Has anyone tried this.
I had a look under the covers of my X1 and under the speaker/aerial (I think this is the aerial as well) is a connector.
Not sure what type it is looks similar to a SMA connector like the ones in WIFI routers.
If we new the type of connector, the mod would not be difficult as no real disassembly of the phone is required.
The lower cover would need a hole in it and a corresponding hole in the speaker mount.
Then plug in the correct coaxial jumper lead.

More range being able to travel to remote areas without as many dropouts.
Better reception when used in a car kit.
Done some testing today.
Connecting and aerial to the terminal under the speaker increased the reception meter from 2 bars to full.
Went for a drive out of town to a dead spot hooked up the external aerial, went from no reception to 1 bar of full reception using a 6db aerial, would be better with a 9db aerial.
If anyone is interested I will post some picks of the mods and cradle I made.
I'm very interested
Please share same pics of your work. Thank you!!

The reason for this mod is I live in a remote area that Telstra Australia is the major player out here.
To get adequate coverage you need their phone with a car kit and external aerial. We travel hundreds of kilometers between towns and mine sites.
The phones on offer are very basic, make a call and that's it.
If you want the MS office features word excel and email then you really need to look at a PDA type phone.
NONE of these have an external aerial. I have searched world wide I cant find one. the only other type on offer are ones that use passive external aerials which don't work.
After some research I found a schematic of the xperia and noted the aerial connector under the speaker. This connection I still have not identified it.
Next day I purchased one to try.
Removing the bottom cover is simple just work your fingernail under it and prize it up.
Then remove 1 screw holding the speaker down. This is not just the speaker but doubles as the aerial.
You will see three sets of terminals, one for the speaker, middle one for the internal aerial. then a round one a aerial connector.
We done some test at a friends communication business, they specialise in communications for remote locations and underground mines.
By connecting the round connector to a small aerial it increased the signal strength by 200%
In a more practical test in standard mode 10km out of town signal was lost. connect the external 9db aerial 130km was achieved.
Now doing this mod a word of warning.
When you make your whole through the black speaker block it has the internal aerial taped to it.
It is hard to see but it is like a foil on the speaker block and can be torn easily and not repaired.
I done it on my first attempt. I Ordered a replacement Speaker box.

Trial using a 2.4g router aerial. Works well in bad areas.
Modified a cheap car cradle with the aerial connector to my 9db high gain car aerial.
The whole in I made in the back of the phone Cover.
The connector under the speaker only one screw to get to this.
I cant work out what type of connector this is.
I used one the same as on WIFI routers I believe they are SMA.
The socket is female and the SMA connector is also female. I use a small gold pin between them both to make contact.
You've bought the X1 twice because you broke it with your first try? Just to see if it works? Man what do you do for a living? Or: How do you live?

hi,
has anyone seen an x1 cradle for sale ?
the only one i've seen so far is this :

anyone seen any others that are actually for sale ?
thanks in advance
Hah, they dare to call that a cradle . The advantage of a cradle for me is not having to fidle with a cable. I had a cradle (without cable) for my Tytn II from the same brand, poor build quality.
If anybody knows of another Xperia cradle I am interested to hear it too.

We ordered from them but than they told they do NOT ship to the US. There are others who ship to the US the same cradle, just go on EBay. Not real nice but nothing else available yet...
when I had my tytn, I made myself a cradle out of Lego.. moved house since and lost it but it worked really well, I built a USB cable into it and held it in the right place with blu-tak, it looked sweet
http://www.expansys.com.hk/p.aspx?i=176116
we ordered two of them and both do NOT work as they should. It charges but it does not synchronizes, it shows short the connection and does not go to the authentication, makes it useless - hopefully SE brings something nicer and better
Hi,
I got one with the spare battery charger slot.
The spare slot failed to charge a battery without using the SE charger.
That said the MobileFun cheap battery is just that.... Cheap!
Lasted 4 hours and was boiling hot after that time. And that was just sitting on the table for 4 hours!!!
Got the genuine SE battery on the way..

X1 Cradle
I couldnt find a landscape one ended up making my own. Fill desired base with Playdough, wiggle phone inside, remove phone, fill hole with plaster of paris and let it set.
Remove mould and Playdough, coat the mould in Vasaline or something plaster wont stick to. Refill the container, this time with more plaster, insert the mould and let dry. When you remove the mould this time your left with a perfect dock. Dremmel through the bottom of the container and stick in a usb cable, I had to gluegun the cable in place, but it works better than those portrait docks and feels better built too.

Man, I was about to say that when I saw it yesterday.
At first I would like to apologize if this topic already is somewhere there. I didn't know how to call thouse pins so I didn't know what to serach for.
When I look at the back side of Leo I can see three unused pins. I remember HTC Himalaya, where thouse pins were for extension pack with VGA OUT, CF slot and next battery.
Review of the cover
Does anyone know what are thouse pins for? CF slot is death but VGA OUT is usefull. Older QC generation was able to VGA OUT so why Snapdragon wouldn't?

So one has to remove the battery cover in order to put the HD2 in the car holder?
Sorry, but this I do not believe it, I have never seen such car holders that demanded removing crucial/standard parts in order for the device to be able to function.... (Apart from a small rubber (dust)cover....)
Please document your findings with a link.
Personally I believe this is more for service/mantenance/diagnosing a broken device by tech support.

believe it, bub. As retarded as it is, HTC has made it that way with the HD2. The car holder will activate the Navpanel (via the 3 pins in the back) while charging the phone at the same time.

So in order to use the car adapter one should everytime remove the battery cover?
That's really retarded : where to leave it while driving? in your pocket is not to comfortable
They should mention that in the specs before one pays around $90 for that piece of cr*p

CAR HOLDER. Not car adapter. HTC made a car holder for the HD2. It has a suction cup stuck to the front windshield. The car holder is there to activate the Navpanel for using GPS program.

The car holder was to ship with a new battery cover which connected to those pins.
Search google for "Official HD2 car holder" then you can see pictures of it, it was actually
a very nice design, not retarded in any way.
Replacement back cover is not so bad
But I still don't know WHY buy expensive original holder with this "speciality" when I can buy 3 dollar holder on eBay with normal attachment...
These pins were for the original HTC car holder which never came to market. Therefore it was necessary to replace the rear cover permanently and stick with it at the car holder.
The now available HTC car holder is using a hughe plastic thing and the HD2 gets connected via Mini USB.
Neverteless, it would be very interest how these pins are usable for personal mods and so on. does anyone knows which functions they provide or how they can be used?
sorry to dig up a massively old subject, but I figured I would jump on the end of this instead of a whole new thread, now that this thread established what the subject matter is.
I want to put an induction coil in my phone (using a plastic back-plate obviously) and I'm wondering if I could feed power into these pins, obviously they were meant for charging so they should accept charge from other things, does anyone know the polarity of the metal tabs so I don't fry my hd2 with trial and error?
davidcampbell, did you try it? Cause i wanna use that two pins for charging and don`t know polarity too...
Seems like i have an answer. We need a block with 3 pins behind a battery cover, where left is minus and right is plus.

Is this confirmed? Have you tried connecting power to the leads? Ive been contemplating turning the phone into a din-mounted stereo when I switch carriers and would like something better than microusb for power.
When powering these leads, can you remove the battery and still run the device? Unlike the microusb...
I,m also intrested in connecting cheap china wireles charging coil to those pins. Also I found out that they are used by Powermat Wireles Charging System for HTC HD2. Here you can see a picture showing this plug. So it seems that pin 1 and 3 is used for charging. But not shure about polarity.

Thanks for the photo's.
It looks like it won't work for me and i think alot of others, you can't mount it for example coming up the side of a center console, judging by the shape of the arm? am i wrong has to be on a horizontal surface or windshield.

As described on their website, the headphone jack is accessible when the Tab is mounted. No audio out built into the mount.
The Tab stays clipped in at each corner. The mount grabs each corner. To insert or remove, you peel back each edge.

The design is a bit restrictive. Currently the arm is best suited for a windshield or dash via the adhesive base plate.
I plan on taking the mounting plate and fabbing my own bracket that will put the Tab in front of the stock head unit. It will have a slide mechanism so that the head unit can still be accessed if necessary.

For your information:
The german version comes without the base plate (got.mine today).
In Norway it comes without baseplate and without audio output !
It won't reach for a good position in my Range Rover with the stupid suction cup so I will have to fabricate some bracket for it instead.
The worst was it came without audio output.
I got both the car holder and HDMI desktop stand today and have ripped both apart.
Hopefully I will have time tomorrow to make some schematics of both.
And come up with a good solution so we can get audio output from the car holder as well.
Hmm, $70, it's a pricey wee beast. Looks like a good quality unit though. What're your overall thoughts of it?
The specs doesn't say anything about coming with an audio output, just that the standard 3.5mm connector is still accessible, are people expecting something more than this? (Bluetooth audio ala the Nexus car dock - which apparently doesn't work very well).

