Does "Freezing" apps in Titanium Backup work the same as renaming them or deleting them? Also, if I wanted to receive an OTA upgrade or apply an update.zip, I would have to rename them back to .apk correct?
I'm looking to try and run some benchmarks in quadrant for before and after of some bloatware (which is why I don't want to just hide them with launcher pro).
Sorry if this has been asked already, I promise I searched first!!!
Thanks in advance
I believe it does. Why?
There are a couple different ways to see what processes are running on your phone, (Settings>Applications>Running Services, the various task killer/manager apps, etc). I systematically went through the list of running services and froze a bunch of them. Then I restarted my phone. The services were no longer auto-starting / auto-running. I believe Titanium Backup actually renames them using a particular file extension which allows it to recognize them as "frozen" and prevents them from being recognized at APK packages. I could be wrong about any / all of this, but I believe my observations are easily reproduced if you have a copy of Titanium Backup installed.
I bit the bullet and dropped the few bucks but even freezing apps didn't seem to make it any faster. I seemed to pull about the same score in quadrant.
Just because an app is showing as "running" in Android, DOES NOT mean its using its taxing the CPU. Unless the app is classified as foreground, or service, its basically just dormant, waiting to be called on and ready in an instant. For the most part, freezing apps isnt gonna do jack.
As long as you aren't using a task killer, Android (and especially Froyo 2.2) knows when to kill off apps and apply the memory in other places as needed.

How about removing them completely by renaming?

Before freezing apps I was pulling about 900 on Quadrant. I froze A LOT of apps that I have no need for including "home" because I use Launcher Pro and I have no need for the Moto home app to run in the background. After freezing I waited until my phone had been running a while and I had used a few apps then benchmarked again. Quadrant scored 2171. I'd say it made a difference. I took a screenshot if anyone wants proof.

I never said I didn't. I'm using the 2.2 Nandroid backup from this forum and I think it includes that. Why, does that give a false reading?
I'll be glad to give a list of what I've frozen, but it looks like I did freeze one system process that I need to unfreeze. Whichever one lets you see what your battery has been using. Whenever I try to go to it, settings crashes. Anyone know what I need to unfreeze?

Well i didnt want everyone here to be mislead that they were gonna get that score just by freezing apps. Afterall, thats what this post is about. And you made it seem like you got that score by freezing apps. BTW, that build.prop edit you have breaks the gallery's ability to playback HD content. I'd recommend getting rid of it and using this mod found here, My build.prop edit and Instructions
I had that battery settings issue also. The only way I ended up fixing it was to SBF, and then update to 2.2 via koush's Rom Manager. Works great now.
I discovered that on mine the battery manager bug only appears when the battery is below 50%

Thanks for the tips! I used your modified build.prop but kept the stagefright mod since i use Act 1 to play videos. Still getting great benchmarks! Thanks!
I think i can do without the battery thing. I really don't want to sbf. I might start from scratch when an ASOP ROM comes out though.

Mine does it no matter what. Good to know it's not something I did with freezing apps though.
I havent done any stagefright BS... my Quadrant scores are legit...
Right out of the box, the very first hour i had the phone, the first app i installed was Quadrant and my phone got a 1200 brand new running 2.1
Now since then, im running 2.2 and have deleted / renamed many apps, dont even use blur, i use launcherpro etc etc... and now it only scores a 1400 in quadrant
its very frustrating when i can go from a completely 100% out of the box device and get a 1200... and then i do a 2.2 update and delete all this crap and only end up gaining 200 points out of it

