official facebook app? - G1 Apps and Games

Hey are they ever going to release an official facebook app for our phones from the website like they do with the iphone and blackberrys?

Interestingly, rumors started flying around the internet yesterday/today about Facebook possibly releasing an official app. I don't make it a habit to post new threads based on rumors, but you can read some info about this here:
http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/2...k-and-google-work-together-on-an-android-app/
http://news.google.com/news/more?pz=1&cf=all&ncl=dZCKUtSuPS9aQTMWoeUeRsnoXR0LM
If the rumors are true, we'll find out shortly.

yea, not supposed to be as "full featured" But i guess rumors are saying as soon as this week

I cant wait.

Well, lets examine the evidence here and see what we can devise:
-Facebook just opened up their mobile shop for TMO users after years of screwing us over.
-TMO has been talking rumors of an official facebook app to be launched alongside the sherpa release when the MT3g comes out.
-The MT3g comes out next week.
So I'd say odds are pretty good.

great analysis haha

Don't want to rain on your party, just spoke to a T-Mobile rep to activate the vv. Asked about the facebook app, mid August was the reply.

mid august is two weeks from now. thats not that long.

it will be out when the mt3g is available

Mid august or a few more days really does not make a big difference. G1 users have been waiting for a good facebook app since we got our phones 9 months ago. its just hope that when it gets here, it'll deliver on what most of us are looking for.

Check this: http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Android
Could be useful for devs?

Have you tried Babbler? The pay version is better, but this one works just fine.
Everything you need but inbox (which, apparently the official one won't support anyways).

well, now we know its coming for sure. all we gotta do is wait.

screens look slick although i had to zoom in.
widget looks cool too.
been using x.facebook.com and holding out for an official facebook app

I am really looking forward to trying this app. I dont even care if its a paid app. I was mega excited when I first tried Babbler and the same with Bloo. This app looks like it will work as expected with likes, replies and what not, I just hope they throw a few 'nice touches' into the app, and include things like photo uploads and tagging.
I must agree the widget does look kinda cool. I just hope it doesnt drain the battery like twidget.
Until then...

Has anyone else seen a problem with bringing up facebook comments through the email alerts if theyre sent to your phone? I click on the links in the email alerts in gmail and it takes me to the person's mobile profile for some reason. It used to take me to the desktop version page so i can see the comments, but its been forwarding to the mobile site

Well it looks like slowly android is coming around. If we get a good facebook app, and turn by turn nav, I might just keep this phone for a while, Yaaa.

I heard somewhere that Garmin was making an Android app, but don't quote me on that
edit: also there is already turn-by-turn nav for the G1. google "telenav". engadget says it is pretty snappy. been around since february.

Garmin making a sat nav would be brilliant! Cannot find telenav on the UK market can someone confirm its there?

This is extremely upsetting, I have attached WifiScan that was said to be free forever
He is charging 2.99 in the market, it may be worth it but I wont support a developer that doesnt keep there word
That's life. $ always wins.
Dunno how old you are, but you remember a certain President saying "No new (or raising existing) taxes". What happened later?. Yeah, raised taxes! yay Just because someone says something doesn't mean they will keep their word.
@OP:
If you have the App already downloaded [i.e. have the .apk file on the phone] you have nothing to worry about.
Which makes me wonder... If you can send someone an .apk file (for instance, an application that is now "paid"), you could give it to them for free, no?
That'd be pretty interesting, considering many of the apps I have are now paid or removed and transfered to paid only.
free -> pay transition
I had all my apps backed up(via astro) on a black g1 I bought on day 1.
I wanted white but but on the first day all they had was black and a few bronze, the wifey wanted 1 in black so I got a white one then swapped my sd card to the white one and downloaded astro to the new phone (after rc33->29 downgrade->JF RC33 upgrade) and installed them all 1 by 1[OT](hey astro dev cant we get a check all on the restore like on the backup)[/OT]
I went to check out the new stuff at the market and all I could see is PRICES, all the good apps got a slight name change and a price tag, how is it protected, my wife would never use most of the geek apps I had on it(i wiped it for her) so would those apps be locked to her imei and I would have to rebuy all the aps I'd want for my white one?
just a tip, to whomever controls this "IF you screw this part up, piracy will be rampant, it has to be fair to the end user and the devs"

Just a question about your screen, sorry to go off topic but what is that icon at the top with the little android guy & the red number?
I beleive that if an app was free, but now dev is charging for it, we should be allowed to share app since it was not cracked if you have original apk. My opinion.

