The answer to your question is: NO. Go ahead and flash a custom GSM ROM, no need to go to stock first.
Put your phone in the bootloader
Connect it via USB to your computer
Download a GSM ROM of your choice
Flash it like normal (with your phone in the bootloader)
Enjoy!
If something goes wrong, we're here to help!

Just ignore that it is not connected through ActiveSync. When you're connected through the bootloader and it says "USB", everything is GOOD and you can flash!

You don't need a full ActiveSync connection to flash a ROM. As ace said, all you need is that "USB" to appear on the bottom of the bootloader screen
thx it worked
Nice reference about flashing wrong ROM, just flash correct ROM, then all goes alright
I'm wondering had You flash hardspl before facing this problem?

I'm trying to fix my friend's MDA right now. The problem is, it's stuck on T-Mo splash screen. It can however go to tri-color screen. Can I save this MDA or should I bury it?
Any help would be appreciated
Hi!
At the tri-color screen you should be able to flash it with a new ROM. Just try it, that worked for me after a failed flash.
Cheers

I just had the same problem myself, talk about ****ting my pants.
I have a Dutch rom in my Vario and I cid unlocked it and tried installing
a US rom but the phone was dead after it.
In the tri-color screen I tried to load the new 2.26 US rom and then the latest UK rom but both failed with invalid Vendor id or something like that.
So I downloaded the NL rom from here and thnk god it loaded without a problem and the Vario is working again.
Sadly in Dutch but at least it works again, can anyone from Holland help me upgrade to the latest US rom ?.

Encountered some problem..
It would not connect to ActiveSync from tri-color screen. There is a 'USB' at the bottom screen when I plug in the USB cable, but I don't think the PC recognizes the device.
And the thing is my friend has never CID unlock the thing
He said he just took it overseas and never turned it off, when he got back here the phone went like this.
More help please

PC doesn't need to recgonize the device via activesync to flash the Rom.
Try and find your original rom.
Put the phone in the bootloader (canaryscreen aka tri-colored screen).
plug-in your usb plug.
And start the rom update utility.
Regardless of your activesync status it should start updating your mda.
This takes about 10 minutes, and will pause at some stage, don't be alarmed and don't pull the plug !!!
Good luck

Can I update using the latest ROM (2.26)? Why does it have to be original rom?

It's recomended to go back to the original rom, so you can go back to the point before the problems began..

In canary-screen mode the phone will have an active usb connection, ActiveSync won't detect it however, because the ActiveSync software on the phone is only started when windows-mobile is running (which doesn't occur in boot-loader).
The Rom Upgrade Utility, should be able to detect the phone.
But always make shure the battery has been charged (at least half-charged).
Several people on this forum have revived their semi-bricked phone this way.
Thanks

So guys i have a big problem:
I wanted to flash to the Touch WM6 ROM but at 44% the setups stucks now when i start my pda I only see the bootloader and nothing else.
I also tried to use RUU to update to another rom but i cant because I cant connect to ActiveSync or something else.
But the PC still is noticing that an usb device is plugged in and in the top left corner the bootloader displays "usb".
So what can i do now?
Thanks
RUU can connect to a Wizard in bootloader mode, try to disable USB connection is ActiveSync and try again.
Hope you have downgraded IPL and unlocked CID at first. If not, look at the unlock sticky in the forum first.
When you say TOUCH I assume you mean the Wizard reTOUCHED and not the actual HTC TOUCH rom correct?

yes the reTOUCHed rom
//EDIT
OK i disabled the ubs connection in activesync and it worked!
Thank for your help.
But now another question:
Why didn the reTOUCHed rom didnt work for me? First time i flashed WM5 started up and i had still my vodafone branding and no touchflo.
Second time the setup got stuck at 40%
What happened?
That means your device is not CID unlocked.
I have flashed this rom to my phone and I would definitly keep it but the the internet doesnt work on it...noooowww when I go to connect my phone via USB, I get no connection to my computer to flash another rom...but atleast Ill have a phone thats on cause it still charges lmao...Any ideas on why my phone isnt being recognized?
ginolin doesn't have the network settings in this ROM. It was an oversight that he corrected with his updated one. Anyway here is the cab you need to install. Run the network wizard and select your country and provider.

Do you have active sync running in your phone? Maybe this rom does not include this service?

If you already hardspl ur device before all u need to do is go to bootloader mode connect to computer u might have to uncheck usb connection in mobile device center and reflash an official rom or another rom
It'sd now working !!!
the problem was just to unclick the usb option in active sync.
thanks dutty and thanks robertus3d.
btw dutty inscription to your website is not working. There is a message says that cookie a deactivated which is not the case.

I tried flashing the Hard-SPL so I could flash the Evo 6 ROM but no matter what I do, manual flash auto flash different USB ports different cables different cab files nothing works. I have a stock ATT ROM on my Tilt 2. I was able to flash my Tilt 1 to 6.5 but for some reason every time I try to flash this one it just hangs and I have reset the phone.
Any advice? I'm kinda stuck here. anyway to flash off the phone without having to go through the PC and USB cable? As of now the phones stock with no mods.
Need more info
Are you getting stuck flashing Hard SPL or the when flashing the ROM?
You should probably try posting on either the Hard SPL thread or the "Flashing your first ROM" thread, depending on the answer. They will be more specific to your issue.

Basically what happens is at the progress screen it never passes 0% and it acts as if its not connected to active sync. Even though it is, I initially tried to flash the ROM first but then tired the Hard-SPL and got the same results.
You should definitely post this in the Hard SPL thread by Olinex. You'll find great help there.
Good luck.

don't know if you fixed this yet but I would check to make sure that you unzipped the files, both the hspl and the rom files before attempting to run them.

Install this to your device and softreset...then try to run the hardspl again...
I just went through the very same thing. The CAB jhernand1102 posted above fixed my HardSPL problem. Using the latest HardSPL app (v2.00R3), it would fail to detect that my Tilt 2 was connected when selecting the Automatic process. On the final window of the HardSPL app, it gives a URL where to download the CAB file. I installed it on my phone, then was finally able to run the HardSPL app in Automatic mode.
What version of windows are you running? Have you tried downloading mobility center 6.1 and the matching drivers? I had this problem as well. Once I downloaded the update for windows mobility center I have had no problems at all.
You need to post your questions(s) in the HardSPL thread
