UPDATE: here's the 0.10.0.4 version It works with 2.1 and I've received and made calls successfully. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6216081&postcount=31
Just noticed on aTrackDog that someone is running a new version of 'skype on 3' version 0.10.0.4!!!!!
Own up who's got it? Does it work on 2.1? Can we be furnished with an apk?
Please i want to get my skype back!!!
(sorry for posting this in the main android app area too, but i thought it was a valid reason to post here as well due to three only selling hero in the UK and it would be useful here too. Mods feel free to slap my wrists and delete a post if i've been naughty)

Skype Lite?
wouldn't standard Skype Lite 1.0.0.5 be good enough? I have it running on Hero just fine...

HI Xaaran,
Skype Lite uses your plan minutes to make an outgoing local call to connect to your skype contact. where as skype on 3 is a free call.
This one works, its the latest updated version.

Just what I've been looking for. Does this only work in UK or is it working in rest of Europe aswell?

@mattyguy, which 2.1 ROM are you using??
ATM I'm using VillainROM 5.2: RELEASE CANDIDATE
linky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654030
But as long as your on the 3UK network in theory it should work on any 2.0/2.1
(may possibly work on foreign 3 networks, NB: doesn't work in Ireland, see original thread).

So, I've been looking for a way to control your hero with your voice, like you can with the iPhone 3GS, where you can do just about anything by just telling it to do it.
Ofc i've searched an googled, but the only thing i find is "google talk / google voice" which AFAIK is a sort of IP phone which uses Internet to call with your special google number, which apparently is very cheap(closed beta though)..
anyway, is there an app for talking to your phone to make it do stuff?
I think i've seen a movie somewhere on the Internet where a guy speaks to a android devise and the phone types exactly what he said into a SMS Message without any wrongs... anyone else know about this?

I'm not sure but I think what your asking is in Android 1.6 check out the link below and you should see voice action start at 1:05 in the video.

Thank you, thats exactly what I was looking for
However only one part.. You know of a app that types what you say in like SMS and other textfields?(Or is this embedded with Android 1,6?)
When is the 1,6 release anyway?
1.6 is already out. We're waiting for someone to cook the ROM to be use in the Hero. The Sprint HTC Hero comes with 1.6.

Android 1.6 is being released for all Android phones starting last week. The new phones coming out should be or will be released with the newest rom available, thats why in this case HTC hero for Sprint is 1.6. The Hero is not due out until the 11th of Oct. i think, Android 1.6 is just the rom that was available for this phone.
The Speak function you asked about to run apps was released in an earlier Android I think Cup cake. The Text to speech TTS is a function released in Android 1.6. The video you seen I think I saw on a google video showing things possible with cup cake I think it was going to be in one of the roms to come, I will see if I can find that Video and post it later.
My First rom for Rhodium with software from latest Htc Leo Build.
-The rom uses the Official Rhodium as base
-Uses the Official build 21854.5.0.80
-Uses Qilin Dialer (3g)
-Uses icons in startmenu from Qilin.
The rom is very decent, and I am using this as my personal rom for my Rhodium.
Download my rom here

Id love to use your ROM, but I can't access HTCpedia. i registered and never got a confirmation email. i emailed them, but they never sent me the verification.. Do you think you can upload it on to XDA?
thanks,
josh.

great work
hey there. I am about to buy an htc dream which is already unlocked. I want to root my phone so I was wondering if downgrading then rooting it would affect my unlocked status in any way?
Don't worry, your phone will still remain unlocked.
alright sweet, i was just a little worried because on another site (android forums) a user was saying that it may lose its unlocked status.

You might wanna wait though for upcoming phone in 2010 like Nexus that was rumored to be 199 unlocked but who knows might be less than 400 bux
My point is wait for something better since dream has very limited HW.
well i live in canada and we usually dont get access to nice phone right away, right now i am running an lg neon which is less than desirable. This would be my first smart phone so i will probably get it and keep it till 2011 or so. I appreciate your opinion though for sure.
Could I also get an answer for a thread link to the easiest method of rooting? I have heard about the instantroot.apk, would this work with an htc dream?