Is there any tmobile customer who actually likes this new market layout? Tmobile has replaced the "downloads" button with a "tmobile recommended apps" button. Not only is that self-righteous and gay, but all the apps there seem completely random besides the tmobile apps. Wtf.
Is there a way to push a non-tmobile version of market? Im not sure, but i dont think this is the new version 1.71. Mine still shows as 1.66. If anyone has 1.71 please post it here. Id rather have an updated market app than this gay ass layout change. Thanks.
I have v1.66 as well, and no I do not like the market.
I have never liked the market.
Category layouts are dumb.
People search the market in 3 ways.
They either know exactly what they want... Search Program Name
They know the type of thing they want... Search "program does this.."
Or they go window shopping. Scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll...etc
The F*ing scrolling is driving me crazy! By scrolling through a huge list, I never remember where I was, and I have to constantly start over.
I want to be able to see what apps were uploaded each day. That way I can search a given day and know that there are no apps that I like for that time period.
Hmm what did the Dev's throw out yesterday....Oh cool! aw crap. Neat!
I stopped looking at their "recommendations" a long time ago.
I don't care what they think I might want. I sure as hell don't want My Account which has been listed as a #1 app since it came out.
For more experienced users..The F*ing program doesn't do anything that logging into your account, or using one of 20 other programs doesn't already do. Like I need ANOTHER battery monitor!
I just found a market app that might be better. Called My Market by Chris Hager- allows multiple filters, recommendations based on users comments, and you can bookmark items. Let you know how it goes.
OK this is one of those programs that you find once in a while that are the "OMG Why isn't this standard." type of thing.
It does have a little problem staying connected to the market server when I am using it, but....
I can scroll through all the apps in the market, bookmarking any apps that look interesting, and "Removing" ones that are not. (removing just hides them in a folder called "Removed")
I can mark an app as "recommended", not star'd like the market, but just a flag saying that I liked the program.
I can also email the market link for an app to someone from inside the program.
You do have to open the market to DL though which is kinda annoying, but the fact I can sort through stuff makes it totally worth it.
Yea i gotta say mymarket is pretty cool. Only thing that bugs me is that it looks like the old market from 1.1. Thanks for the suggestion.
So 1.71 is the market from 2.0?
I also noticed that apps I have installed originally from the market and later uninstalled due to a wipe or whatever. Then reinstalled from SdCard are now showing up as updates available. Would of been ok, however I have two apps I simply do not want to update and its annoying the heck out of me because I now have to look at them everytime I goto the market.
How did this Market update happen? I don't remember updating it or was it forced or a forced layout change or something?
Looks like you can go into Settings > Manage Applications > Market
Uninstall Market upgrade. Of course how long before that comes back.
I think this is the market you guys are talking about.
http://www.mymarket.cc/
I noticed in the /data/data/ folder there is two listings for the market. One being an upgrade and one being the regular.

Apparently it takes less than a day to come back. I uninstalled the T-market yesterday morning before work and it was back before the end of my work day. This kind of sucks. All their "update" did was make me have to use the physical menu button to check my downloads for updates. More time wasted and more wear on my menu button. Thanks T-Mobile.
I went into /system/apps and deleted the vending updater program. Also uninstalled the "update" to the market. Not having any trouble now. Was having a ton of trouble with stuff not install after downloading. The update hasn't come back yet either, so so far so good.
After my uninstall I haven't seen it come back as of yet.
Yeah the market app is kinda screwy lately. Literally last night before I went to sleep I was using it to download something.
I wake up today in the morning and it's completely gone I have never had that happen before.
Lets see if it comes back on its own through out the day hehe.
Honestly I really hope it's my rom doing something screwy though cause I would hate knowing that they can take off an app off my phone when ever they want just like that. WTF you know.

How did you uninstall the update? I just went to settings>applications>manage applications>Market--uninstall updates. I may try Gilliland12's method but I don't know what else that method may effect.
sxfx:
Many people seem to be having problems with the market on Cyanogen's latest. I always wipe and do a full install and I don't use a2sd, compcache or swap and I've had few to no problems with his ROM's (just some random reboots on one of the older versions).

Yeah Iv been using Cyan for as long as I can remember. I do use a2sd, and some swap nothing major.
But I don't seem to have 99% of the problems everyone else is having heh.
Just a glitch here or there but nothing I cant really figure out.
This market thing really just happened recently when tmo started screwing with it. I guess we will see what happens in the next few days .
Supposedly there is a really nice updated coming from Cyan sometime soon. ..

How to make your Andriod Market FULLY FUNCTIONAL :
**Keep in mind this only been TESTED with Market Version 3.0.27 & 3.1.3 (It may work with other versions).**
I recommend Market 3.0.27 over 3.1.3 ! I find 3.0.27 work best for the NookColor.
What do you need :
- LCD Resolution (Free From The Market)
(Is other apps out there BUT THIS IS THE ONE I TESTED AND IT WORKED FINE FOR ME, you may use others apps however your result may not be the same)
**I do not recommend changing the SCREEN RESOLUTION using the manual way. USE THE APP!**
Steps (SUPER EASY STEPS) :
-Go to the market search for :LCD Resolution
-Open the application, now you gonna see your Current System Density. It should be 161. (*If not please don't panic*)
-In the section that says New Density click on it, delete whatever is there and type 160 (**Please MAKE SURE is 160**)
-Now make sure before you hit APPLY click on the box that says ALWAYS SET ON BOOT. (If you do not click that, IT WONT SAVE THE NEW DENSITY ON BOOT !)
-Now click APPLY (Your NookColor will restart after that)
-Go to Setting/Applications/Manage Applications/Market/Clear Data (this should make your market work right away!!!!!!)
***Sometimes take about 2 - 3 days to take full effect on the market but IT DOES WORK***
I hope this help you guys, any questions please feel free to ask !!!!

