Menu key not working anymore - works like back key - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I have a HTC G1/Dream (from T-Mobile, unlocked) that was running perfectly until 1 or 2 days ago with Cyanogen 4.0.4. Then, the menu key started to sork very strangely : if on the home screen and pressing the menu key, I would get the home screen menu, but if in an application and pressing the menu key to reach the application's menu and options, I would land back into the home screen.
So, with Cyanogen releasing his stable 4.2.2 mod, I though I could just go and install it and it would probably remove this problem.
I rebooted in recovery console, did a wipe, and installed the ROMs as instructed by Cyanogen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610).
My Dream rebooted nicely into the new ROM, but the menu key problem is not there : in the setup process once booted, you have to sign in with your Google account, but for this you need of course an APN. I can get into the mobile settings, get into the APN list (which is empty) but if I press the menu key in order to get the menu that would allow me to add a new APN, it just goes back to the wireless settings, and if pressing menu key once more, I'll get to the first page of the setup.
So, I'm kind of ****ed. Everything works fine except the menu key, so the phone becomes unusable. I thought the menu key on the physical keyboard would be an alternative, but it's just unresponsive.
OK, I though I could just go back to recovery console, wipe everything once more, and then just apply the 1.6 Android recovery image from HTC (the one Cyanogen points to, to be installed before his ROM). It installs fine, and reboot fine as well. But same issue : once my SIM card pin is entered, I can start the setup process but the menu key is again working like the back key.
Anyone ever had such a problem ? Is there a way to solve this ?
Thanks a lot in advance, guys.

Mmmmh, I realize I was not very clear in my post above... A bit too nervous.
Anyway, problem is solved.
I tried first to wipe several times, even went back to flashing a HTC RC29 image but I still had the issue of the home key working like the back key, the menu key on the physical keyboard not working, and even more crazy, letter "a" on my physical keyboard would indeed input an "a" but followed by a enter.
How did I solve this problem ? Using the method we, human, use since hundreds of thousands of year : HITTING ! So I slammed my G1 very hardly on my table, and it works again Must have been so connexion issues with the motherboard and the keys/keyboard... But I wouldn't dare hitting it like I did a second time...

G1 big problems

Hay i have a rooted G1 with Jf - can't rember what version.
I've been having lots of problems with force closing of various programs but otherwise everything was going fine.
After a few force closes today i decided to restart my phone, turned it off and then back on and stuck it in my pocket.
When i went to check my texts 5 minuets later i took it out and it was just stilling on the 'Android' splash screen - it was moving then freezing for a few seconds then moving (i don't know if that's normal but it wouldnt surprise me).
I took the battery out and restated again and exactly the same thing - it would not boot.
I did a quick search on the problem and remembered how to boot in camera+red mode - which the phone did fine. I then read that pushing green+menu+red would fix it.
I did this and the phone booted, but it lost all my home screen icons and was laid out like when the phone was bought. i then cheked an app or two and they are all still there and seem to have retained their data.
However other strange things are happening - the home button dosnt work, nether does the green, when i hold the red button i only get the 'power off' option not 'power off, silent and airplane' as i used to.
They are the problems i have found so far but there may be more. Basically i want to know what pushing green, menu, red actually does and i want to know what the hell is going on - im totally lost.
Please help
P.S. i did a test on the consol and it seems i still have root assess - just encase that relative
Go to recovery, wipe and reflash. It will solve all your issues.
I can't actually remember how to do that - can you explain more or link me?
and will it have any effect on my apps or settings?

You're going to need to go into recovery; press the home screen button, then the red (energize, end call, whatever) button. Hold both down until you get into recovery, which will be the text menu with all the selections available in green. Then scroll down to "wipe data/ factory reset" and do that- this simply wipes the phones internal memory. Then load the rom you are using, which I assume is already on the root of your sd card. If not, connect the phone, mount the card, and put the rom there before you get started with the above steps- chris

[Q] Phone unusable - Launcher Pro (android.process.acore)

Hi everyone,
I was using my nexus one with low battery, and then it shut down.
I went back to car, attached it to the recharger, and pushed power button.
At this point it turned on and a setup similar to first boot appeared (selection of language, date & time, google account)..
Once the setup was completed, I pressed the home button and associated it with Launcher Pro.
At this point a popup message appeared, saying (translated from italian):
"Sorry! Sudden interruption of the application Launcher Pro (process Android.process.acore). Retry.", with a button named "Retry".
- If I press the "Retry" button, the same popup message appears on and on again.
- If I shut the phone down and restart it, it asks for the SIM pin, the unlock pattern, and then the popup message appears again and again..
- I can't access the menu through the button, and I am stuck in this situation!..
- I tried to uninstall Launcher Pro via appbrain about two hours ago, but with no luck..
Any help would be much appreciated..
Thanks!

