Stock headphone controls broken / laggy - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, apologies if anything like this has been posted before, but I've done a search to no avail.
I've been using the stock N1 headphones since I got the phone at launch, mostly for the remote functions as I tend to skip music a fair bit. Recently i've noticed that the phone no longer displays the headphone icon when they're plugged in and the buttons are becoming unresponsive.
At first it seemed like something was simply eating up phone CPU power, as repeated presses would eventually kick them into life (sometimes having them register 3 or 4 presses at once) but over time the buttons have simply ceased to function altogether. The headphones themselves still work, it's just the controls that are dead.
I've tried several different media players (most of which attempt to intercept the remote presses) and they ALL have the same issues. I've even replaced the stock music player with the modded one doing the rounds in custom roms and in the apps forum to no avail (and yes, all of these media players were only used one at a time to avoid them interfering with eachother).
Been using custom roms for a LOOONG time and these issues are pretty new.
So main question is - is this likely to be a software issue or are my headphones just dead?
If they're dead can anyone recommend decent replacements that can be shipped to the UK and have inline controls like the stock ones?

I CAN'T be the only one who suffers lag from wired remote-am i?

With my Bluetooth earpiece being hard to find, and me using phone as a primary mp3 player when walking around & at work n stuff, I'm pretty familiar with the laggyness of the wired remote sometimes. At first I thought it was just some music players themselves like Tunewiki or Meridian but when i fall back to the default music player - there is still some bad slap happy crappy laggyness with tapping on the button in wired remote and the phone either not responding - or responding MUCH later afterwards (several seconds to maybe a minute or two afterwards?). Sometimes it leads to me trying to use wired remote to answer call and needing to use the phone itself to answer calls or else I risk missing the call relying on wired remote. I'm on Cyanogen 4.2.4 @ the moment but remember goin through this issue for a a good while now
C'mon... really? You mean NOBODY suffers from this or anything similar? :\
Did you still have this lag before installing cyanogen 4.2.4 or was it after installing it that it happened? Perhaps you can try installing the official 1.6 donut rooted or something, and see whether the remote lag is from the rom or the hardware itself. But if that's too much of a hassle, I can try flashing cyanogen and testing out my wired remote. I'm on my way to switching roms soon anyways.

Focus S Headphones Controller Not Working

The phone rocks, but it does have some flaws. Right now I can't seem to pause and play without pressing the button on the headphones like 2 or 3 times. I tested out a few headphones that I know worked on my old Focus and my iPhone and they don't work consistently either.
I also tried the Focus S headphones on my iPhone and it works perfectly. Anyone experience this?
you know i have, i've been posting (*****ing) about this since sunday I'm suspecting a major flaw in the design of the jack itself, but we'll see. The next track/previous track doesn't seem to work at all, and the pause/play seems to take some manipulation to work
this happens to me as well, kind of really annoying, and really my only gripe with the phone.
I get a popping sound through the speakers in my car (AUX plug) when I change from track to track. I am using the same cord I used to use with my Focus and I've checked my Focus S in both of my cars that have an AUX input.
Has anyone else tried this?
Plug your phone into your car using a male-to-male 3.5 cord and play your music through it. When you change from one track to the next you'll hear a popping sound. It's much louder in my Lexus vs my Impala but it's obvious in both cars.
I am also having both the controller issue and the "popping" sound through the speakers of my car.
The volume buttons seem to work, but the play/pause button only works when I hold the button for a second or two before letting it go. Because you have to hold it for a second before it registers, you can't use it to go back or forward through songs. I tried the controller from my Venue Pro in the Focus S with the same results, so the problem is probably with the phone itself and not the controller.
Whenever I have an AUX cable plugged into my car with the engine on, I can here a loud whining noise that I assume is the cable acting as an antenna and picking up noise. When I plug in the DVP, it seems to sort of ground the cable and stop picking up noise even when music isn't playing. With the Focus S, the noise continues when the phone is plugged in and only stops when music is playing. During the short time between songs, music is not playing and there seems to be a sort of noise spike that makes a "popping" sound.
I suspect both of these problems are related and have to do with the jack as jmerrey suggests.
I have been having the same issues with both the Car playback and the controls on headsets. I really hope they fix this major flaw. This phone will go back if not.

