FYI The warranty does cover dying touch screens. I've had my g1 for 8 months now, and the screen started going bezerk today, when I flashed CM 3.9 (which absolutely had nothing to do with it). I was just wondering though, do all the black G1's have a PVT board?
every black g1 i have fooled with has had the pvt board but that does not necessarily make it a proven theorem lol. but on an unrelated note. damn cm3.9 is so hot.

Warranty should cover all things hardware related not caused by physical damage (i.e dropping/throwing it on/in concrete/water) and software as long as software is stock
P.S Mine is a PVT board too. I believe DVT's are found on the earliest of early dreams? not sure though)
P.P.S Working my way towards Cyans thread hehe

Sorry but I think your phone is bricked =[ Try calling T-mobile and tell them you dropped your phone and broke it. (You might actually want to do this, lol) They'll send you a replacement if you still have the warranty

thanks you for your rapid ask, but i sure , exist a solution for the brick.
my phoneis not guaranteed because I bought it used
SNIFFF
There's no current solution for a brick. A brick is a brick and you're done. Sorry
I had the same issued as you are having i was also stuck on the t-mobile logo screen because of the radio update, and yes my phone got brick. but since i had insurance on the phone i took it to my local t-mobile made up some excuse that my phone stop working and they gave me a brand new one in store for free. gotta love the extra at 5 dollars you pay for insurance saved me from buying a new one lol.
Yup, you've got a brick. Most common brick actually, downgrading radio 9/10 times seems to leed to a brick. Currently there are no working fixes. There are rumors that either a serial->USB cable might help fix a brick or wiring up a jtag setup. There's info about both on the interwebs but neither has been proven to work on the dream yet afaik.
Here is my question. What were you doing before the brick happened? By chance did you install the special spl?

This is horeible advice you never want to tell them you droped the phone, that's not covered under warranty. Just tell them the phone won't boot. But yeah sound like your phone is fubar.

How is it bad advice? Hardware problems are covered by warranty, software are not. the brick is a SOFTWARE problem. T-Mobile does not give replacement g1s that are screwed up because of something you installed that wasn't issued by T-Mobile themself. If you tell them you dropped it , its a HARDWARE problem and they provide replacements...

Telling them you dropped the phone and it no longer boots is your problem and they will say so. "Was it working before you dropped it?" Yes it was "Then it soulds like when "YOU" dropped the phone you messed it up" Hope you have the phone insurance that's the only way you are most likely going to get a new one but it's going to cost you.
While it's a software problem if you drop the phone and break it they do not have to replace it.

Oh god, fine then. You come up with a better story and post back I don't understand your last sentence...In the official tmobile g1 forums they state that they are not responsible for anything you do software wise to your phone ( root, ROMs, spl, brick, etc..)

simple The OTA got to you for cupcake and you went to install it when the phone rebooted it was stuck at the G1 screen. they will walk you through a few steps and confirm it's messed up. At that point they will send you out a replacement. You do not have to say anything about it being rooted. I just did this for my friends moms phone. He messed it up I called and got her a replacement sent. Now if you are not a T-mo customer you are out of luck though which sucks :/
Hell I had to do this for 2 phones. 1 G1 and 1 Shadow this past week (both phones were modded by me/friend) Shadow was a true hardware issue though and not the mods fault though.
just tell them your phone wont boot up if you cant get to recovery or android screen neither can they on your phone so they will never know what u did to it

Lol okay then. Still think that if you report a hardware issue like you broke it, T-Mobile will still replace it as long as you still have the 1 year warranty that came with it. Like Cyanogen's issue where his touchscreen was messedup. HARDWAREE issue and T-Mobile replaced it

I work for T-mobile and telling them you broke the hardware on the phone is NOT covered under warranty. The manufacture's warranty only covers phone defects not people dropping their phone. A touch screen going out is an example of hardware covered under warranty. Software is covered under warranty as well and all you have to say is the phone won't boot past the G1 screen. Thats all you have to say.
All right. I rest my case then O mighty T-Mobile worker. No sarcasm haha.
Yeah its true, you do have to be careful if you plan on using the warranty route if its not totally legit, but then I suppose it differs depending on region. Over here in the UK it covers quite a few things like accidental dropping of the mobile, water damage etc. Which reminds me, I need to add my mobile to my monthly insurance policy...
The insurance isn't really worth it =/ Even if you claim it you still have to pay 130$ here in NY
Blimey... I pay £6/m (thanks to my credit card policies) instead of the usual £9/m that covers the mobile phone over accidental damage, theft, water damage, software damage etc. However if I do make a claim I think its £30-£40 for a replacement G1.
HELP! Is my g1 bricked?
After reading a few other thread I believe my g1 is bricked.
I was trying to install Superhero G3. After installing the radio provided in this thread:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f56/official-hero-g3-build-rom-18471/
My phone hung at the T-Mobile g1 boot logo.
I can't get into recovery or anything.
I bought the phone from craigslist, so I don't have a warranty or anything. My parents would kill me if they found out I have to buy myself a new phone.
PLEASE I hope there is something I can do to fix this.
So yeah... I dropped my phone and killed my screen and now I'm going to take it to T-Mobile since I bought insurance on my phone to get it replaced What are the chances of them giving me a PVT board vs a DVT?
wasn't it decided that the radio was the only real problem? As in, just flash the radio first and your safe? I have had a good 10 G1's that I have flashed and have never checked to see if they were PVT or DVT. Sorry, I know it doesn't answer your question
I'm not that educated in the motherboards of G1's so if the phone has a DVT board does that mean it has a 32A board or do all G1's have 32B? Lol I run Hero so I don't wanna lose this ability, and I can't live with a rooted G1 if I don't have Cyan's Recovery.
Hmm, me either now that I do some researching. I thought your concern was dealing with the old brick/spl thing...which the radio update before spl fixed. I guess I need to bow out and hope someone more knowledgeable on this subject comes along.

