Bell Galaxy S Vibrant

I live in the USA, using AT&T, and is shopping around for Galaxy S phone. The Captivate is the obvious choice under the Galaxy S flag. I just noticed the Galaxy S Vibrant from Canada today and I am really interested in it, especially because of the front facing camera.
How would I go about purchasing it? How would I get it working under the AT&T carrier? How is Edge, 3G, and voice, etc? How would future rom updates be installed? What are the down sides to buying the Vibrant versus a local Captivate?

I have a Bell GS and on Bell it works great. Though after a firmware upgrade yesterday is is acting a bit wonky, might have to do reset.
To use it on ATT in the US you would have to buy it outright from Bell or other brick and mortar store that carry Bell phones. ie. Best Buy/FutureShop.
There is an unlock app for GS's and supposedly works on the Bell I9000, haven't tried it myself, no need atm. This will allow you to use a ATT sim card in the phone.
To update, you can use Samsung kies, supposedly what they will be using to push updates to GS, you can get that from samsungs web site. From what I have found so far you need to be in the touch wiz launcher to use kies. only matters if you use 3rd party launchers.
Not sure how the FFC will work for you. That might be dependant on ATT?
Your best bet, if you decide to get one. ROOT and make it your *****!

It would be 100% compatible on AT&T's network. In fact, it's even more compatible because Bell doesn't have a 2G network you can switch to to save battery life.
ROM updates come officially through Kies like normal, although you should also be able to flash most international i9000 ROMs you see floating around here, just make sure before doing so. Flashing a Captivate ROM just because you're on AT&T is a surefire way to brick your phone.
To buy it you will likely need to use something like eBay because even if you purchase it outright almost every store won't let you leave unless you have existing service with Bell. You can unlock it for free though with the method that I am sure is detailed on the Android Development board somewhere.
The obvious downside to buying Bell's Galaxy S is it comes at full retail price (over $500 Canadian) and in all likelihood you're probably going to get a model with the three button download/recovery modes disabled, making flashing ROMs risky. Hold out until the end of this month to see if Samsung Canada announces more about their promised fix for this.

I am using one on AT&T as well and it works fine. Best part is that AT&T doesn't force you on their limited smartphone plans and you can put it on a cheaper unlimited plan.
I got mine in a trade for a BB Torch but you can find one on eBay or maybe talk to a Canadian member here to see about picking one up for you. I would suggest you have them check for the 3 button recovery to make sure it's working before they buy it though.
The downside is warranty issues if it breaks but as long as the 3 button recovery works you should be able to recover from a bad flash and the hardware seems pretty solid so far so no worries there.

Based on the responses, I am definitely going with the Bell/Canadian Vibrant. The only trouble I have now is just finding one to purchase.
How do I post my intentions here to let people that I want one? Who is a reliable dealer here?

I am interested exactly the opposite: I want to buy an Epic from Sprint (with no contract) and to use it in Canada (on Bell or Rogers) but only with a data plan, no voice (as I will use the SIP / VOIP). If Bell or Rogers offers only data plan, should this phone (Epic) works out of the box (or with the unlocking code) on the 3G network of Bell / Rogers, simply inserting their SIM card into the phone?

the sprint version is CDMA, chances are it's CDMA locked to sprint
CDMA unlocking is done on the server side, is not on the phone like GSM
you need to register your CDMA IMEI number to the say... Bell or Telus, if they see it on their server it's allowed they will let you in, if they see it listed as not allowed then they wont register the phone into their (Telus/Bell) CDMA network

I use it on Rogers network and it works great. No problem so far.

I am not a tech, but the 4G/3G is also depending on CDMA? Or CDMA concerns only voice? Is it 4G/3G a standard (the same on Sprint and Bell and Rogers) that doesn't depend neither on CDMA or GSM?

we don't have 4G support yet in Canada
CDMA is for voice, but if you can not register the phone in the network for voice, you will also not get access to data
to have data you must have a voice connection
not a phone requirement but a phone network carrier requirement

Anyway, I checked right now with Bell and Rogers and no one offers only data plan... But what they will do with iPad and Galaxy Tab that doesn't support voice, but only data? If I will take the SIM out the gTab and put in a phone (Epic or Vibrant or Captivate), will the phone be able to work on 3G?

Yes, but if Bell already sells the dataonly plan for iPad, why they don't sell a dataonly plan also for a smartphone?

because they can claim a Tab is "not a phone" (whatever...)
and a Galaxy is a "phone"

I currently have a I9000 and am on ATT's network in southern california. I'm all but satisfied since my coverage is poor indoors and in some areas because of the lack of 850 band support.
I'm looking to move instead to the I9000M from Bell to get the added 850 3g coverage. Were you able to get a phone, root, unlock it and upgrade to froyo 2.2? Can you tell me about your experience so far including testing for 3-button boot into recovery? Where and how much you got the phone for out-the-door? Thanks.

[Q] HSPA 850MHz on International (Non Bell) Samsung I9000 (firmware)

I've been reading on that thread for few days and one question raised in my head.

