De Facto List of NEEDED System Apps!!!!! - Droid X Android Development

The title says it all. After much time messing around, I've come up with the absolutely needed system apps for our Droid X phones to function correctly.
First off, I am running Rubix 0.5FocusedPATCHED with BBC Dark Status Bar and Clear Lockscreen on the official 2.2 OTA.
Here is the list of system apps which you "NEED":
THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FROM TITANIUM BACKUP. I RECOMMEND EVERYONE USE TITANIUM BACKUP.
As always, make sure you do a nandroid backup first. If anything goes wrong, you can either place the systemxxxxxx.apk into the /system/app folder, set the permissions and then reboot the phone. If it is a critical app you removed where you can't even turn on the phone or even open up root explorer and copy and paste the needed xxxxxx.apk into the /system/app folder, just do an "advanced restore" of "only" the /system from clockworkmod.

That .apk is in the file called rubiXFocused0.5PATCHED-search.zip which I installed after the main rubix rom. If u don't have rubix 0.5 installed, I wouldn't worry about it.
I think it is odd that this Fission AOSP ROM leaves Motorola Services installed when it isn't needed. I don't know if the final does but the RC1 did. Odd when it isn't even needed!

Here is a request. I am thankful for the list of things I have to have- but is it possible to also make the list of things that can be removed? Or replaced by an alternative?
In other words...
Code:
Removable...
blurhome.apk - must be replaced by another launcher in advance
or something along those lines. To me it just seems easier to know what it is I can remove- since I am going to be removing things.
anyways- this will still work great. thanks.

Directions for Best Android Experience :)

