[Q] Bricked and probably can't return - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well i messed up my phone with Odin3, and i can't get into download mode. I've tried different ways and many times to get into download mode, but its just not happening. I'm stuck at the (Phone..!..Computer) screen.
Searching the forums i read that if the phone has batch 1008 it cannot go into download mode with the 3 button combo, lucky for me i have a batch 1008. Is there any workaround for this?
also, being that I bought my phone off Amazon over a month ago do i have any options of getting it replaced in an AT&T store?....Even if i lie and say it messed up from an OTA update?

AT&T warranty repair or Samsung warranty repair is what I would try. Tell them the OTA bricked it.

I know your pain. I thought I had bricked mine about a week ago as well.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911&page=5
I can't find the other link but I had to reboot the phone about 2-3 times consecutively back to back in order to get it back into download mode. The fix is listed on the xda website but I don't have the link to it unfortunately.
If I can remember off the top of my head (which may be wrong):
1. Startup Odin on your PC
2. Hold volume up + volume down + Power (Do not let go)
Let the reboot cycle complete at least 2 full times. On the 3rd power up cycle, release the power button but keep the volume Up & Down buttons pressed.

I have batch 1008 and can get into download mode. Just trying to dispell the myth.
Also, the previous poster is right. Sometimes odd combos are required. Keep trying and good luck!

You think they would replace it even though i didn't buy it from an AT&T store?

Samsung warranty repair is your best bet.
I just tested this theory today after my Captivate getting bricked from Odin freezing durring a flash. It was batch 1008 and I bought it at Best Buy. Took it to an at&t store just to see if they'd accept it and they said they couldn't do it because I didn't buy it there.

bricked captivate

need alt ways to get into recovery other than adb and holding down the volume keys.
i bricked my captivate using the odin one click recovery going from the i900 rom to stock. odin had froze and i restarted trying again only to see the phone and computer screen.
sorry a bit frustrated ....ask all the questions u need

1) Remove the battery
2) Remove the SIM
3) Reinsert the battery
4) Run ODIN (Note: I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 so I ran ODIN in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' option. I would suggest doing this to make sure you have no permissions issues with the program.)
5) Depress both the up and down volume buttons on the phone at the same time
6) While you are depressing both the up and down volume buttons, plug in the USB cable.
No need to depress the power button or do anything else. The phone should go right into Download mode with the little yellow construction guy.
Then ODIN will see the COM port you are connecting with and you can just click Start.

I'm not so sure that it's not brickable, I'm pretty sure I bricked mine...
I was trying to load the international galaxy s 2.2 rom using odin 3 and for some reason I got stuck in recovery mode and could do nothing (this was after it finished loading the rom). I couldn't make it go to the download mode. Anything I did just took me right back to recovery.
I'd really love to know what you guys would have done, I'm new to android the captivate is my first.
Thanks in advance for your input.
By the way, I was talking it through with a buddy and we came up with a possible cause. I was rooted when I tried loading the 2.2 rom. Would that have bricked it?

i did the same thing thing initially, no big deal, battery pull and while the phone is off hold volume key and power, ...

Yes, the buttons are different if you attempted to flash a Galaxy S rom, the typical button hold will not work.

Hey guys, if you are stuck on that phone+!+computer screen, do this to get into download mode!!
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3(you must open odin3 before you start or it won't flash. Do NOT put your sim or sd card back in).
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black and return to that horrible screen.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the voldown and volup.
note: THE STUPID SCREEN IS NOW FIXED!!

that is EXACTLY what got my phone out of the certain brick situation i thought i was in this morning. i had been trying for hours, every combination imagineable from the vibrant/galaxy s forums. odin3 had shut down on me twice mid process so everything was SEVERELY screwed. i did that combination and the very first time it caught and installed now my phone works perfect. ended up sending designgears a donation based on that post alone. thanks dude!

I did have my phone plugged into power when I was trying the button push combos.
I didn't, however, try holding down just the volume button so I can't know for sure if that could have worked.
Since I was within the 30 day window I just took it back to at&t and they gave me a new one. I'm too chicken to try loading the 2.2 rom again. I really want to, but I can't afford a $500 brick...

AT&T replaced it without question? Interesting...
Edit: Well, now that I think about it, the guy that sold me mine was pretty clueless about it. I had to show him how to remove the battery cover, despite the printed "ILLUSTRATED" instructions stuck to the cover.
There's going to be a lot of refurbished captivates hitting the market soon.

So I can't get any button combo to work, and all I get is White AT&T screen (if unplugged) and a frozen loading screen(if plugged into usb). Any ideas?
I think I have the same problem.
Used Odin one click to flash stock rom and then tried to flash JH7, but had some troubles with odin when trying flashing... tried to reboot the phone by pulling out the battery and now I can't turn it on, just have an image on the screen: Phone has troubles with connecting to PC and that's it...
oh yeah, that helped me:
1. Remove battery & usb
2. Open odin.
3. Plug in usb.
4. Hold vol down.
5. Put battery in.

