OK, let's get this out of the way first, I am a little challenged when it comes to reprogramming, flashing, etc., so please be gentle. I have read many of the threads, everything sounds great, it appears this phone can do many things. I downloaded several ROM's (chipped in a couple bucks for those), bought a mini SD card with 16GB, .....Class 4 if that is the correct term, believe I screwed things up more than improving things.
So, I could use some assistance. Obviously I would like this phone to do as much as possible, but the reality is I will use it mostly for calls, appointments, cruising the internet, and e-mails. GPS, camera and other applications really aren't that important for daily use. Bells and whistles are always fun, it appears the memory card I bought should be able to run applications without using up my phones built-in memory, just unsure how to set things up. If there is already a thread that does that a link would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, if you want information and advice you've come to the right place.
Check this out for everything you need to know about getting started and the flashing process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
Once you're up to date with the basics, the best advice I can give is to read through each of the ROM threads, try the one's you like the look of and find the one that best suits your purpose.
Good luck, and welcome to XDA Devs.

I just got the AT&T Tilt last Friday and have found myself pondering if it was worth the $300.00? I am thinking about taking it back because it seems to buggy. The phone its self is good looking but WM6 is just ugly compared to the iPhone interface. Anyways what do you think?
If aesthetics are you main concern, sure go with an iPhone. I like functionality over appearance, so I love my tilt!
yes it worth it, there is soooooo many apps that u can add, you can even upgrade from that cingular rom, i havent seen anyone with my tilt yet
Now come on... this is getting beyond a joke....You have an At&T Tilt, not a 'HTC TyTnII'
Please disclose your business affiliations as I am POSITIVE you are associated with apple as this is getting really stupid!
Who buys a very expensive phone without research then suddenly comes on this forum and denouces it within a few weeks without really trying it??
I am amazed!!!
OH, BTW I am not associated with HTC in any way and I find it a 100% piece of kit for what I wanted.
Amazing how many times you see "is it worth it to me" on forums. Who else but you could possibly answer if it's worth it to you???
hahahaha good point, Farsquidge......iphone=downgrade
First off I do not work for AT&T!!! I am a high school student that spent alot of time doing research on this phone! I love my "'HTC TyTnII" or whatever you want to call it! I only called it the Tilt for the simple fact that its branded name is the AT&T Tilt. This has to be the most unfriendly forum I have ever been on!
Dude you need to chill out. Swearing will get you banned. Everyone has their opinions about the iPhone and the Tilt. If you don't like someone else's opinions, just ignore them.
Personally I love the Tilt. The iPhone just doesn't do enough for me. Yes, it has a very nice interface but in the end, function wins over form.
If you want a pretty phone, go with the iPhone. If you want one that you can easily hack and tweak and load tons of 3rd party apps on, get the Tilt, but it is your choice to make, not ours to make for you.
In the end, you have to live with your choice.
P.S. I absolutely love my Tilt. It runs rings around the iPhone and I don't have to worry about Steve Jobs making my life difficult by not letting me do what I want with it.
Thank you. I think I will stay with my Tilt.

Please don't give up.. I know some of us (me for one!) can be a little short tempered with what is around on this forum at the moment (flaming the device!) but all of us on here would like to try to help you futher your unit!
I am sorry if I seemed to shoot you down at the start...
Let's move on from that...
You say you have a 'Tilt', first thing we can recommend is re-flashing your ROM to a HTC TyTnII as the AT&T is a very basic firmware but when you do this you will lose your AT&T settings ( that is your 3G HSDPA connection). Then you will need the latest Network settings cab.. Then lets move on from that!!! OK?
There are so many different roms witch is the one I need to use?
True, there are many. I like the att rom. it's not that bad. i just removed all of the bloatware on it by doing a soft reset after the hard reset and that freeed like 20 mb or so. btw, if you want to run different roms on the tilt, you must cid unlcok your tilt.
We need a few bits of info to start you off.
First, tell us the device (I know it may seem strange but we need to know who you bought it from ie At&T or whatever as this forum is worldwide!!)
Then when you first turn on the phone (turn it off by holding the power button!) try to get the OS and Radio versions it has. You may need to do this a couple of times as it disappears quickly.
If I am not online you will find loads of guys willing to help....
You have come into a great community that will work with you so long as we get the correct info...
I bought it from an AT&T store. The numbers are R1.27.12.11 G22.445.88.07h D1.57.00.00.
I need the same help here, thanks in advance
I will follow this thread since I have the same phone, same radio and OS, I'm very interested in getting a better ROM to see what are the PROS.
OK guys, have a good read at the WiKi...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
Especially at the 'How to flash a new ROM' section. It will give you a good aspect of what you will be doing..
I should have my tilt in a few days ( Amazon is the worst!). So I have been going around trying to gather as much information as possible on how customize my phone....Farsquidge, if I change my tilt interface to the TyTn11 interface I will lose my 3g? Also what is the benefit of changing? Also, I met alot of people who told me of good apps for my phone but is there a site where I can go where there is alot of apps with discriptions of what they do?

