I do recall vaguely on some other past phones that I was able to add custom words to the dictionary automatically. Is this possible with Android? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it and it is quite frustrating.
Edit: Well nevermind. On a whim I decided to just long press on the word and it saved.

Maybe im expecting too much:
When I press gallery, almost 1/3 of the time only 1 or 2 categories come up and no thumbnails. Then i exit and press again and a few more things show up. Then i exit again and usually the 3rd time or so the app opens properly.
Also, about once every 2 weeks i press an app and it opens a different app. And this happens with multiple apps. The only way to fix it is to reboot.
I dont use a task manager
I reboot the phone every couple of days
I wipe the phone about once every 1 or 2 months
Is one of the above practices ruining my device?
I bought the phone and i havent done anything custom to it. Why does my polished 2.1 firmware work like a 5th grade science experiment?
Have occasionally noticed that the gallery app does not pick up all images and categories... something with the media scanner... try using the media scanner in the dev tools app or unmount and remount ur sd card...
Never had any problems with apps opening wrong apps... this is very strange... I have no idea why this is happening and quite frankly, I can;t think of anything which would serve as a possible solution!
Occasionally I've had the latest picture taken not show up in the gallery, but that's it. Stock O/S is great.
Never had it open the wrong app.
I don't run a task killer, don't reboot & have never wiped.
About the app opening the wrong app thing I guess its good news if I'm the only one. Is it possible that I've downloaded an app that is causing it? Or is it more likely an OS issue? it seems a little cheesy that the phone does this, if I could fix it without rebooting that would be a step in the right direction...
Likely an app you downloaded, or just something a little off about the flashing of your update, or a bad RAM memory block at the wrong place.
As for the gallery, I thought I had that issue a bit too, but I noticed that more than anything it just takes a really long time to open fully if it has been kicked out of the cache.
As for the original question posed in the thread title, Android is still Beta in a lot of ways. 2.0/1 is a huge change in many ways from 1.6. It sounds like 2.2 is going to be a bit of a change as well, but instead of changing nearly everything, it is going to build of 2.0/1 plus add in some changes. I am willing to bet that until the release after Gingerbread (the OS after 2.2, aka FroYo), not sure what the "H" release will be codenamed will we see an OS that isn't "Beta" in enough ways for me to call it non-Beta personally... then again, so far Android is less buggy than windows mobile, better than Blackberry even, and on par with iPhone OS, if not better in these regards.
Just like an OS for a computer, same holds true for a smartphone, there are going to be bugs, there are going to be bad programs/apps, and so forth.
I think you should wait for FroYo, if Android still doesn't meet your standards, root and flash some of the custom ROMs. Enom is very stock like, but fixes many of the little bugs, as does Cyan, although with Cyan you do get a few more bugs in some of the development apps and what not.
Just a thought, but maybe you're suffering from the occasional wacky touchscreen issue?
So it's not that it's just opening the wrong app, but the screen is registering a touch in a different place, it's usually most noticable when typing. If it is that, then a simple lock/unlock will solve it, no need for a reboot.
So I guess you also at some point had to chose a second or third word from the word suggest popup. When you do this, every single time a screen pops up teaching you about "hidden words". I have tried and tried to find a setting to stop it, but it seems like there is no way of removing them?
I just remove the hidden word. Which is tedious, as I have to put it in, remove it, and anter the wanted word.
There is the option to show suggestions more or less often. I'll set it to 'never', and just tap words if a mistake is made.
Yup, this works marvelously. Just tap the words that come out wrong to correct them. No annoying popup. NO last word that gets eaten because you press send while the popup is still open.
I find the more you put in your own words the quicker it gets. At first I could`nt get the hang of it, but now its quicker than normal type
Okay, so far, mostly good, but have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've used autonooter for 1.0.1 (after upgrading the firmware to 1.0.1 of course) and also disabled the cell and telephony services by renaming them to .OLD.
1) How do you get the web button to actually launch a different browser than the stock one? I've installed Dolphin and Dolphin HD and set each in turn as the "default browser" in their settings and mutliple times after multiple reboots. But when I use the 'web' button on the NC menu, it always takes me to the stock browser. What am I missing here?
2) I don't want the 'email' app running. I don't need it, don't want it (have web-based email for everything I need), but can't figure out how to keep it from running. Or maybe I just don't understand what it does? Can someone explain either the necessity of email or how to shut it off?
3) I also notice something called 'social' running. Have no clue what it is and figure I probably don't want or need it running. Can anyone explain this one for me (why I need it or how I shut it off)?
4) Has anyone found a workaround to replace needing a reboot to make installed apps show on the extras page?
5) How to you manage the 'extras' page? As the amount of installed apps grows, the page is becoming more and more difficult to use. Is this something simple I'm missing?
6) I noticed the open book/recently reading icon doesn't work now unless I use the stock launcher. I've read that all you have to do is run it once (then go back to softkeys or whatever) and the button works, but also read that disappears each time you restart (see above). Is there any workaround to having to do this?
7) Is is possible to remap the other keys? For example, make the open book button do something else? Or the keys in the menu that comes up?
8) Lastly...what size microSD card does everyone recommend? Seems anything over 4GB would just be a waste.
Thanks to anyone who responds!