Ok, so we all want the best of the best of experiences for our DX superphone. Well, I am here to tell you how I have my setup.
The goals of the ultimate setup are to:
1. Keep as much privacy as possible
2. Ensure the best performance
3. Ensure best method to extend battery life
4. Ensure best feel
5. Ensure HAPPINESS!
NUMBER ONE:
First things first; we need to install the absolute best ROM right now. The ROM is called FISSION 1.1 by Team DeFuse. You will most likely have to re-root the phone after installing though. It is worth the hassle.
Known issues with Fission 1.1 but I'm sure will be fixed:
1. Compass Calibration
2. No custom battery profiles
NUMBER TWO:
We need to install all of our applications.
NUMBER THREE:
If you don't have them already, download the paid version of Titanium Backup and the application called AUTOSTARTS and very very importantly, DROID WALL, SetCPU, CacheMate and also very importantly, Advanced Task Killer
NUMBER FOUR:
Restart phone. Upon reboot, we will first open up Droid Wall and give it root privileges. Then, we are going to fill in both boxes with checkmarks next to only the applications which you use a lot and need internet access! It is good practice to look at what all apps need access to when installing applications. If an app like Notepad for instance needs Internet Access, we know there is a problem. It is apps like these, we don't want to have access to the internet.
You will also have to have checkmarks next to "Media Server", "Browser", "Calender", "Calender Storage", "Email", "Google Search", "Maps", "Market", "Messaging", "Street View", and "Visual VM". Those are the ones which need to be allowed in order to not cripple your Android experience. Obviously, the remaining apps are UP TO YOU.
You should manually disable and re-enable the firewall after every reboot! You then want to kill Droid Wall and the other showing apps with Advanced Task Killer. Once Droid Wall sets the firewall rules, they stick regardless if the app is running or not. There is no need to leave it running.
NUMBER FIVE:
Now, we are going to open up the program AUTOSTARTS! It will take awhile to load all of the apps of your system. This app makes it so you can actually reliably use ADVANCED TASK KILLER without the apps you kill AUTOMATICALLY restarting and thus wasting precious battery.
You want to disable all your 3rd-party user apps in EVERY CATEGORY except for the Widget Categories at the bottom. For the first app you disable from starting, you will have to give AUTOSTARTS root privileges.
Don't disable "Google Voice", "Visual VM", "Dialer", "usb", "Dialer Storage", "Battery Manager", "Battery Manager (Power Profile Receiver)", "Google Partner Setup", "Google Services Framework", "Voice Dialer" (If you use it), "Email" (If you use it), "Messaging", "Bluetooth Share" (If you use Bluetooth), "Contacts Storage", "Droid Wall", "SetCPU", "ADW Launcher" (If use it), "Launcher Prof" (If use it) or "Launcher" (If use the stock launcher)
Everything else should be clicked on and disabled except for apps which are your widgets on your homescreens and in the Widget Categories!
You are going to notice a crazy increase in speed from this!!!!
NUMBER SIX:
We need to reboot. Upon reboot, open up ADVANCED TASK KILLER. We now need to put some apps on the ignore list.
The apps I have on my ignore list are:
SetCPU, Messaging, Music, Google Search, Market, Visual VM, Beautiful Widgets, Voice Search, K-9 Mail and Google Voice
You would also want to put any apps which are related to any widgets you have on your homescreens on the ignore list too!
This will effectively make it so any app we close, IS CLOSED FOR GOOD until we ourselves initiate it MANUALLY.
NUMBER SEVEN:
My phone is a dud; well at least the CPU is. It won't go over 1100mhz and be stable regardless of how much voltage I crank into 'er. So, for my phone, I modified the 1.1Ghz .zip folder which is installed in the Fission folder of your SDCard when you install Fission. I modified the setscaling.sh in text editor and changed the following values:
Changed the 800mhz to 900mhz. You may or may not have to raise the voltages that they have pre-set for the 800mhz and 1100mhz settings. If you are not stable, just give each of them a couple notches of increase.
NUMBER EIGHT:
Upon reboot, we need to setup SetCPU. We are going to create 3 profiles
1. Screen off --> 300min / 600max --> OnDemand
2. Charging AC/FULL --> 300min / 600max --> OnDemand
3. Charging USB/FULL --> 300min/ 600max --> OnDemand
We then go back to the homescreen "of SetCPU" and change our values of what we want the phone to do whenever the screen is on and it is not charging. Here we want to put 900mhz for the min and 1100mhz for the max.
For some reason, even if SetCPU is not disabled in AUTOSTARTS, it doesn't load the values upon reboot. You will have to manually open up SetCPU just one time for each reboot.
IMPORTANT: If you want to OC higher or maybe not even at all, have at it. However, I still think SetCPU and the profiles I listed above would be great for you.
NUMBER NINE:
This may not be an option for some of you, but I like to disable remembering form data, cookies, cache, passwords, and history on my browsers.
The best browser to use "IMHO" is the new XSCOPES version 6.
If you like some other browser, just change the privacy settings to those of above to be safe. If you can't live without, then just don't worry about it.
NUMBER TEN:
Install CacheMate for Root Users.
In the settings we want to have checked:
1. Clear TA Utility Caches
2. Close CacheMate on Close
3. Clear Admob and Google
4. Clear Flash Cache
5. Clear Temporary Cache
Then, we want to have everything checked in Data Experimental and SDCard which is Relevant to our phone. For any app you don't have, don't put a check next to it. If you use apps like APMobile (Associated Press), you want to uncheck that and apps like it so you don't have to set it up every time you open the app.
I don't really like letting CacheMate run all the time being set to automatically clear on intervals. I didn't mention it, but I NEVER leave ADVANCED TASK KILLER run all the time either.
Uncheck power clear on the main screen and clear the cache ever day or two.
NUMBER ELEVEN:
Install ADW Launcher. It is by far better than LauncherPro. Only continue to use LauncherPro if you can't live without its widgets.
In ADW Launcher, we want certain settings done.
1. In Screen Preferences, we want to have both Desktop Scrolling Speed and Desktop Overshoot set to "0"
2. In Drawer Settings, we want animated drawer check, show app labels checked, fade app labels checked and for background color, I like to use a dark color with some transparency!
For Zoom Effect speed, set it to its lowest setting of 300ms
3. Under System Preferences, we want to check Wallpaper Hack and set Scrolling Cache to "Auto". Obviously, if you have widgets, you will want to check scrollable widget support.
4. In UI Settings, I check everything besides:
Dockbar, Closing folder, Secondary ActionButtons and Show Desktop Indicator.
I have AB Scale Factor set to "5".
After you get your homescreens all set up EXACTLY how you want them, backup both the desktop configuration and backup ADW settings. Also, make sure to do another backup in Titanium so when you restore ADW Launcher after installing a new ROM, it is exactly how you had it before.
NUMBER TWELVE:
Open up the program which is already installed called Spare Parts. It will be in your App Drawer. Don't install it again from the market unless you for some reason don't already have it in your app drawer.
1. I have haptic feedback and compatibility mode checked.
2. Set the "Window Animations" and "Transition Animations" to FAST
NUMBER THIRTEEN:
Do a Titanium Backup via Batch operation.
1. There are only 2 options in the batch operation options which you should ever need to use!!! They are:
A) RUN - Backup all new apps & newer versions
B) RUN - Restore Missing Apps with data
Run the backup every once in awhile to keep the backup of your apps up to date.
IMPORTANT:
When restoring apps, UNCHECK ALL SYSTEM APPS FROM BEING RESTORED!
The paid version gives you HyperShell which means you don't have to manually click each app when it is restoring. It makes the process very simple.
You also want to uninstall the older version of Flash Player and get the newer one from the market.
I have followed this guide for Titanium and have installed numerous ROMS for the Droid 1, HTC Droid Incredible and now the Droid X WITHOUT EVER HAVING ISSUES!!!
NUMBER FOURTEEN:
Go into ROM Manager and install the AOSP Keyboard under /Download ROM/Drod2169/CHANGE OPTIONS-Focused-1.0/AOSP KEYBOARD
You will automatically have to check FIXED 8MP AOSP Camera as well. That is the camera installed by default on Fission 1.1 so it won't hurt anything. Don't check backup data or wipe data/cache!
Also, I would install both QuickOffice and DX_Music.zip under the SDCard/Fission/Add-Ons directory. You obviously have to do this in Recovery!!!
The Music player will be 100% identical to the one that comes installed by default on Fission 1.1, but it gives you the option to pause play and seek tracks from the lockscreen!
NUMBER FIFTEEN:
Install any themes or mods which are compatible with your ROM and set up your sounds and everything else you like to do and enjoy your android device to its fullest
I know I probably missed a couple things but will update when I remember.
VIVA LA ANDROID
EDIT: I had Fission 1.0 for some reason. I meant Fission 1.1. I'd also like to point out that Rubix 1.0 is the same exact thing as Fission but with more optimizations and tweaks. I ran them both but slightly prefer Fission 1.1