If you re-flash your 'Tilt' (as it is an AT&T carrier device) you will lose your AT&T connection settings.
You will end up with a 'Carrier free' device with (or) without sim unlock depending on the way you do it. You will then have to re-install these with a 'Network profile app' from this forum. You will find plenty of apps (in the form of .cab files) on here to keep you happy for ages!
Be patient because there are tons of guys on this forum who have reflashed their devices that will add their input to help you. No one is online all the time but will get to you when they can.
Thanks. The more I look on different forums, the more confused I get. I'm not to phone/computer savy so I have to do some research on the simple words and terms used up here. Thanks alot.
It takes a long time to get up to speed, I'm not close yet. Personally, I don't have a problem with the ATT rom, I guess b/c I haven't seen a flashed one to compare it to. I've added a bunch of fun/useful programs from this site, FFF and IMSMS are great ones and all the home customizations are very cool. The other day, I was beaming IMSMS to a friend. A stranger passing says "oh are we showing off our phones?" and yanks out his iphone hoping we'd be impressed. I said, "nope just beaming a file, do you want it too? Oops, guess you can't do that" You could see him deflate immediately. The iphone is neat to look at, but is so lacking in features and customization it's sad.
First off...hello to all! Great site!
New with the Tilt and have been searching and reading like endless hours! I've tried searching, various sites, etc. Tons of info but most appear pretty technical (sorry..non-techie!)...and I have some probably tired nooby q's for you seasoned xda gods. I have done a few basic mods like adding the HTC home, customizer; etc. I would like to try my hand at these ROM's I keep hearing about...but hesitant in screwing my new phone up.
1) What is a decent tried and true ROM...meaning enough flashy gizmo programs, etc to keep me busy without killing my new phone. Preferbably with a version of voice command that works via my Plantronics Discovery BT earpiece.
2) Ok..don't flame me...how do I "flash" the ROM? Unless I missed something..I found like one YouTube vid of some guy demonstrating it and I still don't get it. Layman terms?
I just want to mod it one final time and that's it for me as I'm sure others here mod theirs on a daily basis as it seems.
Any help is greatly appreciated...and patience with a nooby!
Thanks.
Welcome to the board, lots of information here, enough to make your head spin.
All of the ROM cooks on here do great work, if you're looking for bells and whistles you might want to look into one with Manilla cooked into it, or just load the CAB and use it on your existing ROM.
As for help flashing a upgraded ROM.

To answer your Q's
1) Check around in the Kaiser ROM forums..the first couple of posts of each ROM thread typically decribes what it carries in terms of programs and other info inlcuding bug fix updates etc..plus loads of posts on user feedback on the ROM
2) If you are at the extreme end of being a non-techie then i suggest you dont play around with flashing or get a pal who is savvy to do it for you..you can read up on the subject in the wiki and then see if you are comfortable doing it on your own honestly its pretty well explained there and i dont think it can be made any simpler...
Cheers
Thanks fellas for the sound advice. I'm always willing to learn new things; but when you're less than tech savvy like myself (and I'm pretty sure there's a few like me on here!)...all this info on just this one phone alone can drive you insane! I'm not necessarialy looking for all the bells/whistles..just maybe a ROM that's more or less had it's bugs worked out. And there are just a ton of ROM's out there...most look great but I'm also thinking in the back of my mind that the more advanced ones out there might be a bit much for a 1st timer. I may need to find somebody locally to help in case I run into problems..but I'm determined to do as much as possible myself..knock on wood! Thanks for listening to my long winded posts!

