So finally you can root 2.1. I've been interested in a custom Rom for my hero ever sincei heard about it. Any suggestions on which Rom is right for me?

Just giving you the heads up, Android development section is for posting your own Roms, mods, and etc.
But my personal favorite ATM is Fresh 2.1.1 Basic, but incredibly fast and customizable, and Flipz is a very active supporter. There are other great Roms too, but Fresh was my first.
I highly recommend DamageControl -- I update it to the fresh toast kernel so you can overclock. It looks a lot like stock but performs 10x better. The updating of the kernel is easy to do, and outlined in the thread /showthread.php?t=690238
Play with damagecontrol first, then if you want Overclocking (or, more correctly, reclocking), give the kernel update a try-- it's just basically flashing a file on top of the damagecontrol rom. Either way, it's way better than stock and still has sense if you want it.
Could i hey more information about damage control

It depends.
Me, I don't like HTC Sense (or rather, I got bored of it), so my personal favorite is Darchdroid 2.6.4. It is AOSP and like the Droid or Nexus One.

Read this. It has all of the information about the latest damage Control ROM
FreshToast is my personal favorite. Extremely fast and stable. Use it as my everyday rom when I'm not trying to fix roms with A2SD issues.
Is there a guide on how to install Roms?

usually the base instructions are included on the first page of the custom rom thread. That said you usually do this:
1) install a recovery image, I use this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=672324
place the image of your choice - the only difference is the picture which is shown - on the sd card and flash the image into the phone by using the instructions here
2) choose one of the ROMs, I use the 2.1 roms and think you should try the fresh ROM 2.1.2 which is stable yet has the newest base without the overclocking. Go here and read the info and download:
http://geekfor.me/new-release/fresh-rom-212/
after you place the downloaded zip image on your sd card, you will need to place your phone in recovery mode by doing this:
a) powercycle down (press and hold the red hang up button for a sec until you get the menu and press power down)
b) next, hold the menu key down and then press the red hang up key briefly, you should feel the buzz of the phone starting but continue holding the menu key for about 5 secs until the recovery menu comes up.
c) At this point you will want to either nandroid backup your build which I think is not really necessary because your config will be so different going from 1.5 to 2.1. but you can if you want to restore back to a 1.5 rom
d) Next you need to wipe the data off the phone by choosing "wipe" and choose restore to factory default - this will remove all data from your phone
e) go to the flash from sd option and choose the rom you have placed in the SD card.
you need to confirm the flash by pressing "home" and away you go.
d) you then need to press "reboot" and the phone will shut down recovery mode and flash the rom. This initial flash will take a while, some ROMs take 3 mins some take 10.
After this you are up and running, if not, post questions in the forum for help.

1. Make sure you are rooted.
2. Find the ROM zip of your choosing and put it on the sd card (not in any folder)
3. Boot into recovery
4. Backup/Restore - Nand backup
(Optional if you want to use aps2sd - 5)
5. Partition sdcard
- just follow the prompts
- I reccomend also doing SD:ext2 to SD:ext3
6. Wipe
- wipe data/factory reset
- (optional a. wipe dalvik-cache b. wipe SD:ext partition) - only need to do if you are going to use apss2sd
7. Flash zip from sdcard
8. select your rom zip
9. press home to start flashing
10. reboot system and wait. Some roms take quite awhile to load up the first time (10+minutes)
Hope this helps. I'm sure there are other threads that explain it better than I have. Just search and you should find something.

I personally like Aloysius, nice color, very fast, frequent updates!!
"Rooting" 2.1 had nothing to do w/ making custom ROMs simply because you could pull apart the rom.zip and make a custom one even w/o having root. Gaining root just enables the people w/ 2.1 on it to free their phone basically

I want to Flash/Install different ROM on my phone but I don't have 3 button recovery... I also believe I will need to root it? Not sure if I've read correctly...
I'm guessing I first need to get the 3 button recovery working? Do I need to download something for this? Will I need to root the phone before this step, or afterwards?
Then do I use Odin (1.3) to install the new ROM?
I have downloaded the Android SDK (for adb), a fix file for the 3 Button recovery, Odin 1.3. Is there anything else I will need to carry out all of the above?
Very grateful for any help.
I have international I9000 and I used these instructions, they're in Russian, you can translate them with google
searching for the file that is mentioned there I could find this, which is the same
rooting is another thing, this one is for replacing bootloader
another manuals

Ok, so I've got the 3 button recovery working, rooted (not sure if this step is necessary?), unlocked... is there anything else before I flash a newer ROM to the handset? (of course, I will make sure I've backed up the phone too).
Also, if you could suggest a ROM for me to download. Would like the latest stable release of android (I'm guessing one of the variants of Froyo? Currently running Eclair).
Thanks.

I still can't seem to be able to access the ClockworkMod Recovery though on rebooting the handset (after renaming the original update.zip on my internal SD card to aupdate.zip) - Any suggestions?
Update .

I ended up installing JV1 from samfirmware, but am wanting to downgrade it to a later Froyo build. Or a custom ROM... not sure yet.
How would I got about installing a "ROM Kitchen" ROM manually? I can't load ClockworkMod Recovery to install from SD card.
Edit: Just going to reinstall Eclair and install the ROM through CWM that way.
Hi small question someone might know how do you do a carrier firmware backup? Before you do the reflash?
Are you sure you're pressing the right combination?
Press volup + power + home
And release them when Samsung logo appears, or it will just reboot again
Yep, that was the combination I used. Managed to get it all running using the latter method.