Thanks a lot! That's all derived from months of obsessive learning along with trial and error
How dare you recommend Advanced Task Killer. You need to have your Android License revoke immediately.
Since we're talking about rooted phones and memory management, use Autokiller. It does what android already does natively, only better.
Nice write up, but do yourself a favor and get rid of ATK!

Please don't get caught up on the ATK thing. I don't want this thread turning into a pro or con ATK. One will however say that ATK without AUTOSTARTS is pointless. Due to AUTOSTARTS, ATK is once again relevant and really beneficial.
If the app AUTOSTARTS or anything like it wasn't available, I wouldn't tell anyone to install ATK. With my setup, any app we kill with ATK will not be automatically restarting thus wasted battery. That was the biggest issue with ATK before AUTOSTARTS was available. Now, anything we kill are only apps we ourselves initiated.
Apps left running do still use CPU resources. The latest privacy study of Androids apps show that 50% or so of the tested apps sent private information to advertisers in the background.
When the Android system only has like ~40mb of free system RAM available, the system will no matter what bog down somewhat. We can get rid of this from ever happening.
Just put the little green ATK widget on your main homescreen and one tap and your done. The ATK widget takes the same amount of space as an icon. It is simple and easy.
Doing it like this ensure at no point EVER is the Android system going to lag.

A few weeks ago. Excellent device too. I'm confident that the locked BL will be defeated. I'm running through some of luv2increase's mods now... I like the idea of being able to defeat autostart and place strict control over the apps I allow to run.

Yes it is an excellent device just today I posted on Twitter I have all the high end Android phones and the Motorola implementation of the Droid X is by far the best nice polish too. I been playing a lot with SetCpu profiles (removing bloatware via adb) and power saving settings and can get over 18 hours of heavy usage. Just starting to try these other ROMs out. As always if you need a tester or I can help you with something let me know I have been on Android a while now and have a lot of experience and a ton of apps.
A lot of you guys have no idea the asset that Sleuth is having a Droid X.

Alot of great tips in the OP. I actually run with almost this exact setup. I am using Rubix 1.0, though. Great rom. These tips will help tremendously with performance and battery life. Thanks for passing this along.

I'm holding off on a "Not Recommended" List for a bit until I get your guys thoughts on what should stay, be added, or be taken off of the recommended list!

You are here because...
You bought your Atrix and hate your cluttered app drawer, as well as the feeling that your phone has to fight with one hand behind it's back...hell, maybe blindfolded, too.
You want...
To get rid of as much of the bloat on your phone as possible. You want to de-Motoblur it. You want to de-AT&T it. You want to give it back its other hand, and maybe a small knife (not to mention doing away with the blindfold).
You don't want...
To modify your phone in a manner that would be harmful. You don't want a brick/paper weight/somehow broken device.
If this is you, keep reading.

