[Q] Possible to hide the default messaging app? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have some items in Handcent blacklisted.
I was wondering if it was possible to hide the original app because those text messages aren't hidden in the regular SMS.

Just delete the apk from /system/app

and this wouldn't interfere with handcent? I've always came to believe that Handcent somehow relies on the original app.
Can anyone who has done this tell me if everything went smooth? If so I'll just go into Titanium and freeze it for a few days.

Replace a System App

How would you replace a system application such as SMS or Keyboard
With root. You cannot replace system apps in any version of Android without first doing it on the computer and after the phone has been rooted.

You download something like chompSMS from the market. You could probably find swype too, if you searched.
Swype isnt in the market, but you can sign up for the beta (check Android Central for the story)
i've installed chompsms but is there anyway of turning off the vanilla SMS prog so that i don't receive my texts in 2 progs ?
I haven't rooted my N1.
cheers.
I've just turned off notifications in the vanilla app, i'm assuming this may work.

Handcent SMS duplicate message

Whenever I get a message using Handcent I also get a duplicate message in my stock msgr. How do I disable this? I have Handcent set as my default msngr.
have you tried going into stock app then
menu > settings > auto retrieve > off ?
might only apply to MMS tho and not regular SMS...if that doesn't work, dunno
On the stock msgr, you go into settings and turn off the notifications under settings, like sound, vibrate etc.
if you are rooted and wanna use handcent sms.. rather than the default then just use root explorer go to system/apps then delete the mms.apk

How can I get the native mms to stop popping up with handcent mms? I've tried disabling auto retrieve along with removing the mms.apk, but it still pops up.
Any idea on how to make sure the native mms doesn't popup when receiving a new message?
default messaging application > settings >In the notifications settings , uncheck the notification bar.

Be careful with that, you will most likely kill mms, unless one of the recent handcent updates has changed something.

I remember reading that deleting important apk's like that via root explorer can be dangerous. If you decide to delete it that way, make a nand backup first.

I've been using handcent for quite some time now. I simply go into the stock SMS application and turn absolutely everything off, including auto-retrieve, notification sounds, notification vibrate, etc.
My settings are backed up through Titanium Backup, so when I flash a new ROM, I just re-apply the backup of the settings. Works wonderfully for me.

Tried this, but then I can't get MMS (messages with photo attachments). Everything else works, but MMS stops working.
To begin with, I am only getting messages duplicated when they come through a gateway such as [email protected]. The ones that come direct from other people are usually fine and I get only 1. I've searched and searched for the answer for this and can't seem to find it.
Does handcent load super slow for you guys. Had to stop using because of that.

[Q] Remove SMS/Messaging app

Hi anyone know how to remove the SMS/Messaging app from the Galaxy S (rooted), dont see any point in it if i use a differenr app for txt!
stevef1
you will lose the mms function. I tried before. Just remove mms.apk and mms.odex from /system. Sms will still work though through other app. I use handcent

how did you get the function back? i dont really want to factory reset my phone again...
i did back it up through titanium backup but i left it to restore it for 30mins and it didnt restore it.. :/
its weird because my phone gets the messages because i they still come through on texty on my laptop but my phone doesnt say that i have any messages and i cant view them through anything on my phone

Textra.... Beware!

Just a warning that there seems to be no way of backing up or saving your messages from Text's AT ALL!
So if you just back the app up on titanium like I have been your fine... Until you want to switch SMS apps.
Then you'll find you can't export messages from Tetra to anything else. They seem to force you to stay with them!
Just a warning.

It can't find them for me, neither can I using file explorer. Have you backed up and restored using titanium?
I think that's what the issue is and I've seen a lot of people mention on here that that's what they're doing (as I was), so thought I'd warn them.
You're backing up "Messages (SMS & MMS)" in Titanium Backup and not the Textra app itself, right?

Because Textra keeps all your messages when backed up and restored by titanium, I had been freezing the default meaning app on the last few ROMs I'd tried.
This was fine until I want to swap to something else.
The problem is, all my messages are in Textra, but you can't get them into anything else or back them up.... I'm stuck using it!
i juse easy backup app which backups my text , call logs etc to either the internal memory , dropbox or google drive . It does a restore as well. handles everything from setting the default app etc .

My point is though, I bet it wouldn't back them up from Textra... Only if you have them in your default SMS.

It does backup from the textra app as well. Have been using it since Jan 2014 without any problems. Infact just did a backup and restore last night coz i rooted my phone again.

