[Q] FORCED UPLOAD by KEY PRESSING and ODIN - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all, I bricked my phone yesterday.
And couldn't get my phone in recovery or download mode (key combinations didn't work).
I found a new mode.
no sim, no sd in the phone. Remove battery, replug it -> connect usb with PC -> wait for the battery icon -> hold vol up+home -> then the phone goes in "FORCED UPLOAD by KEY PRESSING".
ODIN then found the phone (not Kies: it detect it but hang there - it do not add it to the devices list), but whent trying to flash, ODIN hang at "File Analysis".
How can I manage to get ODIN working?
really need help guys.

for my brothers fone..
change odin to xp compatibility.
try it again. it should work

Same pb with ODIN in xp compatibilty mode (i am on Vista 32bits).
maybe i am doing stuff not in good order:
What i did:
1 - Put phone in forced upload ****
2 - unplug usb
3 - launch ODIN
4 - put my files in ODIN
5 - plug phone (detected)
6 - start
7 - .....hand at "File Analysis"

try other files, other firmwares.

No success yet.
tried JP2, JP3, JPC, JG5.... i feel very sad now

Do it this way and see what happens
1 - close kies
3 - launch ODIN
4 - put files in ODIN
5 - plug phone
-- 1 - Put phone in forced upload ****
6 - start

OK, so I think it's time to bring back the phone to the shop....
tooooo bad.

You are supposed to hold volume down, enter, and power to enter download mode and then plug into odin.
If you guys are going to try flashing your phones you better know exactly what you are doing.

I agree, but my phone did not want to enter download mode like that.(only with adb reboot download).
then I flashed my phone with ODIN (JP3 from [email protected]), succeed.
BUT when rebooted the phone stayed at the S logo and continuing rumbling.
THEN i found the FORCED UPLOAD by KEY PRESSING combination.
AND NOW trying to get ODIN working in that mode since EITHER recovery or download mode combination do not work anymore in my phone.
THANKS!

Did you try another usb, preferable one that directly connects with the motherboard?

YEP, tried that, but again no success

Nice, my provider give me back a brand new phone in 2 days.
Will be very very carefull now with flashing.
So as I saw in frandroid.com french forum, if you have a phone wich not allow download mode with the key combination, flashing may not work like me.
If the new phone will be the same, will wait for the orange/samsung froyo official update.
Cheers, and big thanks to you guys who helped me.

you can try: adb reboot download at the very beginning when the phone is booting...
It might work.

It is for dumps not download hence forced upload.

adb reboot download did not work in the starting boot. Device is not detected.
OK, so definitively bricked.

I had the same problem with Odin on Windows 7 - I couldn't get it to work past the SetupConnection (right after File Analysis); I switched to an XP machine and it works right away.
Try an XP computer if you can.

Is that fact or just a guess?
Why would they call it forced if it's for dumping firmware? There needs to be something that is considered not forced for it to make sense.
It could easily be interpreted in other ways, for example:
Download mode: Flashing is initiated/managed by the phone when it detects that software is ready to send data.
Forced upload: Flashing is initiated/managed by the software when it detects that the phone is ready to receive data. (This would be more like flashing by uart/jtag than the download method)

i have the same problem! :-(
no key combo for me...

[Q] Help me!! My Captivate is a brick!!

My Captivate became the brick by failure of the recovery.
The screen remains black.
The power button and volume buttons no response.
In Japan, I cannot repair it.
I am not a member of AT&T.
Please teach it if know the shop repairing other than AT&T.
step one. get odin3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
step two install drivers if you dont already have the drivers on your computer, there are manual driver install tutorials online, google it
3. extract files and start odin.exe
4. put .pit file in the slot labled pit
5. put .tar file in the pda slot
6. plug usb data cable into computer, not into phone yet.
7. pull battery and put it back in,
8. hold volume up and volume down, insert data cable into phone and continue to hold the volume up+down buttons for at least 5 seconds. it should be in download mode. normally you have a yellow sign with a robot holding a shovel but i once had a black screen and odin still saw the device
odin will light up a box showing you are connected and the text should also indicate you are connected.
if not you may need to take other measures for download mode see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829492&page=3
9. once you are in download and odin sees the phone hit start to flash the phone.
if the flash is not successful try to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989&highlight=odin+click+stock+rom+jf6 instead, master clear if at all possible
It is not a download mode.
Odin3 many times I used to change the ROM, all of which succeeded.
This time, ClockWorkMod Recovery in ROM from microSD installed, black screen freezes when it reboot.
From then on, things that can both download mode button.
Also, USB does not respond to the command prompt can also ADB.
Thank you.

