I started thread here asking moto to include swap support in upcoming 2.2 kernel:
opensource.motorola.com/sf/discussion/do/listPosts/projects.milestone/discussion.general_comments.topc2082
If You care plz also write there to show moto more ppl are interested in it maybe they will turn it on, as its rather hard to load it via module. You need to create account ( opensource.motorola.com/sf/go/wiki1050 create account link at bottom read the rules about accounts names ), a choose project milestone, wait for confirmation and replay at that thread with something like "yes yes very good idea plz turn it on thx"
Whats the advantages ?
- u can use part of the sdcard to act like a ram
- u can use compcache to have compressed ram ( code.google.com/p/compcache/ )
Whats the disadvantages ?
- theres no because if u dont need it u just dont need to use it
so if u care about swap support u can write there someting maybe it will work
wow!
that will be just amazing. can you than imagine a stable HTC frenzy port? that is what i am dreaming about...
i think the only condition is the fast cat.6 microSD
so i hope that this project will come true!
How long does the registration approval take? Or have they silently decided that they don't want my input there?
I dont remember how long i waited for the approval, i think it was day or 2, i did it few months ago. Have u created accounts with name and last name ? not just the nickname they dont accept nicknames and or some fake accounts as they wrote at wiki.
"Please note that we require a full name (first and last) in order to process your account request - ACCOUNT REQUESTS WITHOUT VERIFIABLE FIRST NAMES, LAST NAMES AND EMAIL ADDRESSES WILL BE REJECTED. We also reserve the right to reject account requests with names or email addresses that are inappropriate."
OK, then it means that I'm simply too impatient .
Enabling Compcache or Swap would be a great progress under Froyo. Internal memory seems to be the greatest bottleneck under Froyo (e.g. using flash), so CC/Swap could be a great performance boost.
*signed petition @motorola*
actually it is possible.. see this..

I wouldn't want to swap on a flash memory since there's only a limited amount of r/w cycles on flash memory or am I missing something here?

actually It isnt possible in milestone, cause we cannot boot kernel which isnt signed by motorola (the mentioned method is for droid, not milestone, that is a mistake)
we must try do it different way than by kernel, maybe kernel module, as the Overclock in Milestone was made ...

I've tried looking around for the answer to this but I guess I keep missing it. From what I'm good find the only reason one would have an empty Ext. Rom is to have more rom space on the phone. But not even sure what good that would do exactly.
Can anyone share some light and infom me please?
AFAIK
this is just like what we used to do to get rid of the sh1tty PIM apps on the Palm3 series, erase all the unnecessarry bits from the rom then you can use and app to make a "rom-disk" so you can use the space...
I myself would love to see a rom without any pim apps since I use third party apps for all these functions. and i'd kill file explorer and im sure there are others..
I gonna try to just add all my apps to a custom rom then just flash that, then even a hard reset you have all your apps... I think this is the "GOAL" here, I think unlocking the space and making it visible is working but writing needs another app and may not be "tom,**** and harry friendly, just yet".
Im gonna look into just cooking a rom with all the apps off I want off and as many of my third party apps in it, this seems the best way to go, from what Ive read, rom cooking on a PC is much easier than "adding/deleting" from ROM on board, at this point.
Its is a bit easier on board, but not safer, flashing is always dangerous, and removing things from the palm roms had som undesired affects that had to be ferreted out, It is not a PLUG and PLAY project...But its not all that hard, All this is theory that ive built up since I bought this thing about 3 weeks back, I have yet to test any of this, this isn't meant to be a howto but more a how-Im_gonna_try-it..

On what seems like every phone except the wizard, you can write to the ext rom, install apps to it, etc. That was the case with my old Blue Angel phone, anyway. With the wizard, you can't write to it without trashing it so the only thing it's really good for is when creating a custom rom, you can stick stuff in there to be installed after the flash or hard reset. Then it's basically useless. Woo hoo, huh?

i am also looking into doing the same thing.. like you mentioned i think the only thing its good for is to have your programs after a hard reset, it would certainly be more conveniant, not to mention i would like to remove some of the cingular garbage that gets added...

I fully agree with you on that. One of the major things I hate about flashing a new rom and having to re-install all the apps 1 by . To be able to hard reset with all the programs install would definitely top notch.
Just a question for all the developers here...
As like we did in magician where we could remove the ext rom and then add it again with the phone memory to increase the size of phone memory from 7mb to wooping 27mb (Bigstorage Hack)....Is it possible to do it with TyTN phone memory toooo...??that means by not using the seperately 7-10mb of ext rom with reg hack but adding it completely with the phones 48mb thus increasing it to 60mb or so...???
Thanks

