Sharing Files over wireless tether? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there, I realise it is possible to share files over WLAN, however is it possible to share files once Wireless tether is in place? The only way I could see this being possible is to host the files and access them externally, however this adds to my data usage.
Any ideas? Cheers!

I've not tested if swiftp works while tethering...you can try that.

Hi,
have you heard of a cool free apk called Hoccer. You can send ans receive files via adhoc.

use an app called websharing, it creates a http accessible site which you can access all your files through.
also allows password/authentication etc..

I bet we could get Samba running on this thing pretty easily
I like this app called Discover. Gives you a web interface to your phone's filesystem.

Cross-compiling Samba is a major pain in the ass! Going to try to get it working though.
i think ftp / scp will be much simplier...
btw you can mount the device as a webdev share if you use afile
In the marketplace, download OM ANTuner. It's excellent! It currently only allows downloads thru your computer browser, and I sent a request for the dev to include read and write capability to and from the android, also compatibility over GPRS/EDGE/3G. I was getting 800-1000Kb/sec transfer speeds!

aList has been working great for me the pass couple of days. Its really slick how fast it works and its easy to use.
Does OM ANTuner do anything that aList doesnt?
I'm using SwiFTP
Set my home router to always give me the same DHCP reservation.. I then use a good FTP client (On a Mac so I use Cyberduck)... basically just start SwiFTP's server and have the FTP client connect... brain dead simple.
Use it to transfer my iTunes music (non DRM tracks) from iTunes to a folder then drag to Cyberduck and other files.
There's a new app that showed up in the market over the past day or two search by date. It's an obvious name but seems to be read only.
Om sdcard wifi access is what it is called.

There is a app called awesome drop in the market that does the same thing but has like a 5sec setup time.

Not quite the same level of control...all files get stored in a folder called "drop". You then need to move these to whatever folder you want.
I prefer being able to choose where the files get sent. Thanks for the app link though...it is a very quick setup and simple if you are using another computer for a quick file transfer.
I am using an app called WebDroid. It works perfectly and lets you browse through every folder on your phone via wifi in a web browser.

Websharing is another app that works the exact same way.
Why not just use dropbox? This seems much more labor intensive to setup.
Astro file server also has an SMB Plugin for those of you running a samba file share system. I store all of my files on my linux file server anyway. For those times when I'm out of range of my wifi, I'll use an ftp client on my phone and log on to my ftp server. I also use dropbox. It all depends where the file is, where I am, and where the phone is.
I also love double twists new airless sync. That works just fine with my iTunes library.
Great tip though. Thanks!

That's what I use and I don't think it could be easier. Just setup a username and password one time. Any time after that you just start the ftp server and type the address into a file browser on your computer.

Seriously, just use Dropbox. I'm sure everyone uses Dropbox for other purposes anyways. Why not just download the DB client for Android and give it another use?

Dropbox is awesome and I do use it, but if you want to place files directly on your root or access files above root for modding purposes, this method is great.
To each his own I guess.
If you're running an i9000 ROM try Kies Air in the Samsung Apps store. it does the same thing and it works over Mobile AP or Wifi

Is it possible to post a quick "how to" or shoot me a PM?
I use ES File Explorer and love it and was unaware of the feature.
Their website isn't very helpful (the English version anyways) with no stickies on how to configure.
Any help is appreciated.
I'm currently using the ftp version the OP posted, but it's a bit buggy and temper-mental for me.
I used to use ES File Explorer but now use File Expert. It's all in one and has a few nice features, but the server scan is much slower which I don't use anyway.
You need to know a bit about Windows Printer & File Sharing and have at least 1 folder shared on your PC first.
In ES File Explorer, switch to the Network tab, then Menu -> New, and either scan or add a server. If you scan you'll see your PC's IP address, which can make it easier if you don't know it. Select that and you'll see all the shares. Select the one you want and then you'll need to enter the username and password of your Windows account the first time.
File Expert is a little better because it can remember the user account for that PC for all shares.
Anyway, after that you can copy and paste files back and forth and even play media over wifi, or copy tibu and nandroid backups to the PC just like you would between folders on the phone.
I'd love it if it was the other way around. CIFS share the android root or even sdcard on the PC!
I use Awesome Drop for quick small transfers, otherwise I use the SwiFTP server. FTP just seems like tried and true technology to me.

awesome find..works great
WiFi File Explorer Pro works fine for me (I don't need root access)-
1. Open App
2. Type provided address into browser
3. Upload/download/zip/extract the SD and Ext SD using the browser
4. Profit
WiFi Direct
I am hoping we get WiFi direct here pretty soon. But seeing Samsungs update record I won't be holding my breath.