Bricked captivate
ok so i was running a devil kernel on jellybean 4.2 and for some strange reason the rom started acting funny and gave me a message saying i had to type in a password ti decrpyt storage even though i have no passwords on my samsung I897. So i decided to flash back to stock and start all over again from scratch using odin one click but in the middle of downloading my phone was disconnected and it gave me the bricked screen shortly after. Now i am unable to do anything on this phone ive tried pushing the volume buttons and taking the battery and sim card out while running odin 3 again trying to force it back into download but so far no progress has been made. If any one can help me it is much apprecitated.

[Q] Captivate Don't boot

Got my captivate into download mode by the adb command method. Fired up odin and clicked start. It showed my phone as com4 (Yellow). It kept hanging so I unplugged my phone and removed the battery and now the phone boots to a nice phone ... to computer icon. Any help? suggestions?
Notes:
I tried entering download mode again via the volume keys and removing the battery no luck. This didn't work prior to using odin. I had to use method 1 to even get into download mode. I was trying to install 2.2 via odin one click.
this phone has 2.1 update 1 on it.
How long did you let it run? Did you start Odin before putting your phone in download mode? Search the forums there are numerous threads already on this.
I let in a run for like 2 mins just sat there. I saw videos and it didn't hold like it did for me. Almost like it was froze. I started odin before. didn't show. put device in download mode still didn't show unplugged it and replugged it in and it showed finally.
Try this open Odin one click then with the phone unplugged remove battery, SIM, external card if you have one, hold both volume buttons and do not let go, do not touch power, plug phone into pc, put battery in and you should go into download mode. I have read that this has worked for others in your situation. See if this works.
What were you running on your phone when you decided to use Odin? If you were running any I9000 the button combo may be different.
I tried that still stuck with the "phone+!+computer" screen. No Digging android man. I hold both volume keys, No Power and plug it and still no go.
What did you have running on your phone when you were attempting to flash? What were you flashing?
Did you take the battery out? Open Odin, battery out, try holding just the volume down and power buttons, plug in the phone to pc, keep holding the buttons, then put the battery in. There are different combos that I have read that work for people. You can always pop in the Cognition chat room and see if someone there can help you. http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=Cognition Also, was your phone in debugging mode.
This phone is brand new out of box. Nothing Was running just factory settings. I was trying to install the froyo leak via this odin downloader. I've tried that method along with a few others I've fount in search. None seem to help to no avail at all.

You should've left Odin running with the phone plugged in, not trying to kick you while you are down. Go to the Cognition chatroom and see if you can get help. If you bought it from AT&T return it and blame it on the failed OTA, you're within 30 days. I know I'll get **** for saying that but oh well.
I've read that these #1008 Lot phones don't have the ability to get into download via the button combination. That's what my phone is it's a #1008 lot. I didn't buy my phone from AT&T I bought it from an ebay seller.
But you did get into download mode once. You can always send it to Samsung for waranty repair. Call Samsung support, blame the OTA from AT&T.

Call Samsung support and send it in for waranty repair. However, the seller sold you a phone that won't go into download mode. Maybe E-Bay could get you a refund. Then you can buy one from AT&T to avoid these types of ussues. Sorry for your trouble, I hope you get it resolved with Samsung waranty repair or the seller. If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it on e-bay?

Phone is Dead - A warning for others.

Ok, heres the deal.
My girlfriend has the same Galaxy S as i do, and i wanted to go back to stock.
Id grabbed all the needed files off her galaxy (boot.bin, cache.rfs, dbdata.rfs, factory.rfs, modem.bin, param.lfs, sbl.bin and zImage) and loaded up heimdall to flash them all back.
The flash finished successfully, the phone switched off, and i awaited a reboot.
It never came.
The phone is now in a Non- Functional state, wont turn on at all.
The battery was fully charged at the time, and ive also pulled her battery out and tried it, but still no go.
Im thinking something inside is fried.
Just thought id share my misfortune with you, just in case someone else was going to try the same thing.
If you were gonna try....think twice
So i guess its back to Optus shop on tuesday, and see what i can do about a replacement.
Cheers all.
you shouldn't use boot.bin ,Sbl.bin and param.lfs. It is not safe to play around these files, you could dump other files and flash it,without any problem,
Ok, well maybe thats what has killed it.
Ive tried all key combinations, but nothing at all.
Pretty convinced its fried.