Twidroid. Its a twitter app and is probably the best one you'll find on the market.

I think we should be allowed to share the version before it went premium considering that version was released for free and thus there's no basis for claiming losses with the DMCA regardless of a lack of proper DRM protection.
Honestly stuff like this is making me backup a lot of my apps. I have no problem paying for an app that is worth the money, but when there is little or no changes from the original free version it feels like I'm being back stabbed for my support when I see a $4.99+ price tag on some apps. Its also not helping the situation where Google banned dev phones and anyone not on the T-Mobile network from purchasing premium apps. Between Google and this, some people are just setting themselves up to be targeted by pirates.

A little adb pull/install will allow you to get the "protected" apks and reinstall them when/where ever you want.

Sharing the free apk isn't a problem. The one posted is not the paid apk file -- so this should be fine. The problem is, the free one will most likely not be updated if he introduces new features.
As of now they are the same, other than the "will always be free" has been removed.

I agree. It's totally (term applicable to aad4321 and used in a negative context) that the dev did that. I've noticed quite a few apps that I have in My Downloads that have "updates" that aren't any different except for the name.

Cool! I would love to have that ability since the screen is big enough for multiple apps
This looks very very promising! I love the multi app layout. I hope this comes to the light of day soon!
Like how they call the OS on the Xoom Gingerbread lol. But yeah this looks promising.
http://www.onskreen.com/index.php is the official site for this. At the bottom there is a sign up option to get notified when updates for the product is released such as beta release.
i can see this as being an integral part of the next upcoming android tablets once tgw newness of honeycomb has worn off. The only problem that I can forsee is the need for better processors beyond a dual ccore 1ghz. The heat and battery drain would have to be addressed as well. But all in all, something to look forqard to

I'd kill to be able to just display 2-3 different apps like the above video even if they were just suspended. In fact that might be another option they could implement to save battery life. It would just make switching between certain tasks easier. I'm still trying to find just what my tablet's niche is in my world...this might actually make it replace my laptop for some work related tasks.
any new info on beta or release date?

Here is what I got back from Onskreen ... I asked them about release date and possible beta testing.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for reaching out to us and for your patience. It is indeed Q3, and we are working as fast as we can with the OEM's interested in including Cornerstone with their devices. It's consuming all of our engineering resources to work with them. That is a good thing and a bad thing. The bad because we can't yet support a user beta.
Regarding Honeycomb, we would not legally be allowed to release a Honeycomb beta with Cornerstone. Since the honeycomb source code is closed and owned by Google, for us to include Cornerstone with it and release it to users would be a violation. Any public beta we do would have to be on Gingerbread.
We're paying attention and know you've been reaching out since the start. We definitely have you on the list, and are doing the best we can.
Thanks!
Onskreen Team

Makes sense now the gingerbread references, clearly this requires modifications to the OS and isn't just a launcher, hence them being unable to go directly to users and being unable to release a honeycomb version.

design is perfect
function is always good to kill some minutes
basicly it will show you all pictures that are posted on twitter at the moment.
it does that with sleek animations and you can always digg deeper into the content.
where the picture can be viewed like you would want it on a touchscreen.
one more time i have to say, awesome design!
not like those "i just started programming 99cent apps"
this is really worth checking out, only available via xap sideload...

