Hello all, sorry if this is a basic question, but wasnt able to find any results.
Over the past few days, I have been staying up late almost every single night and trying out different ROMs in this forum.
1. The Dude's ROM
This rom looks nice, but almost all applications crashed like nuts. Then I realised the developer has gone on a vacation, so cant really use this.
2. Cyan's ROM
Fast, but still uses SD for theapps. I have a class 2 sdhc, and that isnt fast enough and hence the apps are a bit slow to respond. Crashes are much much lesser than #1.
3. Hero's ROMs
Very well made, fantastic ROM, absolutely stunning UI but again dependency on the SDCARD is immense and is thus a limitation to me. Also I saw the actual HTC Hero has much higher ROM space (512mb compared to 288 of Dream/G1 and more ram 256 vs 198 of G1) and hence is much better suited to run the HTC's Rosie.
So now I think my needs would want me a basic android cupcake ROM without much fancy stuff. The bare minimum. Do we have such a ROM?
If we do, please let me know.
---------------------------
Update : I am looking for a base android system with root. If possible maybe start building on something. I have experience tweaking kernels on a desktop , but has _never_ tried anything mobile.
I was suggested to use Haykuro's 6.0r1 , but it does use apps2sd and so does cyan's rom.
Well my idea is to find/create a ROM which would be light and fast and we could do some work optimizing the kernel for faster loads and quick runs.
Any suggestions, guides, materials on how to start would be greatly helpful.
----------------------
Goal : A quick to boot, fast ROM with low battery consumption.

JF tends to work on the stock roms, and just roots it, with very minor modifications. But super stable, fast, and works excellent.
Haykuro's ion rom
Use Haykuro's IOn Rom its fast stable and just your basic android goodness

Actually, most ROMs that make use of some form of A2SD (apps on SD cards) do so conditionally. Both Haykuro and cyanogen have ROMs that put the /system/app directory on the SD card only if the SD card has a prepared ext2/3 partition present at boot. What this means is that if you are using a regular SD card, or if you repartition your card as FAT32, then the ROM will not implement A2SD.
However, I am in agreement with you for the gist of the request. I would also like to see an optimized ROM based on AOSP (like cyanogen or TheDude), but one that implements fewer customizations. Personally, I am currently using cyanogen's 3.9, which has great performance, and the fastest boot times I have had from any other ROM. It seems to run through the battery a little faster than others, but it is the best so far.
jf or cyanogen
even though u have an class 2 apps2sd would work good. i had a lame stock 1gig tmo gives with the fone and i had no problem with it. or jf as close to stock as possible
You do know that Apps2SD is not a requirement for CyanogenMod, right? If you have a single Fat32 partition on your card, Apps2SD is disabled and all apps will go to the phone's internal memory. Of course in this case you are limiting yourself to the amount of apps you can have installed at any given time due to the relatively small space left on the intmem after the OS is installed. Also, if you install too many apps your phone will start slowing down considerably because the apps basically eat up the available RAM.
Personally, half the reason for rooting my phone in the first place was running apps on SD card. My co-worker has yet to root his G1 and he constantly has to juggle apps and games so that he can have at least 10MB internal memory free, otherwise his phone starts slowing down to a crawl.
I'm working on an HTC ADP version of what you seek!
I've had two other people ask for this from me!
I create a "US specific" version for T-Mobile Users.
See thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456).
Would you be interested in a HTC ADP plain rooted (no features) version? I'm trying to gauge the need here ?
I'm tryin to finish a lite version of ion. I don't think I can strip anything else out without it breaking. The whole purpose behind the lite version will be to put what customizations you want on it. It a lot slimmer than a standard jf release.
soulife's ion - probably another good bet
Soulife's ION build (lite), (as it sounds), would also be a another good build for you likely!
He makes/ports good/stable ROM's.

