I'm a bit of a typography snob, and also a big Android fan. This is the first time, however, I
have decided to combine the two. I enjoy it when the theme I apply overwrites my default
font, I quite like dark themes, and am not afraid of a bit of colour and innovation. Hopefully,
these all show through in my concept ideas for a theme I want to have on my G1.
I went with a calming green colour, because I like red, but don't like infuriating colours to
greet me every time I look at my phone, and I also wanted something quite minimalist.

Mock-Up & Bootscreen
Things that my theme will have that (most) others don't:
░ The 'Super'-3G IconI wanted to incorporate the Upload/Download part of that icon into the actual 3G
itself (see screenshot) and have the upload as the 3, and the download as the G.▒ A colourful boot screen! Why has no-one thought of this? As far as I know (I haven't made a theme yet,
so I could be wrong) the bootscreen consists of a top image with a hole in it, and
a moving piece underneath for the 'shine'. The top piece could easily be colourful.
My bootscreen shows what I would hope to achieve.▓ Percentage battery meterI prefer to see my battery as a percentage, even if it is not possible to have an
accurate one in the top bar (incremental images I would prefer e.g.: 0%, 15%, 30% etc.)
*** Edit:
I want to include AdvancedLauncher in my design. Does anyone know how to go about skinning that?
*** Edit #2:
Also, I have realised quite how busy I am. I would be happy to do all the graphical work, but have three A-Levels in the next 13 Days, so don't have much time to resign packages and blah and blah. Anyone fancy a collab theme? It would probably involve me doing most/all the image editing and someone else packaging it/making it work/beta testing.
*** Edit #3:
Currently testing a font reversion .zip to see if the font works well/at all in UI.

Haha, I've planning to make the SAME arrow like yours..
I'd rock it.
Great to see other designers start looking into android themes, but the problem is the limitations we face. Most of the issues you point out as to 'why hasn't anyone done this yet' is due to limitation of what we can and cannot use.
Boot screen: I've made full screen boot images in the past but the latest rom's are limited to 256 width, out of 320, so you'd see two very ugly black lines going down either side of your image if you try to do that. Anything bigger than a 256wide image results in full white screen oddity.
Battery Percentages: Again, limitations. Although I'd like to see a percentage readout as well, but the current system uses about 6 images in this incriments: 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100. You can use text images to display say 80% but it'll stay 80% all the way down to when it gets to 60%, for some thats a big drop, and they rather see a graphic reprensentation of the same.
As far as the 3G icon, thats completly and easily doable, as long as you have a clear defined images for data in, data out, both data in and out, and none data in and out. As far as the other stuff I see, launcher is easily doable, as well as the widget changes.
I suggest you look into a basic metamorph theme, then start editing the images included to match your taste. You can get a decent working version out of your vision easily. Ask around for help especially with .9.png images, there are tons of theme makers ready to help out.

Maybe I can save you a little time- you'll find the "boot flash image" in the framework-res/assets/images folder. Your are right about the top and bottom layers, but it is not a gif; they are png's. I will attach the one I am currently incorporating into my latest efforts.- ChrisView attachment 264418

Bad news, but I'm going to go for a gradient to black on either side, probably, to make it a bit prettier =D

And, using the above boot underlay's dimensions, what about this as the other 'layer'?

looks good. very doable now for the boot. however, if you want to accomplish that speedy blink in the word "TYPOGRAPH", all you have to do is make the width of your logo-shine smaller. that way, it goes much faster. currently most android-logo-shine.png's are 512 in width which is why they zoom through slowly. dont forget to make your word "TYPOGRAPH" transparent in your logo mask or else the logo-shine won't be seen. good luck .

hi !
I am the android taskiller developper and I read the xda android themes section everyday.
And I am programming a powerfull skin system for android like baterrystatus on Windows Mobile.
Many system info can be read and rendered on the screen with XML configuration file and pictures on SDCARD.
See this sample (the default home screen):
Time is rendered using LCD font
Battery percentage is text and icon
I think many designers will make many beautifull themes with it !

That's cool, but I kinda wanted a slower shine through, because it looks a little hurried in the preliminary .gif I made, so maybe 512 is a smart width. The 'Typograph' is transparent at the moment, with the 'for Android' not.

Nice concept, but as with any design the usage of too many fonts is a no-no.

