2 car docks - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have and extra car dock. I sent my car dock in for repair…HTC toll me it would take about a week to get it back. Well he didn’t tell me they were also in the process of moving to a new building. Long story short…I call 2 ½ weeks later…and they ship the replacement 2days later. Well a mouth ½ later they ship my original replacement.
So I have 2 car docks.
I was going to eBay 1…but I decided to keep it and try to use it as a desktop dock. Is there a way to use it as if you plug a USB cable in from the pc and mount your SD card?

No one know if this can be done.

Why don't you try it?
Or send me one and I will try for you.

Try what?
Is there a way to rewire it to pickup as an USB. That's all I'm asking.

charge port cracked

Hey Guys,
so i bought my phone in december online and it worked great. I love the phone and think its an unbelievable investment. But just last week, I tried to plug in my mini-usb upside down and I cracked the small chip that the miniusb plugs into.
The phone does not charge, and seems pretty much ruined. I tested alternate batteries and went to the at&t store and they said that because its cracked it wont charge.
Does anyone know of any reasonably priced repair centers? Or has anyone ever had experience just shipping it back to them and getting a new one?
I called them and said it would cost $300 to repair, cost me $250 to buy....
Thanks a lot,
Greg
Search -- there's a place in the US that will repair it for about $80
The same thing happend to my tilt. I would recomend you try charging it using the adapter. It seems the adapter aligns the pins on the mini USB port.
Hope this helps.
There is always the option of getting a second batter and a cradle to charge it I have one just so i can take the spare battery on the go
Here is a good example of what to look for
Its not a fixed USB port but this should get you back in business. Also, If you have Hard-SPL , you dont need the USB port to flash or mod another rom. Just use the Micro-SD card. Its faster and easier anyway
Hope this helps
Excellent repair work from: www.ppctechs.com
I've had two tilts repaired.

Why can't you buy a usb cable

Does anyone know if you can get a seperate usb cable for the streak yet?
I want a spare one so i can keep it in the car, or a longer one because i find the one that comes with the streak to be too short.
Anyway if anyone knows where to get one then could they let me know
Just had a thought while typing.. just buy a usb extension lead...off to buy one to see if it works.
yes Dell sell them on their website mate
Another option is a USB extention cable. I got a 6FT for like $10 at RadioShack. Works great for me, you can also buy the Dell car kit that will work as a backup USB cable.
Is there a way to buy a compatible one?
I live in italy and we can order only from dell.it that obviusly hasn't streak and accessories in their site....

It'd have to be blooming long to use in the car, depending on the car journey

Well it has recently been confirmed that the streaks connection port is a PDMI connection. The Slacker G2 radio also uses a PDMI but no one has tried its cable yet. Specs are one thing but fitting is another. (Think of it how the first iPhone had a 3.5mm headset jack but you had to buy the apple headphones that didn't an elbow and were narrow enough to fit in there.)
So if anybody has, or knows someone that has a Slacker G2, feel free to try the cable out and tell us all
Source:
http://www.streaksmart.com/2010/08/dell-streaks-proprietary-connector-is-actually-pdmi.html
Images that I can find for the slacker 2 radio charging lead seem to show a standard mini usb connector. Maybe the pdmi connector is data only?
can u use the ones on ebay?
Now i ordered another one from Dell site....
With only one cable, I finally ran out of patience and also constant carrying existing cable from place to place everytime I moved around.....
I have to have one near my bed for reading/charging thru the night....one in the car - which I will carry around to office as well...in the coming months hopefully the price will drop or there will be another source - till then this will do.