> This thread is meant to help, not hurt. That being said, if, after reading this thread and performing some of the procedures detailed within, you do end up damaging your phone, neither I nor any of the others who contributed can be held responsible in any way. By reading this and performing any of the said procedures, you take full responsibility for what might happen to your phone.
> Upon writing this, the Atrix has only been officially released for less than 5 days. Devs are still working to free the bootloader, and thus most users are still only able to perform rudimentary modifications to the phone. Please realize that this thread may become obsolete as developers become more familiar with the device and are able to write all sorts of one-clicks/recovery flashables to remove bloat! This brings us to...
> I will be doing my absolute best to update this as frequently as possible in the case that new methods and/or new dangers arise regarding file modification on our devices. If this thread ever becomes obsolete, it will be noted as such in both the thread title as well as being the first thing in the original post (this).
With all that said, let us continue:
One of the most valuable pieces of information regarding modifying the Atrix's files comes from TeamBlackHat's P3Droid, known on XDA as jimmydafish:
jimmydafish said:
Hello my name is P3Droid,
We (TBH) have a lot of experience in Motorola phones and hacking. This experience dates back to the Razr days.
Here is a word of caution. Do no delete apps from the System partition, I would suggest you only rename them to .bak. When Motorola pushes updates each of the files undergoes a hash check, if the file has been manipulated or is missing the entire update will fail.
Until a system only sbf or similar is released, unless you make a back up with bootstrap and recovery, you will eliminate your ability to take updates moving forward.
Click to collapse
In summary: DO NOT DELETE APPS FROM THE SYSTEM PARTITION. This will result in the inability to receive official Motorola updates.
The thread from which the above quote was taken can be found here, and I would highly recommend that every single Atrix owner wishing to do any sort of file manipulation read it before doing anything else. It's only 4 pages, and well worth one's time.
So, how do we go about removing any bloat?
1) Any apps that are NOT in the system partition are safe to modify. Many have reported being able to remove apps by means of the standard Android applications manager. Details on this method can be found in this thread started by Fixter, who says:
Fixter said:
They can be removed by the Manage Applications settings. Very simple indeed.
Click to collapse
PLEASE NOTE: This method does NOT require root priviliges, and would be a very good place to start for more inexperienced users due to the relative ease and safety it affords. At the same time, it does not allow for access to some of the more deeply embedded apps/files you may wish to modify. This brings us to...
The Freezing Method
First suggested (to my knowledge) by acPIZZA:
acPIZZA said:
I suggest everyone that is rooted use TITANIUM BACKUP to deal with their bloatware issues. The pro version, which you will need, is only a few bucks and is worth it. TB allows you to 'freeze' bloatware apps, which to my knowledge just blocks it fro the system, but does not delete it. The apps you choose to freeze are also removed from the app tray - so no more clutter. This way when an update rolls around, you can run down the list and simply touch 'thaw' to bring those apps back to recognition. This seems like a much more efficient and easy way to go back and forth, rather than renaming the .apk's.
I apologize if someone already mentioned TB in this thread - I just skimmed quickly.
Click to collapse
In summary:
Use Titanium Backup's "Freeze" feature to deactivate or disable files. This method allows for the safe and long term deactivation of files in order to free up RAM/CPU resources, while allowing users to easily reactivate, or "Thaw"/"Defrost" the files if the need arises (official Motorola updates, requiring a certain functionality given by a file, etc). Note: This does not free up any storage on one's phone. It merely stops a phone process so that it does not consume RAM and/or processing power.
Prerequisites:
>Root privileges (procedure can be found here; thanks goes to designgears)
>Titanium Backup (application; can be found in/downloaded from the Android Market)
Note: The "Freeze" feature of TiBU is only available in the paid version of the app. TiBU Pro only costs $3.99, and is very useful beyond just what is discussed within this thread. (Trust me, I was hesitant to spend any money in the Android Market, but this has saved me countless hours of time and much of my sanity. It is well worth it.)
Procedure: (It's actually pretty simple)
1. Open Titanium Backup
2a. If previously unopened, click "Allow" on the Superuser dialog box- this grants TiBU the required root privileges
2b. If, for whatever reason, you do not grant TiBU superuser permission, don't panic- press the menu button and tap "Reload Application"; this should give you a second shot to give the necessary permission
2c. Alternatively, you can kill TiBU in a task manager and reopen it, also giving you that second chance
3. Navigate to the Backup/Restore section by clicking the corresponding little grey bubble at the top. This brings you to a list of all sorts of system/application elements.
4. From here, it's a simple matter of tapping (not long-clicking) on an element to bring up a dialog box. This box will contain options to, among other things, backup, uninstall, and freeze.
At this point regarding Atrix development,
YOU ARE TO TOUCH NOTHING BUT "FREEZE"...EVER. (I guess "Back up" is also fine, but that is not relevant).
Note: To Defrost/Thaw an element, simply repeat steps 1-4, instead selecting the Defrost/Thaw option.
ALSO, I personally have found that any changes made by freezing will only take effect after a reboot. Ultimately, even if this isn't the case, I suggest a reboot anyways (just for good measure). I don't believe there's a need to do this after every single time you Freeze an element, just once after you've Frozen all you'd like.
This of course brings us to...
Elements that are safe to Freeze:
Note:
This list is likely to change as more elements are found to be safe to touch. At the same time, if an element is ever found to cause problems after being Frozen, the list will be updated as soon as possible. Here we go...
The first post containing "Safe-to-Freeze" apps can be found here (Thank you, snlu178). I did not quote this post so as to avoid confusion, though I will be incorporating the list of elements in the linked post into my list. Once again, I owe a big thanks to snlu178 for the risk he took, as well taking the time to list the apps he found safe to Freeze.
The List: (Alphabetized, I believe)
*Disclaimer: Some of these elements correspond to docking/widget functionality. If something appears to be linked to a certain functionality that you need/want, DO NOT TAMPER WITH IT.

