Jachero 2.7.3 - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can I install the rom with out paritioning the sdcard [jachero v2.7.3]

Yes but you will have very little room and a very slow ROM

Yes you can run it, but it is recommended to partition to make it run more smoothly. Take a look at this post, question number 5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534461
Good luck

Yup, you can but you'll have about 20mb for apps and it will be dog slow. You can make it faster by installing swapper from the market and enabling a swap file, but a swap partition will give a better performance boost (apparently).

*Solved* JAC's A2SD or JAC's SLOW SD?

I have a rooted G1
& i have jf's 1.5 build with CM's recovery
But the other day out of being scared that i bricked my g1
i flashed to jf but after i thought i "bricked"
i realized that was normal when installing Hero SPL/Radio
So im think of finally flahing to Hero
but theres two options for me
1. flash he spl/radio again then install JAC's Slow SD hero ROm
2. wait till i get paid next week and buy a new 8gb or 16gb
(does the g1 support 16???) then install Jac's Hero Rom but with Apps2SD
oh and if any body out there with JAC's Slow SD rom does it really differ from the A2sd rom(except 4 the obvious)
An does it give you a decent start off of memory like 70mb internal or something
And since i already installed the hero spl/radio do i need to reflash them in order to install the rom
or can i just go ahead and flash the Slow SD rom
And last does Swapper make a difference on the Slow SD Rom
Thanks in advanced
Because i wont beable to read the replies tonight(maybe)

unless you have flashed another spl to your phone you still have the new spl. yes the g1 supports 16gb sdcards. i haven't tried the slow version of hero because i have a class 6 8gb sdcard but you should be able to flash the slow rom just fine. i think it leaves around 30mb of free space but i am not sure and swapper should make it run faster on the slow version set it to 32/30 (swap/swappiness) should give best results. you should invest in a class 6 sdcard though. also if using the swapper app make sure you put the swapfile in /system/sd so it will not corrupt your sdcard when you mount it. if there is anything else i have not covered just ask and i will answer to the best of my ability.
So pretty much since I already flashed the spl/radio from I think it was
Saphire ports or something like I'm able to flash to pretty much any ROM including JAC's Slow SD
With no problems??
And if I flash to JAC's Slow SD ROM today, can I reflash to the A2SD ROM next week when I get a new card
Oh yeah and is there a way to check my spl just to make sure I got the right one?
ohhh and I already know how to check my radio
Go into bootloader (camera+power) SPL:1.33.2005

Well if he goes to JACHero 2.36 he shouldn't use swapper. Just create the linux-swap partition on your sd card and everything is auto from there. You wouldn't want to have the partition and use swapper because that will mess things up. Plus having linux-swap partition compared to swapper makes a huge difference.

Oh and since I will most likely flash to JAC's a2sd rom because I'm going to buy a sdhc card next week

Yep as long as you got the spl and radio you good. You really don't have to have the linux-swap partition but if you do it will pick it up automatically. And it shouldn't take a long time to boot up the first time.
Thanks man I really appreaciate the help
And from everyone els to
Oh and one last ?
Since I'm going to flash to the slow sd rom
When I reflash next week to a2sd jac with my new 4 gig or 8 I'm not sure do I have to prep the card
With the recovery img
Fat32
Ext3 and the linix swap
And it would turn on fine??
Oh and is ext3 a replacement for ext2
So that meaning all my apps on ext3
Music photos etc.. on fat32
And linux swap is what??
I think I'm confused here
I just want to make sure that next week I don't muck up my g1

You won't have to do anything with the recovery img because that is already on your phone. The ext3 is just like the ext2 but suppose to be safer for the card so yes all your apps will be on there and photos, music, videos and everything else on your fat32. The linux-swap is basically like giving your phone more ram. If you need help formating your card I have a tutorial in my sig on how to set everything up.

hero rom is much bigger then the normal G1 rom that is why you are seeing the lag. What is the size of your linux swap and what is your swappiness set to?