Don't use the Web button. Launch the browser.
Set it to sync manually. Fixed.
Ignore, part of B&N
Use a launcher. ADW Launcher works great.
See above
Pretty sure if you hit the softkey for the B&N apps, hit Library, then tap the Book icon you're talking about it will launch the last book. 2 extra taps.
Those aren't keys, and let's just say no.
Anything under 8G ain't going to have much music or data. Up to you.
Thanks khaytsus but...
1) When you say "launch" the browser, from where do you mean? I tried the web icon in Zeam and it does the same thing. Are you saying the only way to use an alternate browser is to open extras or apps and launch it? So 'set as default' doesn't work on any of these browsers?
2) I set up the email check frequency to never but it still runs once rebooting.
4) Tried using the applications icon in Zeam and ADW, but it still doesn't show newly installed applications until a reboot.
6) Thanks for the suggestion, but the book button still doesn't work.
Any other thoughts?

Why do you think you need a rooted Nook?

I'm not sure I understand why that's relevant. Have you posed that question to the hundreds of others on here who have done so?
I am curious why people choose to root.
Just root your own and find out.
Sent from my hacked nook color.
I am rooted. I rooted because I thought this $249 eReader would make a great tablet with the right hacks/rom. So far the market, gmail, calendar and others things work great. Waiting patiently for CM7.
4/5 Theres no readin to use the b&n bar. Use the app drawer (from adw or zeam) to launch your apps. In the app drawer hold down your browser (use dolphin hd or another, the default is no good) icon and it will make a shotcut on the main screen. You dont really ever have to use the default bn stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872295 Do this to put books on your homescreen. Even when u close a book it will remember the last page u were on.
6 Its broke, havent seen a work around.
I'm a long time swype user ever since I got my first Droid. So naturally I was ecstatic when it was finally developed for the Xoom. I tried 5, maybe 6 on screen keyboards in the interim, and none compared to my swype experience on my Droid.
I finally have it on my Xoom, and it SUCKS! for one reason; The vocabulary is too extensive!
Because swypes vocabulary list is so extensive, I keep accidentally typing obscure words I hardly ever use, and even ones I have never (nebr??) used.
How can I access the swype vocabulary list and manually delete a bunch of clutter?
I'm rootes and I have Root Explorer, I just don't know what the file is or where.
Was attempting to use this yesterday. Had a few concerns with the privacy policy. There seems to be an idea that they need to upload data to their server when in reality they could simply upload stats, merge and delete but whatever, I got past that and took the plunge. However it then brought my system to a crawl. Anyone experienced the same?
Other than that, it was a fantastic keyboard that I'd recommend to anyone.
Did'nt have any such problems with version v. 2.0.5.153.
I've tried several differnet keyboards and SwiftKey X is definitely my choice.
If I could take a guess it would be that their upload and lag is the heavy use of text prediction, they're most likely uploading your use of and frequency of words used to their database as well as new words you've added to the prediction. Bigger the database and statistics better the prediction.
I wouldn't say it has brought my system to a crawl. But whenever I type and exit the application they keyboard can be seen for a fraction of a second after the original application has quit. Annoying but not a deal breaker for me.