Nope, just tried it. It backs up Textra with messages in it (same as Titanium), but doesn't back up messages FROM Textra so you can put them in another app.
Thanks anyway though!
I think my messages are stuck with Textra.
Confirmed from the developer, there is no way to backup messages or export messages from Textra, so everyone make sure you backup up your sms separately or you will never be able to leave!
This isn't true. I just backed up my SMS from textra using SMS backup and restore from the Play Store.. Textra itself doesn't have the capability built into the app... I have used textra, hello SMS, evolve SMS and others and I am able to restore them all. This seems to be a case of operator error.

Edit: why is this in apps and themes?

It is user error because I backup apps with titanium backup and it'll restore all my messages and they even show up in the stock android sms app. Its annoying because I flash a bunch of roms and when i restore it'll show up in the stock messaging app and hangouts before i set textra to my default app. I've been backing up and restoring since november and it shows up on other apps when i restore with titanium backup.
Yes, but you guys clearly don't freeze or remove the default messaging app when using textra. I've read loads of people on here say they do and didn't want them to be in the same position I'm in.
You can backup from the default SMS app, and from every other SMS replacement app on the market, but not from Textra. That's from the developers mouth.
Well I haven't had any problems using Textra yet... I'm using it since I got my Nexus 5 in November 2013 and saw that Hangouts replaced the default SMS/MMS app.
In fact I'm not SMSing so much anymore and backing up SMS' ain't that important for me, but your post alarmed me a little. So I installed some of the other SMS apps from the Play Store. Every single app displays all the messages in my storage, so on my case it seems like I have a common SMS storage and I'm certain that Helium Backup & Sync offers to backup that storage.
Maybe that's an option for you?
Btw I'm running Stock 4.4.2 rooted with Xposed Framework enabled, just in case it matters

All that would do is remove my messages from Textra. I want to get the messages out and into hangouts but it won't let you.
I just deleted Textra app data and uninstalled. Installed Chomp and all texts were still there. Uninstalled Chomp and reinstalled Textra.
Hangouts, my only other installed sms app, has been frozen since day one.

That will be because you didn't freeze or uninstall the stock SMS app.
The lesson is, don't freeze or uninstall your stock SMS app if using Textra, or you'll never be able to move them to another app.

Thanks for info.

[Q] Google's Messenger Vs Messaging app

I just installed Messenger - Android Apps on Google Play on my Moto X (2013) Verizon Wireless (Android 4.4.4) and using "Titanium Backup" I "Froze" my native "Messaging" app (green icon).
Yet when someone texts me Messaging app (green icon) reappear from frozen, what am I doing wrong? How should I deal with it? It doesn't look like Messaging app (green icon) is active as I switched my "Default SMS app" to "Messenger", is there something else I need to "Freeze" as well?
Do you have the Google Messenger app set as the default SMS app?

Yes, I do. I didn't even know app can unfreeze itself too.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Are you sure you froze the right app? The green Messaging app is the stock standard android messaging app, not specific to Verizon. The Verizon Messaging app should be a different app, probably red icon.
Also why bother with TiBU to freeze you can just try disabling from settings. Settings -> Apps -> All -> Verizon Messages -> Disable
Alternatively when you get a text and Verizon Messaging app pops up click the android Recent Apps/Multitasking button, long press Verizon, select App Info, and Disable.
Only need TiBU if stock disable feature is unavailable.

Yes, I'm sure I froze right app, maybe I mislabeled it by saying it's Verizon when it's not, but I did freeze (multiple times) a green icon app "Messaging" aka (Messaging 4.4.4-26 (SMS/MMS PREFS)".

... and that's exactly why I attempt to do it using "Titanium Backup" and unfortunately was not successful(
OK well yeah that was confusing because there is a completely different app called Verizon Messages (has some good ratings, you might wanna look into it).
Anyway, we agree you're talking about the stock messaging app. Unfortunately it seems the stock app is integral to the 4.4.4 system, which is probably why there's no disable button and why you can't freeze it either. And even if you did manage to freeze it, it's likely you can't receive messages at all using other apps.
The solution seems to be to simply turn off notifications from within the app: Messaging -> Settings
See here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/77712/sms-problem-on-moto-g-after-updating-android-4-4-4
If you're dead set on going all out war on the app you can try using a file explorer with root privilege, find the messaging app (it's System -> priv-app -> MMS) and try renaming it, but that would be a hollow victory as like before it would probably inhibit other apps ability to receive SMS. so just turn off notifications.

Messenger is just a wrapper or fancier interface to the stock MMS app. If you physically remove MMS.apk (or sometimes messaging.apk) from /system/priv-app, then Messenger won't work at all.
You have to have the stock mms app on your system for Messenger to work (at least on 4.4.x)
