If you can check file transfer speed (Windows 7 has this, don't remember if it was in Vista too...) Just pop in your microsd into an adapter and connect it to your computer, if it transfers at a constant rate of 6MB/s then its class 6, 4MB/s its class 4, and 2MB/s its class 2... I *think* I'm pretty sure the class # denotes the transfer speed of the card. If not, assume its class 2.
EDIT: NEVERMIND!!! I found the definitive answer. If you look at the card, it will show a number on the front. It is a C surrounding a number. Here's a link with a pic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534461
Just scroll down to the bottom of the first post.

If it don't say anything then it is a class 2.

SD Card

Could anybody tell me, why my new SD Card (Panasonic 2 GB Class 6) is much slower on my Alpine than my old SD Card (Panasonic 2 GB Class 2)? Here are the results from the SK Tools benchmark :
Class 2 Card: Read 6187 kb. Write 636 kb.
Class 6 Card: Read 729 kb. Write 481 kb.
Isn't it funny?
Perhaps I should format the SD Card properly?
Any ideas?
Thank you.
are cards empty when you check write speed?
class tells about writing speed on complitely empty cards
I tried both benchmarks, with the empty and the full card. The class 2 is much faster, especially in the write result. Unfortunally I formatted the new card on my device, with the effect that the card was become more slower. After that I formatted the card on my computer, now it's better, but nevertheless slower than the old one.
maybe it's something wrong with the card
the 2nd one is almost 10 times slower readed :/
did you check speeds on PC?
maybe PPC just can't handle with faster card

Well, that's my question. Where can I get the adequate information? How can I check the speeds?
use this
http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach
Now I've found out that SD/SDHC Memory Card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with the SD Memory Card specification. You need a special formatting program that complies with the SD Memory Card specification.
Because I have a Panasonic card, I took the Panasonic free SW (
link: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html).
The benchmark results are: Nearly 14000 KB/s (read), but still 470 KB/s (write) only.
No idea, how to increase the write performance.

N1 USB Mass Storage Speed

Guys,
Got a pretty important question; Yes, I've searched. Don't flame the n00b
Using the N1 as a mass storage device, how fast is the transfer speed?
and
Does the speed/class of the SD card make a difference?
Cheers,
It is ass fast as memory stick. Yes, class of sd card makes all the difference.
I was kind of looking for speed in MB/sec
We all know memory can sticks vary from 1MB/sec to 20MB/sec
Fastest I've seen my transfer speeds are 5 MB/s
This very thing is a problem i am having with my N1. i have a 4gb class 6 card in it and when i mount the N1 to my PC i get transfer speeds of 500k to 1mb asec, but then when i plug the SD card into a USB reader i will get speeds up around 8mb asec. I have USB debugging enabled and it doesn't help. So right now transfer speeds to be blow big time. Not sure why it is doing this or whats wrong.
Any info on this? My phone tops out at around 3 megs. I hooked up a Moto Droid and it was moving stuff at 12 Megs a sec.
Experiencing same sluggishness w/ class 6 card.
I think transfer speeds from N1 to PC are independent of the SDcard when plugged in through the USB cable (unless it's like a class 2).
The actual cable and the N1 restrict speeds as long as you're acessing the SD via USB. You're getting differing speeds when putting it in an adapter because the adapter has different transfer speeds and doesn't need to go through the N1 to transfer.
You're going to be capped when transferring from N1 to pc via USB.
on average with the stock 4GB card when in the N1 I see around 1.5-3mb a sec... When I plug the card directly in a card reader I get 5-8mb a sec. It's much faster for me to turn the phone off, take out the card and stick it in a card reader if I'm transferring any more than a few hundred MB.
Just wanted to bump this, as I'm using an 8 gig card, and froyo 2.2 now. I'm getting consisten 3.5 MB - 4 MB, where as before I couldn't break 2 megs. Not sure what class the card is.
Thread update: I now have a Desire with 16gb Class2
7-8MB/sec Writing.
Reading is even quicker.
Transferring a 800mb file to N1 in mass storage (sandisk class 6 8gb) I got about 2.5mb/s using original htc data cable
Using a card reader i got 11mb/s

How is the card reader connected to the computer? Does it go into a USB port or is it a flash card reader built into a laptop?
Wow. 11MB/s is really fast - are you sure of that number? Sandisks are known generally overachievers, but Class 6 is only rated at 6MB/s write so if that number is right then - wow.

