Windows 7 and the Android SDK - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, what do we know about this situation? Anything that needs to be run differently, or does it even run at all? I'm curious because I just found my data cable and just upgraded to Windows 7

All I can tell you is that adb works, I can't say. Sorry

wired tether issue

I have an old laptop that doesnt have wifi. Got my phone drivers installed. But everytime i try to turn on tethering, i get a popup saying new hardware ,and that it needs drivers.
I dont have adb setup, as it wont work for some reason.
Guess i should speculate what im trying to do. Tether my laptop to my wifi router. Any ideas or pointers would be great.
laptop is a hp running win xp sp2, its a fresh install, so i could update if it might help, but cant do sp3.
Or would a linux system work easier?
Figured it out. XP sucks and doesnt have the RNDIS crap.
Nevermind. got no connection because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.
Im lost now.
Figured out that my problem was Windows SP2.....Go figure.
So I installed ubuntu 9.10. Didnt help anthing. still am not able to connect. Any info would be great, I've read around through all the threads, and am really starting to get confused, as it says everywhere that it should just be plug and play.

SP2 will not work. I've tried for hours but as soon as I installed SP3 on my work WinXP machine it worked flawlessly.
Why can't you install SP3?

I don't use ucraptu -- it is perpetually borked.
Fedora will work -- just about any version since networkmanager went default. I think that was about version 7 or 8, both of which are already obsolete.
Just turn the thing on, plug in the phone, don't forget to ENABLE WIRED TETHERING, and you're done.

Because my Hp laptop doesnt like it, get blue screens too much. I have tried numerous times, From updating to it, and a fresh install of it.
Its just an old laptop, and its HP. Has 1.2 ghz, and 512 RAM, if that makes my point. lol

Em... yep. That's what I mean.
And do yourself a favor: Start with a livecd. It downloads small and is easy to test without jumping through too many hoops.
Appreciate the help. Fedora looks great, and I have nothing to lose. There online d/l sucks, had to find at the bay.
Stupid ubuntu. got a kernal error before the cd could even boot. Gonna be pissed if Im stuck with ubuntu.

well thanks for the pointless addition. Im just trying to find an OS that will work with wired tether, Ubuntu was supposedly plug and play... it wasnt. and now I get kernal errors when trying to load new OS.
Figured out that it had nothing to do with my OS, it was the ROM I was running. Tether works great now.

[Q] USB tethering and Windows 7

Before someone says anything, yes drivers are installed and everything is working on the driver end of things but the problem comes when I plug in my phone and enable the USB tether the network and sharing center in Windows 7 just comes to a complete crawl, also it shows that i have a connection to the internet but i get packet loss.
Anyone else come across this, and any ideas?

Could be that its W7 X64? The drivers are installed and working correctly, what version of W7 you running?
I am also running cm6 final version. Internet works fine about five minute but my phone rebooted. I am wondering if we have similar problems. My wireless mode works fine. However with wifi I seems to run up the temperature of the way up. I worry if my phone can the heat it produce. It constantly stay up at 100 degrees. I need to fix the tethering some how.

Cannot install - says .net framework 3.5 not turned on when it is

running around in circles. Trying to install the chromecast program/app on my laptop. Google provides no forum, no help, no contact us help for this issue. I have framework 3.5.1 turned on, but everytime i try to install it says i need to have it on and then sends me to websites telling me how to turn it on.
Help is appreciated.
What OS are you trying to do this with? Apparently XP is not currently supported and I hear a lot of people are having problems with Vista too.

Windows 7
I'm not sure what the problem is then. That being said, I don't think it is a Chromecast issue because other people would be talking about it. I suspect there is something wrong with your Windows 7 system. I'd even go as far as uninstalling .net and reinstalling it. I suspect that will clear up the issue.

Mounting (MTP) on Linux?

Hey All--
I can't get my moto x to show up as a drive (mounted) on linux.
My nexus 4 was just plug and play on this.
Anyone have a suggestion?
(mint 16, if it matters)
I am not sure what it was called, but when I searched the Ubuntu market, I found one right away...maybe something like qMTP? Seemed to work well.

