Hi, i have senn around some apps are using restriction for 3g only (like skype) and also the tv program for the bell vibrant. I were wondering, is there any way to "emulate" 3g over wifi? (making the phone think it is on 3g when it is actually only on wifi?).
Thank you very much
interesting question
it'll be nice to have some app that could do that
So... anyone ever heard of such thing? Is it even possible?
thanks
This is something I would love to find as well. Any leads are greatly appreciated.
Skype works over WiFi.
I don't really understand what you mean. I use Skype on my Galaxy S and everything works over WiFi.
But if the app only work if you're online via 3G like Navigon Select (T-Mobile 3G network to check if you're really a T-Mobile user) than you can't emulate that because you must have an IP that were given you for 3G.

T-Mobile doesn't need you to have a T-Mobile 3G connection to know that you are a T-Mobile customer, at least not technically. The notion that it might be tied into their user verification system is a discouraging one, and I'll admit entirely possible, though I hadn't considered it.
Anyways, I was looking for 3G emulation for T-Mobile's visual voicemail, not Skype. Thanks for the info.
Would love to have this for Nexus S where Internet Calling(VOIP) requires Wifi into the Original System, but on Cyanogenmod it works over both Wifi+3G but i prefer to stay into Original OS plus having VOIP call over 3G

I have a quick question, I know that Cingular is slowly rolling out their 3G network, for their new video service. My question is, is that hard wired into the phone or software driven. meaning, my 8125 has edge built in, when 3G hits my area, can it be enabled by a rom update, Or do you have to buy a phone that is made for 3G? Thanks!
Its a radio device built into the phone, So no you will not be able to use 3g with the wizard.
Sorry
3G is definitely hardware based, so you'll not be able to take advantage of the 3G speed with your Wizard. AFAIK the US 3G system is (surprise surprise!) incompatible with the rest of the world 3G system, so a Universal wouldn't even be able to be used on Cingular. I'm not sure if there is an HTC CDMA (rather than UTMS) based device available yet.
there's plenty of HTC CDMA devices. the 6700 (either sprint or verizon), the Treo 700w, or the craptacular motorola Q. all support eVDO (which apparently is 3G. and honestly, even $45 a month for "faster" internet is extremely ridiculous, i mean do u need the pages to load in a heatbeat? or do you really download songs directly to your phone? the only reason to get it would be if you used services like Orb or slingbox to stream media. i mean, does 3g add any better voice quality? or is it just internet? if its just internet, i'll pass, and i can keep the $45 a month for something else.
i think it's insane that it cost as much for 3g as it does for my cable at home...
From what I read, the reason HTC opened an office in the US is so they can release phones here the same time they're released overseas. We'll see how much bull that is when hermes comes out. (Hermes is basically a 3g UMTS version of the wizard)

Well, there is video calling, which, although cool is basically just a gimmick at the moment (plus you've got to rely on the other person having a 3G phone also). Sure, 3G technology is cool and all, but until it becomes as affordable as a normal phone contract, then it's not gonna catch on as quick as the networks would like.
thats not adding better voice quality. so i'm gonna take that as a no. and thats a shame.

Correct, you're still using a GSM voice bearer and GSM codec for voice so regardless of the bandwidth you have you're limited to about 12kbps in a phone call.
That said, the VoIP services such as Skype *in theory* would benefit from the increased bandwidth as they use raw IP to make the call.
Firstly, let me thank everyone who does all the SUPERB work on this site, developing software, ROMs, and tools that us normal users would otherwise never see...
Here's my problem:
I got a Kaiser with the shipping AT&T ROM on it - I'm in the US.
I wanted to get rid of the bloatware and other crap that AT&T puts on the device, and take it back to an HTC ROM.
The problem is, I can only connect to the EDGE network, and I'm only getting 40-60k transfers - I know that with my Samsung Sync (my previous phone) I was getting 1.3-1.5Mbps using the same site to test (http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed)
Is this a limitation within the HTC ROM? If so, does anyone know if newer HTC ROM's (perhaps even with WM6.1) will fix this problem, or do I HAVE to use an AT&T ROM to access the 3G (HSPDA) network in the US?
Thanks in advance for your time!!!
Do you see the icon 3G and it changes to H once you're accessing the internet? If no, you might want to check if you correctly config the connection.
I myself don't trust http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed when it runs on PIE web browser. I did the benchmark on 2 different types of connection, at&t HSDPA and Verizon FiOS* Wifi, and it comes up nearly the same speed 1.3-1.5Mbps.
*I have 15 Mbps download package.
Yes, it DOES do that (Mr President...lol)
What site do you prefer to test the speed of your 3G connection? I was hoping to use Speedtest.net, but doubt that they support mobile.
So, I guess that you're saying my connection is probably just fine, but that the site is problematic?
Thanks for the quick reply, btw!!