If I buy an International (European or other version) of the Galaxy I9000 that doesn't support frequencies HSPA 850MHz from scratch, do you think it has the same hardware as the Bell Canada one ans that it's just the firmware that enable or disable those frequencies?
If so, it may be interresting to try flashing one Internal version of the I9000 with the CSC and Phone file from firmware UGJH2 and see if it enable the 850MHz HSPA frequency.
If that work, that means that International and/or European unlocked I9000 phone are exactly same hardware and that, We could buy them and use them with Bell and other providers in Canada instead of buying a Bell one.

if you want the I9000M (3g 850/1900/2100) you can get it off ebay if you don't care about the 3 button issue, but if you do care about the 3 button thing, you can ping me

So if I understand it correctly... the only option we have is to buy a I9000M from Bell and do the 3 buttons fix from that thread in order to be able to unlock and upgrade...

correct in all counts
yes, it's kinda stupid they have released more than 8 different variants of the same phone, each of them with just minor changes in hardware/software
like with TV, no TV
with Front Camera, no FC
with Upload speed cut off, Full speed upload (USA AT&T)
with Flash, with no Flash
with more storage, with less storage
with keyboard, without keyboard
with these radio bands, without that radio band
with... bah just too many
I have no clue how they keep up with all the different branches of the same tree

nope, they do have an activation fee when you purchase it, even when you but it off at full price, the total is roughly $650~680 including all the taxes, activation, shipping materials, shipping, packaging, all the other crazy fees the Bell and the government charges

Just by curiosity.. Do you know a version of that phone that work with 850MHz but include the flash for the camera?
That would be nice to have a flash included with it

The flash is on the CDMA Galaxy S for Verizon only. I don't think this device can be unlocked but anyways I don't think you would want a CDMA smartphone in Canada.

Yep and since CDMA is way slower than HSPA, that would be useless....the only time we use CDMA is in the regions where HSPA isn't working...

Bell or Telus will not allow anyone to hook up another carriers CDMA phone. This is NOT an option.

In relation to this same question somewhat...What about a hardware transplant from a Bell Vibrant to a European i9000?
Does anyone know what radio chipset the Bell Vibrant uses and what radio chipset the European i9000 uses? I've seen two different radio chipsets for the i9000, one from Qualcomm and one from Triquint:

Unless I'm reading all 3 disassembly wrong, they have conflicting info in regards to the radio being used. Maybe the radio chipset being used is dependent on the region where the i9000 is from? Can any one confirm? I plan on purchasing an international i9000 to replace my bricked i9000M and would like to see if I could transplant certain parts to see if I could get the 850 MHz via hardware. I plan to disassemble my bricked Bell Vibrant once my toolkit comes in and take some pictures so maybe it'll be of help to people in the future.

not sure where you got that from but i worked for Telus and we hooked up quite a bunch of USA verizon/sprint CDMA phones online.
we used to do a IMEI check first to make sure it was not blacklisted before signing them up for a plan with their phone

is there an easy way to find this out without taking apart the phone?

Thats pretty weird then. CDMA phones don't even have an IMEI. That is a gsm/hsdpa specific number.....

a couple of times we did get some black listed ESN from verizon/sprint, also denied on those cases
most of the time they are okay, and can easily be joined to the network, the only trouble was finding the re-programing instruction for those Odd phones as we knew by memory the models we sold, but anything weird will take some times.
we always charged extra for that.

Okay so quick update and something quite interesting. I'm disassembling my Vibrant right now and the piece where the antenna connects is labeled i9000T. More to come in a new thread.

I decided to see if Rogers or Tellus would work (as somebody told me they use 1900 more than 850), and when the rogers guy tried his sim, it was the same story. THEN he figured out that for this phone, you have to manually enter the APN info for the canadian carrier. He tried it on my phone, and I started picking up EDGE.
I immediately called bell tech support for the same info, and they refered me to the website. I entered the bell APN info in the settings menu and I now have HSPA on bell in Canada on my european i9000! Spread the word!

[Q] At&t Tab Won't hold signal

So I purchased an LTE Galaxy Tab about 3 weeks ago and have been tossed all around by At&t customer service Samsung customer service and just about anyone else who could possibly know anything. I work for a retailer have have talked through my inventory director to an inside Samsung rep as well.
The problem is that whenever I drive further than say 5 miles (or 8ish km) the tablet will drop the signal and I will have to restart or cycle airplane mode to get it back. This happens regardless of wifi conditions or signal strength. I have tried 3 different SIM cards and also done an exchange for a new device. I haven't sold any of these to see if someone else has had this issue. Anyone else having this problem?

Nope metro Cincinnati and my Galaxy Skyrocket works fantastic. I actually got a little further last time and was able to stream video as a test all the way to work before it dropped off. (15 mile trip taking me right through downtown Cincinnati.) Of course when I got there I lost it.

May need to flash the modem again.

I dont really know. I have a system dump but dont know if the modem is kept within those files.
you could always just flash the stock ATT firmware again?

