Every once in a while I'm having the same sort of problem whith my storage card, whether it's MiniSD, MicroSD or SDHC. To be more precise some/all files disappear leaving nothing but some bloody FILE*.CHK files, which seem to be completely useless. I did some google-search and there seems to be no practical way of retrieving the lost data.
I'm curious: why is it happening in the first place and has anyone been successful in combatting this issue? (don't tell me about backups )
I have yet to have a problem with the mem card in my Kaiser. it is a 6Gb Sandisk. Do you have an off-brand?
My old HTC Sable had issues like you describe...
arent .chk files left over by scandisk on a windows box?
this could be due to not ejecting the hardware before removing it from the pc!
under what circumstances are you experiencing this
Yes when combatting this issue I find that handguns are useless and shotguns are all the rage. When trying to do the official combat I like to taunt the problem a bit with the pistol (which just makes it mad) and then go all out with the shot gun. It's always good to have someone else at your side with a missle launcher or something, ya know, for the hardcore combat.
.CHK files are recovered file fragments from Scandisk. I would try a low level format of your SD card and then reformat as FAT32 (for the love of ____, do not use NTFS). NTFS is not designed for removable media and will give you nothing but headaches.
How do you low level an SD card. You only really hear about that with SCSI drives now days, Or do you mean a full format?
im not sure that the post that says dont format ur sd card as ntfs is accurate, while it may be true that a windows mobile device will probably not recognise this disc at all, i use an sd card formatted as ntfs in a laptop with no problems!
try hdtune @ www.hdtune.com/ this might be useful!

You can use an SD card reader with a PC and use a program such as Boot/Nuke to do a DoD-certified erase of the contents.

You can format removable media with NTFS, but you need to be extremely careful since NTFS is constantly caching data from the drive. Unless you disable write-back caching or eject the card each time prior to removing it (which cannot be done on a phone), you run a high risk of corrupting the data on it.
The problem with NTFS on removable media seems to be a windows issue. Not sure if that is windows mobile as well but it also seems to be fixed in a service pack. If I were having problems I wouldn't be using something with user rights and permissions on a device that does nothing with that.

It's Sandisk SDHC 4GB
This is why I released my new software SD Sync Any Kaiser users tried it already? Currently only One way Sync (PPC -> Desktop) happens..

Forgot to mention when trying to fix this I used the windows disc-check utility, but initially problem started after I installed one of the games (Tomb Rider I think) and the battery power was down to 2-3% when I turned my Kaiser off. I couldn't access the programm files folder from ppc, and it was empty when I opened it on pc...except there was tombrider.exe left...

Hmmm, interestingly it doesn't display the file system in the properties menu like it would for the hard drives... but I'm pretty sure I didn't format the card...unless was formatted NTFS when first inserted in a device...

Great job that you know all this stuff...must have used it alot coz you sound quite like a specialist
You might have forgotten to mention granades - there are different types of them like smoke granades or even those which can kill (OMG!) someone...that kind of stuff...

If you didn't format it, then it would be FAT32 formatted by default.

You installed the games in the MicroSD, right?
I experienced it twice, sorted out that it happens when I'm using an application that installed in the MicroSD and then turned the device off. The strange thing that it is only occurred when using a large sized and resource extensive application (especially games), it doesn't happen when using light application such as YahooGo!, MapKing, etc. I end up to install all apps in main memory, and lived peacefully (finger crossed)
I hoped someone could explain why this happen, even better cured it

Saving data from *.CHK

Actually you still can save your files, it still there just with mixed up name and extention
1. Sort the file by it's file size, you could get an idea what file it was by it's size
2. Change the file extention according to what you think it supposed to be judging by its size, ie:
small file to *.txt and open it with notepad, read what's in it and change it to what it's supposed to be .pwi, .xls, etc
2 - 6 MB files to *.mp3
etc
I know it's painful especially with my 2GB data, also you cannot saved your application this way, but I saved my most recent and important data this way, for the rest I just have to satisfy with my 1 month old backup
If anyone could suggest better way, pleaseee let me know
Just happen again
[email protected]!!! me and my big mouth... it just happen again this morning, same thing, install app in storage card, device turned off and wham!
But this time I did some googling and found this utility really helpfull
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
Well, anyone could explain what caused it and how to prevent it?
Any information will be appreciated
Thanks

