I have had my Hero for a little over a month and I was trying to make a theme for my Clock Widget tonight using metamorph. I finally got all the folders right and I know it worked, however it deleted my HtcClockWidget. What are the rules on using metamorph on system apps and also if I can't do it that way how do I make an update.zip file with the changes I want.

please someone help me out!!!
i looked at a couple how-to's and guides but still cant figure it out
Yay you want my Rosie haha. Basically everything you wanna change is it framework-res.apk and com.htc.resources.apk in /system/framework
Open the apk's, pull out the res folders, find the images you wanna replace and replace them. Then put the res folder back into the respected apk, and put them into an update.zip and sign it. If you dont know how to do the last part I can do it for you
take the files from the theme elements you like and then replace the ones in the rom youre using with the ones you like. There are many files to edit depending on what you are trying to alter. I suggest editing your own rom before attemting an update.zip theme for us.
Go to market
Download mm, ninjamorph, silver edit, and astro.. While here pick up a random icon pack... (your first morph)
Open silver edit..pick new xml.. Here is a template. Replace the dashes - with less than/greater than < .. They won't show on xda
-?xml version="1.0"?-
-themename-Theme_Name-/themename-
-themeversion-1.x-/themeversion
-screenshot--/screenshot-

Open ninja morph, choose the apk you want to modify.. The images you want to change are in res folder in the drawable dir.. choose the icon and replace it with one out of the icon pack..
Open astro.. Go to android themes.. Make new directory, Theme_Name.. Open the workspace folder..this is where the changed apk is... Copy res folder.. Paste it inside Theme_Name.. Delete everything but drawable... Open the silver edit folder in astro and copy Theme_Name.xml and paste it with your new res folder... You just made a morph on your phone...
Open meta morph..start checks and chose existing... Click Theme_Name and Theme_Name.xml, apply all...
Your original images from your apk are in backup inside android themes...
Thanks stericson for 2 apps..
My phone has been flashed more than Girls Gone Wild..
I can't find silver edit in the market :/ .. i'm starting to think something is wrong with my market because I couldn't find simply lockscreen either.. :/
In the directions it says "Samsung_Vibrant" so is this just for the captivate or can you insert which ever phone you want?

Is metamorph able to put in modified XML files as well? If so, can you explain how this is done? I tried updating some XML files in framework-res.apk via metamorph with no luck...
If i compile + sign my own framework-res.apk, then it works. But i like to use it in metamorph instead so I can change things on the fly.

do you recall where you read it? and is there some sort of workaround? or is it just not possible?
I think I read it in the meta morph topic in the android theme forum..there's another meta morph thread there

Metamorph only replaces files... doesn't add new ones... so if its a new xml going to have to use an update.zip

I did everything by the guide in the first post but when I try to install the theme in metamorph I get the error The theme you selected is invalid because the theme control file could be missing, or is not correctly written.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Ok, so this hasn't really been a problem for me before since I couldn't use the samsung music player at all since it wouldn't sort by artist. However, now that I'm using JM6, it is letting me sort by artist. I really like the widget on the lock screen and on the pull down notification bar, so I'd like to use music player of Mixzing.
The problem is, on both of the widgets the background is an ugly purple color. Why would they do this? Ew. Is there any way to change the background color of these widgets? If I could do that, I would be as close to 100% happy with this phone that I've ever been.
Edit: Nevermind. I got it.
Care to share what you did? I didn't see anything in the settings. My ultimate goal would be to have the widget with a transparent background.

You could do that. The files you need to change are located in the twframework and framework apk's. They are in system/framework, but I just used the twframework file from here. I don't remember the names of the files I changed (sorry). I just searched for music or background or bg in the drawable-hdpi folder of the apk's and when I found the ones I wanted to change, (really the only purple ones) I changed the color to something else. To make it transparent just replace the file (keep the same name) with a transparent .png file.
The twframework file can just be edited and then copied back over the original, but the framework apk caused a lot of force closes on me when I tried that. So I just edited the files inside the circle clock.zip file and then ran the .zip file and it applied the changes for me without any problems.
I also changed the ugly pink icon to something that looks like a real cd in the background with an orange music note on top. Looks a billion times better.
I apologize that I can't be more technical with you, if you have any questions about anything shoot me a pm or post it up here.