I flashed MIUI Gingerbread like 20 minutes ago.
I am using a Canadian Milestone btw.
I used the guide on this forum and everything seems to be going well. However when I try to make a phone call it says "mobile network not available".
The reception bars are greyed out and have a little X on top of them.
Please help as I am doing this for my brother and I would hate to give him back a phone that can't even make calls anymore.
Thanks in advance.

It should work without any problems.
List out how you flashed the rom.
I did exactly as the guide says. I had already rooted my phone before so I skipped that step. Installed Openrecovery, flashed the .sbf file for Canada.
Then I made a Nandroid. Then I followed this to a T.
1. Download the desired custom rom
2. Place the zip file on your sc card /openrecovery/updates
3. Boot into open recovery using power + camera (power + x), volume up + camera
4. Apply update.zip
5. Wipe data + cache + dalvik to clean your milestone, so it will be fresh for the installation
6. Go back to the main menu
7. Navigate to apply update in open recovery
8. Select the desired file and apply it
This is the guide I used by the way.

Perfect. Can you try flashing the baseband files for telus from here. Same way as you flashed miui.
I presume you used Androidiani openrecovery ( AOR ) for flashing.
Flashed it and now have full bars. Thank you so much man, I was sweating bullets for a second there.

No probs. You may need to enter your apn manually if you can't get 3G to work.
Also prefix your topic heading with [solved].
My aunty recently gave my sister a Samsung Galaxy S. I find it laggy and so I want to flash a good rom. I already rooted it. I tried to flash new rom through rom manager, keeps force closing. Stock 2.3 with odin and download mode. Download doesn't work. Apparently it is because my phone is from Optus Australia. I am currently running Android 2.2 Froyo. I have always been a fan of Cyanogen Mod and so I want to flash it.
And so I enter the ClockWorkRecovery and to flash new rom, it has to be called update.zip etc. The ROM file for Cyanogen is update-cm-7.1.0-GalaxyS. Is it possible to rename this to update.zip so I can flash rom through ClockWorkRecovery? Will it work?
Link to ROM: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/32492-cyanogenmod-7-for-the-samsung-galaxy-s-v710-9-oct-2011/
you can try as in this order...
1. rename the ziped rom file as "update.zip"
2. put it on the root drive.(do not put it in any folder or not in the micro sd card)
3. now go to CWM by pressing vloume up + home + power button
4. select "apply /sdcard/update.zip"
if your CWM does not show it on the main manu ->
5. select "install zip from sdcard"
6. select "apply /sdcard/update.zip"
7. select yes
done it should work...
I dont understand....

Totally agree: flash with Odin the last stock firmware for your area and then root with CF-Root. Now you have the CWM Recovery and are able to flash your file with any name.
You'll need to get into download mode (try adb reboot download after enabling usb debugging on the phone.) If that works, then you can flash the 3-button combo fix, and then flash an alternate firmware using ODIN.

Tried. Install Rom Mangaer, flash ClockWorkMod. Rebooted. Click install from SD card. The green bar goes to half way then shows up with something aborted. Failed.
Seems a corrupted file.. Have you checked the md5 hash is correct?
Maybe a JIG would help you to run in download mode if it is your problem...
I also think that first of all should be flashing a stock gingerbread using odin, next flash with odin a gingerbread kernel, semaphore, talondev... And then go into recovery and flash the rom you want
Hello XDA.
Being a tech illiterate noob, I rooted and tried to install the latest nightly build from cyanogenmod on my Optimus 2x. I gave clockworkmod superuser rights, booted in recovery mode and went on with the install.
Everything went fine (I think) until the phone rebooted. When it started, as usual, the LG logo is shown. Normally another LG logo comes up after the first one, only with an purple animation behind it.
When this comes up, it completely freezes at the very first frame of the animation. I tried waiting, I left my phone for over an hour, but nothing changed.
As previously stated, I am pretty tech illiterate, so of course I didn't make a copy of the original rom.
Now I can boot into something called Android system recovery <3e>, which says:
"Android system recovery <3e>
Android system recovery utility
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
__________________________
Formatting DATA:...
Formatting CACHE:...
Formatting MISC:...
"
And yes, of course I tried selecting that option, but neither of the keys work. The volume keys work as up and down keys, and the home button shows/hides the options.
I tried downloading the original rom from the giant thread of stock roms, but if you try clicking either of the links, you will see that they are broken.
HELP!
Have you tried the power button yet? Because the power button allows you to select things.
From there wipe everything (data, cache, dalvik) and make a fresh install of cm.

Some of the links there are broken, so I can't manage to complete the tutorial.
Also, I am very sorry, but I do not understand what you mean by that last part.
Let's see, you rooted, installed ROM Manager and Clockworkmod Recovery from within ROM Manager, rebooted and from Clockworkmod Recovery (Black Screen with Blue letters, lets you wipe and install zips from SD Card), you flashed the ROM, is that correct?
Can you boot into Recovery by holding the Power + Volume Down buttons? (hold for about 20 secs, until you get to the second LG screen)
If you can get to the recovery mode, try flashing another ROM.
