Wow, they finally got around to basic functionalities after three years. Functionalities that Symbian and WinMo were doing since forever. Very revolutionary and magical. Color me awed.
Just about the only thing Android needs to do to "catch up" is a better multi-tasking UI. Then again, considering the iPhone OS 4.0 will handle a grand total of seven tasks--as opposed to Android showing the last six apps used--well...

So the iPhone OS 4.0 contains what's currently available for jailbroken iPhones, and adds interactive advertising...

Yes, Apple just ripped off a bunch of features from Android, which will undoubtedly drive iSheep sales up.
ohhh! a bunch of stuff that almost every other phone already has... android, winMo, WebOS...

Nope, you're not. However for the masses, this update will be very well received. Yes its ridiculous that they took so long to incorporate multitasking and folder functionality, but better late than never.
I was disappointed that there wasn't any interface change, the icon grids seem archaic. The iBook app will be huge. Overall, I think this is what most people were expecting in terms of a software update. The real big news will be whether a hardware update will accompany OS4 (unibody iPhone would be nice).
For now the Nexus still has an edge but the gap is narrowing

Yeah. I was thinking of the big things they could do on the hardware side, but I'm not entirely sure they want to split their market up. People are still using the iPhone 3G, if they do a massive upgrade on hardware, app developers will have to verify it works on 3 different platforms.
Maybe they are just planning on phasing out the 3G completely by next year (considering they were hinting at the lesser features for 3G's OS4), and then using the current 3GS as minimum spec. If they increase screen resolution, they'll have to write some scaling processes as well (a lot can be seen in the iPad)
They dropped the bomb until they put this dud out.
I own a bunch of Apple devices and Ive had an iPhone before. Im not a hater, I just dont think it's cutting edge anymore. I even have an iPad so you can't say Im an apple hater
Is just another iPhone... but still Google needs to get their act together in a few areas. I borrowed a N1 for few days and like it very much, but I have been reluctant to take the plunge because of the following shortcomings:
Google needs to allow Contacts, Tasks and Notes to sync to the N1 (locally and remotely) using Google apps. It also needs to either enhance the Calendar application or make it play nice with Outlook desktop calendar functions. Me and whole bunch of other people I know, are very comfortable with Outlook to manage their email, time, contacts and tasks. Help us migrate to Android and to the Google apps without so much fuzz. Don't leave it to third parties. I don't want to risk my critical data to a vendor that is here today, but might not be here tomorrow. I'm not very happy leaving all my critical data in the cloud, but if I'm going to do it... Google needs to help me get there. Security and the integrity of my data are important. I have confidence in Google, but not on third party vendors for this critical step.
The Music Player needs enhancement and a Google desktop application to manage one's Music Library and multiple playlist is needed. Most decent portable DAP have such application. Maybe Google can partner or acquire a vendor that knows how to do this right.
Just like the new iPhone the inbox of Android needs to be bit more friendly with other email service providers. As with the new IPhone OS 4, multiple Exchange servers should be supported along with the option to have multiple and merged inboxes.
I wonder if others feel the same way. I also know that there are other issues that need to be addressed, but in my case the top two are very important.
The soul purpose of this device is not meant to be a music player, Google does not (and I highly doubt they will) need to create an entire desktop application to move mp3s to the music folder where anyone with the right direction can do this. Managing playlist though is a different story, but I guess it is up to a third party application to do this.
Get a ipod or other portable music device if this is your wish.
Also, tamanaco, I believe Sense does most of what you said. Don't believe the Nexus is a very friendly business device...

I agree with you in that there's no need for them to boost their specs at this point, but I was referring more to a cosmetic facelift. The iPhone has pretty much looked the same for 3 years now and I think even Apple fanboys can agree that everyone is tired of the design.

So, if I understand you correctly... The N1 is "not" a Music Player... is "not" meant for business... and as you say is "not" for me. So, in your book it's only good to make calls and find yourself on a map? It's called a "Superphone"... What's else is it good for?

This is not an excuse IMO, the music player definitely needs an update. This is the one area where iPhone has a real advantage over Android. Most users would rather carry one device for everyday use, I know I certainly would.