GTabs and Windows networks

Is there a method or app that will allow a GTab/VEGAn 5.1 to view/connect via WiFi/LAN (on dock) a Windows network? Posting here might be a stretch unless an app exists. Might be better suited for Development group if so.
Searched threads and found very little (if anything) on this for GTabs (some for phones tho). Perhaps a solution doesn't exist---yet. Or I am showing my android ignorance!
Not sure what you want to do. I am using a tonidoplug ( server) and can access the HD attached to it via wireless network as well as over internet from remote location. Not a simple app, but an efficient solution.
Just the ability to browse a network/share files would be spiffy. Will check out tonidoplug. thanks
I use EStrongs file explorer to browse, copy, transfer, files on my Windows 7 pc's via my wireless network. If thats what you are referring to.
Precisely! Thanks
I find using the cifs support in Clemsyn's kernel with the free CifsManager app provides the best integration with windows shares.
This allows you to map, or mount, your network shares as folders on the tablet, giving apps that do not understand UNC and such, access to network resources they would not otherwise have...

[Q] Nook to Mac/PC via wireless??

I don't know if this is a noobie question or not. And search wasn't very helpful.
Is there a way (or an app) to connect my NC to either my Mac Mini (or my PC) via my home wireless network (not USB) in order to transfer files back and forth??? .... hopefully a way to move files locally without using the Internet (i.e. dropbox or similar)
I'm running full CM7 (EMMC) on the NC and Snow Leopard on my Mini.
And since I'm helping other people with their NC's, does anyone know how to do this on a stock NC????
Not sure if this works for the Nook but try Samba Fileshare app from the Market. Allows you to connect via regular I.p. address. I use this with my phone.
Use ES File Explorer app. This allows you to see and manage all the files on your Nook, and on a networked computer and do ftp transfers as well. Lots of functionality apart from basic file transfers, stable and free.
Yes there is an app call WiFi file explorer it gives an ip address to enter in the browser and then you can send or download files. it works very well I use it in the evo 4G and nook color.
I use ES File Explorer if I am working on the NC but if I am working on the computer I start Samba Filesharring on the NC and do all the manipulation on the computer. It is easier that way since I can see all the thumbnails of pictures so I can select them nd just drag and drop.
+1 for Samba. The SD card just appears as a share on your Windows network and if you check the box to remember your credentials you just have to remember to wake the NC up before you try to connect to it.
Try Dropbox. Easy setup and works a treat.

Yes! It works! I use it on my home network.

is there any way to totally disable the network (tablet)

Ok i don't know if this the right forum but i looking to give out to a few workers phones or tablets that have no internet access at all (i only want them to use if for calls and SMS - i not going to explain why i want it that way). i'm looking for an easy way to disable the network altogether.
i've got a GT-S6310 SAMSUNG or fire tablet. i tried an idea that i got into the platform.xml file (with the RomToolBox app) that is located in the etc/permission folder and erased the internet line>save and then restart and it worked. but there many problems like apps that crashed without even opening theme like google services.
i'm looking to just erase or change one file in the system to get to my goal. i'm sure that there are very specific files that are critical for the internet to work and if they are disabled or changed the internet access would go down. please help

This device (5th gen Fire) has no mobile radio so is off the table for your requirements. If you plan to leverage WiFi calling/SMS then that uses data, aka "the internet". Crafty individuals will easily circumvent any blocks applied at the ROM level unless device is rooted and you use secondary accounts. A bit harder to work around but still fairly easy to penetrate.

Look into selectively blocking internet access via third party firewall, hosts file or VPN. Likely need to create secondary/child accounts to limit access to the filtering tools. You'll need to do some searching/testing to find a solution that meets your requirements. Probably not the right device for what you are trying to accomplish.