Thanks for the mention friend. We need to make sure we tell them that Freeze is a paid feature of Titanium Backup paid version.
Hmm, so I was dump and didn't read the sentence in the parenthesis next to Home 2.2.1. I froze it without have something else and now after a reboot my phone is stuck at the AT&T Rethink Possible Screen. Any ideas?

is the freeze option the equivalent of just renaming the .apk to .bak? If so, it could be an alternative to buying tibu.
This is great. Thanks for getting it stickied.
Re: the no home rebooting nag this point, check out the post on recovering from a soft boot. You will have to learn about adb, but you can get the phone back to life. Anyone else have a faster way to factory reset?

In a sense yes. But TiBu is faster and I would argue has less user error. Plus the app is so great you should spend the money to support the dev. But, you can go through changing the names.
Thanks for staying on top of things, snlu178.
I should have a moment now to update a couple of things, including the mention that the freeze feature is paid only (something I was wondering about but didn't want to speak on too soon; thanks again, Fixter).
Also, regarding the ghetto .bak alternative, does that require Root Explorer? I guess I'd be willing to mention it, but ultimately, if it's a matter of buying Root Explorer, then I might just confine this thread to dealing with TiBU.
Let me work on a small revision, and also make sure freezing Home 2.2.1 can be risky if done so improperly.

Just found out root explorer is also paid. Not that i don't want to pay, it's just that i am new at android (atrix will ship down here in about 2 weeks) and don't know if the market accepts credit cards from Venezuela yet. I will try...
My guess is that there should be a way to rename files from the adb shell as well. Either that, or install openssh or something on the phone and then just su and rename. It's linux, after all.
About freezing home, besides having already installed another launcher like launcher pro or adw, i guess it should be active before freezing it? To avoid force close or other problems.
Have you tried using google checkout?

Really good idea. I don't know if it's necessary, but always better safe than sorry. I will add a notice to not only have another launcher installed, but also "defaulted".

When you install something like ADW and nothing else. Home = Motoblur is completely deactivated. Its like ADW becomes the default home app. You'll need app switcher to get back to it.

I know this. I was just stating a fact.
I agree to call out the need to have a new home app installed and defaulted prior.
Moto Home Fix is what switches back to Home 2.2.1 (if it's not frozen).
Also, though Home 2.2.1 is not default when you have a new launcher it still runs in the background draining CPU and RAM. And every bit you save helps in my book.
I compared running services on my Nexus One (with CM7) with my Atrix and tried disabling services that were on the Atrix, but not on the N1. I have froze the following with no ill effects yet....
I am not running Blur, I am running Launcher Pro.

Titanium Backup
Can Titanium Backup be placed on the SD card, or does it need to be kept in the main phone memory? Haven't seen this addressed anywhere and I have little experience with apps functioning from SD cards.