It's been how many years since the release of the HTC tornado? 3 or 4 years? Back when I had my sda.. when I pictured 3 or 4 years into the future I expected much better gaming. I pictured Full speed GBA, maybe even PS1. The performance has not improved in 3 or 4 years now! it's goten worse! I think the only reason why the iphone is better is because HTC is making it look good. If HTC would have continued to progress in performance we'd probably be matched or better than the iphone.
That's just my take on it lol.
While the WM platform is more oriented towards the business department, the iPhoney is more oriented towards the young, "hip" generation. I personally say the iPhone is good at what it doesn, and if somehow, someone, hacked it and got tf3d and winmo apps running on it, I'm sold. The OS is just built so muc hbetter. But it bugs me that people want the iPhoney interface >.> I mean it's just a fancy application launcher with big round shiny buttons. What's so cool about that?

Absolutely agreed. the WinMo platform has had GREAT gaming potential since 2004 (the intel 2700g-based x50v). Too bad Microsoft / HTC didn't bother making the platform a viable gaming platform for games developers. This is why iPhone has blown out of the water the entire WM platform when it comes to gaming.
Well let me throw my 2-3 pence in.....
I recently purchased a iPhoney for my oldest son. And one of the rules of him having it is daddy gets to play with it....... to evaluate it of course. My original assessment of the phone from when it first came out hasn't changed. Neither platform (iPhone or WM) is better than the other. The iPhone is far better at being a "toy" and WM is far better at being a "tool". Whose hands you put either phone in determines which one will be better than the other. In my hands (where I need my phone to work like a laptop) an iPhone may be fun to play with, but it just won't cut it in the functionality I need on a daily bases. Put a WM phone in my son's or wife's hands (where all they care about is ease of use, email/texting, music/video, web surfing, games) it is far too complicated for them to ever make full use of the phone.
No doubt the iPhone is one kick ass phone for what it was designed to do. And that is to fulfill the wants of the simple minded masses with the before mentioned functions. The iPhone has the edge in those categories. Some of the things I need in a phone and the iPhone lacks:
1. No bluetooth A2DP
2. No way to explore files
3. No seperate keyboard
4. No native support for Office docs
5. No native way to shoot video
6. No MMS
7. No tethering
8. No USB memory simulation
9. No copy/paste
10. No multi tasking of apps
11. No removable battery
12. No replaceable memory card
I'm with some of the rest of you guys when it comes to iPhone fan bois/gurlz. They completely bought in to Job's "revolutionary" hype so much it makes me gag. Of course there are your WM fanners, but they are not so much the "sheeple" like the Apple lovers.

