have looked threw the threads and have not found answer to questions.
Have a rooted nexus one with amon ra 1.7.
using rods latest rom and have noticed that some of the newer roms are requiring amon ra 1.9.
If I flash this rom on the phone do I have to erase the amonra 1.7 or does the 1.9 overwrite this? I have not done anything with the sd card IE ext 3 or 4 or any partitions. Is there a place with instructions on how to do this?
also what are the advantages to up grading to amonra 1.9?
thanks
john
Amon RA's 1.9 is required for ROMs that need to pre-load EXT partition, because they're too big to fit into the main Nexus system partition.
All the guides are in the Wiki. Read my signature, read the Wiki, and if in question - read it again, and again.

normally I keep my mouth shut with people like you. I have watched your kind spank anyone who may have a question that seems redundent or stupid.Or may have been answered in another post.
I searched your WIKI. My questions were not addressed.

Thanks for nothing Jack
you brain trusts maybe need to be a little more understanding to newbies and people with logical questions.
John
Recoverys overwrite each other, so just flash your new recovery over your existing one.
I don't know much about 1.9, so I can't help you with the partition bit...
I think Jack explained the benefits of 1.9.
BTW - I agree that it's difficult to find specific answers on here.
I think Jack is trying to help you in the long run, by getting you to understand what you do, rather than just do it. For example; you already have a custom recovery - how did you install it over your stock recovery? Knowing that would've answered your first question, right?
Wish I could help you more...

Use logic, as danger-rat suggested before me. It helps a lot.
I wrote you EXACTLY, what is 1.9 for and why is it required for some ROMs. I can also add that 1.9 supports SLCD devices, while 1.7 doesn't. That's for the first part of your question. If you missed or didn't understand the answer - don't blame me. I can't explain it better, since for this I would need to explain the whole concept of different partitions on SD card, Apps2EXT (also called Apps2SD+) working concepts using the EXT partition on SD card, Linux concept of mounting and unmounting devices, and the need for more space than Nexus system partition has to contain several newer ROMs which created the requirement for Apps2EXT and for mounting EXT partition in recovery. It would take "only" a couple of forum pages if I did, and it has ALL been explained, just need to use Google to read the explanations, or read through the guides and try to understand. Do you really think I or anyone else have time to write those couple of forum pages to answer you?
To the second part, using this thing called logic:
Did you erase the stock recovery when installing Amon_RA's 1.7? No, right? It just overwrites whatever was there. Why do you think installing 1.9 would be different?
Did you get Amon_RA's recovery installed as a part of ROM, or was it installed separately? Separately, right? What makes you think 1.9 is any different?
This is logic only, without going and reading about device partitions and their purpose (specifically recovery partition).
Reading the first part of my answer about 1.9 and reading the requirements of the ROMs that include EXT partition of specified size, isn't it clear that the ROMs won't install if there is no EXT partition for them?
And you're right - there is nothing in the Wiki that points to DarkTremor's Apps2SD thread and gives a basic explanation of Froyo's Apps2SD method vs Apps2EXT. One would probably expect people to run a search for Apps2SD or Apps2EXT in Development section and/or Google to find the answers, but it doesn't work. It should be changed. I'll get to it in a couple of hours, after I work a bit - after all, I'm at work.

Will someone be kind enough for all the noobs out there and post a complete video of how to get from a completely stock firmware to (well in this case) this hero build, or the newest, latest, or best working hero build. While showing the order to flash radios, spls, and such using the ADB. It will help out a lot of people trust me. And from the looks of all the noobs right now youll have so many views, subscribers, followers or whatever your motive is. Please help noobs out.
If you need it you can find some free desktop recorders to enhance your video here: http://download.cnet.com/windows/vid...ftware/?tag=bc
Completey safe downloads from cnet.
Remember stock to hero!
I would do this myself but i myself do not know how and am on my second g1.
Thank you!
i will have a go at making that over the weekend.

Since this thread is for the "noobs", I have a couple of questions to ask.
Excuse my not using the search fully. There are just so many threads and so many responses and none of them are completely clear.
If I were to root my phone with the latest Hero ROM that has flash playet 10, will I still need to upgrade the firmware to 1.5 or is this particular ROM built on 1.5 or what??
Also, does this latest Hero ROM have the famed HTC virtual keyboard or no??

