Help, phone is bricked?? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i searched the forums and couldnt find a thread on how to unbrick the G1 and i dont know if there is one, but i tried to install a ROM i think it was like G3 or soemthing like that. and i installed the radio and after i installed the SPL thats when it stayed on the G1 T-Mobile screen. what can i do to fix it? thank you

well you probably have a brick. can you get into recovery(home and power) or bootloader(camera and power) if not, you have a brick.

yes i can get into both of those. home+power and camera+power

When you click on Camera+Power does it look like android skateboards or is it the rainbow screen? If it's at the skateboard screen what you'll need to do is load a ROM to the sd card. After you install the SPL it leaves the phone with no rom. Find an SD Reader and put a rom on it. Put the card back in the phone and boot into recovery (which hopefully you put on 1.4 so you don't have to rename the ROM to update.zip) click on flash any zip choose the one you see there and then allow it to install. Once it's done reboot the phone and you'll be good to go!

There's your fail right there. You sir, have a brick. Might want to look into a new phone.

since you can get into recovery, go to the recovery console and type
Code:
ums_enable
that will mount your sdcard, then put your rom on it. and type in the console
Code:
ums_disable
that will unmount your sdcard. then type into the console
Code:
reboot recovery
then once you get into recovery again, flash your rom and you should be set

What you need to do now is
TAKE OUT THE SD CARD, PUT A ROM ON THERE (A STABLE CYANOGEN ROM WOULD BE THE BEST) REBOOT INTO RECOVERY (HOME AND POWER AT THE SAME TIME) AND APPLY THE UPDATE. thats assuming you have recovery 1.4? IF NOT rename the cyanogen rom "update" if your using vista (without quotes) OR "update.zip" (again without quotes) if your on a mac. then reboot into recovery, apply the update, and reboot. that should work.

You don't need one!!
as David said, go to the recovery console and plug in your usb cable.
To enable usb mode type:
ums_enable
To disable usb mode type:
ums_disable
make sure you do use ums_disable before "reboot recovery" so you can flash a ROM.

what does the background of your recovery screen look like? is a orange triange? a picture that looks like it could cause a seizure? or a green android?
try hitting alt+x to get into the recovery console

Your supposed to update your radio first, then the SPL
But if your spl installed right anyway and your radio failed, you still may have a brick. If you can boot into recovery (Home + Power) or SPL/Bootloader (Cam + Power) then you could potentially recover. If you cannot access either of these or the ROM, your phone is bricked.
bigdookie, don't panic, try this method. Disconnect usb, take out the battery and plug it back it, connect usb, boot the phone into the recovery mode, go to the console.
Enter then type this: echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
You now can access to ur sdcard from your computer, download a rom, change it to "update". Reboot the phone again, now try to wipe and install the update. After you install the update, flash the radio first, then the SPL. Let me know how it works out for you.

Yeah, assuming he can get to the recovery console. I think he flashed the SPL, then tryed to get in to recovery to flash the radio but he couldn't and ended up with a brick. That's the only thing that would make sense.
This seems to be happening to so many people, it's hard to have sympathy when there are warnings plastered everywhere..

please help me un-brick my phone

ekh... bought a nexus one off craigslist. it was already rooted. i used it for a day and then decided i didnt want to keep it, so i decided to do a hard reset. it's now stuck on the screen with the four different colors (nexus symbol) and the unlocked lock on the bottom. i've done the clear storage by holding the volume down (or trackball) and pressing power. i've tried to go through all those settings and cleared everything, but it still wont load..
any ideas? do i need to re-flash the original rom? can i flash a rom if it doesnt boot up? please help, as this is my first android phone and i've had it all of 24 hrs.. thanks
omar
Omar,
Please read the second sticky post in the forum "[ROM] Original Shipping - Tutorial" This has all the files and will tell you the steps to return your phone to the original shipping rom.
You can skip to step 5 once you download the necessary files. To get into fastboot mode on the phone do the following:
1. Power off the phone
2. Hold down the volume down key and press the power button (continuing to hold the volume down key)
3. Release both and it should boot into a white screen with the top, highlighted, option being fastboot
4. Press the power button to enter into fastboot mode. The screen should say fastboot-usb in red
Once you see fastboot usb you can begin to erase and flash the roms per the instructions.
FYI: The fact that your phone is booting to the four colored X logo means that your phone is not bricked. It is simply in some sort of boot loop. A bricked phone will show nothing on the screen and will not connect to the computer in any way shape or form.
if anyone can help me via AIM i would really appreciate it. i think i'm just about there, just need a little more info

i'm trying to figure out this fastboot thing.. i got the USB thing to work, so now my computer detects the phone. i downloaded fastboot but it keeps giving me some error message that it cant find some file... any ideas from there? thanks
omar
ok.. found and downloaded the sdk, and now when i open fastboot, it just closes right away.. wtf am i doing wrong?
You are running fastboot from a command prompt right?
To open a command prompt type "cmd" into run.
Posting a thread in the right forum might get you some help. =]
Hope you have a custom recovery (most likely). Hold volume down and push the power button. Then on the white screen, press volume down once and select Recovery by pressing Power. Hopefully, you'll have Amon Ra's recovery. If so, then you will be sent into this recovery screen where you can turn on USB mode which will allow you to connect to your computer so you can download a ROM onto your SD Card. Do that.
Then you disconnect...wipe everything under the 'Wipe' settings...then Flash the new ROM. You should be good to go from there!