It would be brilliant if someone could do this. But there are different kinds of storage on WM5 devices, which is why the allocation slider between storage and program memory in the memory panel is not operational. So I'm not sure that the recovered memory would be usable as program memory... maybe just add some storage memory. Just not sure...
what we need to do is get a fresh rom, xelencin's 2.25 tmob is what Im thinking of using, then I want to take out
excel
power point
calender
contacts
tasks
file explorer?(it might pay to keep this just in case)
that should be a good start, then Im gonna try to add to the ROM,
Pocket informant
resco explorer and regedit
Hitchhiker
spb pocketplus
I think Im just gonna use the ext rom that comes with the above mentioned rom, so ill add any apps that i cant fit into my "edited" ROM into the EXT rom, i think i should be able to add them to the "stock" extrom
I have tons of reading to do before I think I'll have a rom Im willing to flash to my wiz, is there an emulator for pc to test roms before flashing them?
Is all of this possible, with available tools?, from what Ive read it is but somebody tell me if im wrong...
bhang
im a noob at this... i have only made 1 successful rom so far and it was just the extended rom that i changed.. So let me share some light on yours to the best of my knowledge so far...
Now as far as excel, PP, Calendar, tasks and file explorer.. i think they are actually part of the OS and not in the extended rom. Cause if you take a clean rom with 1 or 2 files in the extended rom like Mulski's then you still end up with all of those programs.. (someone please correct me if im wrong)
And as far as what you want to add.. Yes thats possible, you would need to add those to the extended rom (but not on the device) Do some searching on what you need to to.. there are some great threads out there that give you step by step instructions... which for some reason i cant find at this point in time... was gonna give you the link, but i just spent 30 minutes searching and cant the thread with a pdf of step by step instructions on making a rom...
I think I read that's what Summiter is overall aiming to do. Make so we can choose what we want. I can definitely use a feature like removing powerpoint and the rest of the stuff I never use.
Why doesn't anybody cook this into roms? For that matter, why isn't this toggleable somewhere in Settings by default, huh Microsoft?!
Looks like someone didn't read the sticky...

As funny as dooby's reply was, oddly enough, some people do not like having the cabs stay on their device. It wastes space and is a bit annoying to navigate after reflashing a rom. With the advent of the UC capable roms, I would have to say that if you like keeping your cabs around, customize it into your setup. You can read about UC here and here.

You be quiet with that oversized waste of space post.
I was complaining about WM deleting cabs from my storage card. It doesn't bother me to delete them from the device itself. I still think it should be a toggleable setting at least to exclude the SD card.
Its actually kind of helps me to have the cabs delete themselves. I just keep a folder on my PC with all the cabs -- then when I put it on my Storage Card after a Hard Reset or New Rom, I can tell what is installed easy cuz the cabs disappear. I don't want them to stay on the phone. Just my preference.

I know what you were asking. I linked you to the video because "it is always better to reply than to start a new thread" and I think you should have made use of XDA's "best kept secret, the Search button."
The former would allow you to ask specific ROM makers why they don't include. The latter would have given you the answer you seek from the ROM makers themselves (since they've all been asked this question before).
You didn't actually think you were the first to ask this question, did you?
Nope, not that it matters. It was an open question to all, except smart asses like you. I wasn't asking rom makers specifically but everybody and their opinions.
I know how to Search, I do it all the time, except I don't have the time for it as I'm at work right now.
I thank you for wasting time ans space again, though, with a second 100% unhelpful post, my good sir.
Edit: I'm done here.