I did the same thing on my phone and happened so, but I took it to service center and they repaired without changing the board or opening it(this is what I think because there were no trace of any physical repair), anyhow its working again. but before you may try some methods which I read in some forum as below:
Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
You should be in Download Mode.
there is another method which I will try to find and inform you
Thanks for the tip....but no go.
Screen still black....
Its like its not getting power at all.
Try and force it in to download mode [vol down - home key - power button] and then reflash it with a stock rom. If that fails then you could try holding just the power button in for a minute or 2 but if that also fails then your last option is to try and either get hold of a jig or make one to try and get it in to download mode.
Using the application Odin should fix this problem. as above said, about vol up vol down, im sure it is volume down, powerbutton and homekey when connecting to a comp when odin is open. Odin is ure failsafe. correct me if i am wrong with this information!

Ive tried all key combinations that we know.
Ive flashed it many times before, but i think this time after the flash, something has blown, in between the battery, and the power switch, so its not getting any power.
I think the only cure is to return to samsung for repair.
Ive tried everything that ive read from various google searches for the last 8 hours or so...and no hope.
Im almost positive theres no power getting from battery to the power switch.

Yes follow instructions understand what you are doing first dont make it up as you go along .
I would guess you have destroyed boot loader .
Possible fix is download mode recovery jig .
Samsung service centre possible charge .

Grabbing some resistors tomorrow, will see how that goes.

If the Sbl.bin id non functional, the Jig can't do anything, you must use a RiffBox or equivalent sadly.
sad story, hope never will happen to me
If its still under warranty just go to samsung service centre and tel them you tried upgrading firm ware over the kies and phone did not boot after that. Its not easy for samsung to find what you did with the phone. they will replace mobo free if warranty is valid.

Yeah will do.
Mrs will take the phone in to where she bought it on tuesday, and see what the process is.
Phone still under warranty so i doubt ill have any worries getting it repaired.
Bought a jig this morning for $8.00.
Knew it wouldnt get my phone goin after reading that if the secondary boot loader was not intact that it wouldnt work. As id flashed the sbl.bin i knew it was toasted, but for 8.00, having a jig handy is worth every cent anyhow.
Have my Galaxy Tab to use as a phone untill the "S" is repaired, so thats a bonus.
Although im without a phone for possibly 2 weeks or so, i dont regret flashing it.
Its a good learning curve, and one ill remember.
At least i know now, that even though heimdal has slots for the bootloaders, DONT USE THEM
Its all good, and im not discouraged in any way from flashing it again as soon as its repaired lol.
All in all its been a good lesson learned.
Ive learned about the download jig, which of was unaware of earlier.
Thanks to all those who replied with info....i do appreciate it.
Will post back results of the phone return....when i know more.
Cheers
Thats the spirirt dude. I was in the same situation as yours. Got my motherboard replaced under warranty period, they took 2 weeks but were quite helpful. I said kies update bricked my phone. They replaced it for me. All happened within 2 weeks of the phone purchase. so it was bit tenseful situation. I own I9003.
Got my Galaxy back yesterday.
Turns out the main board was fried.

Its the stock DTJP3 firmware.....but not for long LOL
Think ill leave heimdalls boot options blank from now on...better still, ill use Odin instead.

hey..i have the same problem..going to svc tmmr...how long did it take?

[Q] In a LOT of trouble!

So a few days back i flashed the serendipity VII rom on to my previouly 2.2 Cappy, and it worked like a charm... a day later i was experimenting with a few ROMS all 2.3, and they worked, and to my luck I flashed a 2.2 ROM (Cognition 4) (by mistake i might add) and there it was a complete black screen brick!
since then Iv tried various methods to bring it back to life, the 3button thing, the taking the battery out holding down the 3 buttons connecting the usb and putting the battery back in, then releasing power only... Iv tried to even get it JTAGed, which was a disaster since the JTAG guy tried and cudnt get the thing to show connectivity... ANY HELP??
I fail to accept that this is the end... Please HELPP!!!!!
just keep trying to get into dl mode by using other usb ports, a jig, holding buttons while battery removed and install battery then plug in phone, happened to me plenty of times but was persistant that it finally got into dl mode.
Try making a jig and putting phone in download mode then flash stock through odin -- do a search for jig in the captivate forums. It saved me many times. You can even make one for about $1.
If you had gingerbread then you may need to use the i9000 version of entering download mode. The key combination is different. Search around on the forum as plenty have already mentioned what it is. I just don't remember off the top of my head.
if it will not power on at all....it doesnt look good.
try holding volume down and power...see if that brings up download mode. a jig is only $8 shipped to your home and will work.
i had a similar scenario and a jig brought my cappy back to life!! ive had the same phone since september, the jig has saved me from at least 8 new phones
I have seen a black screen for download mode. The only way I knew I was in download was when I saw the yellow band appear in Odin. Open Odin, and try different button combinations that will get you into download mode until you see Odin recognize your phone.
I'm sure you've tried, but these are 2 other key combos. I've had that happen to me in the past and it can be frustrating.
1. volume up + volume down
2. volume down + power
3. volume down + home (softkey) then power (this is the one that worked for me)
4. volume down + menu (softkey) then power
Hope everything works out for you. If all else fails, I'm sure a jig will work.
I learned this in the days of old, when we were flashing the baked Froyo's. Don't know if it applies or if you've tried it already, but what used to work for me was:
Open Odin
Pull the battery out, put it back in...don't turn it on.
Hold the volume down button
Plug in the usb
At no point in the process should you ever touch the power button. For your Odin version, I'd recommend using the Stock Odin, get factory and then try flashing your custom Rom again.
(Edit: I say volume down because that's the current button to enter download mode with Gingerbread. It used to be Volume Up and Down at the same time.)
ok first this does not belong in the dev section! belongs in Q&A so thing will get closed pretty soon. also other than a correct jtag u cant recover with jig, button combo or voodoo magic. u just mixed a i9000 GB bootloader along with a captivate froyo secondary boot which the Cog4 ROM has. use search and i think you can find someone who offers a jtag service
Well, I've seen a few mention it, but I think your going to need to make or puchase a jig. Hit radioshack and get 3 100kohm resistors, about $1. The directions are all over the forums here. I'd be willing to bet that will fix you up.
Also, once in a while it may still be alive even though the screen is black. Like someone else said, go ahead and start Odin, then plug your phone into USB. See if there is any response from Odin. It's worth a shot.
Either way, it's good to have a Jig handy.