Honestly idk but maybe someone will see this thread and answer that for you or you can start a new thread
There are quite a few videos out there already that show you how its done. Maybe not directly toHero but the whole process is the same - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDPFhJ9noLA
So instead of using JF 1.31, simply use the Hero ROM of your choice, rename it as "update.zip" and put it on the root of your SD card. Turn off your G1, hold the HOME button and press POWER to get into the Recovery image. Press ALT+W (to wipe) then ALT+S (to flash the ROM).
EDIT: I forgot some very crucial information >_< IF you are going to Hero from Stock you do require a few other things. Namely the new Radio and the new SPL (depending on which Hero ROM you pick). Make sure though that whatever you do, you upgrade the radio first to avoid bricking your G1. Look at my signature for links to what you need, like the Radio, SPL etc.
Wait patiently and all should be well...
@OutstandingO
Hero is basically Cupcake (1.5) but with a different interface created by HTC using custom code. So you just flash the Hero ROM of choice and that's it.

YouTube has plenty of view on rooting that's where I learned how to do it, they also have the files u need to root it right there for u to download. Just search it and u will find it. The guy who's vid I followed is tony moreno look for his bids. I don't recommend jumping from 1.1 to hero. Go from 1.0 to 1.1 then jump to 1.5. Also hero is built from 1.5. I myself have tried it but even with all the optimizing its not fast enough for me. It also has the famed HTC IME keyboard. I myself use JF 1.5 APD. With the Hero theme in the themes section with the HTC keyboard. Flash would be nice but it still has issues with speed and force closings. Like I said YouTube the rooting process and search around the thread for other stuff like and and how to use fastboot.
I forgot some crucial information, namely to upgrade the Radio first and that you might need to upgrade the SPL. Have edited my post.
That is in part something that threw me for a loop.
I've seen multiple vids for rooting but none of them seem to address this whole "Radio" issue that you brought up and the steps surrounding that. From what I have been reading this is the most important part.
I love this site but the type of people that post here are guys that already know what their doing in most cases and they speak and post as such.
So have I ever developed an app for the G1, no, but I'm not Danny Dunderhead either. I can read a set of instructions if laid out for me.
So I ask you more experienced gentlemen, can someone either post a link or give me step by step help in checking my "radio", upgrading my "radio" and then installing the ROM??
I would greatly appreciate it.
I did it! I bricked my G1!
Yeah, well...what can you do. I read over the posts here, watched youtube videos, and searched the web as well. Read and viewed everything I could until I couldn't take it anymore. Then...I tried. Tried and failed? No, tried and died.
MAN, I WANT HERO! I am more jealous with every video I see. I don't care if it's a little slow. It is pure Android beauty. But...
There is so much information out there, not just at this forum, but all over the net. And although there are many similarities between the instructions (I use that term loosely for some), many have different steps so it's hard to tell which to follow. Apparently taking what you feel are the best from each is not the way to go. Really, I'm not stupid about these things...well...
So, here is where I started; a T-Mobile G1 running the latest OTA 1.5 update and the 2.22.19.26I radio software. Used Parted Magic to create a 5GB FAT32 and a 1GB EXT2 partition on the SD card. I downloaded everything I though I would need or could find. The original boot and recovery img's along with RC29, RC30, and Cupcake zips. Then I got HardSPL and a bunch of files from Hayruko. I got JeseusFreke, CyanogenMod, and JACHero stuff. Hell, someone said to download the Telnet.apk and put it on the SD card as well. Did that. I found a great thread for installing the JACHero, but it did not go into rooting your phone first. Did that need to be done? I guessed it did. So I started there. Downgraded nicely to RC29. That was easy. Then even went through the telnet and terminal emulator steps. Then trouble. Which recovery.img to use? Some instructions reference the testkeys and some don't when rooting. Figured I would do it that way. So I went through those steps. Loaded CyanogenMods 1.3.1 and 1.33.2005 SPL on the SD card. Flashed (I thought) the recovery.img. Rebooted to get ready to install the SPL. Stuck at t-Mobile G1 now! They really do call it a brick for a reason.
So now that I got that off my chest, a few questions. First, I want to run HERO. I want it! However, I would like to make a request this time. Could someone please post step by step instructions for taking a stock G1 to the JACHero 2.3.4 release. Not just "flash the recovery and SPL" files. I would like more detailed directions. If you know of a good link to send me, please tell me. I thank you in advance for your time. I know it's a real pain in the ---, but I promise I will pass your knowledge along to another such as I!
A few questions first. I believe the steps are something like this:
1. Downgrade to RC29.
2. Copy recovery_teskeys.img and some recovery.img along with some SPL update.zip file to the SD card and "load" them properly. Which files should you use (does it matter), which order should you do it and how?
3. How do I do a Nandroid backup at this point? Do I need/want to?
4. Do I wipe now? Need to ever? Doesn't the image overwrite everything anyway?
4. Copy update.zip (the renamed JACHero 2.3.4 zip file) to the SD card and load it. Do you need to load any other image first other than JACHero 2.3.4.?
5. Enjoy HTC Hero goodness!
I know I am asking a lot, but I need the steps so I can replicate this easily. I am going to want to do this a lot based on what I see out there. Always something new to try and a lot of great developers out there. Thank you in advance for all of your time and effort. I promise to pass it along.
Is there a thread that shows the users marginal picks of the best combo's of mods, roms, hardware, and apps? I tried to search for it but didn't seem to find it.
(Please keep in mind most of the stuff I have found is dated from 2009 and CM6 was released yesterday)
Basically, I am interested in rooting my G1 and updating it to CM6.??? But the radio (danger/death.spk) scare has a hold of me. I want to make sure that I can go back to factory without problems. (In case I sell the phone)
What about running apps from SD? Is it effective on a 8GB class 2 card? And if so what are the advantages of it? (Speed increase, load times, ect.) Can this be done without flashing/rooting?
Is there a way to transfer files over bluetooth or Wi-Fi without having to root?
There are quite a few things other than this but, these are the most important that I can think of. And since I have never messed with rooting or ROMS I have no idea if it is even possible to install apps after flashing with a new ROM.
Once again, forgive me in my wonderment of noobness! I am another droid that has seen the fading light of win-mo and has crossed over!
Thank you to all in advance for their help!