Blah! NOOO! Read this first! By Steve Davis of ppcmobility. Btw, I'm 16 too and I find out that the Fuze is still much better than my friends' iPhones.
Top 10 reasons iPhone is not good.
Time for my list. I’ll start backwards… well in order… at 10. Well.... 9 is good for iphone users
10. iPhone(Apple) users. Don’t get me wrong. I like people, but iPhone people and Apple people are their own breed. They always think that Macs are the best, Apple is the best company ever and the iPhone is the best thing since sliced bread. They will push the iPhone on you until you hate everything Apple. This includes you Walt Mossberg. Apparently for the price you get one iPhone and a few pounds of smug to carry around with you. When the iPhone 3G came out I had to keep checking my phone to make sure I really did have 3G for years because the way it was advertised I was certain they were releasing something so new to the market I couldn’t have had it already.
9. Applications made free for iPhones. I can go over a lot of applications that come out for iPhone that are free and good, but were out for Windows mobile for years beforehand and were not free. Shazam is out on Android and iPhone for free. They came out with a program called “TagIt” in 2006, but that has disappeared and they only have the service for iPhone and Android or for people in the UK(no offense, US gets stuff first 9 times out of 10). Pandora! Free for iPhone and its BIG NEWS, but its been out for Windows Mobile for a while, but you had to pay, which is not cool. I’m sure there are more out there, but I cant think of them right now. Those are the 2 big ones.
8. Cut and Paste. BGR is right, this is a big problem. Just because the Macs dont have mice with 2 buttons doesn’t mean you need to cripple your iPhone to not be able to copy and paste! (I know you can right click NOW but that’s kind of new).
7. 1 word, Flash. Skyfire has recently given Windows mobile users the benefit of Flash websites. I’d expect the best phone in the world to do the same. Flash mobile has been out for a while, but what sites recognize flash lite 3.1 or mobile 7? And Safari is constantly touted as the best browser. The numbers are simple - SkyFire loads WebPages much faster than Safari plus you get the real internet (yeah, with Flash, etc). Oh and congrats iPhone you finally have more choices.
6. Non-Replaceable battery. Now sure, the iPhone battery will last FOREVER, but what if it doesn’t? What if I want more than the 5 hours of 3G talk time Apple specs out? What if i want a high-capacity battery without cracking it open or putting a strange case on it? Given most phones will get thicker with a bigger battery, but you don’t have to void your warranty or use a case you don’t want to use. This really goes to the core of how Apple makes money. The original Mac cases could not be opened so you would be forced to buy a new computer and there was no ‘upgrading’. The iPods also have a non-replaceable battery. The reason is simple - when the battery dies this forces you to buy the newest version and since everyone loves Apple they shell out more money ever year for a slight upgrade. This may also explain why other items on this list are here; it gives Apple a reason to release iPhone v3. And don’t even get me started on the proprietary plug instead of mini-USB which is now becoming standard for PDA’s
5. Multitasking. There is some misconception about this and theiPhoneBlog has a good write-up about it and the deal is that Apple only allows its own apps(mail, phone, etc) to multitask. 3rd party apps cant. I’ll get into that in #4.
4. Install whatever i want without jailbreak. So with Windows Mobile, not only can i edit the registry, but I can install WHATEVER I WANT without jailbreaking my phone and potentially bricking it. I find it hard to believe that they can demand the price they do and lock your device entirely and not get heat for it. If Windows did the same thing they would get destroyed for it.
3a. The Screen. I hate hearing that the iPhone has such a beautiful screen. Guess what? I can see pixels. All of them. If I pick up my Fuze I don’t see any thanks to the glory that is VGA. I’m sure Apple will release a VGA screen and then I’ll hear all of the media hype about how it’s the sharpest screen ever even though we all know the Touch HD has the same dimensions with a higher resolution.
3b. The User Interface. The user interface of the iPhone is merely an application launcher and if you want more than that or a different look then Apple will tell you to look elsewhere or wait for their next latest and greatest release. It is literally nothing more than a page of shortcuts and people love the simplicity and entire lack of actual interface. And the intentional minimalist look for the iPhone (with a single hard button) also breeds this inefficiency. If you’re in an application and want to use the phone there’s no ‘phone’ button. You have to go home then launch the phone.
2. Customization of icons/themes/skins/BACKGROUND again without jailbreak. Just about every phone on XDA has a thread for “post your today screen”. For the iPhone, those forums need to be in the jailbreak sections. How hard would it be to make it standard to be able to have custom icons and skins? And changing the background was one of the bigger gripes I had when looking for a phone. It may not sound like much, but I want to do what I want to do. Why do I need to conform to what Apple wants? The name iPhone is a misnomer. It should be Steve’s Phone because he found some settings he likes and told you to like them too
1. MMS. Why cant i sent a MMS to my friends who have iPhones? When I ask them, they just say “email it to me”. Well I don’t want to. I can MMS pictures to my other friends, I’m not going to make an exception for my iPhone friends. You CAN get a MMS app for the iPhone, but you need to again Jailbreak it and then you’re good to go.
These reasons alone weren’t why I got the Fuze, but they did help in the long run. Hopefully you weren’t swayed by the hype and advertising like everyone else. What’s #1 on your list?
And if you are interested in what an iPhone can do when you jailbreak it, check out this link wouldn’t it be nice if it could do some of that right out of the box? Like a Windows Mobile phone?
Let the bashing begin…

Oh wait - I got that stupid smudge of doom and massive realignment problem on my Touch.
Touchphones are clearly still in their early days.
well, i have my iphone 3g for about 4 months now, while most of the glorious why iphone is not good list does not apply to me... with the exception of flash and UI, i am pretty happy with it. iphone comes with a lot of features i dont need to hunt down in WM, and a lot of interesting apps after it is jailbroke (seriously, if you can handle a WM, jailbreaking iphone should be a no-brainer process). i can safely say i probably wont get another WM device unless WM7 is significantly better than WM6.1, but i definitely wont get the next iphone... if theres a next one... back to symbian i guess...
I was just wondering if anyone has heard any more information on this app.
http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/app.html?id=11
It has been floating around for a couple of months now but i cant seem to find any more info on when this might come out.
It looks like a fun app to play around with and see how your car performs

Im not sure on the accelerometer & GPS v the iPhone but the iPhone does have a dyno app and i have seen video comparisons of their Dyno app v a dedicated unit and every time the app won out over the dedicated unit.
Im not saying that it will be exactly the same but to me its promising.

