Hi guys,
sorry for a noob question, but is it possible to uninstall HTC Sense? After watching the video of HTC Desire without Sense (can't post a link here, as I'm a new member) I really would like to remove it. I'm using SlideScreen home app anyway, and see no reason to keep it in memory.
I'm using Raidroid 1.1 ROM.
Thanks,
Oleg

Thanks! But it is not exactly what I want. I do want to use SlideScreen as my default Home application. I'm just wondering if it's worth removing HTC Sense completely, so it does not eat up any resources.
I Don't Think You Can Actually Remove It Completely, You Could Always Use A Vanilla Custom Rom Though If you have a rooted hero.. this contains no Sence UI
Hope This Helps
I just use Titanium Backup of the market and you can then just uninstall all the sense stuff & any of the HTC stuff you want, make sure you do a backup of each one you uninstall just incase you keep getting fc, then you can just reinstall it.
I removed everything to do with sense and htc and mine runs fine without any of it. I'm currently using Benhamm's [DEV][2.1 Sense] ALPHA Legendary - HTC Legend WWE Port v1.2[16/03/10]
MAKE SURE YOU DI NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE YOU TRY ANY OF ABOVE AS MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU AS IT HAS FOR ME.
I have the paid version of Titanium Backup.
You can remove Rosie, but it will just clear your homescreen and leave (most of) the other Sense thingies intact.
To do that, run this:
Code:
adb shell
# su
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# mv system/app/Rosie.apk system/app/Rosie.apk.bak
# exit
# exit
adb reboot
I don't know if this is going to cause FC's on other apps though. Iff so, run the same, but switch the two arguments on the mv commands to put it all back to how it was before.

this should be the same for the hero build you are on, but since the last hero build i downloaded was new vision revision 2 for a friends phone, i don't have a more current hero. with that said
it was in data/app_s/HtcLockScreen.apk/res in that folder there are 4 drawables. each of them contains parts to it. i would imagine you could just drop that .apk into another hero rom, sign it, and flash it.
though i would definitely make a nandroid first

thanks, what i actually ended up doing since both lockscreen.apk were the same i figured the "difference" i wanted laid somewhere else so through trial and error i figured it out.
it was the .com.htc.resources.apk from drizzy's rom that made the difference from an ARC lockscreen to a FULL lockcreen.
adb shell rm /system/framework/com.htc.resources.apk
adb shell cp /sdcard/com.htc.resources.apk /system/framework/

a bit pointless to show screenshots of something that is not there. the lockscreen just shows the info that is normally on the arc, but no arc (the png files have been replaced with transparent versions)
Big thanks to the OP. I was doing this myself but didn't know enough adb to get my revised graphics back on to the phone.

AGREED, this just removes the arc from your lockscreen and shows the complete image - leaving just date and time.
I'll post a screenshot later, I guess.

So i unziped it to my sd card, but I can't remember if i put it in the root of my sdcard or if its in /sdcard/downloads, but I don't know the console command to list the directories or files in that folder, i know on ADB/terminal emulator its 'ls'
NVM i figured it out, had to also type mount /sdcard because it kept saying no such file, but mount /sdcard did the trick

dont modify the file in the actual rom - you'll get stuck in a boot loop due to the rom needing to be resigned.

I have a rooted G1 and wondering how i can keep from uninstalling certain 3rd party apps. I have SUFBS installed and thought there was a way to do this within.
Thanks for your help!
What exactly do you mean; you haven't given a scenario where they would be uninstalled, so from the information given, simply do not uninstall them, and they will stay on your phone.
Pardon the lack of detail included in my first post. I want to have certain 3rd party apps behave as system apps, where you are unable to uninstall from the Manage Applications screen. I am thinking that moving these files to the system/apps folder would do the trick. But I've been unsuccessful using SUFSB.
So, to sum it up:
How can I remove the Uninstall option of a 3rd party app from the Manage Applications screen.
I hope there's enough info for some helpful answers.
Thanks to all!
you can try in the recovery console
Code:
mount system
mv /system/sd/appname.apk (or whatever it is called) /system/app/
(if mv doesn't work try cp)
i do not know whether or not that will make them uninstallable or not, but it should do what you are asking about getting them into the /system partition.
Thanks David! Worked like a charm
just don't put to much in /system bc if you do and you flash a rom or theme that puts extra stuff into system it coud result in the rom not loading and you getting a black screen
(like the problem i am having right now of trying to make a theme fit into the confines of the hard spl, i even set one of my phones back to rc-29 and re-rooted so i could test it, ugh... long night)
Thanks once again for your educated response. I will keep that in mind for future use.
Best,
mark
no problem man, just remember if you need to delete anything from /system and don't have a file browser with root access you can do this in the recovery console
Code:
mount /system
rm /system/app/appname.apk
reboot
If you move them to system/app I don't think you'll recieve updates from the market.

here do this, make sure u hit enter after each command
1.su
2.cd /data/app_s
3.ls
look at the list and make sure you type exactly how it is named, if the H in htc is caps the make sure you put Htc
4. rm /data/app_s/HtcClockWidget.apk
It depends on the build you are running. The previous post is correct, unless you are on enomthers TheOfficial ADP1.6. In this case, doing the above will erase it until the next reboot. If this is your build, then you need to go to the terminal and enter
su
expsetup
Choose option 15, and you will then be given the option to remove QO (among other things).

