Are Class 6 Cards Neccessary?

I have a Magic 32A, i purchased a Class2 8GB a while back, is it necessary to change it to class 6?

No, the class 2 card should be working fine, it's just gonna be slower.

Actually the class rating is for write speeds more than read. If your just using it to store music, video etc and not apps2sd or swap (why would you with a 32A?) than there should be very little difference.

their speed is directly related to the class.
class 6 goes 6 times faster than a class 1 and so on.
whatever you read/write on the SD will suffer from a class2.
FYI, gallery etc they all create thumbnails etc on the SD card (no matter is your using app2sd or not).
I would DEFINITELY not get a class 2.
Maybe a class4, but with the difference in price I dont understand why not a class6.

I found very little difference between class 2, class 4 and class 6 when using for storage. (music, photo etc) These where all of the same size for testing (4GB cheap) and there was no noticeable difference in any of them as far as opening music form the player or browsing the gallery.
I know here in Canada if you can find them class6 16gb cards are twicw as much as the class2 cards. I paid $52 for my 16gb class2 and the cheapest I can locate on in Canada is $111 plus shipping, so not that cheap.

A thing to remember, is that the class is the minimum guaranteed speed – not the maximum. So a class 2 guarantee you a speed of mimimum 2MB/s, a class 4 - 4MB/s etc. But the maximum speed is actually the interesting thing – and that depends wary much on the quality of the card.
So when you buy a new card – have the quality in mind. I’ll rather buy a quality brand class 2 or 4 card then a “no-name ebay” class 6, as the maximum speed of the quality cards is properly better than that of the no name one… ;-)

I have gone through a dozen or more cards and I can tell you class 6 versus a class 2/4 makes a difference. The size of the SD card also makes a difference, the less space to look in the shorter it takes. If you bought a $300 phone like me $35 isnt so bad to make the most of it. My perfect balance is the 16GB class 6 I use in my daily phone, plenty of space and fast for apps2sd.

stock class 2(?) 1GB upgraded to 8GB class 6 on cyan 4.0.4.
I noticed it has sped up a LOT, mostly noticeable when typing, I have turned on vibrate and its still faster.

[Q] MicroSD cards

So where are the good deals on MicroSD cards? I'm interested in at least Class4. What are you using with your GTabs?

I was wanting to hold out for a class 4 or better 32gb, but I don't think the included 16gb is going to last me much longer on it's own.
I have a class 6 8gb transcend card for backup that seems to read and write very well on the tab.
I usually just use google search and click on shopping to find good prices since they change constantly.

Thanks for the advice, I did see that shopping.google.com was probably the best way to find good deals.

The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. The Class number represents a multiple of 8 Mbit/s (1 MB/s), and it measures the minimum sustained write speeds for a card in a fragmented state.[11]
The following are the ratings of some currently available cards:[11]
Class 0 - These cards do not specify performance, which includes all legacy cards prior to class specifications.
Class 2 - Minimum of 2 MB/s performance. Lowest speed for SDHC cards.

Keep in mind that the class is based off WRITE speeds. I have a class 10 in my Vibrant, but only a class 2 in my Tab. That is because I tend to change what I carry on my phone more often than my tablet and thus it is noticeable. But if you are just going to load up 4 gigs of music and 8 gigs of movies and never change it, go with a cheap card.

I just ordered a 16GB class 6 for my Tablet. I'll probably be swapping out movies on a semi-regular basis, so didn't want to get just a class2.

Got a class 4 32GB from NewEgg. Works quite well and exceeds the rated transfer speed most of the time.

I'm using the Sandisk Class 2 32GB card and it's great. Sandisk cards always perform better at read & write speeds than the stated.
You're not going to notice any difference in speed..... not until you connect to a PC that is the only time when you will find a Class 2 is slower than a Class 6.

Yes, but you're not really going to gain much by using a class 10.

dang. anybody? i want to get a 16 gig card. can't find any info to the performance of a class 10 card on nexus one. i don't want anything less than 6 though which is still about half the 90+ dollars a class 10 would cost.

I use a class 6 and it's fine. If you want fairly cheap sd cards, go to microcenter. They have their own brand and they're much cheaper than the name brands. I've had mine for over 2 years and never had a glitch.

a little info for the general user...
well, after doing some research here and there, it seems there is little reason to get beyond a class 6 card for the nexus. there is very little chance you will even reach 6 through an usb cable. it seems the most common speeds are 1-3 MB's a second. i generally get a little over 2 MB's and sometimes up to 3. the only reason to get a class 10 card is if you manually take out your card and slap it in a reader and directly transfers large files such as mp3's and video, especially if you do it often.

as far as this SDHC card crap goes... THEY ARE NEVER as fast as they say.
I bought a class 4 card and it said on the dealership that it's 4MB/s transfer. Put it in the phone it went 1 MB/s.. WTF.. put it in a card reader... 1.5 MB/s.. returned it and demanded money back.
Then I got a class 6 from transcend. It's marked as 10 MB/s?! .. going on 4 MB/s sometimes 5MB/s in the phone. haven't tried it in the card reader though.
so my advice to you.. buy and return them until you are satisfied

Hello. I bought this phone last week and I absolutely love it. I've been searching the forums and can't wait to upgrade Android and install apps. This is my first android phone and I like how it can be customized. Before I do anything, I want to purchase a memory chip for the phone. I want to install and run apps from the chip but unsure of which to get. What size, brand, and class do you recommend? I have a 8gb class 2 from my old phone. Is that good enough? I'm thinking about getting either a 16-32 gb. Thanks.

I have a 8GB Sandisk Class2 for ~12€ from eBay. Works perfectly, even with Apps2SD.

I think a memory card class 4 or higher is reasonable!

