firmware updates - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello all
how do you know when a new update is avaible from sony and what changes it does?

download Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) from here and follow the instructions once installed - http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/phones/x1?lc=en&cc=gb
Also sony didnt release any info on what they did literally change but there have been some threads about it.
I do know in R3A they fixed a problem with the Clock and updating the Weather or something.
If you want to know when a new update is coming or what not i'd just check the forums here at XDA - sony hasnt even updated the Xperia page since R2A so they are very unreliable for update news - I even subscribed to the Official Xperia newsletter and never heard anything from them

ive got R3A is that the latest version? i dont wana update it if it is as last time i updated it i had to set the phone up all over again

If you use the updater it will tell you if you have the latest version or not and if you do, it wont do anything (unless you tell it to reinstall anyway).

yes r3a is the latest version and i dont expect a new one for a while

How do I check my current firmware version? And where to check whats the latest? Thanks =)

connect to SEUS via your PC, follow on screen instructions and it will tell you if you have the latest or if there is an update available.
You dont have to update so your X1 will be safe.

Quick question about hard re-sets

Hi all,
I just did a hard re-set on my phone, and it looks like it has cured the problem that i was having.
But my question is...do i have to update the ROM again? Or will it still be the updated version? I have checked and it says 1.93.405.
Thats the latest one right?
Thanks!
no u don't have to update it again...
about your rom being latest, i don't think so.
Is it really not the latest one?
By latest i mean the official one, im still a bit scared to try the cooked stuff!
I'm with you on this one!
... yes, that is the latest one released officially from HTC. Other users in this forum may have newer versions, but like you, I'm keeping to the official version for now. I'm certainly not having any of the issues people are discussing here, which makes me wonder... would they still be having these issues had they not upgraded their device with an unofficial ROM?
A hard reset on a PPC is like using a restore CD\DVD on your desktop computer. It will place the initial software back erasing all data.
So there is no need to update. Also, the latest build or number does not mean it's the best. So if you like your device just leave it as it is.. ..meanwhile read about other users experience about different ROM's this way you stay on the save side
Thanks for the replies.
I am having no problems at all with it now, its running really well, so think i am just going to leave it as it is for the moment!

Help flashing a Prototype X1 please....

Hi guys,
I have in my possession a review sample of the X1i. Seems that the hardware is intact but the software is very old
R1AA013
R13A
Generic_UK
Rom 1.01.931.14
Radio 1.05.25.15
The SE update service says there is no update for the phone, but I know R20A is out and much newer roms are also out.
I have a Touch Pro and have flashed many HTC phones before.
Is it just a matter of Hardspl and then finding a UK rom and radio somewhere.
I have checked the Wiki but there only seems to be one rom there and it does not say what it is. Can anyone please point me in the right direction for an up to date UK rom please. (really liking the panels)
if you hardspl then the seus may work, but theres several roms on this section of the forum that id use instead..
Thanks for the tip, I will try SEUS with Hardspl.
I have been looking at the roms on the forum and they all seem to be hacked with HTC Manila on them. What if I just want the latest SE panels and rom?

Hi, sorry for resurrecting such an old topic, but churchwa did you have any success in flashing your phone? I am in a similar situation and would like not to brick what I got.

I have a prototype X1 too, I have flashed it a dozen times (mostly testing ROMs for the ROM LIBRARY) Zero problems. Advantage: protos are security nlocked
LINK TO THREAD HERE
Really? Thats great. I'm running the same firmware as OP, and while it will make me sad to loose everything to start fresh (just got tomtom working ) maybe I will try this out soon. A performance boost would be nice.
Usually with SE stuff the proto IMEI (004...) throws a serious red flag, among other things. Great to know I can update it. Now if only the hardware were in better shape...
Edit: One last question to gtrab or whoever may help. My main interest would be to load the latest official NAM firmware out there, doing so wouldn't lock it or anything would it? Official as in un-touched, not network (Att or Tmo) related. If I were looking to do something unofficial, what would be the best way to go? Perhaps I should read up a bit first.
But thats when you have normal non-pda se phones,
there os works differently.
You have FW, EEProm, Erom and gdfs (i think)
proto's have normally got brown FW and erom so they need brown loaders instead of red (retail) to get flashed properly.
As this phone works completely different there is (almost) no difference between proto and ratail ones.