Another Review: Samsung Galaxy Tab Car Dock

check out my review. just in case you were in the market for one. i highly recommend it
Samsung announced a few accessories when they launched their Galaxy Tab. I finally had the chance to pick up the Vehicle Mount (aka Car Dock) and take it for a spin. Check out my unboxing and initial impressions of this car dock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl2Ktb9Skac&feature=player_embedded
Summary:
When I bought the official HTC car dock for my Nexus One I thought to myself, “this is how a car dock should be!”. When I sold it, and started using the Galaxy Tab as my primary device, I new I had to find a car dock with the same precision and quality that the dock for my Nexus One had. I was quite surprised at the exceptional build quality of this car dock. The dock contours to meet the curvature of the Galaxy Tab and it just fits perfectly. The 3.5 mm headphone jack as well as the mic, volume rockers and power buttons are all accessible when docked. The bottom of the dock has the proprietary 30 pin connector that, not only helps secure the device but, allow you to charge it too. Being able to charge the device with the included car charger is a true bonus; one less thing you have to pay for. Once docked, the Tab will automatically go into car mode (not working in the video) and gives you access to quick functions like making a call or doing a quick search. This car dock retails for $69.99 but you can find it as cheap as $45.99 from mobilecityonline.com and its worth every penny. I must say, Samsung really came through with this product and I am excited to try out the rest of the accessories for the Galaxy Tab. Okay enough reading, GO BUY IT NOW! You won’t regret it.
Nice review, thanks! Going to order one ASAP.
I ordered one from the Amazon Marketplace for about 56 w/shipping. Some guy has them listed at full retail on eBay with or best offer. So I typed in a note and a link saying I'd do it for that same price if he could match, only response with no note back was a counter offer for $67... LOL. I guess it's not worth doing business with someone who doesn't even bother to notice what you wrote to them.
I just wish that it was possible to make these in a way that would allow a proper case to be used with the Tab. I have what I think is a very protective case, but because of it, this would not work for me.
Hey, is there enough room with the connector part slid back to insert another connector?
Reason I ask is that this thing would make a nice desktop dock when it wasn't in the car if you could still use the standard USB to 20 pin connector.
I guess you could use that USB to coax cable with the regular AC charger indoors to keep it powered up, but it would be nice to have USB connectivity as well (file transfers, flashing, etc).
Croak: Will have to check but by memory there is not enough room. I will try too look at it when I get back home tognight, the dock is in gf's car.
Really like this car dock by the way !
After looking at it there is def no place to put another connector there

[Q] Car Chargers

Has anyone found a good car charger that they know works with the Focus? My dad's super-paranoid about my phone, and wants me to have a car charger. The problem, as many of you probably know, is that the Focus seems finnicky about what chargers it gets along with. Does anyone have one that they've tried that works?
I went with the Belkin Micro USB car adapter, works great, especially if you need to charge other USB devices.
This is the charger I used. It's made by Motorola but it works great with the Focus. Plus the LED light is a transparent window which looks awesome. It doesn't quite look like the photo. It's also discounted. I'll probably be ordering a couple more to keep in my other car.

IGO
I use the IGO car charger with the tip for my Samsung Focus. I also have the tip for my wifes Samsung Sync A707. I also had the tip for my FUZE when I was using that. It was nice, we could travel and just bring the additional tip and charge either phone. Works on my Focus very well.
I bought my Focus from Costco and they gave me a free no-name chinese car charger with the phone. I used it only once so far and my phone did not explode or anything, but I don't know if it was actually charging or not. The battery icon had the 'plug' graphic on it, but how can I tell if it was working properly?
I ended up getting a cheap charger off from eBay, it's kind of like the motorola listed that has the USB port. It also came with the USB cable and another house plug-in with the USB port. I travel a lot for the military so I like to have a spare cable and house charger.
i've used a Griffin which has a USB plugin...from my blackberry phone, HTC Tilt2 (winmo 6.5), HTC Aria (android), and will use it on my Focus. but with the battery, i haven't had a need for it yet lol. off the home charger with a full charge at 6:30am...drove to atlanta (well covered 3G area) to Athens (so so 3G) and all the back home down back roads through no name towns (spotty coverage). it's now 5:30 and i'm still showing half a battery gauge. that's with a few calls, plenty of texting, and a lot of web browsing.
damn i love this phone
I use one I got from Costco with my Backflip last year. I figured all micro USB would be fine.
Got a couple Rocketfish ones from Best Buy - work great
IMO, the Belkin is nice because it is low-profile. a very clean looking charging setup. Also can use whatever microusb I have handy rather than some dedicated cable.