I don't pay attention too much on speed. But, there are many ways to confirm that you're connected to 3G network.
If the answer is yes for any question below, then you're 3G.
a. Tethering internet via your PC on "internet sharing" mode and make a call at the same time.
b. Stream any audio broadcast with bitrate above 196Kbps.
Enjoy.
Um, where do you live? Pretty much only the major cities have 3G deployed, and even then, it's no guarantee. I live in Minneapolis where 3G was rolled out last November.

I'm in Pittsburgh - I know for certain that I'm in 3G territory, as I just got the Kaiser a few weeks ago, and before that, was using a Samsung Sync tethered to my laptop, and getting 1.3 - 1.5 MBps....
UPDATE
Must have had a lousy signal where I was trying it before - I tried it again, using the same site, and was getting 500-600k - so I guess it's hitting the 3G network, but for some reason, changing the 3G icon to an H, presumably indicating HSPDA.
All's well...can one of the mod's please lock this thread? Thanks!

Any one else here using the HTC Diamond on Rogers network here in Canada?
I just purchased my Diamond a few days ago to replace my HTC 3600P. My 3600P connected to Rogers 3G network perfectly fine and I was able to get broadband speeds.
Now, with the Diamond I can only get GPRS (G icon on the phone) and Edge (E icon on the phone).
I am not sure if this had anything to do with it, but unlike the 3600P, when first setting up the Diamond it ask if I wanted the phone to auto detect the network and auto configure the phone. I selected yes.
In the phone settings under network tab, the network selection is set to Automatic. Under the Band tab, both select your network type and select your GSM/UMTS band is set to auto.
is my phone setup correctly, or is it that the Diamond doesn't work with Rogers 3G network only GPRS/EDGE? If this is the case now, could a ROM update fix this?
I really need broadband speeds on my work and am seriously considering returning the phone, as I specially asked the store I purchased it from here in Toronto if it would work on Rogers 3G network like my HTC 3600P and they said yes.
Current Diamond models (EU and Asia) do NOT support North American 3G bands. There was some talk from Rogers that the 900MHz band would be support but for now GPRS is as fast as you will get with your Diamond.
Just to add confirmation to what NikoL has said.
No 3G with the Diamond on Rogers.
Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated!
My question now is will my ASIAN/UK diamond ever work on Roger's 3G network? If yes, any idea how long this will take?
I really need broadband speed on my mobile phone for work. I still have my HTC 3600P which works fine on the Rogers 3G.
I am trying to justify keeping the phone or returning it.
Worth holding on to?

To be honest buddy, it all depends on Rogers if they support that band that your missing. If they arent going to enable it on their network then you will never get 3G on the Diamond that you have now. So its a 50-50 chance they may or may not...probably better off asking them if you ring them. Im sure they will tell you if they have any intentions of enabling that band on their network.
Now if it was me, id return it and wait for the North American version which should be released next month hopefully. But this is me personally...im in the UK and i couldnt live without 3G myself...blazing fast on my nokia n95 8gb which i sold and at the moment im having to make do with GPRS because my nokia 8600 luna only does GPRS.

What are you doing that requires 3g?
Edge and GPRS don't imped stuff like email sync, syncml, or minor web browsing.
If you need to use remote access like RPD or UVNC then sell the phone. Roger's isn't about to turn on 900mhz as that requires changing the match on existing infrastructure. It makes far more sense for them to push toward LTE tech rather then waste it on whats going out.