Strange, I couldn't get this to work...here are the steps i took:
Used adb push to get the twframework-res.apk file to my PC.
Used APK Manager to unzip the APK.
Modified the purple background file (quick_panel_music_bg.9.png) to be transparent.
Used APK Manager to zip the APK using the new PNG file. (I only Zipped the APK, I did not sign it since it was a system APK and did not Zipalign it)
Dropped the APK on the root of my sdcard.
Used Busybox to copy it over the existing APK.
Rebooted.
Any ideas why this wouldn't work? I tried twice, both times the background is still purple.
Hmmm, I went back and looked at the framework-res.apk and noticed i missed a file in there with purple background, so i edited that PNG file, then used APK Manager to zip and then ADB to copy over the original.
Now my phone will boot only to the Galaxy S boot screen, then just goes black. Looks like I will need to adb the backup files back onto the phone. Can you explain how you did this using an update.zip file. That seems like maybe an easier route.
when changing the twframework file I used 7zip to open the archive without ever unzipping the file. I dragged the already edited png files into the correct directory to replace the purple ones.
For the update.zip I downloaded the .zip file for thecircle battery mod. I then put the updated png files that I wanted to replace using 7 zip again. I ran the update.zip file and everything worked.
If you are able to use metamorph (using older su version) you can download the simplistic theme, replace the res files with the ones from the stock apks then apply them in metamorph.
Is it possible? I love the theme. Particularly in the notification pull-down thing with the wifi icons and such.
They are just png images in the framework. Depending on what other rom you are wanting to use it on you may be able to just swap out the framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk in /system/app. Otherwise you can just move the images into the new rom framework files (the ones used are in /res/drawable-hdpi usually). You might be interested in learning to create metamorph zip files as well.
Thank you. However, I extracted the framework-res.apk and I have found some image files, but I see none that are pull-down icons like the GPS, Wifi, Auto-rotate icons. Any help?
Not sure what you mean by metamorph.
Because they're not there.
They're in twframework-res.apk. And you have to edit the status_bar_expanded.xml to get rid of the text.
It is essentially "Gingerbread" with some minor tweaks.
The only issue you might have is when you copy all of the images out of the framework-res.apk -> drawable-hdpl folder that your menu buttons might be a little off. Unless you start out with a Dark theme that has already adjusted the menu to have a black background and white text...
I think there is a Gingerbread theme in the Theme/App forum that would be close to what your looking for.
I was trying to do a MetaMorph for this type of theme but I could never get the *.xml edits needed to overwrite using MetaMorph correctly. (Check the Q&A Sticky for MetaMorph)
... It can be done but it'd be a little more complicated
Okay, I am still trying to understand. I extracted the twframework-res.apk and took out the files from the Assonance theme. I extracted the twframework-res.apk from another theme that I liked, and replaced the Assonance parts I like into it. Now, can I just zip it back up and rename it to .apk? I'm not really sure what to do now.
Thanks for your help so far!

I dont mean to look for the easy way out but ive searched and cannot find exactly what i am looking for. I want to turn my AOKP theme into a flashable zip and im not sure where to start.
Ive already edited the pngs, .9 pngs, and xmls i want and turned out a pretty nice red theme with full colored icons. I used the common apks; contacts, phone, systemui, settings, and framework-res. Where do i go from here?
I have found some threads saying you use the entire apk and just copy it into another theme, but im looking to do it from scratch. Also, that doesnt seem right to copy the entire apk over because that would overwrite any changes made in the nightlies. Wouldnt you just take only the drawables, values, etc out and make that the theme?
thanks for any help.