Please help!
Running CM7.0.3 with Market 3.0.27. I appreciate all the hard work you dev's did to put this together! I mean, I'm an idiot, and you all even made it where I could root it....
The market shows the movies on when I change the LCD density to 160, but when I go to play them on the google video app, it said it cannot play video on a rooted device.
I could not find a fix for this. Any advice, or another good place to download videos for my plane flight?
Thanks!!!!
You're probably better off converting your own with HandBrake. That having been said, Google Videos looks for the presence of the su command to determine if the device has been rooted. There was at least one detailed thread on the subject, unfortunately I don't know exactly where it is (and su is a pretty short search term . Long story short is you hunt down su, rename it with Root Explorer, and rename it back after you're done watching Google videos...a pretty big PITA if you ask me.

Cool beans! I'm experiencing something similar. Going over 24 hours without having to wipe data. But can't tell why: I had not checked my apps in a few days, and in a fit of flashing angst I decided to see what was new through rom manager, noticed a new gapps package and flashed that last night. Didn't even wipe market, it didn't ask me to accept terms or anything, yet here I am with a market that just works at 160 dpi over 24 hours.
Are you by any chance on the updated gapps (0828)?

I think they did find a fix. I try almost every rom for Nook color and with LCD to 160 all the apps work. I'm currently running Market Version 3.0.27, everything working the Movies section let me watch movies with not problem at all !
My market's been running fine for 4-5 days, all apps (and movies) are there, density set to 240 (160's too small for me). I'll believe it's really fixed when any density works. I'll switch back to 200 and see what happens.
The op mentions that a new version of gapps may have fixed it, but I don't see a new version of gapps on the wiki. Is 20110613 still the latest?

New market has always worked at 240. it breaks after a while at 160. This is what we were referring to.
New gapps can be found at goo-inside.me
Just thought I'de let you know...
I've permanently changed my LCD Density from 161 to 160 to make Market work. That should replace your workaround in the OP about getting the LCD Resolution app, right? Since mine's permanent, it ALWAYS boots and has 160 as the density. The problem is, I still have LOADS of Market FCs. And I canb't see Google Videos in the Market either. Market's version is 3.1.3 and I got it from ROM Manager's gapps. (The most latest one). Any workarounds on this?

O.K. Wearing my tinfoil hat. Looked and couldn't find the processes that might operate this rootkit on my Bionic, but I really can't be certain what I am looking for.
The HTC versions were IQAgent and IQRD. Nothing similar that I have found, but I'll bet they are there somewhere.
Anyone found anything?

I've heard that it could be disguised as Contacts Sync and ContactsData. They have the same icon (although that doesn't mean much).
I haven't been able to determine if its the same thing or not.
Anyone able to confirm that the Bionic is CarrierIQ free?
I tried the Logging test tool, but if they renamed the app it won't work.
Either way, this thing is going to cause such a lawsuit with huge repercussion. (which they deserve)

Likewise, I ran the "CIQ Checks" test in the "Logging Test App" by xda member TrevE mentioned in this article as a reliable way of testing for the presence of CIQ: http://lifehacker.com/5863895/carri...everything-on-your-phone-and-how-to-remove-it The test completed running and nothing showed up in the "CIQ File List" so I'm assuming the Bionic is clean.
I don't think the Contacts Sync and ContactsData icons are a reliable way to test for CIQ. Found this on another site: "The icon is a default icon, not specific to Carrier IQ. It can't help you determine whether or not CIQ is present."
After all the latest news about the rootkit that is allowing apps to bypass requests and can track what you're doing on the phone, I have found that particular app on our Bionics.
First, read this article:
http://www.helloandroid.com/content/are-carriers-illegally-tapping-your-android-phone
Next, go to settings, applications, manage applications, all applications tab, and look for the Fake Blur app. I am rooted and rommed and noticed that I still have this app. Is it something that we should be worried about? Has anyone tried uninstalling it and seeing if the phone still works without it?
Well, for whatever it's worth:
http://www.theverge.com/2011/12/1/2602532/verizon-carrier-iq-denial
So that would seem to strongly support the idea that the Bionic lacks CIQ.