Yes mate! Sounds very much like what happened here - after intstalling Tomb Rider (4-6MB) in the MicroSD I launched it and then soft reset - my program files vanished...And I dont think I could do anything about that, the .CHK files I got after running the checkdisc utility were all the same size - 32kb, something to do with the cluster size I think...
I guess the question of the cause and the way to prevent it remains open...
Bump
No one can help?
Anyone also experienced this problem? Please tell us your experience, who know we could sort out something
Thanks
my G1 is working flawlessly with all the nifty features like apps2sd and compcache enabled. I showed my room mate some of the cool stuff you guys have been working your arses off for and he wanted me to put it on his.
Here's the issue. His SD card reader seems to be dying. We've tried multiple cards to see if it was a cheap card issue or what not. His cards just don't read half the time. We were wondering if it were at all possible to use either the latest cyan mod or something of the like WITHOUT apps2sd and compcache. A simple way to avoid setting up apps2sd would be wonderful.
you could just get rid of the apps2sd partition on the card and the app2sd wont be enabled

That sucks.. (kinda seems pointless to do anything then.)
As he said above. Some rom's will run without a ext partition. CM'S rom's work without a ext partition.
I think all the Hero rom's require three partitions because just the rom it self is huge and will get a low memory warning.
Looks like fat32 for him.
awesome, thanks
today i updated my g1 to cyanogen mod 4.0.1, then i texted for about 2 hours then i went to go text 3 hours later and it told me that my sd card was damaged and it wouldnt let me text, it was workin great all day up until that point, so i put my girlfrends 1 gb sd card in my phone and now its working like its brand new, i havent done anything to damage my sd card, i unmount it before i take it out, i rarely take it out so theres not scratches on it, all i did with my phone was play teeter. didnt mess with the settings or anything, so can some one please help me? if you would like to contact me by email or gtalk my email adress is dglowe[email protected]
also
i forgot to mention that it doesnt work in my g1, my stepdads g1, or my moms blackberry, and when i plugged it into my computer and removable disk e didnt show up... is my sd card totally screwed? i knew i shouldnt have bought an 8gb for 40 bucks
seems like you killed your card. shouldn't effect your texting.
Try reformatting.
O alrite I was startin to git that impression too, I no it shoodnt effect my textin but it seems like that was the only thing making it not work once I took my memory card out of the equation my textin worked agen... I've tried reformatting it But nothing will read it, o well ill jus git a new card thanks

What ways did you try to read it? If you do need to get a new card you can get an 8 gig class 6 on newegg for $14.99.
mine just did this if you have a micro sd reader plug it in grab paragon partition manager server edition full wipe and format
takes about 2 hours of your life buttt its worth it
worked for me after going through the same symptoms

I had a Rogers ROM format my whole SD to ext3. It complete deleted my FAT32 partition. It wouldn't read in Windows, and it wouldn't let me reformat in Linux. But...I was able to format it on the phone in the Settings > SD & Phone Storage > Format SD card.
I came across that issue a while ago,I found this app SDFormatter v2.0,it was the only choice I had although I lost all my data but the card still works great.
Give it a shot, here´s the link.

Ok how do I do that?
I just recently bought a Nexus One, coming from a G2. I just wanted to have a second phone and picked up the nexus. Upon restoring apps from my G2 to the Nexus I was immediately promoted that my memory was full. I currently have about 56MB free on my phone after using APP2SD. I haven't tried the Darktremor A2SD yet because the last pages of the thread are filled with people that seem to be having trouble with it. I just wanted to know how you control the memory issue? Do you partition your sdcard, ext. Or, do you just keep a watchful eye on the apps you have installed?
Thanks for your replies.
Edit: I'm dreading having to update the rom with a full wipe because of the all the work to get the apps back up. I'm on CM7 and want to try sense but I don't want to have to restore some apps, move them over, restore move and move them over.
Moving App2SD only move the apps to the sd card while all other parts associatd with the apps still reside internally such as data. Apps with widgets will not work from sd card (the widget part). DT a2sd work much better and also allow moing the dalvik to sd which can free up a huge amount ot space internally.
Also apps with widgets work just fine when install to the ext section of the sd card.
i use an older version of DT a2sd 2.7.5.2 ( i stayed away from the latest beta as there's too much reported problems). I have no problems what so ever.
Close to 90 users installed apps and over 100mb left.
Is there any fallout to using that?
SD card can't be read in Windows by card reader, when it's partitioned for A2SD. Only in Linux. So if you take the card out of your phone frequently, and don't have Linux - you might not like it. Also, you become more dependent on SD card - if it dies, more of your data dies. Otherwise it's the right thing to do, the only thing that can actually make N1 usable with good amount of apps.
I have a laptop that dual boots into linux, or I can run a virtual PC as well. I NEVER put it in a PC, why would you...
Interesting...

