routing around heavy traffic than Here Drive is, even if you launch Here Drive from Bing Maps.
It is absolutely terrible about road closures. I regularly get directed down roads that have been closed for months (which Bing maps knows about, incidentally), or get directed to go the wrong way down a one-way expressway that switches directions every day on a schedule. Bing maps (and WP7) were much better about this. These is *not* some obscure city, either; in fact, I'm less than 20 miles from Microsoft headquarters.
It has once completely frozen my phone (while navigating, when I lost cellular reception in a mountain valley). Tapping the Power button didn't even turn the screen off; I had to hold it down (or pull the battery, which isn't practical on all phone models) and hard-reboot. That shouldn't even be *possible*, of course, so the OS takes some **** for that too...
It doesn't send turn directions over Bluetooth headset profile (only A2DP/"Music" profile) the way that WP7 would.
It doesn't pause music playback when speaking directions the way wp7 would; it just mutes the music temporarily.
If the music is paused, and the phone is on Bluetooth (both music and headset profiles), it will resume music playback after speaking the directions (admittedly, this might be the fault of the Bluetooth in this particular car).
It won't/can't keep the screen turned on when navigating on battery; I get that it drains the battery faster (although the GPS does that quite well already) but I like to be able to see directions at a glance.
It doesn't display the full list of directions once you start navigating (at least, I haven't found a way to make it do so).
It will send you down obscure, tiny, alley-like, residential, or meandering country roads, even if the (slightly longer route on the traffic-free) highway would be much faster, because it doesn't know what the speed limit on those streets is and therefore can't tell that it's substantially slower than taking the slightly longer route (and yes, I have it set to "fastest" not "shortest").
It has no lane assistance at all (neither did WP7, but other apps and devices do, and it would be very handy).

Amazing feedback !!!
I will going to wait for a time before by another phone.
I read in GSM Arena that Nokia is going to Show somethinck big tomorow...
But today i was drive in a small village, in a midle of the farm, and the Navigator with the Open Maps don´t show nothing, horrible.
Uruguay is in the end of the Earth, but with Garmin i can use the .img maps of MAPEAR...
Why Android change all with Android 4.2.2 ??? Only for business, for shure *&¨%&¨&(¨&¨*
Well, thanks for the support !!!
I can confirm, that Here Drive+ (the new name of Nokia Drive Beta) has indeed the option to download maps for Uruguay, the maps themselves are of 47.4 MB size. This is indeed quite small, however I have no idea how big the country is, so it may just be enough.
On the other hand, I disagree with GoodDayToDie on one of his points: I own a bluetooth headset, the Jabra Wave Plus (love this headset), and I can indeed hear both the speed warnings, and the voice directions on the headset.
I'm using an HTC Windows Phone 8x.
Hope I helped.
@TheGoldrocker: Can you also stream music over your headset? If so, the headset supports both "Headset" profile (mono-channel audio + microphone, intended primarily for use with hands-free devices) and at least one of the audio / music profiles like "A2DP" which provide quality stereo sound but no microphone. A single device can, and many will, offer both at the same time. However, many cars still only offer Headset profile, and at least for me, the instructions (and audio warnings) do not play over the headset profile connection. When the phone is connected to a Music profile Bluetooth device (and doesn't have headphones connected), it will send all of its audio (including stuff from apps) over the Bluetooth connection; that isn't anything special that Here Drive is doing.

Well, good thing to know.
I don´t know how big is a Here Drive + file compare to an nm2 (first type of Navitel file), but the complet Map of Uruguay in NM2 has just 30m.
Talking about Uruguay, it is a very small country, i believe it have 20009306 ha. If you take a car at one point of the country and go and make a complete "circle" in it, returning at the first point, the distance will going to be more or less 1800 km...
Well, returning to threat, what type the file works Here Drive + ? It works with .img or gpx ?
Nokia, i believe that in a short time i will turning back to you...

Yes. I just used the TuneIn Radio app to listen to online radio on the headset.
In the Bluetooth settings menu it says:
JABRA WAVE+
connected voice, music

The Nokia maps come from a company called Navteq.
I do not have any info on what extension or what format they're stored in, because WP8 doesn't have a file explorer yet.
However the analysis I can give you is the following: I live in Romania, which is 238,391 square kms, compared to Uruguay's (according to wikipedia) 181,034 square kms, it's 31% bigger.
But if maps also depend on the number of people living there: Romania's population is 20,121,641, compared to Uruguay's 3,286,314 (also wikipedia data) is an increase of 612%.
Knowing, that Romania's road maps weigh 115.8 MBs, I see it quite possible, that 47MB of maps can be enough to cover most, if not all of Uruguay's roads.
The road details are really good here, even most of the unpaved roads are mapped (and we have a LOT of those ), so I hope you get a similarly detailed road experience.
I forgot to mention, that as a non-Nokia phone owner, I had to pay for my Here Drive+, it costed about 33 Euros (44 USD). For Nokia, there are 2 versions of this app available:
Some phones get Here Drive+ (which is the same as the app I'm using) for free
Others only get Here Drive - this app only includes free maps for a single area or country. It can be unlocked to be used in more countries, but it will cost a little. I'd estimate something up to 20 Euros. Someone with more Nokia Lumia experience could help you more here.
I've used them both and I prefer Garman over Nokia drive. Nokia Drive is a basic Navi app, for what it does, for the most part does a great job. It's kind of stripped down as a navi app. I could not find how to show the full directions(I like to take a look how it's routing me before starting through to see if it's a place I want to avoid) or how to turn on POI's (places to eat, gas stations, etc).
Nokia drive is a nice basic navi app that is free but, If you want a full featured one, Garmin offers that and could be better depending on your needs. (too bad it does not support off line maps, but, I have unlimited data it's not a major deal to me)
Does anyone else who has used both agree here or did I miss something on Nokia Drive (I have a Lumia 928 in the US)

I just yesterday wondered the same thing. There was an update for HERE Drive. Its mostly a UI revamp, but it now displays POIs. Also, it seems to have a trail feature, not that anything can be done with it yet. I still can't find full directions either. It seems that Nokia wants people to use HERE Maps for that. Why Nokia insists on having TWO mapping apps, I'll never know!?

I have both of them installed (I own Garmin), and I do a compare on both of them for a bunch of trips now. If you just need to get from Point A to Point B with no frills, Nokia drive is your app but, If you want the extra features that you would get off a full blown Navi system, Garmin is the one for you.
Unless someone can show me How to get the full directions that it will be taking before or during a trip and POI but, I will have to check to see if it's there after the last update..