well the little room after flash is probably due to the sdcard NOT setup right... I had that build before and the before and so on and the space I had every time was 84mb free after boot and YES the appstosd on this build is automatic. The sdcard should have the fat32 partition first and then the ext2 partition 2nd. To setup the partitions I would NOT use ubuntu .. I ran into mounting issues with gparted .. I have had NO issues with the sdsplit found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3582509&postcount=52
set the 2 partitions first and then setup the linux-swap partition using ubuntu .. I had mine inbetween the fat32 and the ext2 .. and YES you NEED the swap partition in the 2.7.4 build as it no longer uses swapper.

Goodbye to 80% of the members then lol. just keeding. I think people just need to learn how to read the first post of each thread they read. I recommend setting min/max cpu freq to 528, and having linux-swap of 32MB at 20 swappiness. @ demoyo, make sure you have your partitions at the least in this order:
FAT32/EXT3
or if you want a linux-swap:
FAT32/EXT3 (1.5GB or less) /Linux-Swap (32 to 64MB)
The 20MB free internal memory is signaling that your apps to sd isn't working properly, which probably mean you didn't partition your sdcard correctly.

You don't use the Swapper app anymore. As long as you have a linux-swap partition done correctly it is automatic. You can however change the swappiness settings in /system/bin/a2sd (it is the number in echo 30 > ...)

Ideally you need an ext and linux-swap partitions, but if you don't want to for whatever reason you can just install the "Swapper" app from the market. A linux-swap partition is much better but this is the next best thing.

Well said. ANother note is that if you are using the stock 1gb card then you will not notice much speed improvement no matter what you do because of having such a slow SD card. I would not recommend and thing less than a class 4 (Class 6 is the fastest).
If you plan on staying with the stock card you should probably look into another ROM.

Optimizing android performance

Hello, I would like to know what steps that I can take to increase the performance of android on my vogue. I am using myn's warm donut rom, with the system installed on the nand and the data installed on my ext2 partition on my sd card. I have heard that Its a good ideal to enable swapping, but I do not know how to enable it. I already have my 8GB class 6 sd card partitioned with one fat partition, one 256MB ext2 partition, and one 1GB ext2 partition (for Data). If anyone has any suggestions or tips, please let me know. Thanks!
PS: is there a way to overclock my vogue while using android? I have tried using the clock.sh file from mssmison's legendary build, but that didn't work.
EDIT: Can i use an ext3 or ext4 instead of ext2 for the partitions on the sd card?
Soon there will be an app for overclocking. Myn is currently working on it.
Other that that, make sure you're always on the latest nbh and Myn release.
Get yourself a task manager and be mindful of what processes you actually need.
Use clearcache often.
go into dev tools/development settings and set the window and transition animation to OFF. i noticed that not only does everything open super quick but it did increase the overal performance
you can't use ext3 or 4 no. First thing is to make sure if you are running data on your sdcard that you are using a fast sd card (not a cheap one).
That's what is giving you the biggest performance hit right now.
There is an OC app coming but to be honest it really should be running quite snappy for you.
Thanks guys for all of the info. I have just one more question. should I enable swapping on my android? Advanced task manager usually reports that I have around 46-40MB of free ram.
If you have a lot of free memory already, there is no reason to use swap.
Ok, I have one last question (I apologize if I'm being a bit annoying). I tried installing and using Adfree on my vogue, but when I run it, it says "Cannot locate the 'cat' util on your system". Does anyone know how I can fix this? also, when my phone is connected to my charger, my phone's 3g speeds are really good, but when It's not on the charger, the 3g slows down. Normally I'm ok with it, but it may make playing some games online a bit more difficult when off the charger. Is there some way I can fix this? Thanks!