try building the adapter in the thread i posted, supposedly it forces download mode. also it is posible to be in download mode with a screen that is black, it happened to me once, try to flash it anyway.
you might need to take a trip to akihabara to build the jig but it's worth it i think.
also if the phone starts to a black screen then master clear it with odin one-click on that screen.
thanks for the info. saved my phone. thanks
Thank you for giving good advice!!

Maybe not. I thought I was there too.
Keep trying the battery pull method. It took several times before it finally worked for me.
Here's one version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9024244&postcount=7
but you can try other button combinations (like just volume up, or just volume down).
If you don't see anything on your screen, that doesn't mean it hasn't worked. Sometimes the graphic for download mode gets screwed up so the screen will still be black, but ODIN will still recognize the phone.
If you really are hard bricked, then you need jtag service. MobileTechVideos can do it for you.

Make/buy a Jig (forces the phone in to Download mode) if that doesn't work then like startngate said you will need a Jtag to fix it.
thanks for the reply i took it into a samsung certified repair tech here in the city he has a jtag machine. odin wouldnt recognize my device at all

[Q] HELP!!!Cannot restore to stock ROM

Hi there I got a Samsung captivate SGH-I897 and I got a custom rom installer from Rom Kitchen. I wanted to go back to stock rom but once i get into download mode the phone not loading the rom ODIN stays in DO NOT TURN OFF THE TARGET!please help get out of that and use my phone again!the Base Rom i Used on custom rom is XWJS5 v9.6 with Firebird Kernel
Thank you for your time
close odin 1 click, unplug phone leave it in d/l mode, open odin plug phone back into usb, you should see a com port then like 7 or 3 or something. then hit start. Sometimes I have to repeat process 3 or 4 times before odin works right. if it isnt doing anything unplug it, remove battery put battery back in hold volume buttons down when u plug it back into usb and should go back to d/l mode. make sure odin is opened first.
I ve tried all these the problem is that I am at Phone - ! - PC and its hard to get to Download Mode but after many tries I all of a sudden I get in that mode then nothing more I can do!
Does Odin recognize the phone when you connect the USB cable when your phone is in download mode? Also which OS is your PC running? I was having an issue with Odin not pushing the stock rom and I had to start it as administrator in Win 7 to get it to work.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes DOES recognize the phone but not pushing the ROM on it!I am on Windows 7 and i always run ODIN as Admin!
Any ideas?
I've heard Odin can be flaky and may take several attempts before it will work. I would keep trying. Also possibly change which USB port you are using on your computer and see if that helps. I was in this exact same scenario last week. I would turn on the phone and get the computer/phone/exclamation point of death screen. I couldn't get the phone to boot or into download mode without using a JIG. Finally on about the third try Odin worked for me. I started Odin as admin and almost as soon as I plugged in the phone to USB I hit flash and it worked. Best of luck...
Odin is not flaky. It works if you follow instructions. It's the user's fault, not the software.
Anyway, this is probably the ten millionth time I've posted this in the last hour, but here's how to get into download mode if nothing else works. If this doesn't work, you hard bricked your phone and would need a JTAG flash.
Loggik said:
Unplug the phone from the computer and remove the battery, SIM, and external SD if there is one.
1. Open Odin one click.
2. Plug the phone in (without the battery in the phone). Do not press any buttons, especially the power button.
3. Press and hold the volume rocker (holding down both volume up and down).
4. Insert the battery while holding the volume rocker.
5. The phone should boot into download mode. You can then let go of the volume rocker.
Now wait 30 seconds (if you press "Start" too soon, it will not work). Then press "Start" and your flash should finish.

my phone is in download mode but odin hung once i unplugge and plugged back in ever since phone isnt see by odin or pc?
Yes, as I stated in my post above; you must reboot your phone every single time you go into Download mode. What I mean by that is that if you go into Download mode and plug your phone in, then unplug it, you cannot plug your phone back in unless you reboot your phone.