Good luck getting it to kern correctly. I think this is why most of the mods use Trebuchet, as it is designed to be used on screens, and has less issues that need fine tuning. Still, I wish you well

I haven't got any further, because I can't find JF's Resigning tool. The link to it at FightForthePits.com/testsign(2).zip is down, and I can't find another =S

Why don't you use MetaMorph, no signing required.
Well after making all those icons I was a little disappointed in how fast my battery was dead from using all those animations and everything. Also the blue squares get bored so I came up with a little more stylish idea. So it looks good as well when I am over at customers.
So I took a new default WAD2 theme (just black screen) and started up all over again, just using the basic items I really use and leave all animation out of it. For two reasons, battery consumption and my X1 is a little to slow to work fast with it;-) During daytime I set this theme as default, simple, stylish, quick and accurate.
It contains in basic just 2 home screens which you can reach sliding upwards or downwards. From those two pages you can enter more pages like applications, weather and games. For applications and games I will add all icons I made in 2 different folders so you can add whatever you're favorites are. I will post them seperately so you can put it on your storage card (because the files are 30MB) If you tap on the time the screens goes off, so saves battery as well.
Applications can handle 24 of your favorite programs.
Games can handle 24 of your favorite games
Calender shows your appointments for the coming week
Weather will show you the weather forecast for the coming 5 days.
VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIs6dRXGaTc
Here a screenshot of the home pages:
It is 40 MB in total:
wadesktop file is 10MB, press it and select the folder "Lakeridge"-"Wisbar Advance Desktop" - "Themes" to install it on your device. After around a minute a pop up screen tells you it's installed. Now start Wisbar Advance Desktop and change theme. Tap on "search for new themes". After a while a pop up screen appears " Have found 1 new theme". Select the PollPixx theme and in menu tap " Set as Portrait theme". Than tap apply! Enjoy....
The 30MB of Icons can be installed on your memorycard.
As I have a Dutch Rom you probably need to redirect the shortcuts. Easy: Just press long on the screen and choose Author Mode. Than press long on the icon you want to change the shortcut and choose properties. Choose Script on Tap and tap Launch a Programm, now tap edit and select the programm from your device. That's all.
In games and application if you want to change program or game, just select another image and edit Launch a Program to the program/game you prefer. All Icons of the most popular Games and Programs are in the zipfile. If you need another one, just let me now and I will make it for you.
Download zipfile over here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZS2J7YWA
Do you have suggestions to make it better without slowing it down, just shoot;-)
Cheers,
Arnold

What program do you use to create themes?
In this case I use Wisbar Advance Desktop (obviously) and for all the icons I used photoshop with some plugins from Nik Software to build.
I now want to create an as clean as possible theme which I can use when I am at work. No animation of barely dressed girls or too much colours, just a uniform easy to use theme for during the day. I will make a movie of it tonight.
Cheers,
Arnold

The only thing I used was the "back" Icon, but you know I am a photoshop lover so I can make also one in 4 seconds and that's not a graphic highlight which you can complain about. Switching pages is just in WAD2 as an option which I used. Further on I started over using my own Icons with nothing from you at all. What are you talking about??????
Don't let people think I am just ripping of your theme mister, just download it and you will see it will be all mine which I posted in the icons topic for your theme. As people liked those Icons so much (over 5500 downloads) you might have sold more of your theme, so don't start this discussion, because you will lose on all points my friend.
If you want I change the back Icon, but how pathetic would that be. Further on I can prove the rest is mine, all .psd files are in my computer with the date I made them, so long before you bullsh*t around now.
For christ sake, I even forward people to your site to buy your theme because it is so good, and now you are pulling my leg! Can I at least call this "typical" ???
Cheers,
Arnold
this variant looks free? is it? if so, good for u! You should release a skin for it with WP7 colors too.
Well Midvik is doing the coloured theme and also is rajivshahi, to avoid an overkill of these themes I think I stick with my variant. They do a great job.
Of course what I make is free, that's how it works here at XDA. However, everyone can donate if they like it.