You wouldn't be able to read that partition either by plugging your phone into a Windows PC.

This may help to a certain extent: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877793
I use the program websharing, would that still work? My guess is no.
your only real option is to use DT apps to SD. i too have been to lazy to try it out, but what i've read, its the only real solution. it will use the memory card as full on internal phone memory by tricking the OS. i'll get around to it soon...
I bought a memory card from ebay its transcent sdhc 16 gb class 4.
when i am trying to copy big data to my memory card via data cable my pc hangs and doesnt allow me to do anything and then my cell phone also hangs.

Try to transfer data thoruhg a card reader. Especially if it is a large amount like 3-5g of music. Moving data through the phone is fine in short bursts but I always founf it to be cleaner and faster through a card reader.

Speaking of memory cards, how did you fix your 32gb Woodrube? I have 3 sd cards failing on me and not sure why. They work for a bit then fail again.

Man it sucked big time for so long but I was able to find a corrupted file on there and had to use File Assassin from Malwarebytes.org to delete it. Even then, it didn't want to go. I reformated it full fat and used the "slow" process that filled in 1's and 0's. It happened when I went to CM6.1 the first time.
Think I may have borked it myself during an bad install and then it would never work correctly. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard (I don't like GParted b/c you lose all your data. With MTPW, your FAT data is still there when you want to resize yout ext/swap) to set my partitions and once that was done, I would try to reinstall that same file. Wasn't until I figured out that it was causing so many problems, but it was the only ROM that would boot up. If I used it and then wanted to go to Wanhu or HM's ROMs (this was a few months ago), when I would restore those, it would break the partition and would never boot up. Wouldn't loop in the traditional sense where the animation would run then disappear and the run again, it would just continually run.
Not saying it is CM6 or anything like that, I just think I got a bad download or operator error and a corrupt file hit my card. I just reformatted to full Fat and no partitions and it works fine (for now). It was only the partitions that would not work. I would run MZor sd-ext test and it was horrible with all the errors it showed. I had been deciding to format full fat anyways and stay away from partitioning (I don't and never have used swap), and I have to say I think it is really better that way. I only have about 50+/-apps so my Dalvik isn't even close to filling up and half of them I don't even use.
OK thanks buddy! Looks like thats what I might have to do. So what would be the best method to move Apps over then with just fat32? If you have any advice for me I sure would appreciate it

On my wife's XT, i am just using the native Froyo app2sd (settings>manage apps>select app>move to sd [there is also an app in the market called Move2sd enabler that will move "non-movable" apps to the SD card]). Don't move any widgets to SD card though. On my Vibrant, I have't moved a single one over to the SD yet and have 1.5g left on internal.
FYI if you get an error when downloading an app from the market and it says,
"App not installed
Unknown Error-18"
Don't freak out, it is a known Froyo bug. All you have to do is plug your phone into your computer and look in the .Androidsecure folder (make sure you have show hidden folders checked on your PC) and delete this file.
smdl2tmp1.asec
You can do it through terminal on your phone too but sometimes it repopulates if you do it this way
su
rm mnt/secure/asec/smdl2tmp1.asec
Sorry for the thread hijack but it is kind of a fix for some SD problems.
the original microSD that came with the phone is kinda shady
mine had some problems, had to format it twice to get it working right
a friend of mine even worse, after a few use it died completely