FYI I am using a stereo Bluetooth headset from Motorola and do not see any of the above issues.
Volume up/down, pause/play and skip forward and back all work as expected.

that's because the issue stems from the actual headphone jack, it's not a software or firmware problem, but a hardware issue.
Okay I figured out how to get the controller to work pretty much 100% of the time. You can't just press the button, you have to hold it down for about half a second for it to pause and play consistently. Any more or any less than half a second and it won't work. I've been doing this for pretty much the entire day and it seems to be working now. Little annoying that it works on a delayed press but its better than not working at all.
Yes, but you still don't get the double press for next track, or triple for previous track. I've been able to get the double press to work a few times, but that's it. I've also noticed that with aftermarket sets, like a beats headset, it's incredibly inconsistent. I really hope this is fixable with a software patch, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have only volume up on all type of press button.
anyone hear if this is going to be addressed or if it has been acknowledged?
thanks
I have the same problem with my Focus S. The volume buttons are working fine, the problem occurs only with the play / pause button.
If you want to play / pause you have to hold the button longer than just the usual
short click. If you know the trick it works most of the time for play / pause, switching songs with a double click is almost impossible and very hard to time.
I tried it with the original headset from my Focus S and with the Nokia purity all have the same problems.
I also tried the all headsets with my Lumia 800 and a Omnia W all working fine.
It seems to be a Focus S only problem, not sure if it is hardware or software related.
I'm on 8107 using 2103.11.10.1 Firmware would a hard reset solve the problem??
firmware issue
I have experienced all of these problems above and here are a few tips/fixes and ideas. First with the headset controller on the ear buds, I noticed if you press harder it picks it up easier. If you get it down just right you can time it for going forward and backwards. Still not a real fix. Its definitely the phone because it works on my focus, iPhone, and mac. Also, I think it may be firmware related because the popping occurs between songs for the aux cable in the car only when audio isn't playing, so I would assume it had something to do with the firmware, not the hardware. It distinctly gets quieter when music plays, even if the music is silent (just knowing something is playing is enough for it to shut up). Also I noticed that when I plug in my phone for battery, it connects, disconnects and then reconnects. I noticed this with the vibration (should only be once, actually is 2-3 times). And when battery is low you notice because you plug in, it disconnects and you get a notice of critically low battery, and then it connects. I think this may be the firmware that all the ports seem to turn on and off whenever given any form of stimulus (data or power sent through them).

Tango and the new Samsung Firmware fixed this issue!!!
Now i can listen to my music how it is meant to be!!!
:victory::victory::victory:
i got tango, but no new firmware. Which update updated the firmware?
I got Tango, but I had to hard reset my Focus S to get the Firmwareupdate.
Maybe because I InterOP unlocked my Focus S, I'm not sure why it worked after a Hard Reset.
My Software is now:
OS: 7.10.8773.98
Firmware: 2103.12.05.2
yes but didnt the LE2 software update disable your ability to interop unlock your device?
if we can get the phone accept our own signed cabs we can extract the driver updates, fixes and patches and ignore the diagnostic tool updates that disable our interop unlock method.
in short make a backup BEFORE applying any samsung OEM updates, when you need to interop unlock again, you can revert to your pre OEM update, apply the interop unlock again, then re apply the OEM update. from what i gather you are best doing this every time you have an OS update as there have been issues with restoring backups that cross OS versions...
Oh course you lose any unbacked up txts etc, but i think the benifit outweighs the hassle.