I've had 2 of them do this with and without root from day one. Is re-flashing really going to do anything?
Here is some more info. Samsung customer support told me to re-create the stock APN and see if that would work. Well the tablet won't stay on any other APN except the default. i have also tried a "pta" APN (like on the skyrocket) and the "phone" APN (just HSPA+).

Can this device the 4G one work on tmobile Hugh speed network?

Probably not. T-Mobile's and ATTs 3g bands were different frequencies (1700mhz vs 850/1900). However, in some places T-mobile has started to use 1900mhz and unlocked ATT devices will work. This seems to be random right now and even T-mobile support may not be able to tell you where.
Or you can do what I did, and get nrvate's CM10 build for the i957 (I'm a noob so no links for me yet) then flash this radio: Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip (Google it). I get full HSPA+ and have clocked DL speeds up to 19000kbs. Of course YMMV, and no guarantees that it will work for you, won't brick your tab or kill your pets.

WHOA!, are you saying you are getting HSPA+ on TMobile!?
can you PM me a link how to do this. I have my tab rooted, but no roms installed yet. Do you have the links for the roms? What recovery are you using to flash?

Yeah it works well with the only problem being the power usage is rather high, and drains faster in idle. After looking at logcat I think this radio doesn't go into idle mode properly so keeps sucking power when not in use. Running it's a little less usage (maybe 30 min less) but on idle it drains in 24 hrs. Turning off 3g helps but for me I can live with this to get 20mb down. When ICS for the i957 finally shows up it should be possible to see a better radio get put in CM10 (which is still in early development, but that's what the ROM below is based on).

This is great to hear. I am going to hold off for now, as I would have to open a TMobile account, and I really dont NEED to have this until I start traveling in a few months.
Now what would be AMAZING, is if somehow this tablet could work on verizon. I have a huge corporate account with them and it would cost me next to nothing to add the tablet to the account, assuming it would work. I didn't think it was possible, but then again, I didn't think TMobile high speed connection was possible either.
Any idea if there is a way to get this working on verizon? Or if anyone is even trying?

I can tell you that is impossible. T-Mobile uses GSM and Verizon uses CDMA. You can only put a SIM card device on GSM carriers (TMO and ATT).

I can tell you that is impossible. T-Mobile uses GSM and Verizon uses CDMA. You can only put a SIM card device on GSM carriers (TMO and ATT).

Or you can do what I did, and get nrvate's CM10 build for the i957 (I'm a noob so no links for me yet) then flash this radio: Tmo_SGH-T989_UVLE1_radio.zip (Google it). I get full HSPA+ and have clocked DL speeds up to 19000kbs. Of course YMMV, and no guarantees that it will work for you, won't brick your tab or kill your pets.

I could not tell you as T-Mobile doesn't have LTE yet. TMO will use a band that the i957 can support, but it will probably take another radio (if any) to work. I've seen 21mb down from HSPA+ so even if I never see LTE I can't be too disappointed

Yes it is. The device was locked at ATT and AFAIK there is no other way other than going through a unlock service. I used cell​unlocker.ne​t. $25 and your IMEI gets you a code in a few hours.

As I said that is impossible because the carriers use incompatible setups. SIM card carriers (GSM) will only work with other SIM card carriers. Verizon uses CDMA with no SIM cards. The networks themselves are completely different and hardware cannot be hacked to work. Most of the world uses GSM with SIM cards and if you travel overseas, you'll need a GSM device to use unlocked devices on any networks. Blame Verizon for picking a standard that 80% of the world doesn't use

Has anyone tried flashing the tmobile high speed radio but on the current rooted stock ICS rom instead of the cm10 rom?
In other words, i have a stock rooted sgh-i957 on samsungs ICS rom and i want to be able to use tmobile high speed network (HSPA+). Does anyone know if thats possible?

[Q] Incredible S (Bell Carrier) Running 2.3 question

I am very new here so I apologise if this sounds like a really dumb question.
I have an incredible S from the Bell network which I brought solely because it is compatible with 3g 850mhz network unlike the normal Incredible however it has not received any updates since 2.3 and I would like to upgrade it.
My first question is if I root and remove the Canadian software will I lose compatibility with the 850 mhz 3G network or is this a hardware change?
Secondly I cannot seem to figure out what Hboot I am running. Where do I find this out?

Hello, welcome to xda
1. Network freqs is hardware, so if your device support 850MHz as long as it is an incredible S it will be able to rom any rom for our device
2. Turn off phone, take battery out, put battery in, then hold down power and vol down until it takes you to white screen. It should say there

Hey Arathis,
I bought my Inc S from Canada too, Here in Australia, I upgraded to gingerbread through the network, but after a while of 'umm-ing and arrr-ing' I just rooted my phone, and never looked back since. It's not as scary as you may think

Bell isnt offering upgrades past 2.3. However, if you want to stay official, there is a Canadian RUU but Ud need to search Google for it (region should be (NAM) Canada or something similar).
To determine HBOOT, power down first, then reboot but hold down both power button + volume down to get into Bootloader. HBOOT is displayed there.