If you mean the GSM version then use this guide, it has a nice vid that should help out.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/
Follow each step and dont skip any.The GSM Dream cant be used on rogers or telus i think, not sure if they use CDMA(no sim)
There is no CDMA Dream Never heard of telus but Rogers is GSM fo sho.
i want to use it with fido (fido's parent company is rogers (they use sim)) would this still work? also does this work with all firmwares?
Will what work? If your phone accepts the SIM for the carrier you want to use now then it always will.. If not then you'll need an unlock code. Try the one click root method using flashrec.apk and report back if that doesn't work....
alright cool, im buying the phone on friday so ill report back later. (using the method in the video to root my htc dream)
Could someone please explain what the difference between recovery and rom is.

A rom is like Win7 or linux and recovery mode is like DOS/CMD or maybe safe mode on a PC.The rom is flashed and the recovery mode is needed to flash custom roms from here and to flash themes.
ok sweet, you guys are actually a HUGE help in helping me understand this. So after i follow that video my phone will be "rooted" After that I go to install the latest rom from CG. Do i use the files in the video (the recovery file) or something better out now? also should i use the linda file manager he talks about or astro?

google names the updates after pastries. 1.5 is cupcake (1st version to have a soft keyboard) next is 1.6 donut (supports different screen sizes, new market, a bit snappier) and the latest is 2.0 eclair (what the droid has. not out for any other phones yet. refined browser, car home, and other cool features like navidation, you can get navigation on donut too though trough the market.)

Since I do not have data I probably should not download this because the only internet i will be using is wifi. Does this phone have an option to turn off all data, to prevent accidental usage. (like the iphone)
Since I do not have data in my plan is their any reason for me to get this? i would think that google maps will suffice.
could somone also please exlplain SPL, from what i have read it is somesort of compatibility with roms, how can i check mine and does the latest CGM require a high SPL
Has anyone managed to get the Bell Self Serve app that is in the android market working with their HTC Touch under Incubus's Froyo rom?
I'd love to know if its possible...right now im getting a please try later error...all the time
Will not work. The Bell Self Serve app is only available on HSPA phones(because all bell phones that run android are HSPA) it reads information from your phone to bring up your account and it is expecting replies that would come from an HSPA type phone rather than CDMA.
i dont know if this helps but i just use the windowmobile self serve
when you launch the app in WM it takes you to a certain webpage
i then copied that link on android and then made a bookmark on the homescreen/desktop and it works fine
hope that helps
Can you paste the link here? Or is it a personal link?

i took a quick look... it appears that it would not be an easy & quick fix / rebuild i dont think, the entire program is written to use and be depended on <uses-library android:name="com.htc.device" />... before taking on this project id wait out as skype said that att was suppose to get releases of its video call first so id think we cant be to far behind

it doesn't work because it was not made for this phone. even if it did install, it wouldn't work with our camera because moto uses its own camera driver since froyo doesn't have one (gingerbread will). htc uses its own FFC driver as well.

Because they contain drivers for all the phones they know of with FFCs I would bet.
Could it be that because att doesn't have 4g yet, Skype is holding out?

Probably right. Here is Motorola's API:
http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/library/motorola-front-facing-camera-api/
It is so frustrating that using the same system (android) and also having a front camera but we cannot use the same app (skype with video).
yup but that was specifically develpoed for the thunderbolt, I assume if it does get officially launched with it, it will be a matter of time before that spreads to being on other devices (much like when they launched skype in the first place on android) the key question is will they fix the sound issues that moto's config gives these voip programs.

as I learned in the (otherwise useless) motorola atrix dev conference, the FFC driver for the atrix is written BY motorola. Android 2.2 does NOT have a standard FFC driver and so every phone that has an FFC and is running 2.1 or 2.2 is using their own FFC driver. That is why Tango and Qik did not work for the Atrix immediately when it was released, and Qik had to release an Atrix-only version of the app.
When gingerbread comes across all devices, it will have a standard FFC driver. But until then, every company running 2.2 uses their own and that is why these aren't compatible apps.

More than likely, it's because AT&T didn't want Skype to release it yet.. the carriers have a surprising amount of influence on app developers. Think of how the Inspire and Atrix still don't have HSUPA enabled whereas the iPhone 4 has had it since its release. My guess is they don't want to overload their already fragile network