[Q] Need to download a nandroid backup. Got stuck on bootloop, no power button

My nexus one is stuck in a bootloop, the power button is broken and it has a locker bootloader, so i cant flash a update.zip or a custom rom, can't flash or access the amon ra recovery (amon ra was already installed, so i tried to install again and it didnt worked) or even it's original recovery.img.
The only thing i think i can do is to flash a nandroid backup with fastboot, but i don't have one. Can anyone send me one for me to try to fix it?
I dont live in the USA, so there is no way i can send it to HTC to fix it
I think you're a little confused. The reason the recovery didn't flash via fastboot is because your bootloader is locked, it's also the reason why attempting to flash nandroid .img files will also not work. You can either unlock the bootloader or use the PASSIMG method to get into a working system, at which point you can adb reboot recovery to restore your nandroid. There are other ways but I find this to be the quickest and simplest.
Can't do either of those things without a power button.
If you have Amon Ra's recovery installed then you can use ADB to boot into it (adb reboot recovery), or install Quickboot from the Market, and do what you need to.

First thing is to power up your n1 w/o touching the power button.
Here is how:-
The trick is to connect the phone via USB to a power source (a charger or computer) and then to remove and insert the battery successively, after a while (5-10 insertions) the device will get confuse and will start.
Once u power up, proceed to your recovery and do whatever u need to do to recover your bootloop.

Sure, here you go. Once completed you can either pull your battery or fastboot reboot to get into the stock ROM. From there, I'm sure you know what to do

Just one more question, will i need the power button for this PASSIMG method? because mine is broken, that's why i can't unlock my bootloader neither. on the bootloader unlock method it says that i need to press the power button to confirm the procedure.
I think with the PASSIMG method you don't need the power button.

PASSIMG method didn't worked. It says:
Hold down the Volume Down button as you power your phone back on.
A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. This will take up to 2 minute
When i power on the phone and press volume down, it just boots at fastboot, nothing else happens =\
Vol- should take you to HBOOT? To get to Fastboot you'd have to hold the trackball.

yeah, u're right
I already tried trackball vol up, vol down, nothing happened
Well that's good then. When you get into HBOOT you should see text flash up on the screen that it's checking for the passimg, then it should as you to use a volume button to say yes/no
If you're getting to hboot and nothing is happening, it's probably an error with your file:
Check the file name.
Check that it isn't a zip within a zip.
Make sure you used a shipped image.
Check the md5.
Try with FRG33, I've used it in the past and its worked fine. Also as danger-rat said, make sure it isn't named PASSIMG.zip.zip as Windows usually hides file extensions.

Well, i tryed using clockwork with a 1024mb EXT, 512mb ad a 5120mb with 32mb of swap. All of them caused the bootloop.
Try no swap.
Also, I would recommend not using CWM 3.x (if u r?)

[q] lg l90 d415

After downloading CM11 and GApps, I put it in my SD card and went into my recovery cwm9 by using an app. I got in and tried to flash my zips but I couldn't find them. Before I actually tried to flash them I did this first:
Wipe cache ( only required on first installation )
Wipe Dalcik cache ( only required on first installation )
Format /system and optionally /data ( Only necessary if coming from stock or a different ROM )
So when I rebooted I was greeted by getting stuck at the T-mobile boot splash.
I don't know how to get into recovery manually. I can't try to use download mode because I used fastboot. When I get into fastboot I tried using ADB to boot into recovery but device is not found when I'm in fastboot.
Please help me, I literally just got this phone and wanted to flash a custom rom because the LG stock is disgusting.

See FAQ thread for getting into recovery.
[SIZE=+1]Q14: I've flashed a custom recovery but what are the key combos to get there?[/SIZE]
Power off the device
Press and hold Power + Volume down
When the LG logo appears on the screen, quickly release the Power button, still holding the Volume down button, and press and hold Power again until the "Factory Reset" screen appears. Don't worry, this won't reset the device.
Use the volume keys to navigate up and down and Power to select. Scroll down and select "Yes" and repeat once more. It may take up to 10 seconds for the device to boot to recovery.
I've now gotten into the recovery and installed both cyanogenmod and GApps. I've actually had to change the rom found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-l90/development/rom-cyanogenmod-11-lg-l90-lg-d415-t2871371
I've had to change the updater script that contained "w7" to "w7ds" because it said my device wasn't w7 and that it was w7ds.
I've rebooted and now it's just stuck on the cyanogenmod boot screen.
What do?

You've got an older recovery it seems. Download Philz-Touch from my thread, the link you posted, or get TWRP from this thread
Since you're having booting issues, use fastboot to flash the recovery.
Thing is when I'm in fastboot, ADB won't detect my device. I've only gotten it to detect my device once and that's when I was unlocking my bootloader. I don't know how to do it again.
So what do I do? BTW, thanks for helping me.
Edit: I formatted everything again and tried to reinstall the cyanogenmod and GApps. Seems like I just had to wait for the boot screen.

Put device in fastboot mode. ADB can't detect the device when it's in fastboot mode.
Type:
Code:
fastboot devices
You should see a listing similar to "adb devices" output.
Copy recovery image to the same folder fastboot is in. Then type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
or
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
First one will only write the recovery image to the device. The second on will write the image to the device and should then boot the device to the recovery.
EDIT:
Yes, the first boot takes a couple minutes.
Seems I just had to wait for bootscreen.
How do I turn data on and off?

just pull your battery out
and this how you can get into recovery, its from that thread for unlocking bootloader etc
HOW TO BOOT INTO RECOVERY PRESSING VOLUME AND POWER KEY
You can reboot to recovery via flashify app or following key combination: -
Power of your phone press both Volume Down + Power Button same time, As soon as the LG logo appears release both buttons and immediately press and hold same buttons (Volume Down+Power) again. Now Factory data reset screen will appear saying "Erase all user data & restore default settings?". Use volume down key to select "Yes" and press power button to confirm and now you should be in recovery.