It's present in Shifter rom also. I was going to uninstall it using TB, but it seems like it might stop something from working, because when I attempted to force stop the application and went back to my homescreens, it was like I had just turned the phone on and they were sluggish.

you need to drill down into logging. Or use an app that can monitor more specifically what's using data where. Bunch of them in app store. Perhaps elixer 2 can be of help. Or some developed on this forum.
Installed any app as system app? Samsung has a bunch of apps that are installed as system such as weather, news etc. Are you using those? Stuff like the hub also.
This is another classic example the designer of the analyses apps on samsung needs to be educated, its as useful as the battery analyses app. Cant pinpoint the exact issues.

Background data
I also have the same problem. I used to keep my mobile data always on. Suddenly one day I saw my data usage has gone past 250 MB in just 10 days this is when I don't use mobile data much. I checked in settings it was displaying that Android OS used around 210MB. I checked in trustgo antivirus there it was showing that "VIDEOMAKER" application is using the background data. Even in this month same happened "Videomaker" ate my 60 MB of data within 3 days. I am wondering why videomaker is using background data. I never opened that application. I have attached the screnshots.
Android Os Download may mean a firware upgrade or something. Or may be backup of data to google
Google play seems to be using a lot of data. If u have not download so much apps then disable auto update.
u can use droidwall from the playstore it u r rooted. it acts as a. firewall and u can control. which app can access the Internet (root needed)

I also have this Android OS downloading in the background as crazy, causing battery drain. I found out that this only in the open Wifi network of my college (this doesn't happen at home).
It really freaks me out, but I guess is something related to ¿authentication? or some shhhhht...
Tried DroidWall and everything, blocked everything, also Android OS, but it continues downloading... I proved it isn't related to any app (wiped and flashed different ROMs here in this problem-wifi and at boot I connect the wifi (not even set Gmail account) and it starts with the downloading...). It just makes me want smash it against the wall.
Go to settings > Backup and reset > deselect the backup my data option. and then monitor the Android OS data usage
Did anybody ever solve this? Im havng the same problems... Turned off the HTC back up data and its still using mb's! Scared to turn the net on my phone without wifi now! Checked all the settings I can think of nothing is synching without me telling it to or being on wifi? Confusing!

you need to drill down into logging.
This is another classic example the designer of the analyses apps on samsung needs to be fired, its as useful as the battery analyses app. Cant pinpoint the exact issues. wtf.

First thing I do is take every Samsung app out that I can.
SENT BY POST...
Everything I can think of is only automatically updated WiFi only or manual update... Weather, email, sync,
Facebook, none are automatically updated! Even tried deleting a ton of apps, logged onto the net and it went up another mb! So strange...

Anyone know what this is yet ? Eating up all my data allowance and don't know how to stop it

The times it has happened to me, I've searched all kind of information about it, and no way to solve it. Some say wipe/restore (still persists), some say firewall (it will do nothing since it looks like it's the core itself, nothing will freaking stop it), some say it's Google Backup thing (I always have it disabled)...
The only thing I got out of it is that it's "seasonal". It happens from time to time and no matter what ROM or settings I change, it's there, what makes me think it's Google-side or account-side related, not the device or ROM itself (at least for me).
How many days it's been for you? (For me it was just around 15-20mb. Your 280mb are just outrageous!).
Good luck
It's up to 360mb this month that was just the last week! It's strange as the first week or two it only used 5mb...
What's also strange is in the text it says I've used less data in this period than the android os figure, so I wonder if this is actually coming out of my data ?
Phones orange about it and they seemed clueless but have given me an extra gig allowance which should hopefully make it ok for me, but they are so slow updating it's hard to keep track on what you have used! What a nightmare!

And not only the GBs, also the battery drains due to this useless usage...
I'm guessing that's the new HTC One? Have you tried to see if anyone else in One's forums has the same problem?
Maybe you can try Network Usage or Phone Usage (Also 3G WatchDog) to see if something pops out...
Not yet, just saw this thread on the search so added it on here! Will try on that forum to see if anyone knows anything but from googling it looks like it's a mystery!

