[Q] New Firmwares for I9000(8.9.2000)? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a lot of new Firmwares reported at:
http://twitter.com/SamsungFUSNews
Are these the new Froyo releases?

They all look like old firmware, I think samsung-firmware has a copycat.

Yes, no new firmwares there (just carrier variations of existing ones).

Thanks for your replies.

i9000 Firmware Update Question

Hi,
I am glad I found this site, excellent source of information.
I have a question regarding updating firmware on the Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
My phone currently has firmware I9000XXJF3, looking over at samsung-firmware it seems that the latest version available is I9000XWJM2
My question is, will my phone be compatible with this firmware version? should I not go beyond the I9000XX releases? Languages don't mean much to me personally because I only use English (hopefully XW has it!)
If I do install I9000XWJM2 will the other 'tutorials' work for me as well? (the lag fix, etc)
Your help is appricated!
those XX doesn't mean anything related to the specificity of the model (i9000). In other words, yes, you can flash the new firmware without problems. In general you should make sure it's for i9000, but not in the name of the firmware, cause it's rather confusing. You should look for a thread of this firm and check it's for your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733368
Yes, tutorials still works!

[Q] European Firmware on Asian SGS?

Hey guys!
Just wanted to know if it's possible or okay to flash an Asian based SGS with European software...I was interested in checking out the beta releases with Froyo but they're only available as European firmware.
My phone was purchased from the US but it was apparently sourced from Singapore since it had Singtel stuff on it. I flashed it to generic Asian firmware and then updated it with Samsung KIES which gave me the Asian firmware upgrade (DXJG4) free from Singtel customizations (yay!)
And another question...which firmware do you guys recommend to stick with until Froyo is officially released? Like which firmware do you guys experience the least "black screens" or stalling/lag? I don't want to be installing random fixes just yet so I was hoping there's a firmware out there that has less or none of these issues.
Thanks in advance!

You can, just avoid the US/i9000M/i9008/Korean ROM's. But with XXJG1-JG5 roms on my singtel, I found the GPS didn't pick up a single sat.
I recommend XXJM5 currently.. GPS is usable (but still drifts, and doesn't respond when making sharp corners well), and everything which works on other roms seems to still work.
In regards to Froyo, don't bother. It's a fun play for a short time, but there are very few benefits, and plenty of serious disadvantages still (because JP1-JP3 still are in an early testing stage).
Also, it isn't known how service centres deals with flashing other regions firmware (and if they care enough to cancel warranty).
I also have an Asian SGS and im wondering if w/c is better JG5 or JM2.. Im still on our latest official firmware at JG4
can anyone share their experience of using european firmwares on asia models. i want to know too

[Q] Base rom, modem, and CSC

I've been using Darky's ROM for a while, because it seemed really user friendly to install and had a lot of support for a new Android user. As I'm getting a little more comfortable, I'd like to create a custom ROM using the Rom Kitchen.
My question is, can someone clarify the difference between JVB, JVH, etc? Are these just firmware revisions (2.3.3, 2.3.4)? Also, I'm unsure of what the CSC and Modem are for...if I use the wrong one, will this prevent me from getting service in my country? I am on Bell Mobility in Canada...which CSC/Modem should I use?
Thanks!

Jvb, jvh etc are not different revisions, just different builds of the same firmware version, usually made for different regions. Each one is tweaked slightly differently to read the forums to get peoples opinions on each one.
The modem is the radio for 3g and wifi. Again, each is slightly tweaked for different regions so get views on which is best for you in the forum.
The csc handles the localization and adds the carriers and apns for different regions. Again, look in the forum for the one that covers your region.
Both modems and csc files can be flashed easily over any ROM from cwm.

Thanks, rschenck! For gingerbread, we currently have JVB and JVH correct? Are there any others?
So, if an app says "ported to JVH" does this mean that it won't work on JVB? Assuming that they are just different builds of the same firmware I would have assumed that it would work. Do you know of anywhere I can get information on which builds are currently released/available?
I understand the CSC and Modem clearly now, thank you

It means it will definetly work on jvh based roms. As for any other build, you would need to ask in the thread of the person who posted it.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but.... Is there a stock 2.3 Gingerbread for US TMo Tab??