[Q] Nookie Froyo SDCARD Bootable Issues and Resolutions

I loaded the Nookie Froyo to SDCARD and have been having weird issue all of which has been reported here and in other forums elsewhere. I thought I would take a few minutes and list them out and how I fixed it and also list a few I am still having to see if there is any resolution.
These resolutions are based on posts from this forum and others. I do not have the links for them all as I have scoured so many and tried so many things I stopped book marking them.
My Nookie Froyo is 0.6.8 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922324 (Thank you Brianf21) and I used the free EASEUS Partition Manager to extend #4 to the end of the 8GB SDCARD (http://www.partition-tool.com/). I am also using the multi-u-boot.bin from rookie1 (sweet thing as I can boot SDCARD or stock Nook Color w/out taking out the card!)
If I missed credit to anyone please forgive me. I am not a developer, just an end user that likes to play and am working off of other people’s hard work.
Problem 1: Market downloads apps and then stops and won’t download anymore.
Resolution: Go into Settings/Application Settings/Manage applications. Select ALL. Scroll down to Market and tap it. Tap Force Stop. Tab Clear Data and tap ok to any warning messages. Go to Google Services Framework in All Applications and tap Clear Data. Tap OK and and warning. Power off and back on.
Market should work now and if you got sign in errors for Goggle Talk that should also work. On first run of Market you may not see all of you installed apps. After I installed an app, exited market and went back in all installed Apps were present and accounted for. Been good since doing this and will continue to monitor.
Problem2: WiFi doesn’t work after sleep.
Resolution: Go into Settings/Wireless Networks and Settings/Wifi Settings Hit the Menu Button and tap Advanced. Select Wifi Sleep policy and set it to Never.
Go back to Wireless Networks and Settings and tap Mobile networks. Deselect anything in there that is 2g/3g (I have a nook color so not needed for me).
Run a file manager program that gives you root access (I used Root Explorer). Go into /System/App and rename Phone.apk to Phone.apk.old. Rename TelephonyProvider.apk also to .old. Power off and back on again as you will eventually get errors the phone doesn’t work. Again I am on a Nook Color so no phone and no need to load it.
Problem3: Can’t get the latest Google Framework to load.
problem 3 was resolved kinda by a new build from the developer
Problem 4: Market not showing all apps (protected apps missing)
edit the build.prop using something like root explorer. change the ro.build.fingerprint line to what is shown below (make a backup copy just in case). go into device settings and clear the market cache (not data) and force stop. clear the data for the google framework and force stop. reboot your nook and go into the market. search for something that was missing like vevo. if it apears you should be good.
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2.1/FRG83D/60505:user/release-keys

Cannot install certain apps (Dolphin Browser) by hook or crook on Froyo Rooted Nook

Noob, and sorry for what must surely be a previously-resolved issue, but I cannot for the life of me get the Dolphin Browser installed in my v1.3 ROM-rooted color nook.
I am neither incompetent nor lazy, although I may be stupid. I was having a merry old time with auto-nooted eclair color nook, when I decided to update to Froyo, following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
Following everything to the letter, I quickly had a shiny new Nook Color (after polishing with Windex) that had a prettier intro screen and most of the prior functionality.
Re-installing my favorite apps, I notice that Dolphin browser no longer appears in marketplace as an available app. This is not my only Android device, and from the Android marketplace website, I can see both the Dolphin Mini and HD browsers as available and "installed" on my Droid inc2, but not available for anything else (nook).
"No problem," I think, "I'll just download the apk and side-load it". Problem: cannot install non-marketplace apps error comes up... Okay... Install LCD Resolution and re-set to 160, clicking the default checkbox, retry, re-boot, retry... pull up NookColor Tools and make sure the "allow non-marketplace apps" checkbox is ticked, reboot, retry...Uninstall Market updater and wipe data and cache for Maket... No dice. Cannot see in Marketplace, cannot install apk. Re-boot, wipe data, un-install, re-install, and re-check and un-check and re-boot in every sequence I can think of.
Google the hell out of it (lots of re-boots and ticking/un-ticking checkboxes). Find tons of threads related to 1.2/eclair versions or problems of no working marketplace, and other unrelated stuff.
some facts:
- Android Marketplace is working but appears to be an older version(?) (the green-and-white list-format, not the gray and black graphical format I get on my phone). However, it's still the same version that got me Dolphin just fine on the same hardware when it was eclair, Dolphin just no longer shows up as an available app.....
- In NookColor Tools, the "allow non-market apps" checkbox is now unlabeled, there is just an unnamed checkbox that, in my old install, used to be labeled "Allow non-market apps" or some such. I'm assuming this is a formatting/display issue. No other menu option offers anything similar.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could even just verify the two above points: if you tell me that your Froyo rooted Nook shows the newer marketplace or some such, or shows Dolphin browser as an available app, then that confirms that I have done something wrong or that my nook is weird, or something.
Aggressive googling seems to turn up some people with similar problems, getting broken advice from people running eclair nooks. Lots of blind-leading-the-stupid, with people on different OS telling you to go "settings" (which on my rooted Froyo CN only opens the stock Barnes and Noble settings).
I'm not averse to re-rooting or to PC-based or command-line-type side-loading. I'm mostly just looking for someone to confirm that they are running Dolphin on a Froyo Nook, and ideally some indication of how you got it working.
Please don't tell me to try Opera or Firefox or that the stock browser is better or just as good... I have every available browser installed on multiple devices, and none but Dolphin work properly for certain things.
Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry again if I am missing something stupid.