It seemed that there was a way, but it involved way to many steps than I was willing to take. The MTP app was a lot simpler.
Someone else might have a suggestion though...

I was having trouble with this yesterday (got my phone in yesterday)
It seems as though the device needs to manually be added... its recognized as mtp device but won't mount for some reason....
i plan to play with this this weekend to see if i can get it to work.
in reality the poster that mentioned it would be easier to use the app but thats no fun!
I will report back if i get it to work.
I've had a problem with mtp on my Arch linux system before. Had to add each device manually. But when I plugged in my X it worked without adding anything. Maybe it's getting fixed in the newer kernels?
Anyway, best guide:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mtp
I use gomtpfs, and have got it working on friends machines too.
Now, it just takes a click and it connects.
It is bizarre that both are linux systems
Hope that helps. Good luck.
Thanks. I installed the android sdk and can flash moto x from linux. Also, I get Motorola PCS as a device with lsusb. Not sure if that helps anyone.

Running Ubuntu 13.10 right now on an XPS 12, and I was amazed when the same thing happened to me. I freshly installed Ubuntu, and it just connected out of the box. I recommend seeing if there are any software updates for Mint, that might fix it.
Thanks, unfortunetly it is still not working in Linux Mint 13 LTS even with the latest kernel from the precise repo.
I had lots of trouble until I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10. Now it works great.

So mtp and Moto X for what it is worth if someone might be interested would not work out of the box in Linux Mint 13 or 16 or Kubuntu 13.10 or Debian Wheezy, but it did work on Debian Jessie.

[Q] Not recognizing after installing SDK

Hopefully someone can help me because I have been stuck for days and I have researched nonstop. My phone was working fine and could connect to my pc a week ago. I installed Android SDK and eclipse so I could try and develop an application. Now that I have installed it, my phone will not connect to my PC. My tablet will not either. I have ticked the USB debugging on and off, updating drivers from Motorola as well as the Google usb drivers from the sdk manager. When i type in the command for adb devices, no device is shown. In the device manager, my device does not show up. It doesn't even charge anymore. I have the original cords, but have tried others just in case. I am running Windows 8.0 if that makes a difference.

do you actually need eclipse? did you try uninstalling everything to see if you could connect again?
likely you do not need eclipse and should have just installed the sdk but i have never had the problem you are describing. i would just uninstall everything and get it working again then re-try installing whatever you want to

I may sound stupid because I don't know enough about this.. But don't I need eclipse to make an application? I am going to try to make an application for my class, and thought I needed eclipse and the sdk. I am currently uninstalling it all to see if it helps any.

well there are other IDEs out there besides eclipse but you can use that one. Sounds like you are about to have a pretty big uphill battle creating an app lol.
But if you get everything to work without anything installed, try re downloading and installing everything without your phone plugged into the computer. I have no idea if that would work or if it would matter at all but it could i guess. that's where i would start. it should screw anything up on your computer that wouldn't let you connect your phone but maybe something weird happened.
i just did some research and only found people having similar problems with samsung phones. And the solution was downloading some kies program for samsung phones. so idk what else to tell you.

Ahhhh it worked! My pc will finally recognize my device. I'm not sure what the problem was either, I got the same results when I was researching. No one seemed to have the exact same problem.
I'm definitely going to have some problems trying to create an app haha.. The SDK came with eclipse, so I just assumed I had to use it. I'm pretty sure I'm in over my head! Is there another IDE that you recommend? The easiest method is the method I'm going to take for sure.

eclipse is fine. a lot of people use it. just search through xda and you will find threads teaching you how to build apps, but unless you are going to spend a good amount of time or already know how to code, prepare to be ticked off.

I have 10 weeks left to make it, so I've got plenty of time. I know how to code a little bit, but I'm not very good at it. I'll give eclipse a try and see if it works this time. Thanks for the help!