That was an awesome answer to a plea for help! Thank you for replying with no scolding or sarcasm! Thank you!!!
Hi all, I've been reading through this forum for the past week now, partially because of all the bad reviews for the Tilt, and partially because I like my devices to work better than they "should".
I've reached a problem though... During my readings, I began to get confused with why this ROM or that ROM was flashed on, and which version of WinCE was on at the time the ROM was flashed. As my brand new-still in the box Tilt (With Win6.1) will be here this Thursday, I find myself wondering "So what do I do to make my phone better?"
This is my first smart phone I've ever had, and the main reason I purchased it is so I can write while in transit to work or such, occasionally watch a movie or listen to some music, oh, and to use the internet. Unfortunately, this also means I seem to have missed the class on safely flashing ROMs, if I need to sit and write down phone information that may not be stored on the SIM, and even the most basic of all, "Do I need to do this to make it run smoothly?" I mean, most of the problems I seem to see deal with Win 5.x, or 6.0.
I reckon the best way to phrase it is, "While I would like to make it better, I want to know if (1) it's worth taking the time to do, and (2) what kind of boost are we looking at? 10%? 50? 100%?"
Any opinions, help, advice, directions or links, how-to's or whatever would greatly be appreciated.

First Trey, let me say, welcome to XDA! The biggest improvment you can do to your Tilt is going to be a ROM upgrade! The ROM is the OS of your phone and as you are getting a newer tilt you will most likely have Windows Mobile 6.1 on it but it will include a quote\unquote "custom ROM" from at&t which will be chock full of alot of at&t stuff(advertising in the way of logos and animation) that will slow your phone down, as well as a CID (security lock) to keep you for installing most of the good free apps that are available for the tilt! You will want to spend alot of time reading here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835 and getting to know your device and what some of the terms used here are! I am usualy on the forum quite a bit and if you have questions feel free to PM me and ask away! The key is to read and learn, I will be happy to help if you need it!
Thanks for that! Everything makes more sense now that I've got that AT&T OS piece understood. Looks like I've got more reading to do. ^_^
Alright, please don't butcher me and be constructive before posting. I've noticed a lot of people posting in this forum getting bashed by others not really helping in anyway.
Anyway, I got a stock N1 2.3.4 and love it. The only issue I have with my N1 is storage. Now I have done the whole adb thing and set to go to the SD card, but I am app hungry as I am a systems engineer and have a lot of troubleshooting apps. Problem being, I have to constantly choose between what I need vs. what I want to use; and both conflict due to size. I have been looking at possibly rooting and even possibly going to a mod (Cyanogen) but do I really need to? My only issue is storage of the apps, so if I can get all the apps I need onto my N1 without having to do any of the previously mentioned, I rather do that.
Any ideas and help would be awesome.
If you root you can run a rom such as, cyanogen which allow moving app to sd-ext. (a script such as dark tremor's a2sd is required)
You could even move dalvik cache and data to the ext. Moving app to the fat 32 don't help much as data still reside internally taking up space.
I guess the follow up question would be then, does it do it natively or like you said, there will be some reading and tinkering to do?
I just rooted to CM7 for the same reason and I get like 100 to 200mb extra space with all my apps already installed before I used to have 25mb free. it does make a difference good luck rooting.

Read the FAQ, question 9.
There is a good reason why some people are bashed on the forum - it's because they refuse to read and do their homework before they go around opening threads and asking the same question for 100000th time. Please try to avoid being one of those getting bashed, and before you ask - invest your time searching the forum for answers. Think of it this way: are you the first that is likely to ask that question? Does it seem like a rare question? And if both answers are "no" - then you'll most probably find your answer without asking.