Actually I didn't know the radio before SPL worked on DVT boards. So if I find news that DVT boards are in fact 32B I won't mind at all. Thanks for the good info
..and that is what I am not 100% sure of...please wait for others to verify first! I would hate to feed you the wrong info
Lol it's cool. I'm not heading over to T-Mobile till Sunday anyway
I posted the same question a few days ago, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550502
Somebody said they just got a replacement last week and it's PVT, so looks like yours should be too.
the majority of g1's are pvt. the dvt were earlier model according to the service manual.
i dont remember reading that you could use the new spl on dvt boards. people followed the installation instructions and bricked the DVT devices
i have been flashing roms for awhile now and dont kno wat went wrong with this time, ok here goes, i got a new g1 and downgraded back to cupcake, then i installed the newer radio. everythings fine so far, then i installed the spl and the rebooted, IT HANGS at the g1 screen, they say it should take about 15min, but its been way past that, i cant restart the phone into recovery nor fastboot jus the G1 screen smh, hhhhheeeeeeeelllllpppp
If you can't get into recovery or fastboot, that's usually the sign of a brick
Bow your head and say a prayer, then lay the phone to rest
I'm lost so you have two G1s .who says it is suppose to take 15 min ?who's instructions did you follow?
yes i have 2 g1's, i was following the guides on how to root the g1 and install the hyakuro's special spl, but i guess i didnt check and make sure if the second g1 had the pvt board instead of the dvt board, if bricked i guess ill jus get the tools and swap my old g1 mother board wit the new one, cuz the old one is finished to the fullest cracked screen and all, smh lol

If I recall correctly you must ensure that the device has the 26i radio before installing Haykuro's SPL or that will happen. There are threads dedicated specifically to that problem. I am not sure which ones but do a little looking. Your solution is here, I have seen it.
yea i kno about the threads, but that wasnt the case, it was the fact that i didnt pay attention to wat kind of motherboard i was tryna install it on, i had the 26i radio but not the pvt board, so thats y it was bricked, they're both up for sale right now one with a pvt board, but the antenna is broken
Ive had my Hero 2 months after it was released. As hero users know paint on the front casing chips, so I just "scratched" it away. It also randomly turns off and it freezes up.
2 months after the Evo came out I bought it brand new from craigslist. So i didnt even remember where my hero was, until i found it today.
My question is in the condition that its in, can I still take it to sprint so they can either fix or replace it? and in the picture attached does that red seal indicate water damage?
yes i have sprints insurance and the phone isnt in bad conditions (cosmetic), the evo just takes pretty good pics... lol
thanks in advance.
Doubt it, they rarely fix the casing, unless something else is wrong and swap out the device...
And in that condition, they may pull a "Its due to physical dmg" and won't fix it.

yea sprints warranties are software based maybe if u brick it and say its the battery they might take it back lol.
So yesterday with the heat wave in my city, my phone got really hot to the point of burning my hands almost....
So as soon as I got home i stuck it in the freezer, and left it for about 2 hours.
When I took phone out it was powered off, and when i turned it on it was at this bootloading screen i have never seen before.
I have tried all the options like factory reset, but it just boots me back to main boot menu.

I was searching the web for options as well as chatting with reps from HTC::
1. I could try "How to Unlock the HTC One Bootloader [All Models] " from youtube but from speaking with the rep I was told it would void my warranty which is a huge risk and I dont exactly know what i am doing.
2. I could take it to one local guy who quoted me $20 to flash a rom??? and see if that will fix it
3. I could just wait it out and ship it back to HTC but I will be without a phone for a good solid week......and being without a phone is just horrible in this day and age.

Personally if HTC are prepared to repair it under warranty I would be biting there arm off. If the phone really got that hot you can bet it's done some damage to the internals of the phone, and life expectancy will surely be affected by such extremes of heat
Even if you unlock the bootloader and manage flash a Rom who knows what other problems there may be damage to the memory chip, circuit boards modems, radio and camera. But at that point your warranty is void.
Just send it to HTC for repair that really is your best option.