How did someone with just 2 posts make a thread in here? I thought you had to have 10+ posts just to post in a thread.
just contact samsung the captivate should be in warraty untill oct2011.. i also bricked my phone while on serendipity VII see Q&A Soft brick or hard Brick.i had my phone stuck on the battery charge screen. was not able to get to download mode or recovery and my battery wouldnt charge . so i called samsung just gave them my imei number and they said it was under warranty until oct 2011. i did not tell them i bricked it while flashing roms. i just told them my phone wont charge or turn on. i sent my phone to the samsung repair center in dallas tx. my phone was fix at no charge even though i had it rooted and running a custom rom. samsung just fixed my looping battery screen and put there stock froyo erasing all my apps and data.it took about 2 weeks to get all this done. got my phone back this monday and everything is working great....
so just contact samsung and say the phone wont turn on dont say you rooted it or flashed a room. samsung wont check to see if its rooted all they care about is that you didnt drop the phone or something like that.

Cappy power button fail

so yesterday my power button decided to freak out and stop working. I had been using the phone just fine ten minutes prior. I thought I felt it vibrate in my pocket so I took it out to see and there was a notification that Amazon app store had an update. I allowed the update and saw the power menu pop up as I was putting it back in my pocket. I hit the back button and put it in my pocket without looking to make sure the power menu closed. Bout 20 minutes later I check my phone and the power button won't turn the screen on. I pull the battery and when I put it back in the phone boots automatically. I tried booting into recovery from ROM manager and it just applied update.zip (I think, cuz that's the first option on the menu iirc) and proceded to reboot. The button itself seems to work fine. It isn't stuck in and it pushes in and out like normal. I tried cleaning around it with an alcohol wipe with no results.
The phone thinks the button is pushed in but why doesn't the power menu just keep spamming? I am running miui and it had an option to use the volume rocker to turn the screen on so that's what i'm doing for now.
Is there a way to use recovery so I can see if this is a software issue? To me it seems like if it was hardware the power menu would keep poppong up, but i'm no expert.
Thanks for any advice.
EDIT: another update for Amazon app store. I applied the update and the power button worked a few times to turn the screen on and off and even a couple times to bring up the power menu. I rebooted thinking my problem was solved but nope. It does work sporadically tho. I tried uninstalling Amazon app store completely when this first happened but it didn't help anything. Might be totally unrelated and purely coincidence.

Yeah that would be ideal. Warranty expired bout a week before this happened. isn't that how it's supposed to work?

Just had the same problem start up a few days ago. However, I bought my phone from BestBuy and pay $10 a month for the BlackTie Protection. I brought it in, said somethings wrong with the phone (he didn't even look at it) they gave me a loaner CrackBerry, and new phone will be waiting for me on Monday. Already have my ROM files waiting on my desktop...

update:
i figured that if it was a software problem that i could flash back to stock and my power button would be back. well, i odin 1clicked back to stock and it still dont work. now i need to flash back to miui so i can use the volume rocker to wake the phone up but i cant get into download mode. these methods ( http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode ) dont seem to work. number 3 got me into download mode to flash stock and now it just boots normally. number 4 brings me to android recovery 2e. any tips besides making a jig?