Some people are just cranky... there is always a bit of RTFM...but this is a forum.
I finally made the plunge about a month ago with CM7 for some very similar reasons as I was just running out of space to run any good applications. I still don't have it tweaked the way I want but doing more research on getting Darktremor to work best for my application.
I have been reading these forums since before I got my N1 and just did not have the need to install any of the ROM's...mainly as I did not think I had the time if things went sideways (usually happens with my projects it seems) but the instructions people have put out are really good and fairly easy. I might not have my mom try to root a device but it is surprisingly easy. I have not jumped over to the nighties yet and may do so in the future.
So my general summary is do it... Root... and get CM7 or the flavor of the month you will be surprised on how much you like it and wonder like I have why in the world you waited so long
Good luck
Chris
app2sd doesn't need a custom rom or anything like root to work 'n' its built in since froyo. anyway try the "pm setInstallLocation" process it might work even without root.
currently there are two different ways to root, with or without unlocking the bootloader.
anyway storage isn't necessarily a reason for choosing CM or whatever like MIUI/Modaco or anything.

At this point I don't think people should really mind simple questions at this point of time. the N1 section doesn't really have that much traffic like before when good questions would get buried under the how to root or best roms questions.
It's actually not so much about the forum traffic, but about the quality of answers. People get tired of answering the same things over and over, and eventually they stop. As long as there are enough knowledgeable people that still answer - it won't matter, but when enough of them stop answering - there won't be good answers to keep this forum trustworthy.

Trust me I wish this was the case. It leaves always files on the main memory and even though I really don't have that many applications the storage left is only 30mb. After a bit of browsing on the web on it, I get running out of space notifier too and I have done both the app2sd and the setinstall location.
Thank you for those who posted with useful info unlike some. Anyway, going back to the topic, I just ordered a class 10 card since mine are only 2 and 4. I guess you didn't read the FAQ after all, otherwise you would have known that all the "courteous members" of the forum that answered you, don't know a thing about A2SD - which wasn't mentioned anywhere in the thread - and all the space that CM7 helps you gain isn't nearly enough for most people with N1. Even using A2SD without Dalvik2SD flag is not enough for most people.
But since you insisted on calling the FAQ "wasteful info" and bashing me personally, instead of actually reading the required minimum - I'll move to other threads, and you'll get your help from others. If you'll find someone willing to help, that is.
The forum also has search for a reason.

Hello there dear people! I just ordered my first smartphone, LG. I am FULLY newbie in Smartphones and I have almost no clue 'bout anything relating to them to be honest. All I know is that I have there Android 2.3.4 and the phone will arrive to me in next few days. I did some research and there are some questions that I'd like to ask.
A) I heard that camera in this phone is very bad, but mainly when you do research 'bout this phone you read two years old threads. When I came to your forum and checked the thread with 'best photos you took with LG' I was happy again. The question is how to get a good camera quality? Not like the old photos that I've seen which are REALLY bad.
B) I don't even know what ICS, Kernel, ROMS or anything is. I don't know which Android is best/newest and which to choose/ how to install. I'd really love to get some explanations from you that will help not only me, but many confused people starting their smartphone adventure. So...
C) I heard that battery life of this phone is fully unacceptable, but again, it was two years ago. What about now?
Having said that, I heard that this phone gets a totally new life with right software so if you could please just write me what's best to have this phone with:
Good camera quality,
Decent battery life,
Good audio on headphones.
I just realized that I don't tend to play so many games on phones and I might have bought a gaming phone, when what I really need is good photos, Internet, audio and battery.
Thank you for any answers in advance, I know that the subject must be probably very huge (like asking about Laptop software, windows etc.), but there must be some kind of default things making this phone better, and I want to install it as soon as I get the phone. :highfive:
Alright, here's my advice: stay with the stock ROM for some time. Yeah, I know it sounds crazy, but that'll help you understand the difference between LG's software and, for example, Cyanogenmod (CM).
Also, try not to ask questions that might be obvious to the most seasoned users. Instead, use the Search function - a lot. That will save you time and you will learn a lot in the process.
Experiment. Our 2X is quite hard to "brick", so if anything goes wrong you can always get back on business by flashing a stock ROM. So, don't be afraid to try stuff by yourself - even if it means screwing up your device every now and then. That'll teach you how to use the recovery, how to use Smartflash, NVFlash, etc.
Stop by the Development forum and read the stickies. Tonyp's Baseband thread is a must read. The other stickies might be a bit outdated, but I believe they're still worth a read.
Again, and I want to remark this, use the Search.
I'm aware that most of what I've said is not probably related to what you asked, but since you're a new smartphone user I believe these tips will be helpful for you.
Stay stock for a while, lurk the forums, read a lot!
