I have a g1 running CM 4.2.5 and want to update to the newest build. What is the best way to back everything up like my home screen placement, apps and such or is there a good way to do this?
Just update man, everything will be there.
Run bart or something like it which is basically a Nandroid backup.
However to upgrade from 4.2.5 to 4.2.8.1 you just update and it will leave all your stuff alone other than some file updates, but your settings and apps and whatnot will be just where you left it.
got it done. Thanks alot.
So I was running Enomther's 1.8.1 which was one of my favorite builds yet. When Froyo was released I switched to Modaco's Froyo online kitchen build, and then being impressed but missing my trackball colors, and tweeks I switched back to Enomther's 1.9.2.
My three questions are:
1)How do you backup your home screens? It's so annoying to reset them up which takes me an hour at least everytime I switch roms. I figured out how to back up my apps which Linda App Manager does perfectly.
2)When I went from Enomther's 1.8.1 to Madaco's Froyo it also updated my radio, so when I went back 1.9.2 did that reset my radio back to the original? Or keep the Froyo?
3)I know I can do a Nandroid backup but that doesn't restore between roms does it? It reapplies the previous rom right?
Thanks for the help!

This should be in Q&A. This has nothing to do with development.
Any help would be appriciated.

1 - There are multiple backup programs available on the market. Backup for Root Users has an option to backup the home screen and other things. Basically it just moves the .db files and puts them back, which can be done manually if you know where to look.
2 - Nandroid does not backup the radio.
3 - Restore what? Nandroid wipes and reapplies the previous restore point.
I recently had to get a new Hero due to damage to my original one. After I rooted and did a back-up I installed cm6. After a few days I decided to go back to check for any prl updates since I forgot to check before I flashed. Once my backup was restored I noticed some ... funky-ness ... unlike usual, none of my stuff was in the right place and the Market is missing.
Discounting all this here is my question...I'm still kind of new so excuse me if this sounds really stupid... Would there be any issues in restoring a back-up from my previous hero? I saved them to my computer to keep a back-up of my back-ups.
My wife had a back (nandroid) of Fresh 2.4. When a new PRL came out I read that we can update them from that rom so I flashed back to her nandroid of Fresh and hers updated right away. I decided to take her Fresh nandroid from her sd card and put it on my sd card, it let me flash back to it BUT it would not update PRL. In fact it wouldnt do much of anything! I flashed back to cm6 download Fresh, flashed and updated with no problem. I think something in the build prop or something messes it up when putting it on a diff phone.
I have everything the way I like it currently with the stock ROM. Apps, widgets and other customized things
1. Is it possible to backup everything, then restore everything to the 2.2 ROM using Ti Backup? Restore all apps, widgets, wallpaper, etc?
2. Flashing the ROM to internal eMMC, can the NC be restored to stock via the 8x reboot method?
That's all I'm wondering for now, I'm sure there will be more.
Widgets cannot be restored due to a system limitation. Second, speaking from firsthand experience you don't want to take information backed up on 2.1 and restore it to 2.2. I did that with my evo and I thought the phone was dying...everything was force closing and I had to reflash the rom. It was probably my restoring of the system settings(idiot move) that caused the problems but I wouldn't take any chances.
Yea, just me being lazy...
What about the notification bar? I like that is on the bottom. Can that be changed on a vanilla Froyo install?
bump..........
Hmmm...to get the notification bar on the bottom will probably take some hella coding but it can be done. Obviously B&N did it, also Acer does it on their Liquid ROMs (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903470) but don't count on it being done here.
EDIT: That link I posted was just an example. DO NOT flash it on your nook.
we dont really bump your own posts here...
Quick run down:
Pretty new at all this stuff, flashed my first Custom ROM on Friday (sc 2.4non voodoo), then quickly upgraded to Sc 2.6 Voodoo. From that point I flashed my first Theme (VA Green), really like it but wanted to dab in some other ones just to get a feel. At that point I flashed right over the VA Green with the Black and White Super Light Theme. Everything seemed to have worked fine, but I realized it was a mixture of the two themes and that wasn't what I was going for (being the noob I am I thought the new theme would just 'over write' the existing theme). SO I decided it would be a good idea if I restored back to my Frankenclean 2.6 vd that I had backed up (no theme).
After doing this I downloaded and flashed the newest version of Honeycomb. It booted, but as soon as I unlock my screen; boom FC loops to no avail. I, then restored my Frankenclean 2.6 voodoo (no theme) and everything was cool. I thought it was just the Honeycomb theme, so I tried simply restoring my VA Green theme that I had backed up and this time I got FC loop, into boot loop.
So essentially the only thing I can run is my non-themed Franken 2.6 voodoo. I have tried to trouble shoot as much as possible and truly cannot figure out where I steered wrong. -- I did go into CwR---> Mount/Storage at one point and MAY have changed a thing or two, so if anyone knows what that screen should read that would be VERY helpful (as far as what is mounted/unmounted etc etc).
Lastly, (since I didn't make it very clear earlier) I did do a factory data wipe/cache wipe and davlik wipe before proceeding from one step to the next. I also do have plenty of personal data storage available (someone had told me that could be the issue).
I am close to just flashing over to a completely different ROM and starting over, if anyone has ANY clue on how to possibly fix this I would appreciate it much more than you know.
Big thanks in advance!

Personally, I would factory reset and start at square one with flashing a stock rom in odin, stock kernel, root, then install SC2.6 + patch, kernel, then VA Green. Search the development forum for the stock files.
Sorry bout that fellas, mod feel free to move.
Ok, I guess back to square one it is. Thanks guys
EDIT: Since phone is rooted, if I flash an all in 1 file (that includes root) will that cause any problems?

Nothing will happen, make sure you disable voodoo before you odin back to stock.

Will do that right now, thanks alot man.
Again, sorry for the noobish issues; and more importantly misplacement of the thread.
You CAN flash themes over other themes, they do overwrite eachother, but you need to wipe data in between or they can mix the two themes together like that.

Forgive my ignorance, but when you say data, you are referring to factory restet/data wipe right?
Then from that point would I reboot from my restored frankenclean 2.6voodoo, or just run the zip after the data wipe?
Thanks again

I dont think you should be "restoring" the 2.6v with rom manager (thats what it sounds like to me from your posts). I would red cwm install from zip after wiped cache and dalvik cache. Boot up your 2.6v and restore apps and settings only, not restore your rom backup. Then go back to red cwm, wipe cache and dalvik and install your theme zip. Basically the theme only overwrites specific apks that the dev picked. Hope this helps get you going in the right direction.