Don't believe there is a thread of that nature.
You don't need the danger spl anymore. Do a search for firerat's mtd patch and that will work for you. As long as you read and do follow the instructions there is no fear involved even with danger spl. Just dont make a mistake. You can always go back with the dreaming.nbh file. Always a way to unroot. You will want to get amonra 1.7.0 for recovery. And for your sake nandroid.
If you're not running out of internal memory i dont believe there is a real advantage to using a2sd but the new roms have a new method implemented. I dont think you can use a2sd with stock.
Do a search for blue tooth file transfer in the market. Don't believe you need root access to use it.
You can always install apps after rooting and flashing a custom rom. You will still have market and everything. Just makes your phone better/faster. Just keep reading and you will find a huge amount of info here in these threads.
Good luck.
Firerats mtd hack can fake your spl for you. So you don't have to worry about flashing danger spl and bricking. Its just what all of us old guys run. Because when we first started. There wasn't any other way for us. So read up on rooting and firerats hack and you should be good. No need for 1.33.2005 death anymore.

forum data loss is very annoying... I'll see if I'm patient enough to ask this as well as the first time: reposting as new thread.
The BIG FAQ is a great general information source for android hacker noobs, samsung or ohterwise. I am trying to understand something missing here and confused elsewhere. I want to know how factory default recovery works in detail. First this requires an understanding of what information exists on the device (from factory or a flash) and how it's organized and used (please read on before saying the FAQ answers this).
1) Where does a flash put information? Are all the major OS parts (core, phone, CSC) on one partition or on a few? I've seen my phone do some installations after a reset, installing apks I think, I guess these are from the CSC which makes me think it's not (fully) applied to the working directories during the flash, could be on a separate partion, but maybe not and it's just finalizing installation on the same partition. (unpacking, registering etc...) I don't know.
2) related: Is the working copy of /system the one and only copy or is there a master copy made during a flash that is reverted to during a reset.
Example: If I root a phone with an exploit (NOT A FLASH) and still have stock ROM and then delete a system apk... did I delete the only copy of that apk or will a recovery restore it.
I've read people say that a factory reset doesn't lose root, but that doesn't get to the point since many or most people get root by flashing a new ROM.
3)Are the answers the same for every phone?
4)I forgot part 4 but I think it was a good question the first time around .
(edit: I remeber part 4, is there only 1 type of factory reset? ok not that good.)
Thanks.
bump.. who's the jerk voting this one star?
Yes there's a noobish element to it,
Yes it COULD go in Q an A
BUT
1) I found a thread here with two senior mods arguing whether some phone, I think galaxy S has a hidden partition somewhere possibly holding the system backup. Ok maybe it was old.. but I didn't see any definitive answer so it's not THAT noobish.
2) It could go in Q and A, but the BIG FAQ is here.. and. it's relevant to develoment/flashing why?... Obviously it's related to how much risk people take when mucking with files in their phone.. ie will they need a flash of just a reset. Also could bring new ways to get ROMS without flashing anything... just ideas.. but clearly not so out of place.
If the answer is so obvious, then just say it. You knew it was a question before you read and rated it.
I can go test this by moving a file and resetting my phone. But if it's really so obvious a quick reply sure would save the trouble.
I hope mods can make this sticky.