Media button fix among other things

Hey folks! I'm looking for a solution to the media button on the headset cord only working a fraction of the time. The earphones I use are a-JAYS Four and Beats Tour with Control Talk. Compatibility isn't 100%, but, from what I understand, the volume buttons are the only things that don't work. The biggest piece of functionality I need is play / pause that works 100% of the time as well as skip track double press and back / previous triple press. A huge breakthrough would also be the ability to plug the earphones into the One while it's in sleep mode or while it's in use, browsing or whatever (not during a call, of course) and be able to press the media button to resume audio playback of whichever media app that was last open. This has always been missing from the beginning and I'm not sure why it's not a priority. Is anything like this available on the One?
I'm very interested in the Klipsch S4A version II earphones, but I'm generally suspicious of headphones that require their own app for full functionality. Are they worth it? How do they compare to the Beats Tour? I love my Beats Tour set cause they feel the best in my ears with extended use and they sound wonderful - I love the bass levels
My current dilemma is choosing between the S4A headphones and the mophie juice pack. I can't afford them both.
Thanks for reading.
I use my phone at work constantly and I need to pause and resume constantly when interaction with others is necessary. Often times my hands are dirty, so I really won't want to have to wipe my hands off, take the phone out of my pocket, unlock it, resume playback and then put it back in my pocket all those times. That is why this piece of functionality is so crucial.

Music volume changing while listening to spotify

Hey guys,
Love my new S6, because of memory limitations, I'm using spotify more than the music player. I noticed that when I listen to music, the volume keeps changing by itself (but remains at the same "number" that I set), I believe it's an EQ problem due to the voice/instrument equalizer function that keeps adjusting one VS the other. I was able to downgrade the amazon appstore still has version 2.6.0.813 and it's better (but not perfect yet, I hope they fix this bug in the next spotify update, just wanted to share in case you though you were going crazy (as I did).

Disabling Nuplayer does not work
solution from the previous post does not work, I and others tested it and spotify volume is still messed up with Nuplayer disabled, downgrading seems to be the only solution as of now, sorry for the confusion

actually, I've noticed this problem with Google Play music as well.. I'm not using the equalizer.. for no apparent reason, at some points in certain songs, the volume will inexplicably lower, never quite recovering.. weird
same here. thought i was going deaf bc i had the volume up to 80%
Is it happening with your stock music player? I disabled Nuplayer and spotify is still misbehaving but the Samsung player works fine. I didn't find a Samsung user forum to report the problem but will look more into it.
old version works
Using S6 Edge, had this problem myself with spotify - can confirm using the previous version of spotify fixes the problem.
Agree there's points where it stoll changes volume ever so slightly but definatley a big improvement.
Can't post link to download due to new user restrictions.
Thanks to OP for posting his findings. Big help.
Peace.
I have been going back and forth with Spotify support for weeks on this issue, and it's been escalated to a Tier 2 person who I've been working with for almost a week now. Specifically, my problem is that the sound on any given song will vary throughout the song...it will start at whatever volume I have it set at, then suddenly get about 25% quieter for about 10-20 seconds, then go back up to original volume. This happens in almost a cyclical fashion my entire time listening to Spotify on my phone...whether it be through headphones, phone speak, or a bluetooth speaker. Spotify support even gave me another test account to try, which this issue also happen in on my phone....and they logged into my account on their end and done extensive listening tests, but are not able to replicate on their end. They had me try everything...clearing cache, trying with volume normalization ON, then trying with it OFF, WiFi only, data only, listening to cached music with no data turned on, re-installing, rebooting, updating, deleting all Spotify files/folders from the file manager, listening with corded headphones, bluetooth headphones, phone speaker, bluetooth speaker, etc. They really feel at this point that it's the Samsung Galaxy S6 that doesnt play nicely with Spotify, but they cannot figure out why. I'm still troubleshooting with them but so far no solution, only a ton of things ruled out as culprits. =(
This is a few days old but do you have sound alive enabled?