Lol I still use this P.O.S. It's actually not too bad since I haven't experienced the greateness of a class 6 card. I'm happy with my G1 performance.
did you try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456
and I just rooted someone's phone with a stock 1gb no class card and it runs Cy3681 great. Compcache is the best.
where can i get the default g1 wallpapers? i realize how dumb that sounds but ive googled them, looked for them in the themes section, and searched through the files of the 25 or so builds i have downloaded from here...i am not smart.
I also wanted a stock rom with just root and without the piles of shi.... code that are being piled on top of the custom builds. I found two easy ways to it;
1. JF's roms. All he does is root it and release it. Unfortunately, for the cupcake builds, he got the awful idea of talking with crazy narcissist haykuro and actually implemented a2sd on 1.51 and 1.51r2. Getting rid of it is nastily simple, though. Just delete a2sd from /system/bin and you're done.
2. Get a dump of an official OTA rom, put the modified su binary in /system/bin, superuser.apk on /system/app, and pack it with a rooted boot.img, or if you can modify kernel (i don't know that much linux) root your own boot.img. Look through somebody else's update-scripts so you can make your own (I've found cyanogen's and JF's to be amongst the cleanest, easiest to read and figure out).
soulife, I'd love to see what you come up with. I have among my stash of experimental stuff a slimmed down ION r2 that only kept a few apps (Phone, contacts, browser, mms, cameras, and settings), but quickly felt that there really was no reason to slim it down so bare. With ION, there's still a lot of space left in system, even with a stock spl, and after an install it's never used again, so I felt I should be adding instead of removing apps than let that empty space go to waste, specially since there's really no replacement or improved app for the ones that were removed
I suggest you go out and buy a new micro sd card, preferably a class 4 or 6 micro sd card. Then you can really begin enjoying the capabilities of root.
4gb class 4 by adata for 12 bucks i believe on newegg.
8gb transcend class 6 for $19, also on newegg.
i just switched back to JF 1.51 with the hero theme 1.4.5. I think it might still have the a2sd script in it but it's optional, but boot time is MUCH faster than cyanogens current builds.
The stock ION and Rogers ROMs are good as well, but I do enjoy the hero theme on JF , although the Rogers dialer is a great thing to have.

Wow...**** code. Who'd a thunk that people would be modifying stock ROMs on a developers forum. If you are going to debase a developers work, at least specify which developer. The way your statement reads, nothing but crap comes out of this forum.
Hey guys,
I've recently installed CyanogenMod on my 32A Rogers Dream and couldn't be happier.
I've been tempted to format my memory card and run Apps2sd but I've stumbled onto this quote which I'm hoping someone could explain:
"If you have a 32a, there's simply no reason to ever use Apps2SD/swap imho - the best way to resolve this would be to delete the extra partitions on your sdcard, wipe and reinstall."

the 32A has the same amount of ram/memory as the HTC Hero, wich is enough for aprox 500 apps , the 32B and the dream however have a severely limited amount of memory, so we use a2sd/swap to fix this.
simply put, 32A is better so doesnt need it. (and yes the internal mem is way faster then apps on an sdcard, so no reason whatsoever to use a2sd/swap)
oh yea and if you already had 3 partitions, start from scratch-> wipe your phone, and reformat your sdcard to only Fat32
So it looks like I have a 32B as I only have 40 MB of space left on the actual device, and which is what is stated in HBOOT, but to flash the unit I needed to use 32A as indicated in the Recovery Flasher app that IDed it as a EBI1/32A.
Any ideas?
This thread should clear things up

Ok Guys, new to this site, hopefully y'all can help me out.
I recently rooted my G1, Installed the latest Cyanogen (4.7.2.1) and installed a theme ( Marks Theme). I dont have very many apps cause I didnt want to bog down the phone memory.....
I love the set up but it started running slower even after I started running the over clocker widget.
My phone is only showing 14.18 MB of free internal memory. I went through my applications installed and can only find around 25 MB being used from all installed apps ( including browser and messaging etc.)
I even tried to do a factory reset ( by going through the settings) and the factory reset is not working. It changed nothing.
Is there something that Im missing? I feel like I should have much more free memory.
I love the way my phone works and the set up, I just wish it had more free memory so that it would run faster.
Ive thought about doing the Apps2SD but I feel like I chould have much more memory on my phone even before doing something like that.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A section. You'll receive a better response to such things there.
The internal memory you're referring to is your /system partition.
It is where the entire OS is stored, basically. Which takes up, in your case, a whopping 55 MB (out of 70 MB).
If you //really// want more room, follow the Apps-2-SD tutorials out there. You'll get /plenty/ of space.
You could always upgrade to the new amon ra and then let it partition the sd card for you. Then you can have all that free phone storage for whatever it is.Bext time just try to restrict yourself from posting in wrong section
-Best regards

Thank you for the quick response. Is there a way to move this thread?
Also is there a better ROM that will take up less memory? I like this version but obviously it is wayy to large.
Anyone else running cyanogen 4.7.2.1 having this issue?
Most people using the Cyanogen ROM also utilize A2SD. Partition your SD card and you'll get more room.

There is no issue, you just don't have an ext partition ergo, all applications are installed to your phone which is why you have low phone memory.

Hello! app2SD will put the apps to ext...Then you will have more memory, why do you think people use it? To save even more money on geico?
Go here for the amon recovery...

Hi, first of this has nothing to do with development, should be in Q&A. Please remember for next time
OK, when you're on a custom ROM, don't use factory reset. Instead boot in to the recovery image and perform a wipe from there, and that's exactly what I'd suggest. Be prepared to loose everything stored on the phones memory, but you can use a backup app from the market for that... No you really should way more space than that, I can't really explain why...

