Why is the black part of the screen touch sensitive? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Instead of just making the bottom part where the capacitive buttons lay have their own sensors (or along the lines of something like this) why did HTC make all of the phone capable of touch? This small factor right here contributes to touch screen issues - for those whosr hands may need more room. If even one piece of skin is too close to the phone, it can result in aggravation.. though luckily I don't hold my phone like this.
Was this necessary?
Im sure plenty of you here know something about this..

Totally agree. It's a pain not being able to do simple tasks with one hand.

Why is the Kaiser's screen like this?

When I first ordered my tilt, immediately after I had the fear that the screen would be like most other PDA screens - they get "depressed" when you push them in, they feel plasticy, and they go "weird" when you press on them even slightly hard. To my dismay, the phone WAS like this! A perfect example of a good screen would be the fuze, iPhone, and the at&t quickfire. The screens feel solid, and glassy. Why doesn't the Kaiser have this?
Good Question. Id suggest writing HTC Please let us know what they say

Simple. Don't do that. There's zero problem with the Tilt screen otherwise. Light touches, moderate touches, swipes, finger, stylus, all are fine. Of course this is referring to the digitizer. What you're referring to could be a mix of both I suppose.
I don't *poke* LCDs, it's just a bad idea.

Digitizers like the one used on the Kaiser work by having a soft layer that when touched will warp and touch a 2nd layer slightly below it, which will sense the touch and allow finding the coordinates.
The newer screens like on the iphone use another touch sensing process, but those are very new (the iphone was the first portable device to use one AFAIK), and are only becoming widespread in the current generation - i.e. the one AFTER the Kaiser.

He means that even with the stylus or barely touching with the finger the digitizer will slightly "deform", which you can easily see if watching a reflection on the screen and touching it, and the related softness. It's normal and he isn't abusing it.

Is this normal?!

Hey everybody. I've been using my Xperia for about 2 months now. However, while messing around with it the other day, I realized that it's kind of shaky. For example, if i "press" against the silver finish all the way to the right of the screen, the top part of the phone shakes a little (like it moves kind of inward). Also, when I press the bottom right soft key, the same thing happens. It shakes a little, and it's not too big of a deal but it's annoying.
Another thing is that the keyboard also slides out very easily. Like way too easily. While using the touchflo 3d with one finger (sliding to the right), for instance, unless my finger is completely dry and moving on the screen very smoothly, the screen moves to the right slightly (the way the keyboard opens).
Also, when the keyboard is out, if i "press" towards the top part of the screen, it also shakes. It feels kind of loose.
I just wanted to know, is this normal? If not, what should I do, as I bought this phone from ebay.
Other than this problem, I love my Xperia. It's very functional and like a mini PC. If it wasn't for this place, though, I think I would have probably been VERY, VERY dissatisfied with my Xperia (with the stock rom).
Thanks in advance. Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: My phone is a silver, Xperia X1i model.
I don't think that's normal. Do you tend to slide out your keyboard a lot? Have you noticed any cracks near the stylus btw?
Holy-!
How much force are you using on the screen?! My slider is exceedingly solid. Absolutely no give, and even if I use TF3D it doesn't move.

I think that's out of normal
My Black X1 has about 1mm play, on the left side. On the right side it is less, but it can be felt, exactly as you mention.
As for opening, I have no problem with that, it gives just reasonable resistance.
i try to peat as least pressure as possible while using tf3d. i also dont slide out my keyboard THAT much. and no, no cracks near stylues.
apparently, this is not normal. any advice?
redo the screen calibration, now applying as LITTLE force as you can to get the press registered, and try again. Xperia has some sort of vario force meter on the touchscreen - the more force you use during calibration, the more force you need during normal usage.
another issue i have with my phone (not hardware related) is the fact that when i use high quality on my youtube app, watching the video is sooooooo laggy. is there any fix for this
It's a limitation of the current app, most likely it's incapable of taking advantage of the native hardware decoding the MSM7200/7201/7200A/whatever chipset offers.