I'm using a 16 GB Class 6 (14 GB free memory and 700 MB for Link2SD).
I bought a Class 6 because i heard that there might be some problems with Link2SD/App2SD and Classes less than 6...
I haven't any problems with it -> Ebay 40 €

If you are going to install a custom ROM then I would be careful about using a 32Gb card as I have heard of people having problems with them. As vqt907 has said, I would go for at least a class 4 card.

I have a Kingston 8GB Class 2.
Works very fast, also with app2sd.

I was considering upgrading my SD card from a class 4 to a class 10, for the speed improvement. So, I first tested my card to see what it's current speed was.
My card is an LD ( class4 8GB, bought off the street in China:
Write: 11.7 MB/s
Read: 18.0 MB/s
If my understanding of speed class correctly, this is class10 speed, not class4.
So I tested my Chinese "Kingston" - mostly likely a "ghost shift" chip, also class4 8GB:
Write 7.1 MB/s
Read 14.7 MB/s
This is class6 speed, not class4.
So, if you buy counterfeit chips in China (or online from China), you can get a class10 chip for very cheap, I paid $13 for my 8GB card. Just test the speed before you buy.
So check the speed of your card before you buy a new one.

best money-performance ratio .
You will not need anything more .

A proper branded Memory card like Sand disk, Transcend, Kingston and so on.
Never get fakes or non-branded ones as a 99% chance of pre broken risk is at your slide (personal experience)
A class 4 or higher would be reasonable.

I've been planning on buying a new sd card since the default 2gb is waaaay to small and I've got a few questions.
My current write/read speeds are 7.0Mb/s~ and 12.6Mb/s - which class is that?
How big is the actual practical difference between let's say, a class 6 and a class 10 card?

look like class 6, class number is write speed in MB/s. btw, there is no reason to buy class 10 duo very slow pc>phone>pc transfer rate. I can get more then 2-3MB/s (cable, wireless)

I get 25MB write/35MB read on my Transcent 8GB C-10

microSD Card classes

Hi guys. I was wondering if there are any issues making bootable SD cards for honeycomb or froyo and etc.
I am thinking of buying an micro sd card for the nook color.
which one of you guys would recommend?
16GB class10? 8GB class10?
I have seen all mostly using 8gb or 4gb at most. is there any issue using 16gb class10? please advice. thanks!

If they are same class then you should get about the same speed off either and all your looking at is size... if you want 8gb of space get the 8gb if you want 16gb of space get that one instead.....
I would not recommend using anything lower than a Class 6 card however.

I've run HC on a 8gb class 4 card for a while. No real problems. Maybe lags a little time to time, but that may also just be the rom.

I purchased two 8GB Class 10 cards. I use one for storage and the other for Honeycomb and it runs great.

Can the Nook actually even use the speed of a class 10? I know many phones can only fully use 4 or 6, with the only benefit of 10 being faster transfer while connected directly to PC. Class 2 is just slow on everything, of course .

I tried class 10 and class 4 16gb cards because I really wanted the space. I had all sorts of problems running on the class 10 once v04 honeycomb came out and the class 4 would run froyo and HC but it was so slow it couldn't be used. Some people seem to be using them but when I relaced it with a 8gb class 10 Patriot card, it runs great.
As to whether the nook can use a class 10, I don't know. I certainly know it MUCH faster with a class 10 than a class 4. I also bought a class 6 AData card but I have not tried it as a speed comparison. I was just tired of running back to the store to return them and test another so I bought two and started with the fastest one.
16gb might work with future versions but for now, I am sticking with 8gb cards.
I recommend the Patriot 8gb Class 10. The model I bought was the LX Signature Series: PSF8GMCSDHC10

Not necessarily. Class only implies a guaranteed minimum WRITE throughput, e.g. class 4 = 4MB/s, class 6 = 6MB/s, etc. that a particular class of card is capable of supporting. There is no guarantee that the tablet, camera, etc. is actually capable of achieving/sustaining that throughput rate though.
Read throughput can be anything, but are usually close to write speed, and another factor not as important most of the time with tablets is the latency of r/w accesses.
In the pre-SDHC days Japanese made(Toshiba - only Japanese maker) uSDs were the best in terms of speed and latency, followed by most Taiwan(various) made cards. Chinese(various) made cards were the worst by FAR. Also the pre-SDHC uSDs had varying r/w throughput and latency depending upon how "full" they were with the same general rule as above applying as to where manufactured. Presumably this is not the case with SDHC as the class implies that regardless of how full a card is that it WILL maintain that minimum write throughput.
8 v. 16: From the pricing that I've seen 2 8GB cards are cheaper than a single 16GB -> 8GB a better deal IMO. e.g. class 6 8GB are <$15 while 16GB class 10 are >$35 at least on newegg...
Another factor to consider is that you likely don't need a class 10 card unless you happen to have a very high performance/high resolution digital video recorder... i.e. class 2 is likely even good enough for most tablet video and other applications, but since class 6 cards can be had at reasonable prices(online, b&m are profiteeringly insane in their markups) those would probably be the best choice.

I'll let you know about class 4 4GB uSDs as a local b&M unbelievably has an approximately reasonable price on PNY(probably Taiwan) class 4 4GB uSDs, $10 which is cheap enough to pitch them if they're junk or use them for applications that don't require high throughput.
(On a side note most class 4 and class 6 uSDs work great with Nintendo DSes, which I'd suspect are MUCH more sensitive to throughput and access latencies... or so I've read...)

Is there a single thread recommending or comparing the various MicroSD cards, how they've worked for Froyo or HC booting/running off them? (i.e. a central posting of "this one works great..." or "this one is too slow"?)

seems like alot of 16gb class 10 are having issues with running froyo off memory cards.
might get a 8gb class 10 instead. and a spare 16gb class 10.