Apps2sd - Will this work

Hey guys,
I found this vid for G1 will this process work for HTC hero if not then how would I go about doing this on the Hero, please help
Not really...
Do you have a rooted phone ? Which rom are you using ?
If your phone is rooted you can try that guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
There is a section for app2sd.
Why isn't it possible to make the official 2.1 rom which is rooted work with app2sd?
I haven't said that.. I just said that this method is not for the Hero...
I don't know for the official 2.1 rom rooted because I don't use it and it may be because app2sd isn't included..
yeah i know, that you didn't said it sorry, didn't wanted to say something wrong. But in every App2sd Tutorial i found so far you have to install the custom firmware to get app2sd... i mean is it something which has to do with the kernel?
Not really sure but see:
Setup Apps2SD
ONLY RECOMMENDED ON CLASS 4+ SD CARDS. Don't bother if you don't know what this is . GIYF.
Do this process after doing everything else! So make sure you have a working custom rom installed which supports Apps2SD. This is designed for VillainROM which doesn't use a swap, if your ROM does support swap ask for a recommended amount. Also note that the ext2 partition will be unreadable from windows or through android os.
1. Backup your SD card to your computer (very important as this process will wipe all the data on it)
2. Restart your phone into recovery mode (Home + Power)
3. Select:
Partition sdcard
Partition SD
Press Home
Swap-size = 0 MB
Ext2-size = 512 MB (recommended)
FAT32-size = Remainder
Press Home
4. Once complete Reboot system now and wait! This can take 20 minutes or so to complete, so just keep waiting!
(Optional - before reboot) - Under partition sdcard you can convert the ext2 partition to ext3 - "SD:ext2 to ext3" - however this isn't recommended as it can apparently wear out your sd card quicker. I believe VillainROM even supports ext4 as well so you can do "SD:ext3 to ext4" after the first one too. Though again this will typically just wear out your SD faster without providing any speed benefits.

You don't need to install anything... App2SD is included in the rom you have dowloaded (if it is included of course)
Which rom do you have ?
2.1 Official HTC Stock rom with root... and no i don't wanna use a custom rom, because im happy with the stock rom
So it should be because the dev didn't include App2SD in the rom :s
Hmm okay im asking now like a noob:
do i need an apk which i install in the hero, so that i can do the adb-commands and get app2sd working?
do i need to switch the kernel, so that i can do the adb-commands and get app2sd working?
are both of the suggestions wrong and i would need something other than that?
My rom is: RoufianosV1.1-Clean - http://hero-roms.blogspot.com/2010/06/roufianosv11-clean.html
so it does have apps2sd included...

Yes you can but it will be useless because 512 Mb of apps is really huge !!
I agree, but the reason why i want to do it is because i only have about 108mb available internal space so i thought if i increase it above 512mb i should get more perhaps?

Low memory with CronMod on CyanogenMod.

I have CyanogenMod 7.2 on my phone with CronMod memory mod. My internal memory shows that I still have 456 MB of space from my 758 MB ext4 partition. Yet phone show info that I have low storage space. Why?
Which script did you use?

That's really weird. It's not supposed to happen. Though I have had some issues like that, it's because you know some parts of the app stay in the internal memory of the phone, they have to be manually moved to the SD over time. Since it's a really small amount of storage that that part of the app takes, it really shouldn't be a problem. But since you have a lot of them installed, you're gonna have to manually move the apps to the SD.
Use Titanium Backup and batch move the heaviest apps you have to the SD and it'll work normally.

I heard that for every use of 500mb of external memory we need 100mb internal memory as it store some files every time we install a app...

Sorry, I'm just having no luck getting the fixed IN2EXT4+ to work on an international galaxy ace. the script creates a file in the init.d folder, as opposed to the unfixed version, but it still doesn't mount or recognise the ext partition on the SD card. I've followed your guides very closely, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...
after each attempt, i start from scratch (clean ROM install), and yet I keep failing ;/
I partition using CWM recovery 5, so does that create an ext4 partition or 3/lower?
Thanks for your time