Rock on man..im gunna use your icons on my phone is that ok? not a big WP& theme guy your icons are awsome tho.
And dont let them haters(lescro..or however the hell) talk crap. he is just pissed cuz you have better icons and skills.
AND TECHNICALLY LESCRO(AGAIN HOWEVER) you were basing yout theme of Windows Phone 7 theme so technically your jackin there **** to..so dont start complaining when people do a better job then you.
Of course that is okay, that's why I am posting my themes;-)
Well, I am definately not as good as lesscro and have no problem what so ever with him neither, he is good in modifying I am good in graphics (I earn my living making graphics), but it is great fun make those themes. But it is hard to make an original fresh idea

Hi guys,
[Warning: This will be of interest to a very small ammount of OCD people. I am one of those people]
This is a small (very small) project I've been working on for the past few days. Let me give you some background:
When I first saw renders of the HTC Sensation, I thought "Damn, that's a sweet wallpaper. I want it bad." When the Sensation's ROM dump came out, I immediately applied the default Sense 3.0 wallpaper... and it looked terrible.
Let me explain: we all know the HD2's screen has a limitation in colors that makes most images look different. But also, if you're using a Sense-based ROM like I am, if you apply a wallpaper through the gallery there's no dithering applied to the image. That's a technical way of saying you get badass color banding. So not only were the Sensation wallpaper's colors completely off, it was banded very badly.
So, how to fix this? You move the wallpaper to HTC's default wallpaper folder. But if you apply an image through that folder as-is, it gets shrunk, so the image has to have a frame to display it properly.
So basically, after going back and forth between reference images of the Sensation, Photoshop Pro and my phone's screen, I have:
1. Properly framed the image so that, when it's moved into HTC's default wallpaper folder (System/Customize/Resource/htc_wallpaper_03.jpg) it displays properly
2. Tuned the image to suit our phone's resolution
3. Tweaked the colors so that they display on our phone's screens to closely mirror the colors displayed by the HTC Sensation with the same image. When you view this image on your computer, it will look wrong, but when you apply it through the HTC wallpaper gallery and compare it with reference images to the HTC Sensation it is almost a perfect copy. Believe me, I've spent hours on this because it bugged me so much. Give it a try and see for yourself.
So if you've made it this far, you're probably as detail oriented as me and wondering how to apply this correctly.
1. Download the file to your phone
2. Through a rooted file manager, cut the file and paste it into system/customize/resource, in the process overwriting HTC's third default wallpaper. Why? Because it's dog ugly.
3. On your homescreen, hit menu, Wallpaper, then HTC wallpapers. Scroll to the third wallpaper. The image in the gallery will still be the HTC default, but hit preview and apply it.
4. Enjoy!
It's not perfect, but it's the best we can do with the HD2's color limitations.
This file is free for everyone to use and devs can include it in ROMs if they want.
Cheers,
Zuka
You're right Zuka, that is anal (but I like you for it ) Sort of attention to detail that makes all the difference - good work Now, if you could just resize all of the Sense 3.0 widgets and fix the graphics glitches...
I wish I was that good, but I'm going to have to leave that to more capable minds. This wallpaper is my gift to all of those that saw the Sensation/Evo3D and thought they looked cool, though
quiet lovely
It looks great, I love it!!
I should say thanks!!
many thanks, i need!
My HD2 sure very nice.
great! many thanx!! it looks great!
I'm glad you guys like it, happy to have been a help. Should tide us over until the Sensation is out/becomes affordable. Consider it a transitional phase
great, I love Sensation
It looks great man !
it is just like in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033234
I hadn't actually seen that post before, but it looks like me and you came to the same conclusion - if you tweak saturations here and there you get a much better image on the HD2's panel
The difference was, you could write a program to do it, I had to spend hours and hours doing it by hand cause i can't
Do I have to flash with cwm. I'm sorry I'm new .
No no, you don't need to use CWM at all. Use a rooted file manager (RootExplorer is my favourite, you can find it on the market for three dollars) and place the HTC_wallpaper_03.jpg file into the folder "system/customize/resource", click ok to overwrite, then apply the wallpaper from the homescreen

ok.i can write a programm, actually i already wrote it.but i will no share it because i done it for whole rom and it is not complete because after applying programm on rom it have some glitches.but i can share version that do automatically processing pictures only whitout reenginering apk, if you want it of course.
Just in case somebody's using this wallpaper with a Gingerbread build, the dithering is automatically applied through the gallery in 2.3.
So you don't have to go through all of the copy and pasting to get it non-color banded, you can just apply it from your home screen or the gallery itself. Happy wallpapering.
You are appreciated!
Thank you BIG time, its aggravating these walls are not just made available to us...I lost my original default screen wallpaper on this unlocked T-mobile Sensation, (its a geometric linear thing that I just like & when it disappeared I tried call HTC, but they said they could not find it in their gallery & could not send it to me, (what, really!!?) That was a bite, then I rummaged all over Google & every Android community I could find for 2 days until some one took pity & posted it on xda. Spent hours last nite & today trying to crop it right because HTC's crop just butchers it tried paint.net crops & resize still looks lacking in some detail, even just now tried the phones camera shot of my laptop screen under a black throw to mute the glare(3rd attachment) will attache in case you have time/interest to help or in case you want send me a better one(?) (Last attached photo os from HTC Sensation 4G advertisement showing home screen)
This is very nice looking