Didn't realize that you weren't the OP. Regardless, I was referring to you.
Anyway, this is a more serious case than I thought. Have you used the AIO Captivate Tool? If so, did you install the LibUSB drivers? Those will disable Odin from working (I'm probably going to PM Bay_wolf sometime soon about that...).
Do get everything working again:
Plug the phone in while it's in Download mode. Open the start menu, right click on "Computer", and click "Manage". In the left sidebar, select "Device Manager".
There will be a dropdown labeled "LibUSB Devices" or something with the word libusb in it. Find that dropdown, right click the Samsung USB Device or whatever it's called and select "Update Driver Software...". Then select "Search automatically for updated driver software."
An alternative is to just use the "Flash to Stock" option in the AIO tool. This and the above is assuming that you had used the AIO Tool and installed the LibUSB drivers previously. If you have not, then you may have to try and re-install the Samsung drivers. If that doesn't work, ask to borrow a friend's computer for now to flash back to stock, because this happened to me before and I didn't know how to fix it, but I was about to re-install Windows anyway so I never figured it out.
im on xp and pc sees my cappy but odin execution 1.00 is stuck on examing files is there another version i should be trying? if it helps this is what i was trying to get off my phone when the crap hit the fan http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940330 and i tried to put paragon 6 on and it kept erring because i needed to do a odin job first on it
I finally managed to turn my phone on last nigh by doing the following:
1.Open Odin
2.Get in download mode (it took me many tries but finally I made it)
3.Disconnect phone
4.Reconnect phone
5.Choose the PIT file
6.Uncheck Auto Reboot
7.Hit Start
After that I took out the battery put it back again and power up.the phone will boot but not show the main screen it will only vibrate!then i used the AIO pack to put it back in recovery mode and i reinstalled the Custom Firmware I was using. Now is on and working again!I really dont know now if I can flash back to stock!

did you use thee pitfile came with odin in the all in one or did you select another pitfile if you used a differnt pitfile then comes with odin 1.00 that might be my issue
No no I dont use this on I use one I had on my PC.
I think the problem is a write protection as I can see when i connect the phone it displays a CDROM drive when I click on it, opens ok but I cant write anything on the phone.and every time I try to use ODIN to flash to stock it stays in DO NOT TURN OFF THE TARGET and nothing happens!
Any ideas on how to get back to stock firmware?

Is my Galaxy Note Bricked?

Ok here is what happened.
- I rooted my galaxy note successfully.
- Installed CWM through the steps described in this forum
- Installed Titanium Backup
- Restored CWM 5.0.0.2 APP with data through Titanium backup (which was from a LG Optimus 2X)
- Pressed Restart into Recovery Mode (Note: I did not FLASH the Clockworkmod Recovery, i simply pressed RESTART INTO RECOVERY)
- Phone asked for super user permission, i gave it
- Phone restarts, is stuck in a black screen with the botton 2 buttons lighting up
- Was stuck there for 5 Min so i took out the battery
- Now phone will not power on... with or without wall charger plugged in.
Is my phone bricked? Is there any way to fix it?
Many thanks.
What about download mode? Can u get in?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA

are you saying you restored from a non note backup image?
take the battery out wait 30 minutes and see if you can get into download mode
Could be probable that your bootloader is replaced, so yeah the chances are that you have soft bricked your phone and yeah there are definitely ways to restore it, so don't worry.
But see if your download mode works. press volume down+home+power all at a time.
i took the battery out for 30 minutes. Put it back in.
tried to activate download mode, there is no response.
normal power on wouldn't work either... sigh

Do you have a usb jig?
no i don't. should i go find one of those phone fixing shops? they usually would have something like this right?
I did some research on the USB Jig, is it sure to put the phone in download mode for a soft brick?
if so, i can just buy one off ebay or something.

Yes... i think you flashed another bootloader which does not support the three button combo. but download mode should still exist. The USB Jig will bring the phone to boot to download mode. It should work... if not, then you have a real bricked note
Try this:
- download and install KIES
- download and install Android SDK
- download and install Odin3
- open CMD (in Windows --> Start and type cmd)
- open Odin3
- remove battery in phone
- connect phone to pc via USB
- reinsert the battery in phone
- type in cmd:
Code:
adb reboot download
- looking for "added" in Odin3 (and Com Port)
- flash a stock rom for the SGN (better 3 parts and with *.pit)
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't work. I guess i'll try the USB Jig tomorrow at a phone fixing place and if that doesn't work i'm not sure what i can do
Can you atleast access recovery mode by pressing volume up, home and power button?
..
I cannot access the recovery/download mode by using those button combo. The phone is totally non-responsive. Screen remains blank and buttons do not light up.
did you ever solve this issue?
so what happened... any update?