The phone has two main partitions: /system and /data. It isn't /system that's filling up, it's /data (which makes sense...). The phone can't write to /system when it's unrooted, so it's not possible to store files there...
Everyone is trying to help but for a noob it can be a bit too much...4.2.7.1 is the best Rom available so keep that....RA Recovery is the best way to set up your memory card to accept your apps and keep them there freeing up a ton of space on the phone....simple way to fix is....Just format you sdcard with EXT3 using the RA-recovery v1.5.1 then once your card is formatted just reboot and Cyanogen's rom will move all the apps for you.....will not need to wipe any info on the phone that way...done it many times......Pm me if you need help!!!!

Young Money. Cash Money.
(partition sd card)
The non rooted standard T-Mobile rom is about the same size and will give you about the same amount of free space. There could be a more barebones rom but I think it's just a lot easier to run Apps2SD then to create a rom that might get you an extra 10mb of internal space. This is the fault of the internal memory on the phone being small. The only way to fix that is getting Apps2sd running which if you make a partion of 100mb should be enough to install all the apps you need. Getting a larger SD card for $10 is also another option so you wont have 1/10th of your sd cards storage gone.

You can always try different roms. CM is good and fast, but maybe try dwang 1.13 or Wesgarner version. wg is based on CM. I find it faster and more stable but this is just my opinion. if you back everything up with nandroid and some app like mybackup, you can flash all you want. you'll be able to get everything back with a nandroid/mybackup restore. try different stuff out and figure out what you like!
hey guys, i tried to post this in dwangs rom but it gets lost in the tread and not answered.
My phone has been running a bit slow lately, i want to switch to this "fast" rom.
I am currently on cyanogen's rom
My spl is 1.33.2005
My radio is 3.22.20.17
my phone is 32B, the important part is that my phone is EBI1
would I be able to flash his rom to my phone and would i need to wipe? does that mean that i need to reinstall all apps and songs and stuff?
I think you will need to load all apps again.
I am a bigtime noob, but I think I asked that question and I was told whenever you put a new rom on you have to load all the stuff again. I imagine if you have songs and apps on your sd card it is easier to install again. I want to know if having a larger or faster sd card helps it process faster? I mean, can the phone use the card as ram to help it process more,it is it more like a hard drive so just gives faster access to the programs loaded on the card?
yes it is possible to do that ram hack, search button it. Alot of ppl dont do it for a number of reasons including the 3d graphics arent as good after it. But does anyone know about the compatibility of my phone with the rom?

A Class 6 Card will make a small difference on your phone since you're running APPS2SD it'll be able to access information from your EXT partition faster than a Class 2/4 card.
There is Swapper (search in market)... Almost like a Page file for windows. You can also set the Swap file to be on your EXT partition so when you mount your sdcard it won't get corrupted, etc.
Has anyone done this.
Ok so people have been telling me OCLG is great -- but you can't install it if you have alot of apps.
Then 2.2 froyo brings about the ability to move your apps to your SD (thereby enabling OCLG i suppose?)
But doesn't moving your apps to your SD lag/slow down your computer anyways ?
What would be the solution here?
I am getting my phone back later today (after bricking it) and it will FINALLY have the download/recovery option on it. Which means I'm going to start flashing roms etc. I was told to flash the newest 2.2 firmware with root and OCLG and it will be flying.
However I am the type of guy who d/l's tons of apps. To the point where OCLG wouldn't work on my phone (2.1) because apps took up all the space.
So once I get it back later today, and install 2.2, and load it up with apps, will OCLF work? please help me out.
basically just want to know if moving your apps to your SD will slow down your phone or not. Does anyone else have 2.2 with OCLG and alot of apps? how does your phone run?
o_0 how many apps do you have? I've got 130+, but it's not used more that a quater of the 2GB available for apps.

I've got over 200 or so.
What do you mean "it's" not used to it ? So your saying the OCLF can't work with more than 200 apps? The point of this thread was to ask about Apps-to-sd --- using Apps to SD would obviously reduce the amount of space (2gb) the apps are using up right ? So this would have an effect of HELPING the OCLF, no ?
My question pertains to 2.2 froyo -- and whether or not the apps-to-sd slows down the phone.
Does ANYONE here use 2.2 with ALOT of apps and OCLF ?
no one ? cmon

It[ ha]'s not used more than. 200 or so apps shouldn't fill up the 2GB internal storage. Which SGS do you have? Is it one with 2gb app storage space, or one with less?
I've never understood why anyone would need to use apps2sd on a SGS. Not with that much internal storage space.