Xperia Prototype

Hello!
My proto has only 256 MB RAM, from what ive seen, other version has 384 MB. Is that a problem when trying to appie other rom?
Is it even possible to change ROM in a prototype?
In my previous post i asked for the best ROM for the X1, at this piont i just want to upgrade from R1A to R3A, ive already downloaded the image file. Now i just want to know how to Apply it to the phone. Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance.
X1 has only 256 MB RAM.
Ok, my bad.
Beside that...is there anything i can do?
I also have problems updating my ROM...RUU gives me error code 262.
AS you may notice, im really retarded when it comes to this, but hopefully i will learn sometime.
Sorry for offtop, but subj reminds me a true X1 prototype

How did you get the prototype?
You cant update the firmware of a prototype like a real xperia since it uses another security certificate and therefore not recognized as a real phone.
Only "brown" certificate ROM's can be updated on your X1.
Ask someone that works in SonyEricsson to update it for you.
You might brick the phone if you forse it to update to some custom ROM.

Thanks for the answer.
If i tell you how i got it i would have to kill you
Anyway...according to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-451708.html
A guy called GTRAB says "I have a prototype X1 too, I have flashed it a dozen times (mostly testing ROMs for the ROM LIBRARY) Zero problems. Advantage: protos are security nlocked
"
So im not sure that i would agree with you there, i know that my other protos using symbian or A200 aint flashable.
But since the hardware and the specs in this X1 match the retail version. I dont see any reason why it wont work.
But if anyone who has a prototype and has tried this themself with the X1, feel free to correct me.

You need to do search my friend. Whatever your question is, try to search and you will find the answer.
In your case, if you like to flash your device to windows 6.5, you'll first need to do HardSPL. You can find the "how to" in this thread and this thread.
Then, you can choose and download any ROM you like. There are plenty of choices.
Just follow the instruction to flash the ROM....I think every instruction is clearly enough to understand.
I did search and i downloaded the hardSPL program but I didnt use it because it was going to download an older rom than the one i have right now.
How do you guys know which ROM to use? I just want the latest one.

that's your decision you got a huge variety of ROM in the forum from different chefs... so check out, read and see what is better for you and your phone... GL !
I guess ill do a mini mini mani mo and pick one. thanks!
Oh one more question, so why is the Hard SPL trying to revert my current rom to an old one. Is that what I have to do?

before flash any custom ROM you have to do hard-spl JUST ONCE THOUGH, have fun
hey!
1. you got the latest update for your ROM from SE. that means you are on a "official ROM" or "stock" ROM.
it's suppose to be running on windows mobile 6.1.
2. there is NO "official" 6.5 ROM for the X1 (yet)
3. when you see ROMs saying they are running on 6.5 they are called "custom" ROMs.
custom roms, as the word suggests, are customized by great chefs here on xda to maximize the capabilities of X1 and windows mobile,
that includes the latest updates either from SE or windows (or HTC)
4. there are also 6.1 custom roms
5. the date any custom rom is released suggests it is the latest.
6. there are different "cooks" who may release the same build/update
my suggestion:
try each rom one at a time. sooner or later you'll find one that will suit your taste.
(i think this is the norm here on xda ). and imho, this is how it should be.
if you want the latest agent_47 will not fail you. he's almost always has the latest updates.
if you want a simple & stable rom go for jack's. (with multi-language support)
for pure X1 & wm, look for spikegotti's rom or gtrab's
later you can try itje's, rotastrain's, killer8nl's, etc which are all great.
i hope that clears your confusion. enjoy!
be sure to hard-spl first.
aww you guys are so helpful. thanks im sorry but i will be sending you a PM if i need help. lol

There is a thread for the international version but what you need to do is get an apk that changes your "custom" status to "official" then you will be able check for updates. I do believe this thread will get you started. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383484
If you have deleted any apks then it may mess up any updates you take. Or go to sammobile and look for 4.4 firmware for your phone and use Kies to install.
The 9005 can receive it's latest update thru kies, or by going into the settings menu, tap general tab, and scroll down to about device, then system update.
I have only change the md5 file with kies not the rom....I wanted to make the phone rooted not to change the official rom...can I correct this problem with my updates without change the official rom from my phone??? Or is there any app to do that???

Are you trying to upgrade your firmware on your phone?
Are you trying to change something else on your phone?

I see.
The other reply that I made with the link in it. Follow that link and install what it tells you to install.
After you install it you can make you phone show an "official" status which will allow you to check for updates.
I do not know where the guy in the YouTube video got his firmware.
There is firmware available for the SM-9005 at www.sammobile.com but they seem to be country and carrier specific, I do not know as I do not have that phone.
You may be better off getting instructions in this section of XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3?nocache=1&z=7992070960968063
Good luck and be careful not to brick your phone.

Sir I think you're looking for opinions on what to do and that's not what xda is here for. You're not even in the right sub forum for your device. We can talk forever about the pros and cons of custom roms over official releases. If you're worried one bit about knox counter, then do the official release. If you're comfortable with modifying your device and you can follow directions, I recommend you focus all your attention to this sub forum for your device here! The omegadroid link you attached can be found here on xda! I highly suggest you read through the 3000+ posts that users like you made. That might make up your mind for you.