I tried searching for this type of install and couldn't find it. After re-flashing cyanogen 5.0.7 stable, I lost my 3d gallery again. I'm at work right now and don't have access to ADB so I had to figure out how to install this on-the-go, without having double galleries. These instructions can be used in terminal emulator without a system reboot. Make sure to download the attached gallery.apk and place it on the root of your sd card.
Code:
1. su (allows root permission)
2. mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system (make the system folder writeable)
3. rm /system/app/Gallery.apk (removes system Gallery)
4. cat /sdcard/Gallery.apk > /system/app/Gallery.apk (copies 3D Gallery to system)
5. enjoy

Can we use something like linda to install this and keep both galleries?
Yes you can have both galleries if you install using Astro or Linda but you'll get 2 identical galleries and thus arousing identification problems.

on your device it will show two "Gallery" icons/apps. You wont be able to tell which is which because the 3D one wasnt modded and renamed. So you dont have for example seperate "Gallery" and "3D Gallery" labels, you just have two "Gallery" icons. hope that makes sense. if you look around the forums, you can rip out the modded 3D gallery from one of the roms so it can run side by side with the stock gallery and be properly labeled. maybe rip it out of one of cyanogen's old roms when he had them both before he removed the 3d one.

I understand what you mean now, thanks for the explanation. Quick question though since I'm kind of novice at certain things, when you say rip out the modded one, is it as simple as opening up the zip, finding the app, taking it out, and then using Linda or such to install it beside the original? And do you know which test version it was when Cyan stopped using the 3d gallery? Thanks in advance.
Edit: I took the apk from Superbad, but it still had the same icon, do you know a specific rom that has a modded icon?
Edit #2: Nevermind, I was able to find 2 different icon-ed versions. Now just a matter of deciding which one I like most.

Not a problem, glad I could help. I actually find the 3d gallery to be faster than the legacy one for me. I have 1200 images on my phone ( I pretty much site ripped G1-Walls and put it on my SD ) and after the initial boot when it creates its thumbs and other cache files, it flies for me. Plus it looks so damn good!

I used universal androot to root my phone and I want to unroot it. I can't get rid of the superuser permission icon with the skull and crossbones. How can I get rid of that to return my phone back to normal?
The only way I was able to do this was to flash the old ERE27 passimg then the FRF91 Rom. Yes this wipes everything and takes your phone back to stock.
Not sure if anyone else was able to remove the SU icon and app without a full reflash back to the old version.
There has to be an easier way than that.
Get root explorer and go to system/app/superuser delete that is the easiest way

rm is the delete command in linux. /system/app is the directory. Just use terminal and delete the apk. Don't forget to mount the /system/ dir as rw. Google should help you with that.

Do you still have root?
Actually why would you want to unroot?
Tardman
I promise you I went through this all. SU is not an "app" and cannot be removed like any app can. It becomes part of the ROM. As far as I could tell. It wont even go away if you re-flash the stock ROM.
The only way I got rid if it was through installing the passimg from boot so the whole system wiped. Then flashed froyo clean.
Everything else, including all mentioned here, did not work.
And it only takes about 10 minutes to get through the process.

I unrooted. If I just leave it there it doesn't affect anything, right?
I tried to reflash froyo clean, but I kept getting some kind of errors (see my Restore Nexus One for Dummies thread). Oh well.
I want to unroot so that I get all of my over the air updates without any hassles. I thought about jumping ship to the new Cyanogen Mod now that it's a stable release, but I just don't feel comfortable enough messing with the phone like that just yet. I was once where you are. Afraid of messing up my expensive phone.
I followed enough threads. Read enough wikis. Kept up with the Androidâ„¢ blogs, and now?! I'm pretty good at this stuff.
Good enough that I rooted, and flashed a new ROM on a friends EVO today.
Although I DID BRICK IT for a while, I was confidant that I would find the solution on these forums.

The problem with that is, Universal Androot no longer works after the FRG22D update. I forgot to unroot before updating and now universal androot can't unroot nor can I remove the superuser.apk since I'm no longer rooted...even though androot says I am and can't unroot. I guess universal androot is dead because I've been watching for an update and there has been no activity for 2+ months. I only used androot to enable the wireless tether option.

My first post This worked for me after hours of research
Hey I'm new here and wow this forum has ton of information. Thanks all for sharing!
Hope this help!
But for this specific problem (superuser permission icon) won't delete. After hours of looking and trying multiple solutions, only one worked. The other ones deleted it, but as soon as I reformat my phone it would come back. Got this from another forum (travisFC thx!!) and it WORKS!!
I used Z4root (off the market) to re-root, fantastic app!!
1. Re-root your phone (yes make sure your phone is "jailbroke" again) and download an app in the market called Terminal Emulator (its free)
2. Now type the following in the terminal emulator app. One line at a time and pressing enter after each line
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/app
rm Superuser.apk
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
3. Sync phone with google (in the settings). (Not sure what the hell this meant, but sent an email to myself, don't think you need this step.)
4. Reboot phone
5. App should now be gone, but you will probably see the NEW superuser icon (widget)
6. Reapply unrooted OS (Z4root select unroot) and wipe device .
7. Should be unrooted and the app will be gone..you can check your root status by using the Terminal Emulator app and typing "su" it should say permission denied.
FYI - I'm on Rogers Captivate.
Hope this helps...what a headache.
get rid of superuser icon
Want to rid yourself of the superuser icon and be able to take your phone back to provider without worry? Here's how and it's less steps than Thumpers way (no disrespect intended).
1. I'm assuming you have unrooted your phone and just have the annoying su icon.
2. Download z4root from market. root your phone with it. Use the "temporary root" bar.
3. Once rooted go in and out of a few apps, then go back to z4oot and press it. It will ask for superuser permission and say yes.
4. Z4root will open and then tap on the "unroot" bar and that's it. It removes everything including superuser icon.
Enjoy.
By the way I have Galaxy S Vibrant i9000M with 2.1 eclair.