In my mind its too expensive just form a bunch of plastic.
Tought there would be an audio output via properitary connection so you are able to hide the cable and dont have to put on x connections to your tab with the looking of a cheap navi.
Really disappointed with this. The mount is by the way for the prototype SGT with a build in stylus on the right upper corner. They just dont change the layout, in my eyes needless ports that dont belong to such an expensive device. Other brands did a better job. Such as zenus with the leather case, the samsung original is bad build.
Yes, its really overpriced, even if you notice the quality of the mount. I didnt wanna wait for womething cheaper and didnt find any simple and cheap solution for this. And there seems to be noone selling a cable with two "angled" plugs in germany... Because the arm of the mount is very short, i have to use it in landscape-mode (makes no sense for navigation for example). Audio-out via proprietary port would make it perfect, as was mentioned above.
Anyways, in-car use of the tab as a navi and music player is really great. I synchronize my music from my desktop to my tab (fortunately i dont need any software for this), using mortplayer as player in the car. Works great, carmode automatcally deactivates suspension-mode with power plugged in.
So wanted to find a car mount that would work with my nook color now that I have navigation thanks to all the great devs!
Searched amazon for mounts that would work with the galaxy tab and a few other products and found an arkon mount (amazon link)
It is pretty sturdy, holds to the windshield really tight. I have had arkon mounts in the past for things such as my palm and they have great customer service and a good product.
It comes with 6 of the little feet that hold to the edges of the nook. Using all 4 "short" ones, the nook fits but its quite tight and the spring loaded size mechanism is at the total end. Arkon includes two extra feet that have a little bit of an extension on them and these are the ones I used as it is now easier to get the nook out of the mount.
Here are a few pictures of it in my car. Haha yes, I am aiming at my house....

Those sticky pads are not going to hold this much weight for very long. The heat of the summer will slide the glue right off. Had this happen on my Garmin and its alot smaller! I thinking about a flex tripod, modified into a cupholder mount.
I've almost lost a Garmin GPS out the passenger window on a turn one time when the windshield suction cup failed. It went flying across the dash and barely stayed in the car. Be careful...

Ditto. I've had a Garmin and one other suction cup both let go at inopportune times. The was holding a small GPS or phone. I can't imagine it working well with something the size of a NC. But as long as it works for you.
This is my first post and already I see that this has been posted to the forums. But the deed is done so I'd like to share my thoughts anyway. -Unfortunately I just found out that I'm not allowed to link to the pics until post #8 so maybe I'll come back and post them later. Anyway...
I'm in the process of integrating a galaxy tab into my car's dash and needed a way to power it, have usb access, and get audio off simultaneously. The stock RCA adapter doesn't have a charging mechanism or USB. But the dock seems to cover all the bases with charging capability, 30 pin connector, and audio line out (I won't be using the HDMI). I ordered one and promptly cracked it open.
This picture (would) show the top case (if I could post the pic), the guts and the rubber mat that I peeled off the bottom. Much to my surprise it was screwed together with actual screws and just popped right open.
At first I thought the big metal thing was a shield but I think its mainly there as a weight. The weight helps to make the device feel more solid but really its the same plastic you find anywhere.
As for my project, I need to extend the section that connects to the tab. That section is attached with a standard 12 pin ribbon cable that I can easily solder on wires or make an FPC-FPC cable extender if I'm feeling fancy

If anyone needs this, disassembly is very easy. Just peel off the rubber bottom and expose the 4 small phillips screws. Use a knife or very thin flat blade to separate the bottom plate from the cover. There are 2 tabs on each side holding it together. If you force the top outwards on the long side you can disconnect them and start to wiggle it out. Be careful not to damage the connectors since they portrude through the top housing. After that its just some tape on the shield/weight, 3 more screws and you're done!

I'm curious to see how this comes out. Please post pics when you can. I personally don't want to dock it because it means I have to take it out of my case each time and have though about just taking the dock apart so that all I would have to do is plug in the connector and be able to leave it in the case at the same time.
i have a galaxy tab in my car.
The solution for it was the standard samsung car dock, which has input for the included car charger.
The audio is provided via bluetooth to the car through Blackberry Stereo Audio Gateway, meaning that to my AUX in jack in my car i have hooked up this device which is also powerd up via USB and the music from samsung plays through bluetooth to my AUX in.
This was by far the cleanest setup i could do. there are no hanging wires or visible wires involved.
My plan is to take it up a notch. I want to tap in to my car's instrument bus and be able to reset the trip counter/mileage/etc and control the tab with the steering wheel buttons. It'll be a couple months before that happens...
Anyway, I ordered a bunch of stuff from digikey to extend the ribbon cable without having to cut anything.
very interested in this. any progress ?
Another thread resurrection
I note that the PCB has some solder pads on it saying Gnd, Tx and Rx, I don't suppose you (or anyone else) has had a look to see what these are connected to?
I'm just wondering if these are connected to the serial lines as it would be a lot easier to solder to these than the innards of a chopped up cable.
Anyone tried this?
Amazing project!! Great info