Do not use ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 to create partitions for SD-EXT. There is a bug with clockworkmod recovery that create faulty partition resulting in data corruption. This prevent a2sd+ from working properly, any attempts to fix a2sd without recreating SD-EXT can corrupt apps and market data.
So please use RA Recovery v2.2.1 for partitioning SD until this bug is plugged.
Yeah, it's old news though.
If you must use CWM use an older version or one of the few modified version floating around.
Just so you know it's not just for partitioning clockwork mod 3.X is unstable in allot of ways some people get away with using it but that's usually the people who flash stuff like max once a month or that just install cm then stop even booting into recovery so I suggest everyone to go either to Amon RA or clockwork mod 2.5.1.4 (which is the latest 2.X clockwork mod recovery).

Unfortunately, this news is not visible to people who are new to using CWM. I think making this sticky will be helpful to new users. I had to do several forum hunts the whole day yesterday just to figure out what was breaking A2SD+ on MIUI.

I have to say it's true that this is common knowledge to people who spend some time on forums but to noobs and people who are just following a tutorial it's true that this knowledge is not very visible so I think this should either be stickyed or put into the nexus one wiki. Just my 2ยข
To begin, I have a basic knowledge of Android and how it works. I've rooted, bricked, and unbricked my fair share of Android phones, but the NC is a bit of a different animal to me... Phones are pretty consistent in their methods, the NC kind of caught me off guard.
I've perused quite a bit of threads in both the general and dev forums, and found multiple ways of doing multiple things which got a bit confusing, compounded by the fact that Froyo and Eclair methods vary quite a bit on some subjects.
I have a 1.2.0 "blue dot" NC. Things I know to be true:
Have to use latest CWM SD and replace the boot and ramdisk in order to root with manualnooter.
Have to use the correct 2/4/8GB image for my MicroSD (although the size-agnostic SD image threw me for a bit of a loop, but I'll stick with what I know works).
Here are my goals:
I want a complete backup of stock nook in case I have to start over for some reason. Boot, system, ROM, permissions, everything. What is the easiest and/or most complete way of doing so?
I'd like to dual boot stock and CM7 nightlies off of eMMC and use SD strictly for storage (and use a separate SD for recovery). If that's not possible, I'd like CM7 to be on eMMC and stock to be on SD.
If you've got the time and want to write me up a handheld walkthrough, that would be nice, but I don't expect or really need that. All I'm looking for is links to threads that will give me the information I need to figure out for myself what the best way of doing this is. There are a lot of threads for older versions of things, and some of the discrepancies between here and Nookdevs have confused me at times.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I saw that thread and deduced that it was probably the best one. My only question left is, how do I make a complete 100 percent backup of stock in case I bugger something up and need to start over?

After you flash clockwork recovery, you can use it to make a nandroid (1:1) backup of your stock setup.
To get a backup: boot into CWM (whether from an sdcard or from emmc) and make a backup - just make sure you have a big enough card.
Then start flashing the zips!
That was my #1 question, I suppose. Nandroid works the same on NC as it does all other devices? I had just read conflicting reports about people fooling with the /system and /data and having trouble restoring from there even after the 8-boot "trick".
Yup, it does. I have needed to flash to stock and to make a bootable nook sd card.
Thanks for all the help, guys! Time to dig into this thing!