I work in the streaming media industry, hence I definately require broadband on my mobile phone/device.
For now, I guess I will keep using my HTC P3600 which works perfectly fine on Rogers 3G and hope that the north amercian version of the Diamond will support Rogers 3G or on the tail end, that a ROM update for the Asian verision will 'turn on' the required freq to support Roger's 3G.

I would imagine the N American version of the Diamond would support 3G in Canada...as for a rom update to enable the asian version that you have now to use 3G??..i doubt it very much as its a hardware issue. The diamond you have is missing that 3G attenna.

You are correct about the ROM update. I called HTC Canada and confirmed this with their support department. I guess, I'll be putting my Diamond up for sale on ebay (as my local dealer refuses to take back the phone - last time I'll ever purchase from them, as I specifically asked about it working on Rogerrs prior to purchase) and wait for the North Amercian verision.. or see how the new 3G iphone stands up when it is released here on July 11th.
Hey guys,
I was wondering, which one of the different US providers would you recommend to use with an imported unlocked diamond2?
I'm currently with AT&T, and I'm having a lot of issues to connect to MediaNet... For some unknown reason, the phone looses its connection:
- every single time after either a reboot or using wifi
- on time to time, randomly without any specific reason
My main concern being: it's a pain to get it back! It takes several reboot and retry to re-setup the data connection.
I was wondering if some of you have actually experience better result with other provider or even with AT&T... (note: i m on a pay-as-you-go plan for phone and data)
Thanks,
Kandjar
I, too, am using Diamond2 with ATT and I'm ok with it. Granted, I've given up trying to use MediaNet on this phone but not really missing it.
I'm on T-mobile with the $5.99 unlimited data (T-Mobile Web). It's now $9.99 Web2Go if you are starting a new contract with limited data. Everything is working fine and the other day I got my email working on the diamond2 through the $5.99 plan.
No connection problems at all.
Same here with T-Mobile and the T-Zones plan, my call quality is pretty good with no drops & edge has descent speeds.
Wow, ok, once my pay-as-you-go expired, I'll definitively check T-Mobile!
AT&T data plan is slow and not very stable for me...
The main reason I need it is: mails!
I got so addicted to the 'read mail everywhere' plan, it's scary... When it doesn't work, it's bugging the heck out of me
I found in the 'phone setting' that it's possible to change the baseband; so instead of having them set to 'auto', I'm trying to force them to be:
'gsm' and '1900+850' to see if there is any improvements.
In any case T-Mobile does sound a lot cheaper...
I m currently paying $100 for 400 minutes (good for a year) and $20/month for 100MB... That's about $30/months.
Thanks for the replies

Edge on T-mo has really good speeds here in CO. That's why I don't mind not having 3G. Soon enough manufacturers will be making quadband 3g handsets. I hope.
Any who kandjar if you need help with the data settings if and when you switch to T-mo just post up. If you search google for T-mobile wireless configurator you can get the settings by selecting any WinMo phone in the list ut you have to change some things.
Edit*
Disregard that last part about the configurator. The D2 finds the settings automagically for you. But you still have to change 1 or 2 things so it'll work.
That's cool, thanks!
By the way: does the youtube app work with T-Mobile?
It doesn't seem to work at all with AT&T...
Or does it only work with 3g?

Youtube worked on my Diamond2 with ATT. I don't have a data package with ATT, but I have wifi in my complex and I can watch Youtube on the Wifi.
As well as sending/receiving emails.
True, I should have been a bit more explicit..
I also managed to get it to work through wifi...
I m just wondering if this work with data plan (through medianet ...)

Yes it works fine on T-mobile edge. Maybe AT&T edge is a bit slow? IDK? This is on T-zones might I add. Not T-mobiles full web service. Who needs that with opera available?
OK so I have a friend on AT&T with an iphone. Apparently AT&T locks down a lot of stuff so that it only works over wifi and won't go over their cell data network.
I haven't really seen that kind of an issue with Sprint so it may be moot however, is there an app on the market (or for rooted phones) that allows you to trick your phone into thinking it is using wifi when it is actually going over the cellphone data network?

I don't think you'll ever need anything like it. When the need comes, we'll see something I am sure. They really don't care what kind of data we push. I think Verizon may limit Skype to WiFi, but that has probably been hacked.