What Could Cause Bluetooth Audio Stutter? [6.0.1]

Hey everyone,
I've been battling this issue since Day 1, and its been a bumpy road. It seems as though this is a widespread issue across many Android devices, and fixes range but none of them seem to completely eliminate it.
When connected to Bluetooth audio, certain devices, the audio stutters or "skips". Ive noticed this extensively in KItKat. One fix for rooted devices was to increase the idle CPU frequency, I did so with Tasker and it definitely suppressed the stuttering, but did not completely eliminate it.
One of the most notable points of stuttering is when you answer a call via Bluetooth, then hang up. After hanging up, and music resuming, there is a solid ~10-20 seconds of constant stuttering and skipping until playback returns to normal.
Imagine my surprise when I upgraded to 6.0.1, and had absolutely no stuttering without increase CPU frequency or anything! Just buttery-smooth playback, all the way through, even after hanging up a call.
However, a couple of weeks after, the issue came back again. I had to re-enable my task to increase idle CPU frequency, and that horrible stutter after hanging up a call is back, strong as ever. To me this indicates perhaps something I modified after stock interfered., however nothing I can think of should come close to affecting it, other than XPOSED (however, XPOSED was installed prior to this issue coming back up, and no new modules were added)
Additionally, since Marshmallow, my phone won't reconnect automatically to my head unit. For example, when my car is on accessory mode and the stereo is on and BT connected. When I start the car, the system momentarily turns off for ~5 seconds at most, and turns back on. With Lollipop it would automatically reconnect, here is causes some serious problems as the only way to get them to reconnect after is to turn off the stereo and the phone, and turn both back on again. Sometimes I even have to do a couple of cycles.
Does anyone have any ideas?
i tried to do everything possible to fix the issue... I have a stuttering keyboard as well... anykeyboard I use seems to stutter, it lags a little, but most words that i type apear two times...
I have no issues at all like that, or stuttering throughout the system. It is specifically related to Bluetooth audio.
Anyone?

If you do not have this problem, what kernel do you use? I just flashed BeastMode today, hoping that will bring me a bit of luck. However as it worked initially and a few weeks later broke down into the pathetic mess once again, I have my doubts
I use power amp and in advance I set thread priority to the highest and audio buffer to 750ms. I've used them all and haven't had skipping

Seems to have improved it, but reconnect issue is still present
The reconnect issue may be related to the stuttering.
The unit may be also trying to download contacts at the same time which causes the stutter.
Have you tried unpairing it from the unit, renaming your phone and then pairing it again?

I have in fact tried to re-pair the unit many times, to no avail. Factory resets also yield no benefits. It is set to auto download contacts, I'll try to disable that option to see if it improves anything.
I have the stuttering almost removed, however it still sometimes occurs. On a recent long-distance road trip, it randomly started stuttering after playing flawlessly for 1.5 hours, it was incredibly frustrating. I rebooted the phone, and the stereo, reconnected and it started playing smoothly again. Keep in mind however this is with both raising idle CPU frequency, and changing the poweramp options mentioned in Post #7
Perhaps I should try a custom ROM?
You can also try stopping media scanning. I think there is a xposed plugin
I only notice this on a non-name-brand headset. (Also, after it happens, I disconnect and reconnect...and it works fine from there on out...until Power down) My other 3 don't have this problem. Music plays, get a call, hang up, music pick right up. Didn't read your post in detail to see if you've tried a different pair of BT receiver.
FWIW it's not just you, also use PowerAmp, have the buffer turned up, and also get stuttering. On pvsgh's stock rooted deodex'd debloated 5.1.1 with beast mode 1.92 + ZL fix and both my motorola s10 headset and sharkk speaker stutter from time to time. It does not seem to be universal. In the beast mode thread it bluetooth audio issue was brought up, but didn't really get much attention ::shrugs, palms up:: I even limited them to media only but still get the stuttering.
Like so many things it seems, it worked ok before the MM update (910t3 on dok2 ootb) and now doesn't. Kinda like my ability to sign into enterprise level (work - EAP login) routers...
CM12.1 didn't make a difference in my case. Been on several stockish 5.1.1 roms as well. It still happens. Swapping out roms doesn't appear to pay off. It hasn't for me anyway :-/
Interested to see if a solution (or a cause?) lands here...