Well restrict the background data guys like you do for mobile data plan.
Select the wifi point you use as a wifi hot spot. Done.
Now android os and apps won't gonna use it on background, only on foreground.
To do that - open settings -> data usage -> press options/menu key -> Wifi hotspot
Now check the the wifi point which is prepaid or has limited data.
And on back menu turn on the "restrict background data". Done.
Ps:- these settings are on jelly bean.. not sure about others.
Also you won't gonna get notifications for your email, whats app etc.
They will be only visible when you open the particular app on foreground.
Hope that helps.
Same issue..different phone

I recently got the LG G2 I'm on Verizon and having the same issue. Android OS sucking down an obscene amount of data. In less than 2 days my phone went thru 4gb! From what I've found this is a really big & widespread issue, even iphone users are dealing with this. Seems to be varying reasons from cusrom roms to misbehaving apps. Im starting to think it has something to do with everyone being data mined, its not like google isnt in on that, wtf is goona burn thru 4gb in 2 days? Actually less than that. Verizon seems to be working with me & I'm pretty sure they're gonna adjust my bill..but this still needs to get fig'd out. Something is up, but beings ios users are having same issue, makes me more suspicious than i already was. Fkn big brother

could be :good::good:
Has anyone resolved this yet?
I also have the same problem.
Can't restrict Android OS' background data.
It's still consuming data even if Data Connection is off.
Android 4.2.2
I have a TouchPad using CM9 (I think one of the newer nightlies after the last stable, it's been a few weeks though). Everything has been working fine for a few weeks. Go to my home screen, and the wallpaper is missing (I use a live wallpaper that uses the Gallery to get a custom wallpaper, live wallpaper was working fine, but missing the background). Tried uninstalling/reinstalling the live wallpaper, nothing. Happened to check out the Gallery app, and it looks like all it has access to is my online Google account pics, nothing local on the "SD card".
I tried resetting permissions, wiping cache/Dalvik, deleting the Gallery4.apk and re-installing GApps...nothing. Gallery still only shows online pics. All other GApps appear to be working without any trouble, and I hadn't made any changes at all since my last CM9 re-flash.
Thoughts?
Gallery has always been buggy for me, i removed it altogether and use quickpic from the market instead, no problems.

Hmm, ok, I'll give that a try. Not sure if the live wallpaper will be able to recognize that as the default image viewer or not...we'll see. Thanks for the idea!

Ok, fair enough. Screw you, Gallery!
Do you mean live wallpapers like multipic? You should get a pop up with different apps you can use to set where it gathers pics from, any apps where you can view pics, but even file managers should come up.

No, it's actually this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mx.livewallpaper.clock
The live wallpaper part is actually the clock, but you can set it to have no background, a solid color background, or a specific image from your device. Up until now, it used the Gallery app to browse the images and you could choose whatever, but I turned on the device and the home screen was black (clock was still there). I tried to reset it, but it wouldn't work. Then I tried to go to Gallery and found it could no longer browse my local device. That's when I figured out something was wrong.
I had a similar problem yesterday after flashing the latest nightly MX video player couldn't see me files which were there, I checked with file explorer. I finally got it to work by removing the tick from the box that said :
Respect.nomedia . I also saw something similar on one of the other forums rootzwiki or cyanogenmod but can't remember which.
:
For anyone who is unaware, Rom Manager's latest update has cause some issue with the nomedia file on the /sdcard where pictures are inaccessible through your native gallery application client. This happened to me earlier.

Solution, though temporary until the ClockworkMod Team releases a fix with the new update:
Uninstall the update for Rom Manager in your 'manage apps' in settings and/or install Quickpic from Google Play.
(or, better yet-)

You didn't say anything about reflashing the ROM itself. Sometimes that's the only way I can get problems to sort out. FDR, format system, cache, install update, gapps, boot once, go back to cwr and fix permissions.

Ruh roh, looks like that could be possible. I'm pretty sure I set Rom Manager to allow auto-update...guess that's getting turned off...
Thanks for the update! I'll try this when I get home.
Ok, an update to what I did to fix it.
First, I applied the update to Rom Manager from Apex_Strider's post (thanks again!). I think this was the root of the problem, for sure. However, after applying it, Gallery still wouldn't read local images. I restarted the tablet and tried checking again, but still no good. I then re-installed the update APK one more time, and then ran Rom Manager and chose the "Fix Permissions" option. I went back in to Gallery, and once again it didn't look like it worked...but I just let it sit there for about 15-20 seconds, and finally the images on the device started to populate. Went back and re-configured the live wallpaper to use the local image files, and we're off to the races.
Thanks everyone for the ideas, and Apex_Strider for ultimately pointing me to the solution!

Yeah, forgot to mention it'll take some time (depending on how many images you had stored) for everything to re-populate. Glad you got things back in order!