My everyday NSTG has been updated to FW 1.2.2, running a kernel for 1.2.1 that enables multi-touch, no-refresh mode, and USB host/audio. I never found a kernel that would support BOTH no-refresh and fast mode AND USB, but for reading text no-refresh runs rings around fast mode, IMHO. So I took that kernel and substituted it for the one in the @pinguy1982 USB Host/Audio package so I would have the tweaked audio driver set he put together AND NoRefresh mode. Worked like a charm
I decided to ignore the QuickNav buttons entirely. I assigned the "n" button to "Home" (ADW Launcher) . I assigned the upper left button to "Back" and the upper right button to "Menu". Lower right is set to my "Set Cover" app.
I tried to create a really different look and feel (see images below) using a combination of Desktop VisualizeR and SiMi Folder, two amazing apps. A SiMi folder is essentially a miniature launcher which can be placed on the desktop and assigned an icon using Desktop VisualizeR. More information on the design of the home screen is here.
I also used Minimalistic Text to create the date/greeting and weather widgets (NST Weather Widget app). Any apps that didn't fit into my SiMi folder categories were typically seldom used tools of some sort (wallpaper picker, etc.), so they ended up only in the app drawer. ADW Launcher allows me to hide in the drawer "junk" apps or apps that are one-touch which have been assigned using NTMM.
I have two other NSTs I use for experiments. One runs the unofficial 1.2.2 UK ROM as described here and the other is set up just like the NSTG described above.
These three devices are registered and use the B&N Reader and Library apps.
I also have an NSTG which I have set up without B&N apps as described here. I have installed Mantano Reader and ColorDict (with the Merriam Webster Collegiate dictionary, just like B&N) to replace the missing B&N stuff. Otherwise, it is set up the same as the two NSTs. It is, however, running FW 1.2.1 which is helpful to me when developing Tasker-based apps since plugins do not work with FW 1.2.2 (that is, the Tasker routines do not call the plugins but apps made from the routines have no issues with the plugins).
All the devices also have dual-boot capability for CM 11.
My apps: those marked with * may be hard to find/are older versions and are included in a bundled zip here (note: Mediafire seems to have a problem with a zip full of apk files so each file has an added ".OLD" extension. Remove this before side-loading). Non-B&N apps with no links either came bundled with NookManager or are from the PlayStore (or places like it).

For homescreen setup screenshots, you can look at the NTG Homescreens 2 and NTG Homesceens 3 albums in my profile. I won't upload screenshots of my homescreen because I am a homescreen themer and change my setup about every other day. I can, however, add screenshots of other parts of my device, if you like.
The reason my uRamdisk is unreleased is that it is not stable enough or safe enough for widespread use. The main change that causes this is my seting it up to mount the /boot partition as read-write upon the device booting up. This is extremely dangerous for any average, non-developer user to have, because if even one file in that partition gets modified incorrectly or deleted, their Nook will become permanently unusable for anything except a paperweight.
Hopefully this explains things for you.
How do you guys have so much space to add apps to your NST? I've got the original NST and I keep getting warnings that the Nook is running out of space... Unless the NSTGL has a larger system ROM space than the NST? NOOK!E, I am currently using the 1337 ROM, and everything else seems to be working pretty great.

Um...I dunno? I have the original NST, too, with an 8 GB SD card (6 GB is still free). 90% of the internal storage is still free. I only have a few B&N books on internal storage, the bulk (many) are on the SD card along with music and audiobooks.
I have don't have any apps moved to the SD card.
So how come you're running out of memory? I get occasional nags from CleanMaster that RAM is scarce when I'm doing a lot of work, switching apps, etc., but I've never received any warnings about running out of storage space.

Interesting... I get the alerts like in screenshots below, including when I try to install apps from sdcard or market... How would I move stuff to /system/app from wherever it is? ES File Explorer seems to be finicky, at best, and I can't change the view to show full file names in list form.
Thanks,
DKaine

Use ADB tool or you can use Total commander with ADB plugin on windows machine http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105707
Move apps from /data/app to system/app
And don't forget to set permissions to 644

Maybe, but I think the bigger question is "why is this happening in the first place?" Did you ever do any repartitioning? I'm running stock 1.21 and have never fiddled with anything like that. I've never moved apps to my SD card and have never actually even removed any stock apps, just disabled them by changing the extension to .OLD. I just let apps install wherever they have a mind to. The only thing I have avoided, as a matter of course, is storing media on the internal memory (except for the few B&N books). All my own stuff goes on the SD card.
So what's taking up so much space on your NST? Something's not right.