also dont miss the silverlight webapp over here:

awesome stuff!!!
this is cool! thanks. i dont like twitter but i like this haha
oh good i've found it, thanks! works perffect!
app slowed to a crawl
Have been using this app for around a month now and i must say its great fun, almost hypnotic. However yesterday the picture generation started to run slowly, then crawl, now it takes around 5 mins per line to populate.
So has anyone else experienced this behaviour from the app? does anybody know if the development is still going with the app or if there is a newer version than the one posted here?
FYI i have uninstalled the app and reinstalled to no avail and i have tried to contact the developer via the web page comments section but the Capture window does not work and so i cannot leave a comment.
Any help would be appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Creamy
I can't download the xap file.
There you go:
OK so I have no idea if SmartyPantsCoding is still supporting this, but the app has slowed down because it can't see most of the image URLs on twitter anymore.
Twitter has started shortening ALL URLs on it's service automatically using the t.co service. This means the app cant search the timeline for items with pictures in them (at least not without some re-coding) tho for some unknown reason, tweetphoto links still work. These might be the only links twitter doesn't shorten.
This sucks for us who liked the phone app (and the website imagewind.net) but it means Twitter can now get analytics info, which I gather they have now made available......
nice App
Thanks

Kind Regards,

Anyone happen to have a version 1.2 xap ? Ver 1.1 doesn't work, and 1.3 (above) doesn't support Twitter.
1.2 is supposed to do both Twitter & Flickr. I'm not sure it's past the url issues that broke 1.1, just thought I'd ask if it's out there. Thanks.
EDIT: The above xap does have an option in setting to switch to "unsafe" mode, which pulls pics from Twitter. Works flawlessly. My bad.
thanks, great find!

I fully agree. I really like the Vivid but I feel with out root and s-off Im not using the phone to the fullest. I have 15 days left and if the above is not done by then, Ill be ordering a rocket (which I do not want to do...)
I now have a phone dialog going with ATT Customer Care because of a few tweets.
They implied that they expect me to relay that information back to the community and said they realize by talking to me they are talking to the community as a whole.

the way I see it... a voice is a voice... even an angry voice.
HTC & AT&T need to hear as many voices as possible... go ahead and be angry... let them know...
I and others with direct lines of communication will be calm and reasonable and can point to the angry people... and say "see the natives are restless"
Looks like I should get a twitter account one of these years lol.
They don't give a crap if you contact them in an angry manner. Those of us complaining about this are a minority, most people that buy these phones don't know anything about this stuff. The majority have never heard of rooting, or unlocked bootloaders, or ciq. They may appear to be listening but if they really were action would have been taken already. I'm glad I'm not an overly paranoid person, I'd never be able to use a cellphone after learning about all of this info that is collected every day.

Your post looks exactly like the one I put on the "Why AT&T users should boycott" threadm, I'm glad someone shares my opinion lol. While a boycott does nothing because of us being the minority, spamming their social media can actually do something. The general public does have a Facebook or Twitter, so when they see people complaining every single day about the same stuff on HTC's page, that doesn't look good at all on HTC's part. It raises awareness as opposed to just quietly boycotting a device when we are such a small percentage.

Did we lose Google Now options?

I got a few app updates recently (including the 100GB one drive offer) but I also lost options for Google now that were there before. I can only say "ok Google" from the Google app now.

Yep I can also confirm an update removed the Ok Google commands. I was previously able to use the hot word from my lockscreen and now it only works within the Google search app. Pretty ****ing disappointing, I truly miss the Ok Google commands of the Nexus 6.
I still have them on my AT&T GS6. All up to date so far and everything working fine.
Just bought one of these to compliment my Nexus.
Definitely missing and definitely disappointing.
This is really weird...I guess I'll keep monitoring the app updates. Super strange.

I can all but guarantee it was a server side tweak and was done on purpose. Why?
My theory? Microsoft and Cyanogen got into bed together to replace core Google apps on upcoming phones. This phone comes with a OneDrive promotion. This is them fighting back.

My first blame went to Samsung. Thought, "Oh here goes Sammy trying to make us use the crappy S Voice that NEVER wakes on command."
Has anyone else notices Google Voice Typing sucks now, too? It never starts listening when I start it up. I have to tap it a few times to get it to work.
Mine works ok still but I'm dying without ok Google being able to be used all over the phone.

Voice-to-text is fine again for me. Just had to clear cache for Play Services.
Works with Google Now Launcher
I too noticed the voice activation loss then went to GNL and it's working again.
So now not sure it ever worked or I only noticed when I used GNL prior. In any case gonna keep it on the phone as the feature is very useful to me.
I'm using Nova Launcher and it has a feature to use it unfortunately can't use it when phone is locked.