Those sound like the theoretical class 4 speeds.
I have a class 6 16GB card and even with froyo, I can't break the 2MBps rate (Running win7 x64).
Stock froyo/FRF50 or a custom rom based on it?
I just recently got my first Class 6 SDHC 8GB card expecting it to be a lot faster transferring than my stock Class 2 4GB. It's the same. But, when I put my class 6 into a card reader, it writes at 15mbps or higher. Sucks that we have to turn the phone off to remove the SD card.
Here are my test results (on the phone, not mass storage), hope this helps.
SD Card: 16GB RiData Class 6, from newegg.com

the speed classes [2,4,6] guarantee minimum transfer rates of at least [X]MB/sec
so the speed of X1 itself is not affected but your sd card (why should it, it's got it's own internal memory), but if you have lots of installations on it that the X1 regularly has to access it might have this effect of feeling slow
someone correct me if I'm wrong
my exp showed that the sd interface of win modile can't keep up with the speed of the fastest cards but sdreaders for pc's can
there are benchmark tools like pocketmechanics which let you test the card of the card in the winM device

rooting my SGT can you just please verify my steps

ok i have a verizon SGT I800 with froyo 2.2 im going to use the how to here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812367&page=25
will this be all i need? or do i have to get a memory card first?? also if i plan on adding a memory card after i root it will that be effected??

Ok you don't need a memory card, but having one helps later and there are many types of micro SD cards out there so make sure you get the right one (some ones will not work or very badly on smart devices. My advice for that would be a minimum of a Class 4 (if your in Europe can help you). You can get a great class 4 32 gig for about €60 and you get a free movie to boot >:¬} check out the best price for the SD32GBHC4OPTSON-EF (product code) PNY Micro SD card
regarding routing this has yet to fail with me
SuperOneClick can get it here http://shortfuse.org/?p=13 and make sure before you connect that you have USB debugging selected, then once that's done just click root and few moments later happy days!
Hope this helps
To convert to rfs (a faster file system-format) you will need three gigas free in your external sd card.
If you eventually want to install the overcome gingerbread rom (hopefully they will port it to the verizon tab), and I recommend that path, it will convert to rfs, so you will need the sd card.
Also, it is helpful to have the sd card as you install apps, so you can install them on the card, and store the data they generate. It saves the space on your internal card for the system.
how do i find out what CLASS an SD card is i went to the story and looked at sandisk ones and i didnt see anything that said the type of class it was.
Printed on the sd card will be a number, 2, 4, or 6. If it has no number it is generally class 2. The higher the number the higher the read/write speed - higher number, faster data transfer - better for you....
I haven't seen any class 6 micro sd cards as yet in Australia or in my searches on the net.
Class 4 32Gb sandisk & kingston card works well... Also have a class 4 32Gb adata card. Works well too...

[Q] MicroSD 16GB Class 10 write speed

Ok i finally bought micro sd card for my galaxy s. But a problem came up. When im transfering via USB Cable, transfer rate is barely 4mbit/s and when I put it in SDHC adapter and into my laptop card reader, i got transfer rate of 19mbit/s and read speed of 22mbit/s
My question is, can anyone explain to me why is it so slow over usb cable?
Just to mention, I already tested on mobile with mobile software and i got same results as with SDHC adapter and card reader....
Have you tried to put the USB-mode into Mass Storsge mode. Settings->Wireless and Network ->USB Settings ->Mass storage. This mode will only show the internal memory and the SD Card in Windows explorer. I think it is also much faster.
Yup, i tried only on that way tbh and transfer rate is still max 4mbps, and in sdcard 19.47
Weird thing is that i know that i got original card, its not scam, i ordered it from official supplier in my country...
bump anyone
I'm sure I read on a thread somewhere that the phone can't use the speed of a class
10 card and you don't get any faster speeds than a class 4, would like to know the facts on this

Get a free sdcard tester in the market and test it by yourself. I would be really surprised if a i9000 could do above class 6 even after tweaking readahead and buffers.
I tested it with SD Tools and got these results
Mine is meant to be a class 10, not very good result if it is:
I got this result with a Class 2 SanDisk:
