Captivate Headache - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After I root my captivate I can't put anything else on the internal SD card because it won't show up on my computer(When I plug in the phone, it says usb connected, but nothing comes up in "My Computer" that it is connected) But if I do a factory reset, it will show up, but then it is not rooted...

Once it says USB connected bring down the notification bar and click on the USB alert and mount it to the PC then you will be able to copy things to your device.
Moving this to Q&A

This could also be because USB debugging is still enabled from when you did one click root. Go to settings, Applications > Development > and uncheck USB debugging... then try it

I've disabled usb debugging and clicked on the usb connected notification, it just sends the notification bar to the top again, still not showing up

Once you click on the notification it should ask you if you want to mount it. that did not come up?

Have you installed the Samsung drivers?
yeah i've tried installing the drivers. the phone isn't even putting the usb icon in the notification tray anymore. just starts charging and that's it. i go to usb settings/mass storage and nothing. any ideas?
I got that too, I just put the usb cable in another usb port on my computer and tadaaaa: problem fixed
I had this issue and read in a forum (not sure where wish I did to give credit) where u need to format your internal SD memory (the built in 16 gig SD) I did that and it started to work again.

I had/have this problem sometimes too. choosing "ask on connection" usually works. I find that if you select anything other than "mass storage" then exit out, then go back in and choose mass storage, it works again.
Usually only have to do it once after a factory reset or on a new phone
I find my connection to be hit or miss. The pc picks up the drivers fine but doesn't mount the phone as a drive. Kies is a pain to get going too. I read on here that you need .net framework 4 and also no file names over 16 characters, and without kies I think you need to be in debug mode on application settings. I still need to try the short file names and see if it improve it but I never really hook up to a pc anyway, my father has win 7 and I have kies on his computer. I have linux mint 9 on my own so I rarely get to fitz with it on a windows machine.

I'm having this problem, can't get usb debugging mode to turn off. It immediately turns on when I turn it off. It's as the just says, "yeah, you can uncheck it, but I'm gonna leave it on."

+1 It is fine.
Thanks, I love my N1 and intent to keep it for a long time
Just right click on the drive and select "EJECT" before turning off USB mass storage on the phone.
I forgot about that option
thanks

[Q] Whenever I connect USB, it says "MTP initilization". How do I change this?

[Q] Whenever I connect USB, it says "MTP initilization". How do I change this?
I want to be able to mount the USB storage from my notification menu whenever I connect the phone, not have it connect to MTP. Is there a setting somewhere that I missed?
1. Go to "Settings" > "Wireless and network" > "USB utilities"
2. Press button, then connect cable to PC
Seems this has to be done every time.

Yes, this is how I have been doing it until now, but it is starting to get old. I was just hoping that someone else knew how to change it.

This worked, thanks! I didn't think debugging would affect its connection type like that. I always assumed it was just for adb mostly.

Enabling USB debugging didn't work for me. I had to disable USB debugging to enable USB connection if that makes sense.

Two ways depending on what youwant to access/ move.
1) In setting/ storage there are 3 dots in the top right hand corner tap them and it will say USB computer connection, tap again and if you haven't already done so put a tick in MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) this will allow to see and move only media files ie video, music and photos.
2) Boot into recovery, select storage and then mount USB, this will allow whatever you want. Remember to eject the USB from your computer BEFORE disconnecting.
Hope this helps.

Not that I know off, I assume it was a feature in CM 7, only started with CM9.
You could reboot to WebOS
There is an app called USB mass storage watcher That works reasonably.

I have only used it a couple of times in order to answer a similar question it seems to do the job but is a bit buggy.,there is an earlier version by the same developer , to be honest I am normally just transferring media files.
Anything else I back up to box as they have now increased the file size upload limit to 250mb which covers me for all my Roms etc.

How do you transfer files to Phone on Marshmallow 6.0?

Got my availiable memory fixed, now I have 1 last hurdle.
How do you transfer files from PC via USB. I enabled USB debugging, plugged in
the N6 icon came up. Clicked on icon and its blank. I tried to make a music folder
and it said not available? I have done this a million times and now it wont work.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Pull down the notification bar and tap the USB for Charging (not the debugging one). It will be charge only, change it to MTP
worked