Hi, sorry for the delay in response... Work kind of got in the way...
I have never done any re-partitioning, and I've got a 16gb sdcard. This is the first time I'm trying to move apps around, and I don't have many B&N books on the internal memory. I've only had the basic apps that install when first installing the ROM (UCbrowser, abridged list of Google Apps, SuperSU, ES File Explorer, etc.)... I started getting the alerts mentioned before just randomly that the Nook storage space was getting close to full. I only started getting the new errors when trying to install apps from the GoogleMarket or side-loaded sources. I only started trying to get rid of stuff/clear space once I started getting these messages/errors.
I've followed all the steps in the first post here Nookie's 1337 ROM to update from an earlier version of that ROM.
Thanks for following up.
DKaine
Yep, and either yattaro or NOOKIE would be your best bet for help with that ROM and the issues you are seeing. I didn't notice any similar responses within that original thread. You might try a PM to NOOKIE. I know he's busy with school right now, but he'll get back to you.
Do you think that antivirus apps are 100% useless on NST (and android devices in general)?
edit: News Republic fails to connect, says: "not trusted certificate server", any clue? (or other similar application working?)

I think that the system is too limited to get into many dodgy situations in which you might need antivirus protection
Seriously, even if you could find an app that would work on 2.1, the chances of the database being current is very small. It would also probably slow the system down even more.
I am bummed about News Republic It was working fine the last time I checked it. The security certificate issue is new and I guess it's one that is not covered by the updated cacerts file used to resurrect the Kindle app and others. I'll try to take a look at the logcat and see if it identifies the certificate name.
In the meanwhile, the NewsHog app still works (just checked to be sure) except for the weather (which may be part of the paid version). It's a little cranky syncing so you may have to touch the sync symbol as you move from news category to category. Also, scrolling is an issue (as it is with nearly all of these apps except for News Republic!!!!!). A very quick flick with your thumb across the bottom right corner of the screen usually works best, but it is a skill. Also helps to keep the screen gutters clean.
Edit: I managed to scrape up older versions of News Republic that spanned 3.0 to 4.2. None of the 4.x would install so they are for higher Android versions. The final 3.x series (3.30) installed and opened OK but exhibited the same issue. A glance at the logcat revealed multiple server contact problems during the initial opening of the app. So it's not just one certificate, regardless of what the screen notification says. Looks like a recent change left the older versions in the dust. RIP.
Also, although it's not quite as streamlined as an app, you can bookmark news.Google.com in your browser--I use Opera Mobile--and if you take the time to customize your view when using a PC (and signed in) you can achieve a similar effect if signed in on your NST browser. No scrolling issues either.
Thanks for the info, unfortunately News Republic as you said continues to have issues. NewsHog isn't bad unless you live in Greece - there is no locale for my country Finally, bookmarking news.google.com/gr (or whatever) is a good idea, but manage the whole thing from desktop doesn't work as opera NST version is too old to sync with current desktop browser. I also use WordNews, seems reliable and has a lot of sources working.

It's not necessary to sync browsers. All you have to do is sign in with the same Google account you use on the NST and set up your news preferences. If you sign in with Opera on the NST then the same news preferences will be displayed. I finally put an Opera shortcut to Google News on my NST home screen and used the Google news app icon: -)
Thanks for the WorldNews tip. I'll check it out.

That was a hit! Done and enjoyed, thanks!
GenieWidget does not seem to work...when I try to add a location it tells me that it has no internet access, which is weird since everything else works with wifi on my rooted NST glowlight...?

GenieWidget has been dead for quite awhile. Even if you could set a location, the weather part was the first to die and then eventually you could not bring up the news either.
If you're interested in weather, WeatherAce is pretty nice, especially if you have a Wunderground API key (free). The only news apps I have that still work are BBC, NPR and NewsHog. All suffer to varying degrees with cranky vertical scrolling, but you can manage with some practice and very clean screen edges. Another alternative is to customize Google News (news.google.com) on your PC logged in to the same account that your NSTG is registered under. If you then sign in on the browser you use for your NSTG, you will get those same customizations. I did that and set a shortcut on my home screen, "borrowing" the current GoogleNews app icon. At least with that one (in Opera Mobile) there are no scrolling issues.
Working versions of the apps I mentioned above can be found in the zip package linked from my signature.