I retract my previous statement, but we'll c how it comes out, hopefully the same or better
might be waiting for paid apps. if this thing is as good as Dynolicious for the iphone then its definatly going to be worth paying for.
i agree, if this thing is as good as Dynolicious then i would definitely pay for it. Hope it wont be much longer now, as the market is accepting paid apps.
Thats awesome. Hope we have that soon.
just for reference, i have used a mobile dyno device a long time ago, and it was pretty accurate.
if you want spot on results go to a shop with a dyno.. but it gave a very good estimation for a 200$ device back in the day
it more of something fun to find out.
And if its as good as the iPhone version than it will be really accurate.
Plus i wouldnt even think about spending 200 on something like that, if i can get something for 10

If you make a statement like this, then obviously you're not a car guy, not even with that screen name.
Yeah, it would be a "cool" app, but if someone was to quote me their engine power based on the reading from a phone (G1, iPhone or otherwise), I would laugh.
a nice dyno app would be better if you have fuel management hardware. there is a system called megasquirt which you can build the hardware from scratch and download their application to tune the engine. i think its open source so it should have the source code and it can possibly ported to the g1, im not an expert. just know how to use a dyno and an engine management system. just integrate an android device with megasquirt or aem, or greddy emanage it would be a nice combo. so there would be no need for a laptop. too bad im not a programmer.

Im just not a guy who wants to waste money. Going off the video i posted in this thread the iPhone version was more accurate.
so i wouldnt care if the dedicated unit was the same price id still go with the one that was more accurate.
If i can spend $10 on an app for my phone have it more accurate than a dedicated unit and easer to setup and use with multiple cars. I know which ones a winner for me

Problem is the HP data it displays is pretty much useless. Sure it can show you what your MAX HP is, but it won't show you Torque output and what's most important your power curves. Max power is useless unless you know WHERE your max power is in your RPM range. Dyno tuning is used for more then showing off big numbers, its used for tuning your engine where and when you want that power to come into play to suit your style of driving and the kind of racing you're doing. For engine tuning stick to a real dyno.
Now, as for the other data such as 0 - 60, braking, turning G's, etc etc. THAT data I find useful because combined with google maps of the track you can help yourself identify where you made mistakes and to better tune your suspension.
Ron,
Good point with using with on the track to find your weak spots.
I didnt even think of this.
To be honest i was thinking of it more of a toy to mess around with, with a few mates.

I wouldnt call it useless, obv if they want to tune their car, and/or want to know their curves theyd jus go dyno their car. The app is for the people who just want to know what the app tells u. Its not replacing an actual dyno

Oh that I know, but you know as well as I do that there will be some wannabe dyno-queen ricer that would think otherwise. I rather lay out reality on the table before anyone who doesn't know what they're doing comes back whining about how its such a horrible app because they blew their motor trying to net 300+ hp out of their poorly tuned honda while trying to get a base-line on some back road.

of course the iPhone would have a keyboard...who thinks this will happen within the next 10 years (2009-2019) for the iPhone line of phones?
Edit: When I said "of course the iPhone would have a keyboard" I meant that if the iPhone was a slider a phone, than of course I am talking about an iPhone with a qwerty keyboard...not a dial pad....not like an N95 but something more like a Touch Pro
as a follower, they should prepare to have it
i doesnt really matter even if they attach some xtrange keyboard is just one thing i never but never matters to me
No, will not happen
I don't think there will be a slider phone from Apple, simply becaise the designs of the Iphone won't allow sliding extras. The design of the phone was always based on looking solid and out of one piece, like it's the case with the Imac, Iphone and Ipod. I rest my case
Even if they do, it will still be crap. Anyways, I don't believe there will be iPhails in 2019.............
EDIT: It looks like in my blind hatred I forgot to answer the question.
I think it is the next logical step. iPhail users can be easily satisfied, but many people have switched to devices with a physical keyboard. Pre, Xperia, N97 and so forth offer much more flexibility and I will not even mention the endless stream of messaging phones. I bet that crApple will try to tap that market and the only way to do that is to add a keyboard. Advancements in haptics will not compensate for the lack of one.
Haha look at this:

Iphone will never have a hardware keyboard because they're all abut touch and so on plus the iphone looks boring in design since they all look alike i bet the only difference between the iphones now and the distant future ones will be the thickness.
Yup I dont think so neither

Really
Nope, don't think it will ever happen
The concept of Iphone does not allow additions or protruding parts. Besides, the latest trends indicate shift towards keyless or full qwerty full touch large screen devices and Iphone is already there. They will improve functions and OSX, adding a video call and other gadgety things, but will not add a keyboard in any shape or form. They don't even want an external one used, that's something to ponder.
In 10 years we won't even remember Iphone, we'll have the next best thing - a cellphone inbuilt into our brans with calls made by voice and answered by blinking twice or pulling on the ear. Or better still - we'll genetically modify our future progeny to be born with a cellphone already growing in the brain and attached to the eye, so that any e-mails, txt messages, photos and movies are downloaded and viewed automatically and video calls can be made clicking your tongue

minor inconveniences.
back on topic... the IPhone will probably never receive a built in keyboard. but i am sure small external ones will appear eventually with Bluetooth being opened up.
Apple will likely release an overly expensive bluetooth keyboard that the masses will buy because it looks good and works only with the iPhone.

Doubtful , Apple doesn't do accessories, not enough of a profit margin.
They are more likely to come out with a tablet that makes phone calls.

then i bet the fact that XDA-developers.com owns Iphone-developers.com must be really unsettling.
I'll probably get a lot of hate for this, but after 10 years of being an avid Android fan and supporter, I have moved back to iOS and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
All I can say is I don't regret it one bit. I was the first to make fun of iPhone users in the past, but Apple have made such strides, it's a real pleasure to be back. Yes Apple wait years to implement features that have been available on Android for ages and call it new and revolutionary, but what they do, they do better than anyone else. The biggest thing is just the cohesiveness between the hardware and software. Everything works flawlessly together and the user interface looks great.
What has annoyed me with Android are things like manufacturers not having their own email or messaging apps. You're forced to download a third party app which never really feels in tune with the particular phone/skin/version of Android. And yes you can say the Gmail app is the stock Android email app, but not everyone is a fan, including me. I know it's probably unavoidable due to nature of AOSP, but still, there is a clear divide between the hardware and software for the most part compared to iOS.
The other thing that stopped me using (and mocking) iOS is the fact that a lot of things were a pain in the backside to do and the general incompatibility with a lot of platforms. That seems to have changed as well as I had no issues connecting directly to my NAS drive and Windows PC to access all my files, either while on the same LAN or through 5G when I'm not at home. Youtube Vanced (now ReVanced) was another big thing, but you have options in iOS for that as well.
App tracking was another reason I made the switch. You can simply disable app tracking for all apps with one toggle and all newly installed apps will abide by this as well. Yes, no one really knows if it stops all tracking in its entirety, but it's an option that is not available in Android. You can use a third party app like Blokada to achieve the same result, but you cannot run a VPN service at the same time. Now I can run my VPN service and have app tracking blocked at the same time. Not to mention battery life. I am not a super heavy user, but I get three days out of a single charge with 20% battery left. Even with heavy use, you will struggle to kill this thing's battery in a day as you get 10-14 hours of screen on time depending on how you use it. Standby drain is also nonexistent, the bane of so many Android users' lives, mine included. The cameras and especially video recording is also top notch. Possibly a little boring compared to some of the features you get in Android, but as an everyday point and shoot device, it's hard to beat.
Notifications is the one thing where I would say I still prefer the way it's done in Android, but with everything else working so well I can forgive that. Price is another drawback as Apple charge ridiculous amounts for their hardware, so this is the only time in 10 years where I will keep the same phone for more than a year.
I will still keep my Pixel and have it as a backup phone, but for now I am super happy I made the switch. And I will understand it if not many of you agree.

Actually, that's a rather self-indulgent/pompous comment to assume that "we" don't care. "You" might not care but I'm glad to hear about the experiences of people that have had both Android and Apple products. I've had Windows mobile phones and am now going on my 4th or 5th Android device, but I've never had an Apple product. I'm very much interested in the point of view of somebody that has lived with both products.