Using nothing more than Accurate Aperture Labs logo, GIMP, and just about all of my free time today, I have created a fresh take on Aperture Laboratories. Turtle tested, Turtle approved. Speed is set to 25, and part0-to-part1 transition is perfect.
Now with Scientific GIF Samples!
part0
part1
By 'Not-Quite-Done' I mean my To Do list is as follows:
1.) Make the animation faster and/or shorter because my phone is a zippy bastard and often starts up before part1 sees the light of day
2.) Add a loading loop at the top-right, identical to the loading circle in the top right corner in Portal 2 loading screens, only instead of the Portal stick figure sticking halfway out it'll be our old pal An Droid.
[Maybe] 3.) Make a separate boot animation dedicated to the great Cave Johnson.
12-11-2011: With the aid of ShockTherapy, I have found The Missing Link. I will now enable human interaction with these particular bytes:
Missing Link
12-12-2011: Check this link for my latest update.
I like the addition of orange. I'm a boot animation junkie and this one just got cooler.
Sent from my BB GPA19x Linux S 4G using xda premium
I spent a lot of time flirting with the Blue/Orange idea. I might be doing a number of color schemes for this same animation, and I will be making two additional sets based around Cave Johnson and Wheatley.
Here's a set of general-purpose lockscreen wallpapers in the meantime:
Black background, orange logo
Black background, blue logo
Blue background, white logo
Blue background, black logo
Orange background, black logo
Orange background, white logo
White background, blue/orange logo
Black background, blue/orange logo
Looks great.
I could make some kind of soft glossy effect on the text.
Also i could make the colors little bit different. (brighter)
Orange looks somehow little bit rusty and blue is to dark imo
Maybe some kind of glow effect like this. xD
I hope to see more great work from you
Believe me, there are six thousand ideas coming up right now, and glowy text was one of them.
I'm also making another couple of animations of GLaDOS (from some awesome vector I found on DeviantArt) and Atlus/Peabody. I might even toss in Space Core somewhere!
Edit: Ultimately, I want the GLaDOS animation to be official-looking so that I can pitch it to Ezekeel as a default boot animation for his GLaDOS kernel.
This is really nice!
where's the download link?
Holy herpaderp! I totally forgot to provide a download link.
I'll add it here as well as the OP. Thanks for that.

Looks like I was able to trim out the fat after all. Here's a sample of my latest update (mind you, the animation doesn't run quite as fast as this GIF):
>>Link to the GIF that actually runs faster than the real product<<

I love this!
Using it on my SGS2 with a sound from here which I converted to .wav
Taking notes from the default CyanogenMod7 bootanimation, the frame doesn't have to be full 480x800; It simply centers whatever's there vertically, and since this particular bootanimation's black, it should blend with no issue. One quick update and it should be running like normal (I know some of you testers probably noticed that the initial animation is skippy at first. This will fix that).
Edit: Minor update, but it's done. Same link as in the OP.
So I'm making a custom animation and I'm wondering whether or not I should use this in it... (Retro Arcade themed)
If so, so I recolor the background black or keep it as is?
(P.S. The image is really big so I can't have it shown here...)

I decided to add it anyways...
The boot animation was going to originally designed just for us, but I figured why not just make it for everyone...
There's no text/images specifying any particular device/version...
Here's a sneak peek of 2 of the frames...
The whole idea of the animation is to "simulate" an old arcade cabinet booting up...
Feel free to give your opinion of it so far...
"Frames" 00 to 20 are done...
All that's left to do is just finish up the "loading" bit, save as a gif and test it...
Just working on this...
Almost done... (Hopefully...)
Oh, what's a good resolution for a boot animation... I don't want this to be too small...
Here's what I did so far... (Not much new... Had no motivation today since my brother stole my phone this morning while I was sleeping...)
All that's left is the timings, and the "now loading" part I need to finish up...
[EDIT]
Just in case, I've doubled the size to 512x512 so far...
Also, if it's too small, would getting it to 768x768 be a better idea... I could use some help on this... It's why I made the thread...
Can I get some help closing/removing this thread please...
I kinda don't it lying around still open and stuff...
