I'm currently traveling outside the us and my phone is always connecting to Fastlink (which is now Zain). My phone wont pick up Zain and I'm having problems with data, it connect once to another works no problem then switch back to Fastlink. I was wondering if there was to enable the network operators to manually change it. or can change the data type? I'm in Jordan.
thx for the help
I am lookikng a way too - neither time, i can't even search for operators...

I'm going to Germany for a month and do not want to accrue any voice/data charges while I'm there. I plan to use wifi only. What's the best way to disable voice/data, but still use wifi? I also want to make sure that my apps do not try to establish a data connection outside of wifi. One idea I have is to keep the phone in "airplane" mode. But I'm concerned that if I reboot my phone it will kick itself out of airplane mode and start roaming.
Any suggestions?
change the APN settings to point to a non-exsistant server, cell interent wont work but wifi can be on and you can still make/receive calls and SMS if need be
I just got back from Europe, this worked wonders for me.
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Wireless and Network Settings
3. Go to Mobile Networks
4. Uncheck the Data Roaming Option.
This will prevent your phone from using data while you are roaming.
@dcplaya I am also running on Cin Bell. Works great!
Or get a German SIM, that way you'll have data. If anybody calls you on your US number let them leave a voice mail on Google voice

I have a Nexus One in the UK and have so far taken it to the US, Switzerland, France, NZ and HK. The above definitely works and should be all you need to do. I just had a look at my online balance and can confirm the total on my data charges is £0.00. Note that you can leave this setting disabled the whole time, even when you're in your own country. The phone distinguishes between roaming and non-roaming and acts accordingly.

4. my apn settings are correct (i have another sgs configured same way on same network)
5. decided to upgrade to 2.2 (JPH) hoped this would help - NO

Here's what's there, can you see what is wrong ?
Try this, worked for me
This is a weird coincidence. I have (had!) the exact same problem.
My problem was when I reflashed my galaxy S with stock firmware back again, I lost 3g connection. Using a different sim (which supports only Edge) I was able to get edge connection but with my sim, there was no connection.
Here's what I did. It seems when you select the band selection to "Automatic" it somehow didnt get registered properly even though it showed up on the settings->Wireless and network->Mobile networks->NetworkMode. Even though it read GSM/WCDMA (auto mode) it wasnt actually the case.
So - type *#2263# on your phone to enter the Service Mode's Band Selection.
There see if first row is [1] AUTOMATIC[] OR [1] AUTOMATIC[*]
In my case it wasnt selected ie. there was no *. So I clicked on it and did that selection myself and baam!! H connection. It connected even before I exited from service mode.
I tried a 2g and 3g card after that multiple times and it connects properly to E or H from then on.
Give it a try. I am hoping that your APN is set properly.
Anup
Thanks for the help, but unfortunately this didn't work :-(
1. Automatic was selected.
2. Ive tried to play around with the options there and within the mobile networks.
Nothing works ... this is so frustrating :-(

Why didn't you just call Vodafone and get their help before flashing the phone If you already have another SGS configured same way at the same location with 3G, then chances are there is a hardware problem with the phone.
Anyways, try contacting vodafone, they might still do something about it (despite the fact you have voided their warranty by flashing).

The problem is that I'm not from Czech Republic. The phone was purchased there by a friend of mine and brought to me...
hi everyone ,i'm a new user .
as title i make this question.i often connect to internet by 3g connection.i went to setting/mobile network then i set data connection: on,3g connection: on and my country APN.My Hd7 work well ,but only "use 3g connection when availale". it almost switch to 2g network
Anybody have ideas to solve it ?it really really necessary for me
Sorry for my bad English, hope you understand my problem
Go to the dialer. Type ##3282#. Go to settings, under 'Network Type', choose 3G only. If it's already on 3G only (I think it moves back and forth between 2G only and 3G only while on Automatic mode), change it to 2G only, then back to 3G only. This will keep it on 3G only.
thank you very much.i solved it
hello friends I have a t-mobile hd7 but I'm from Colombia, they know how I can make it work on 3G network here in Colombia because it only works on 2g
Hi
I am in Kolkata India and recently switched from a 2G to a 3G plan with Vodafone Kolkata. Ever since then, my problem is that I am unable to connect to 3G using WCDMA. Neither voice nor data works. If I revert to GSM only, then voice and 2G works fine. Wifi has been fine and my saviour at home.
Phone details: Sony Xperia SP C5302 running Android 4.3 build 12.1.A.1.205.
I have confirmed with network service that it is not a SIM card issue, by carrying out the foll. tests already
1- Signal strength in the area of use : At the time when I am unable to connect to 3G, my colleague sitting in the next desk and using a Motorola phone is consistently able to connect to the same 3G network from his phone. So the network strength must be fine.
2- SIM damaged or dirty - I have obtained a new SIM card as replacement, after this problem started, from my service provider yesterday. But the problem is not resolved.
3- Manual network search and connection - I have tried this many times, using WCDMA only or WCDMA(Preferred) options. In either case, only on rare occasions, the phone was able to connect to a network. However, 3G data connection (H+ icon) did not show and then the phone disconnects from network. On most occasions, when I manually attempt to connect to the 3G network, I get the message "Could not register to the selected network. Make sure SIM is inserted."
3- Trying different SIM/Handset - I have tried out both options of switching SIM and handset.
- My SIM on Motorola handset - connects to H+
- Another SIM on my Sony - momentarily connects, then disconnects and then does not connect to network.
Please let me know if anyone has faced similar issues and found any resolution. Thank you in advance.

I think that there's an option to use 2G instead of 3G in the settings menu, have you checked to see if that is enabled?

That is the WCDMA option I've mentioned about, there was no other setting for this.
Anyways, it turned out to be a hardware problem. Got the "mother-board" replaced for free as it was under warranty & now working fine!

Good to see that you've sorted out the problem!
When I am in Mexico (close to the US), the phone insists to stay on the T-Mobile signal (even though the signal is so weak that I cannot place a call, send sms or use the internet), so I have to manually search available networks and manually select the network I need several times per day. When the phone DOES switch to the Mexican carrier, it switches to Movistar which offers really bad internet service. Two questions:
1.- Is there a way to modify the radio so that I do not have to search for networks every time I need to switch networks? (Like the iphone. The iphone keeps the available networks search results on the Settings >> Carrier tab)
2.- Instead of the radio defaulting to Movistar when it goes into roaming, is there a way to modify it so that it defaults to Telcel? (Telcel is another carrier in Mexico).
Thank you for your reply

I would use APN settings. You should be able to manually select the one you want once you get them setup.