I have read and read thread after thread... after thread, and I'm confused...
Is there an actual legit Gingerbread update for the US TMo Tab that I can do through Keis or Odin, or is it an overseas version? And at that, will it pull files automatically, or do I have to DL, then install? And is that safe for the US TMo Tab?
I keep hearing about Overcome, and searched and read. Is it an actually 2.3 Gingerbread ROM, or a 2.3 theme? If it is a ROM, is it a full ROM with all working options, or more something I should wait on the official release for?
Thanks for any help, and links are appreciated.
I did searches and read a lot, but the more I read, the more unclear it became, so I thought this would clear it up for me...
There is an actual, legit Gingerbread updated that will work on a US TMobile Tab that can be installed via Odin, AND it is an overseas version (Italy release, specifically). You will have to download the files and install them. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073854 . Also see here for a modem switcher, as you won't be able to get 3G using the Italy build modem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=871021
Flashing is never completely without risk, but many people have done this successfully.
Overcome is a complete firmware replacement with many modifications. The latest release is based on 2.3, but I don't really track it, so I can't really say too much more about how well it works. See here for details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074759
(You can also get the T-Mobile stock modem from that thread without going to the trouble of using Roto's switcher.)
The Overcome Rom is a fully functional build of Android 2.3 (Alterbridge also has a 2.2.1 Rom out there)
It has only minor minor bugs at the moment (which you likely wont even notice), but for the most part is a fully working build.
If you follow the steps written up at the bottom of Alter's Gingerbread ROM, you shouldn't have any troubles.
To answer the original question, there is no official gingerbread for any US carrier's tab, and probably won't be.

[Q] Regional Firmware Differences? (Or Which ICS F/w To Choose?)

I have a UK Galaxy Note N7000. It shipped with an un-rootable Gingerbread 2.3.6 ROM, so ages back I followed one of Dr Ketan's guides and downloaded a pre-rooted Gingerbread 2.3.5 ROM and flashed it. And for whatever reason, I never got around to flashing anything later such as ICS. Now however, I'm getting frustrated with Gingerbread and it's limitations, especially for things like proxies. I'm a bit hesitant to try a leaked Jelly Bean ROM, so I was thinking I would go for a stock ICS with root.
I looked at the Stock ROM Thread and there's loads of stock ICS firmwares to choose from. If I had never rooted my phone, I think I would have gotten "N7000XXLRK---4.0.4/12.07.24-N7000XEULP5---Download--United Kingdom / Ireland" but there are newer ones. For instance "N7000XXLRU N7000OXELR6 Download - Russia" was from November 2012 and XXLRU would be newer than XXLRK by my understanding (and in theory should have more fixes/optimisations/stuff). But what problems could I get with a Russian firmware? It'll still have English as the language on it I presume, so will it be operator branding or pre-installed apps that make it "Russian"? There's also a Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India ROM that has the same codes, but different download links - will there be any difference amongst them?
I have tried searching for the answers to this, which is how I found the firmware naming convention thread however, the 2nd last digit is supposed to be the month, so I don't understand how it can go above L, but yet these firmwares I've mentioned above are on R. So I find the more I read, the more confused I'm getting...
TL;DR:
What differences are there between regions for firmwares?
Is the newest the "best" or should I stick to one for my country, even if it's a little older?
first back up efs on multiple locations.,
A must do.
first b) Your from the uk, but is your phone:go dial *#272*youremeihere* and observe your csc, this is the csc that determines your country version software. You use other countries, but you will likely corrupt efs, which is why efs backuo is ultra important.
Second go and experiment.
Most differences are regionalization if roms, some special apps etc. All have English as a language.. Go experiment, see which one you like.
Mind safe kernel, wipe and non wipe roms, clean instslls on safe kernel