Selfmade case

I always wanted to modify original case from HTC HD2 (one from original package) because even if I like it very muck it has some flows:
- When somebody is calling me I must struggle to take the phone out without answering by mistake on that call.
- When I wanted to check what time it is, it was faster to ask somebody else instead of taking my phone from my pocket in this winter cold (-200 C)
- Because of low temperature I have to keep my phone inside mi jacket to have normal battery life but my clothes don't have inside pockets because if you open the jacket will get cold inside. Because of this I have to make that case hang on my neck, very close by it to allow me to have access to it without opening to much of my jacket zip.
- I was thinking to make a hole in the back of case to be able to use flash light from back of device like a torch (With TorchButton thancks xda-develover) because now in winter when is dark big part of afternoon and I find myself using this feature very often.
- I needed protection for my phone because now even if I love this devices I am a very careless owner and scratches and droppings are a question of "when" rater that "if" I drop down or scratch my expensive device.
So i star from thinking of making of two holes in original case of device one in the front for screen and one in the back for light. But then I thought if I make a mistake I will ruin this case wick is quite expensive to buy again. And because of this I stat to make a completely new one.
And here is the result of that work:
Please ignore bad finishing on some parts but this is a "prototype" and I never done this before but i may stick with it because I am very happy with it (very practical).
Advantages:
- Protection against scratches.
- Protection against droppings of device on some hard surfaces (corner are the Achilles heel for his device because of glass surface). Bottom corners have a wicker protection like the top ones.
- Possibility to hang the device in a lot of places because of that clipping system.
- Clip is placed in the right position on the bottom of device not in the top like normal manufacturers do. In this way when you have the device hanging on neck or belt loop and you lift the device to see the screen you don't need to turn it upside down (I don't need for others to see correct position of the screen but to see it myself). Also is more comfortable when you have the phone near your ear for a conversation.
- I make this case very tide on my phone and now I keep it without battery cover an I can make a soft reset any time thru the case with that little red reset button without straggling to remove the phone from the case or remove (again struggling) the battery cover. Plus now device is locking almost as slick like it was looking naked.
- I didn't make a hole were the light sensor is and is locking like this is affecting responsivity of auto light on the device but my battery now it seems to last more so I consider this an advantage. Proximity sensor is working fine in phone kavas.
- Unrestricted access to all functions of the device without need to remove it from the case. Exceptions MicroSD card, battery and SIM but this ones I never touch them on my previous device (HTC HD) in a year of use.
- Some kind of organic feeling on touching this device now because of soft leather imitation, very pleasant.(I don't want natural leather).
- Almost free. Concept and cutting of material is made by me and sowing by my wife. Materials I have fond some lying around in my house from some project of my wife.
Disadvantages:
- Transparent plastic protecting the screen is making a lot of bubbles when it sticks against it, making the screen to look ugly when is turned off (see pictures). I am thinking to a solution now (suggestions appreciated).
- Hole for front speaker absent (will be made soon)
This is not a commercial project I made this case for myself and I will like to hear from you any comment or suggestions.
P.S. Sorry for my English is not my firs language and on school it wasn't my strong point.
Well done! it is a pretty impressive effort, though I am not 100% convinced about leaving the battery cover off all the time. Still youve done a great job
I can put battery cover back any time but you know that problem when this phone is refusing to go on? In this situation I just reset it with a pencil thru "leader" of case. Otherwise is an entire ritual do get the phone out and I need a plastic object to remove the cover (no fingers nails). So you get furious because you thought you have a working phone but in reality is a dead phone for God knows how long and now you must perform evisceration ritual. Not for me I just use one of my small key to pres reset button, think something about their mothers (of HTC guys) a move along hoping nobody was calling me in this time.
well done, great satisfaction when doing your own thing....... UNIQUE
Great job even for a prototype.

Nexus One hardware issue.

ok it doenst happen when i lay the phone down on the surface and click on the screen it works perfectly
however when i hold it with my right hand and touch the middle of the screen with my thumb
it opens up phone dialer, or appdrawer or vibrante cause it clicks the capacitive button.
when i hold it with my left hand it gets a little bit better but it still does.
if i hold the nexus carefully and touch the screen , it works, when i hold it like this
the things gets better when i put a thick case like otterbox..
is this a hardware issue? ( found similar video on youtube)
my phone is rooted but can i still get a replacement phone?( already put everything back to stock)
and if i do get a replacement, are they going to charge me with anything?
my current nexus one trackball doenst scroll up but everything else works.
How many of you guys got a replacement even though your phone was rooted?
Make sure part of your hand doesn't touch the screen.

it's a hardware issue...
all you can do is not grip the phone too closely to the edge of the screen. It registers touches even if you are not touching the screen completely. But that to be a problem you have to have giant hands
I've had this happen to me once since I had it from launch day. It did happen with my Otterbox commuter series, and a clarivue screen protector. But I turned it off and on again and it was fine.
anyway as stevio jobsio whould say, you're holding it wrong

ok so it is a hardware issue?
no i am not touching any part of the screen. i made sure i wasnt touching the screen.
but it does happen when i hold my phone closely to the edges.
i never had this kind of issues with other touch screen phones..
Well I dunno... One finger at a time and your good to go unless you got fat hands lol

I can confirm that my device too does this. When lying in bed I browse the net with one hand and try and scroll....the edges of the touchscreen seem to register depression when the chassis is pushed or gripped too hard also.
It's a minor irritation to me, but I agree it is a hardware issue.

[Q] heres one for you dust guys

ok so i was wondering (if you have the dust under the screen) if your hero will it select what you press and hit random things like when you press o it types something so off like x42 or something like that and im wondering because i want to know if its that or my touch screen going bad
That sounds pretty unlikely, since it is a capacitive touchscreen. Unless the dust is drawing away the charge around these areas, I'd say your touchscreen is knacked.
Have you tried doing a touchscreen calibration? (under language & keyboard, if I recall correctly)