Endless Reset on Galaxy

Hi All, i have a several problem with my phone.
I tried to install cyanogenmod, with no results. The problem becomes when i tried to go back to the previous android (the original).
I tried a lot of times change it, but now i can't do anything because the phone restart automatically just turn on, and because that, i can't connect the phone to my computer via usb (the time between a restart and another is about 5 five seconds).
Other thing that i like to refer is that the phone can't start in download mode (i can do that before, via odin, but now that solution doesnt works since the last android change version that i do).
I hope that one of you can help me please, i don't know what i can do.
PD: sorry if my english is bad, i'm a spanish-speaking

Maybe i dont understand good, do you say that i have to remove all (including the battery) and then press power button literally for a minute (without the battery) and then try to put the phone in download mode?
I have to say that my phone is unable to enter in download mode from factory (i can access to download mode with a modification with odin, but now i can't do that).
Neither can connect my phone to the pc, because restarts in less than 5 seconds and the pc is unable to detect it in so little time.

Broken Screen- unsure if rest of phone works

Hi,
A friend gave me their old i8190 which has a broken screen. They haden't used the phone in a while.
It makes a noise when I turn it on, and the softkeys light up, but the screen is broken.
However, when I plug it into the PC- it doesn't come up as a device.
I do not want to buy a replacement screen (cost around $70 US) to find out it's broken elsewhere.
How can I determine this- is there anyway to mirror what should be on the screen? The previous owner doesn't know
You can try to start it in download mode, flash the 3 button combo for recovery (and maybe a custom recovery), reboot in recovery and connect with adb. You will be able to browse the device internal memory and you'll know if cpu and ram works ok.
If you have a rom with usb debugging enabled by default you can run apps using adb (and take screenshots): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4567904/how-to-start-an-application-using-android-adb-tools
Also check this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13326806/enable-usb-debugging-through-clockworkmod-with-adb

Well I'm a bit lost- I'm using the 3 button combo (Home+Volume up+ Power key). Is that combo correct?
Without being able to see my screen, how to I connect with adb?
It makes noises like my PC detects the device, but nothing comes up.
I do have special USB drivers for my I9310 installed- could they be conflicting or anything?
i8190 doesn't have the VolUp+Home+Power combination active by default. You have to start in download mode (VolDn+Home+Power, followed by VolUp) and use Odin to flash a patch to activate the combination for recovery (you'll find the patch here on the forum). If Odin doesn't detect your phone you probably have some other problems except the display.
After you flash the patch you can use VolUp+Home+Power to boot into recovery. When you are in recovery adb is active (even in stock recovery). Just type "adb devices" and you will see your phone.
I don't know about the drivers.

I keep trying the combo (VolDn+Home+Power, followed by VolUp) but it doesn't seem to show up in Odin. I don't need a patched Odin for it to work do I?
How long to I have to wait between VolDn+Home+Power & VolUp? And is VolUp by itself?
Sorry for the obvious question- but I've been trying for hours without any success.

You just need Samsung drivers for odin to detect your device, not sure if your special drivers is the problem, try downloading this one
Should be around 5 seconds, holding it any longer wont do anything so just continue holding if you're not sure, then just hit vol up only
Thanks for that.
It might be completely broken
I've tried two computers- installing the Samsung drivers, and using Odin, but the phone isn't showing up at all.
It's strange, because it sounds like it does work. I switched it on- and the volume buttons seem to make noises, and I even somehow took a photo.
What could be wrong? Thanks
I really don't want to throw this phone away.
Like I said- it seems to work (takes photo's) but nothing comes up when I plug it into any PC... I don't want to spend $100 on a new screen either, to find out it's broken.
Please help me out.

Yeah, it sounds like you should be able to connect it to odin. Have you tried different usb ports / different computers?
Remember to plugg cable to phone after key-combo.