I for one did wanted to cook it into my past and current releases but never had any luck getting it to work. The only rom I've every used that had it working correctly was pdaviet roms. But I have spent some time with my up coming rom and was able to cook it into it. So my next release Open Touch v4.0 does have it included.
For me it has been a learning process working with the base rom itself and there are many things we want it to do but some times it just will not work the way we want it to.
Regards,
Well a read only cab file stays after installation. I assign all my cab files "read only" attributes, either from desktop PC before I put in on my phone, or use total commander to do that.
I didnt know this was a Debate just why it has access to remove the cabs from our memory cards. I myself hate cab delete because ive used a number of roms lately all of them Crash hard on me. I think i figured out what is going on but i work 12 hour shifts and if it freezes up and i have to hard reset at work i need to get the things i use most back up on the phone.
Try sprite backup...
After hard reset I can get back to the original state in minutes.
Backup folder
Just copy your cabs twice. Once to the phone for install, and once to your PIM backup folder. That way you'll always have a spare. You can copy those and reinstall your important apps anytime.
Hi everybody,
I wanted to learn some (basic) programming in VC# and the .Net Framework. So i looked for an idea. After a short time i had this idea, to create a program, in which you can keep track of your Fuel consumption of your car. (i think it is kind of useful, because the prices are changing every day).
I thought i'd share it here.. maybe someone is looking for a piece of software like this.. if not, just ignore it
you can test it, use it etc (whatever you want)..
Currently, there are two languages: German and English, but i dont love my English translation...
News:
v0.1.1 is now online:
I fixed the bug but another problem appeared: people who upgrade to the new version will lose all their data stored in data.xml with the uninstaller...
So i decided to create a simple Backup-Restore Function. Now, with the new version, you can Backup your Data before Upgrading and after that, you can restore it... If you use the Backup - the files will remain in your memory, until you delete them..
This is not the best way to solve the problem, because these files will stay on Memory even if the user uninstalls the program...
I read, that there is a way to costumize the setup process with a custom "Setup.dll" but i could not figure out how this works.. if anyone knows how to do this, please PM me..
Changelog:
v0.1.1 - 10/20/2008
fixed: storing units did not work
added: simple backup-function
added: simple restore-function
v0.1 - 10/19/2008
inital release
Beware: I will not guarantee for damage on your devices
If you have Bugs, ideas for new features or other feedback - let me know ..
This is a cool little program, would help a lot of people who have to teavel to work, etc..
I wish i had this when i was having some mileage problems with my car.
FuelCal
It looks good. I will give it a try.
Don't worry about your English, you can program!!!
Have a great day.
Glenn
FuelCal
Now for some more fun programming.
The store function is not storing the updated info.
It would be very useful for me if it would also calculate Mile/Gallon
Thanks.
Glenn
thanks for the feedback...
well i did not test the "Store" Feature for the Units ... bad in this case...
is will release a fixed version soon, stay tuned...
have a nice day
Just what i was looking for.
Thank you very much.
A bug
Hi. Excellent idea. You should check that on "Evaluation" the "price per Km" should be divided by 100 because it is done in cents but the unit says, when you change it, $/Km and not $cents/Km
Thanks.
Suggestion
Nice idea g3eB4Y. I will try the app.
This is something that could grow into a larger application if you want to track vehicle maintenance too. Also, I think that it would be helpful if you could simply enter the odometer reading and fuel quantity and allow the program to calculate distance.
First of all, thank you for your feedback...

I think there is nothing really wrong with the calculation.
When you change something on the settings page, you will only change the mask, but it will not affect the calculation..
The first Textbox under "Currency" will change the display for the "big-currency-unit" (€,$...) and the other textbox will change the "small-currency-unit" ($Cent, €Cent.. )
I can include a feature, that you really can change the calculation and display mode (€/km, €Cent/km, €Cent/20km ...) but at this moment, it does not

i have some idea for new features, i will try do implement them in one of the next versions, stay tuned...
its great to see, that somebody uses it... thank you!
g3eB4Y,
Very nice app you have. I've been using a excel spreadsheet to do this and now, I'm moving over to your app.
I wonder if you could add in another method of calculating the fuel consumption.
Distance travelled / No. of Litres = km/litre
Hope you can add that in to your next update.
Thanks once again.
PS:
No big deal but if you could name your cab file with the version number, it would be great!
hi every cooker here.. i got a question to ask.
as for introduction, i introduce what is remotetracker. i personally feel remotetracker as a best lost phone tracking software as i really get involve in a phone lost event. n remote tracker help me to track it bak. i got my phone bak again
it is so lucky that da theif doesnt know how to hard reset my phone that time. which i feel i really lucky. but to prevent that happen, how bout we implement remote tracker as a must have application to every single ROM posted here.. i really scare of my XPERIA will been stolen by others!
as we install da remote tracker by default, it will auto load a filename as 'rt.dll' from our storage card wihich will then work on da fly. it will auto send sms to pre-set number in rt.dll file. mean we could possibly save or track our device by sending a invisible message to the device.
this is the weblink for the remote tracker
http://remotetracker.sourceforge.net/
i know ther are a lot of other software available. why must remote traccker? because i tried few of them.. n none of them really reply me with correct infor i needed. some i didnt even receive any message from it. some even crash my device. i dont wan to list the name of application i tried. but i will feel remotetracker is stable n reliable. n i even successfully track bak my device once.
so, please reply with appropriate answer. i cant make this thread as poll.. no idea how.
Hey guys, I have the official ROM from HTC for my Fuze, and I'm scared to flash a new rom cause I'm afraid I'll brick my phone.
That being said, my question is this: With the rom update, I can no longer send texts to more than one person at a time. I'm wondering if there's a program I can install (that doesn't require a register edit cause I'm scared to mess something up there too) that can allow me to send group messages again.
Thanks for any help.
have you tried "SMSer 1.0"? you can get it at 1800pocketpc or google search it. i haven't tried it but it should work and should be free
I use a bit of freeware called Moblmsg. it allows you to create groups and send texts to groups. Think i got it from freeware pocketpc site.
the only downside is that the 'sent' texts dont appear in your 'sent folder (but can be viewed through the Moblmsg 'log' button).
Easy to use. its not perfect but ive not found anything better
oh ... and by the way .... the first flash is scary but after youve done it once you'll be hooked