Assuming you aren't rooted, I just want to let you know you always have the last resort of resetting the phone back to default, so the phone itself is still fine.
With root, you can ADB and remove LauncherPro.
Hi cigar3tte,
I'm not rooted, so I could "reset the phone back to default".
Do you mean reset it to factory default (aka hard reset)?
Note: If I press the menu button at the bottom of the device, nothing happens and the popup keeps showing up
However, the procedure I found for the hard reset is this:
"With the phone shut off, while holding down the volume button on the side of the N1, press the power button briefly while maintaining the volume button pressed in for around 5-10 seconds.
You should be presented with a menu that allows for: Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock. You can release the volume button at this time.
Select Clear storage with the volume button up and down, then press and release the power button to make the selection.
It will ask you to confirm this decision. Press the yes button using the volume up."
Should i proceed so?
Thanks!

Yes, I meant a factory reset. Before doing so, check for any data you might want to save.
As for the method, what you found should work fine. I've never done a hard reset from the default recovery. I've only done it from the phone itself (which you can't access) and custome recovery.
Hi cigar3tte,
I followed your suggestion and did the shut-off-and-on procedure.
After that, I was asked to complete the initial configuration (time, google account, etc). and I am now on the home screeen!
Thank you so much for your help!
For future reference, you would probably have been able to fix this without wiping... turn the phone on, then when the X appears hold the trackball, it should boot in safe mode and you can remove/clear data as needs be.
AuraxTSense ROM - I know someone having this issue, anything they can try short of full wipe?

Strange Problem: Possibly Half Bricked

I have been running CM6 on my G1 for a while with no major issues. However, this morning when I woke up, the phone was not turning on. The screen comes up with the bootloader white screen and keeps turning off. I had installed Advanced Task Killer the previous night and I suspected that it must have done something to the system. So I decided to reinstall everything from scratch, starting from DREAIMG.nbh.
My G1 looked to me as the T-Mobile UK version, so i used the RC7 DREAIMG.nbh. It flashed okay and booted fine. And when the Google account setup screen showed up, I tried to type my account details but very strangely I could only type the letters e d f x only. All others keys don't show up or do anything. I booted many times but the keyboard doesn't work at all, except those four keys.
I then wanted to flash RC29 thinking that I flashed the wrong version earlier. But now when I press Camera + Power, nothing happens. So I cant go to the bootloader screen. It just boots normally to the setup screen. I can however get the recovery screen when I press Home + Power but then because the keyboard's Alt or W is not working, I cant do a wipe either.
I also checked if it is talking to ADB, but ADB does not see the G1 either in recovery screen or after it has booted up normally.
I have been reading all day all over this forum, as well as others but did not find any similar problem or a way forward. Can anyone suggest how to get it back to normal. I don't think its totally bricked because it boots up normally and it can also go into recovery mode.

Reset itself overnight

Without doing anything myself, my Moto X 2014 has almost reset itself whilst I was asleep.
The first warning was no notifications, there's always an email or two, but then it wouldn't let me pull the quick settings down either. The phone wasnt using Smart Lock, in fact most system settings were reset. I figured something might be wrong with xposed (however, it's been running for months with no change, no updates to Android, xposed framework, or modules) so I updated all the modules and rebooted, still nothing. For some reason I went and switched to guest account, then switched back to my account and I'm now able to see notifications I missed and use phone almost normally. But my settings had reset and after setting swiftkey back up I see "Predictions not available. Check SD card." so typing is a pain.
My home button isn't working either, it flashes but doesn't do anything. The back and multitasking buttons work. Holding home button brings up Google Now on Tap, but it doesn't take me to home screen.
What could have happened? Is my storage knackered? Its not near full. Just to be clear, all my apps remained installed and logged in as far as I can tell. Only SwiftKey and the Home buttons remain as a problem.
Edit: Bluetooth devices also reset, wasn't connected to car stereo.
Edit 2: reinstalled swiftkey and predictions came back. Rebooted and they went again! Home button still not working.
Edit 3: Installed CatLog and when I press home it says: Not starting activity because user setup is in progress. So it thinks I'm trying to do first time setup? My accounts are already there (one of the settings that did remain).
Edit4: Ran
Code:
am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity
as root (use su command) in terminal emulator and managed to complete setup... Home button works now and SwiftKey predictions seem to be working after a few reboots.
I hope that never happens again.

Stuck in activation menus

I havent used this phone in a while but, today I turned it on and used it to check for files before i sold it. The phone was just as I had left it, working fine and I got all my files and did a factory reset. It booted up fine and and took me through the normal activation menus. Asking for a wifi connection I hit skip and it just goes back to the beginning of the menus, I connect to wifi and it still goes back to the beginning what ever options i choose it takes me back. I am able to get to the home screen through the lock screen menus but it doesn't work correctly like having no home button. I checked the phone and im on Marshmallow ZVB 1.04. i tried to factory reset again and now i can get all the way through the menus but it still goes back to the beginning and home screen is jacked. Where should i start to fix this?