Get the OEM charger here. I have had no issue with the MicroUSB connector, unlike my last car charger that just died. Can't beat the price either.
I bought three of these chargers...
I got three of these chargers off amazon. They are oem, but are official motorola and look really nice. They have a translucent window with the M on them that lights up when they are plugged in. They are a steal at less than five dollars. Go here-->http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehicle-Adapter-micro-USB-Charger/dp/B000S5Q9CA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304549428&sr=8-1-spell.
That's what I got too, just through Amazon for prime 2 day.

Car Dock

I was wondering if anyone has found a car dock yet that's designed for the Nexus 7.
I am mainly looking for something that I can basically set it into and allow it to be hooked up to my car's power while running an aux cable (my car doesn't have bluetooth) but still have bluetooth included anyways.
I'd like to avoid the generic car mounts with charges and such seeing as I don't want to have to put it into the mount, plug in the power, then plug in the aux cable.

It is 'generic' but is pretty good. I have used Arkon products for years and have yet let me down.

Yeah, unfortunately not what I'm looking for as that's a mount, I want the whole package together, not separately.
Anyone find a car dock yet for this, I've been looking and so far no luck, just more or less generic car mounts still.
You can wait for brodit. No release date.
Best to wait, nothing official out yet.
That's unfortunate that they didn't bother to launch something like this with the release, or close to it as a lot of people probably want to use this as an in-car gps/entertainment (music) system.
Well it's been a few weeks now, anyone find a Car Dock yet (not a generic mount)

Have you checked out RAM Mounts? I can't post a direct link since I don't have 10 posts, but they now have some specific mounts for the N7. I've been using their products for years on my motorcycles and they're top quality products. They have a solution for just about any mounting idea you have.
Just Google RAM Mounts and on their home page, in the center column, third post down, you'll see a link for Google Nexus 7 Mounts.

Both Brodit and Herbert Richter have a long sad history of being up to six months behind the curve when it
comes to making new holders for the the best devices. When you already have a mount system it's annoying.
I hacked another HR holder to fit my HD2 back in Feb 2010.
Still using it with my HD2 now. Don't hold your breath for a dedicated dock.
Still umming and ahing over buying the S3 in black in October or waiting for the the upcoming 1.7Ghz HTC One X+ Plus
I contacted ProClip USA and they are going to make one, but there's no ETA yet.

One would really think that some of the bigger tablet makers would give large heads up and almost demand that some car docks be available come their product launch time...

Brodit have released passive holder for the Nexus 7 so far, I'm guessing active holder won't be far behind.
Yep, that's what is called a Mount, as all it does is Mount the device.
A Dock as mentioned before has the connections built into it (usb/aux) so you just slide it in and you're all set to go, no connecting additional wires yourself.
ProClipUSA is shipping, ordered mine today
Custom fit (Brodit I imagine) and uses the USB for power (was hoping someone would use the pogo pins one of these days). Ordered mine today - it helps if you've already made the investment in their excellent car mount systems. I've got them in 3 vehicles with their Move Clip system - I love 'em. See ProclipUSA dot com for details, search under device mounts.
I have a universal phone cradle that somehow expands far enough for my Nexus 7... I'm not sure what brand it is, but I bought it at Radio Shack for about $15.
Johnny, that's a mount then NOT a dock.
Also a little steep for what ProClip is asking, you have to buy their mount + 100$ for the dock itself too
Im trying to mess with an old dock for my gs2. Ive took it apart and it has the perfect shape usb input for a custom dock.
What im thinking though would need some fiberglass work though.
A little harder but something like below with a galaxy 7

Yes, it's a mount. I use a USB cigarette adapter which basically turns it into a charging cradle. You really don't need anything fancy or need to spend a bunch of money to get this functionality. Sure, it would be awesome if we could get an official car dock that utilizes the POGO pins...
